Holden to build two new cars in SAHOLDEN Australia will manufacture two new cars at its Elizabeth, South Australia plant in the second half of this decade, after receiving $275 million from the government.

The investment package comes from the Australian, South Australian and Victorian governments, who claim they have ‘secured’ car manufacturing in Australia – at least until 2020.

The venture will reportedly drive more than $1 billion of investment for the local automotive manufacturing industry.

“The investment will help Australia retain its capability to design, engineer and build cars with two all-new vehicles going into production at Elizabeth, South Australia, in the second half of this decade,” said Holden chairman and managing director, Mike Devereux.

“The two new Australian-made cars will be world-class. They will be underpinned by global architectures from within General Motors and bring new fuel-saving, connectivity and safety technologies to Holden’s portfolio.”

According to Devereux, the investment plan is a positive move not only for the car industry, but for other related industries such as the

supply chain, research and development and retail sectors.

“We estimate the current locally-built Cruze will generate more than a billion dollars of economic activity from Holden in Australia over the life of the program,” he said.

The investment comes as good news for the industry following Holden’s announcement in February that it would shed 150 contract workers, allowing it to assemble cars in less time.

For more information, visit www.holden.com.au/holden-innovation

The venture hopes to drive over $1b of investment for local car manufacturing.

CSIRO has entered into a five-year, $25 million strategic research program with Boeing, to drive innovation in space sciences, advanced materials, energy and direct manufacturing.

According to Innovation Minister Chris Evans, CSIRO will be able to transfer its science from the laboratory into industry through the research program.

CSIRO and Boeing are no strangers to each other. They have been involved in a 23-year partnership, jointly investing about $110 million across a wide range of projects, including sustainable aviation fuels, aircraft assembly processes and fire retardants.

With the new research program, emerging technologies may allow manufacturers in developed countries like Australia to compete with countries where labour costs are low.

Govt to reform VET systemTHE Government has announced a skills reform plan that it claims will ensure Australia’s national vocational education and training (VET) system is better equipped to deliver skills to workers in a “rapidly changing economy”.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the reform would ensure Australia has the skills base necessary to drive growth in a high participation, more productive economy.

The Government has prepared a document setting out its reform plan, which it says will deliver greater access to affordable training.

“Skills are central to ensuring we have the workforce needed to deliver the innovative, high quality, high value products and services that will power our economy into the 21st Century,” said the report’s authors.

The government has committed $1.75 billion over five years to

achieve key reforms, which will be negotiated with the states and territories through the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

This is in addition to a National Agreement, which will see the government provide $7.2 billion in skills funding to states and territories over the next five years.

Warehouse Solutions

Installing state-of-the-art products from SSI Schaefer™, the world’s largest logistics system supplier, Crown combines materials handling expertise for a totally integrated approach.

Crown Warehouse Solutions can help turn your warehouse problem into an economic success. Contact the team at your nearest Crown branch to find out more.

1 Narrow AisleNarrow aisles offer several benefits by providing

better storage utilisation. Less space is required

for lift trucks to operate, while productivity and

organisational efficiencies also improve. Back-to-back

racking allows product to be stored two-deep.

2 Order PickingOrder picking is the process of fulfilling customer orders.

The product size, weight and storage method will determine the

appropriate lift truck.

3 Bulk StorageBulk storage areas allow for storage of large quantities of a similar product.

Lift trucks used are typically no wider than the product being stored.

4 Rack StorageRack storage considerations determine effective vertical storage and

product selectivity. The type of lift truck chosen for load handling will

require specific aisle width and rack layout parameters.

Crown's worldwide experience in lift trucks and fixed storage solutions brings a totally new and innovative approach to the Australian logistics industry.

Warehouse Solutions

There is nothing like a Crown, for picking it up and putting it down.

5 Very Narrow AisleMaximum storage density is achieved by minimising lift truck aisle

requirements. Very narrow aisle lift trucks are designed specifically for this

environment. These lift trucks maintain their position in the aisle through wire

or rail guidance.

6 ShelvingFull space utilisation of your warehouse also means effective use of steel

and wire shelving. Small parts and similar sized materials can be stored

efficiently on shelving. When combined with the Crown Wave® Work Assist

Vehicle it provides an economical picking situation for your facility.

7 Dock WorkAny application that requires loading and unloading products

from a delivery vehicle and staging them for further handling

is considered dock work. The particular recommended dock

truck will depend on your specific demands and the

characteristics of your shipping and

receiving areas.

8 TransportTransport is the process of moving product

from one point to another. Distance travelled,

manoeuvrability requirements and the need for

multi-tasking play a critical role in determining

product selection.

9 Work AssistCrown recognises that the range of our products can fulfil a variety of uses

across a wide range of applications. Examples include: die handling, performing

maintenance tasks, or serving as a portable work positioner.

Short stroke and flat cylindersHOLMATRO has introduced a new series of short stroke cylinders and flat cylinders with spring return. The cylinders are geared towards hydraulic solutions for heavy, industrial applications.

Both types of cylinders are based on the Duo Power Ring concept – a combination of a superior seal and a highly durable composite bearing.

The composite bearings prevent metal to metal contact and also provide resistance against side load to a maximum of 10%. The cylinders are intended for use where construction height is restricted and other cylinders cannot fit.

Both the short stroke and the flat cylinders are fitted with a spring that pulls the plunger back after use. They also have a spring

that can be disassembled quickly and safely. With average use, the company recommends servicing the cylinders once a year.

Holmatro [email protected]

The cylinders can be used in a range of heavy, industrial applications and comply with the ASME B-30.1 standard.

Industrial casters without kingpins CASTER Concepts has released a new line of casters, the 55 and 57 series. The casters are free of kingpins and can handle loads up to 144kg (1,200lbs) by distributing downward pressure over a larger area.

Derived from a traditional caster using a bearing race held together by a kingpin, the company’s kingpinless swivel bearing holds the yoke and plate together without chatter at all speeds, while using 25% less force.

The casters feature sealed bearings with hardened raceways and neoprene seals. Suitable for production racks and fixtures, part bins, conveyor systems, the casters

are available in a range of wheel diameters: 4” (10.2cm), 6”(15.2cm), 8” (20.3cm) and 10” (25.4cm).

Quad-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) frame grabber ADLINK Technology a has released a quad-port GigE Vision frame grabber, the GIE64+, featuring PoE (Power over Ethernet), IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol and smart PoE application programming interface.

The quad-port frame grabber supports PCI Express x4 lane, 4 independent Gigabit Ethernet ports with data transfer rates up to 1 Gb/s, and GigE Vision camera compliance.

The company says the multi-channel synchronisation, PoE interface, IEEE 1588 PTP technology and Smart PoE support, allow the frame grabber to cut cabling requirements by as much as 60%. The unit is suited to manufacturing environments utilising multi-camera acquisition.

The frame grabber supports IEEE 1588, providing a software trigger mode for multi-camera synchronized captures. The unit

needs only a lone Ethernet cable for power supply, data transfer, and synchronisation. In a typical 4-channel image system, as an example, with the frame grabber, only four cables are required rather than the conventional twelve, representing a reduction in the total cost of ownership.

In addition, the frame grabber further supports a smart PoE application programming interface, enabling easy power status programming and auto detection of compatibility with both PoE and non-PoE devices.

Anti-fatigue industrial mat MAT World, the matting division of Pall Mall Manufacturing Co, will launch an anti-fatigue mat at NMW 2012, on stand 6700.

With a series of miniature, tennis-ball like, moulded rubber cups forming the surface, the

mat is designed to respond to even the minutest body movement such as slight swaying, which is normal when standing.

This, in turn, causes small foot and lower leg movements to counterbalance these body movements and the foot and leg movements cause blood to be pumped up from feet back towards the heart. According to the company, this prevents blood “pooling” and minimises the risk of fatigue.

The mat is designed to support workers who are constantly on their feet.

Industry’s ‘big issues’ the focus of NMW A STAND-OUT event at this year’s National Manufacturers’ Week, the one-day NMW Conference on Wednesday, May 9 will focus on the industry’s ‘big issues’: boosting productivity, sustainability and innovation.

This year’s NMW, to be co-located with Austech, will be held on 8-11 May at Sydney Showground, Olympic Park. Themed ‘Essential Strategies, Tools and Methodologies for Australian Manufacturers’, the NMW conference will provide a closed-door forum for delegates to hear from industry experts and discuss the key topics. Among the topics to be addressed are: dealing with the challenges of manufacturing in a high cost environment; overcoming the skills shortage; boosting innovation and addressing

sustainability issues. Speakers are drawn from businesses that

have overcome business-critical challenges - such as Bluescope Steel, Siemens and Boeing - along with government and industry experts who bring actual case studies and strategies that are boosting the bottom-line results of manufacturing businesses.

Structured around presentations, discussion and panel sessions to encourage discussion and deeper insights, the one-day conference aims to provide new ideas and strategies that participants can implement straight away in their business.

In addition to the NMW 2012 Conference, NMW will also host an extensive program of partner events – such as industry-specific

sessions and training workshops – as well as a rolling program of NMW exhibitor innovation.

National Manufacturing Week (NMW)8-11th May - Sydney Showground, Olympic Parkwww.nationalmanufacturingweek.com.au

Simulation modelling software for manufacturersTMN Simulation will launch the latest Flexsim 3D Simulation Modelling Software, designed to help manufacturers analyse, visualise, and optimise any process – from manufacturing to supply chain.

Simulation models are working, 3D replications of a company’s operations. Users can change any aspect of technology, process or resources and track improvements – all with statistically accurate reports.

The blend of 3D visualisation and statistical proof can be used in sales bids or business cases, helping non-tech

stakeholders visualise and understand the issues. The company claims the major benefit of simulation is that it dramatically reduces the effort required to improve processes and find efficiency gains – letting manufacturers get back to their core business.

The simulation modelling software will be on display at stand 6106.

Gas cylinders: 750L capacityCAC Gas & Instrumentation has introduced 5L cylinders with a gas capacity of 750L that are designed as a first step when moving up in cylinder sizes from disposable cylinders.

Customers currently consuming multiple 58L cylinders per year should consider the 750L high pressure solution. In addition to eliminating the purchase of almost thirteen 58L cylinders each year, the 750L cylinder reduces the cost of calibration gas, improves efficiency, reduces the frequency and cost of purchasing cylinders and eliminates 13 cylinders going to landfill.

Further, for mixtures such as H2S/CO/CH4/O2, the 750L cylinder has a two year shelf life. So, customers using as few as six 58L cylinders in a year will have a minimum 25% cost savings by using the larger cylinder.

The 750L cylinder is 50cm high, 15cm in diameter and weighs 8kg, making it easy to move and relocate.

Solenoid valves, manifold solutions and accessoriesROTORK Australia manufactures a range of direct mount solenoid valves, manifold solutions and accessories for general valve actuator applications in 3/2, 5/2 or 5/3 port arrangements.

The compact design of these solenoid valves features a NAMUR

mounting pattern according to VDI/VDE 3845 designed to mount to any NAMUR valve actuator, thus reducing actuator response times, space requirements and also negating the need for a back plate. The need for tubing, fittings, brackets and assembly labour is also greatly

reduced when using these valves, with all necessary mounting screws and seals included with the unit.

What differentiates the Bifold design of these valves from other valves on the market is the unique patented mounting/spacer block which is free to rotate through 360°.

This feature prevents the solenoid housing from coming into contact with the switch box and ensures the filter regulator remains upright at all times.

HYDAC has released a new series of automatic back-flushing filters, the Autoflit RF5 and compact RF7.

The RF5 has a similar function to the existing RF3, in that the fluid to be filtered flows through the slotted tube filter elements of the back-flushing filter, passing from the inside to the outside.

Contamination particles then get collected on the smooth interior of the filter elements. As the level of contamination increases, the differential pressure between the contaminated and clean sides of the filter increases. When the differential pressure reaches its pre-set value, back-flushing starts automatically.

The Autoflit RF5 differs from the RF3, as the filtration rate is greater than 200µm. The RF5 has a straight filter inlet, a welded-in element plate, new

plate sectioning and new element dimensions . It is also capable of handling higher loading on the filtration area.

Another new model, the RF7, supplements the company’s back-flushing filter family with an user-optimised, compact model range, specifically designed for applications with small space and height restrictions.

The filter has a small installation height, and can be installed inline, which means less piping work. It has a standard cover swinging device, and all components are easily accessible.

Specially designed element support allows for easy assembly and disassembly of the filter elements.

Modular extruded aluminium piping and fittings on showTESEO presented its range of aluminum piping and fittings at Air-Tech 2012, a showcase of technology in the compressed air industry. This year’s exhibition was held in Birmingham, England from 17 to 19 April.

The company’s piping products are specifically designed for the construction of distribution plants for compressed air, vacuum, nitrogen and other fluids under pressure.

On show was the company’s modular extruded aluminium piping. The aluminium Hollow Bar System (HBS) was designed to enhance pressure balance and reduce pressure reduction.

The modular design with multi-component inventory means that the system can be quickly and economically installed. A unique feature is the ability to “hot-tap” the installed system to add new drops or connectors without shutting down the whole system.

The use of smooth bore, low interference connections allows eve a small energy source to maintain high pressure at the

furthest point of the network. This is the favoured

installation process for many industries from food production to motor racing teams, from low-cost airline maintenance hangars to steel window makers.

The aluminium airline system is a complete entity, comprising pipework of varied sizes, as well as all types of connectors and couplings. A comprehensive mountings system is included.

DEMATIC has introduced a new integrated robotic layer picking solution, which aims to reduce the risk of repetitive manual handling and to improve pallet build efficiency.

The company claims the layer picking solution enables systems to operate at efficiency rates of up to 150% and, in some cases, eliminate as much as 80% of manual handling. The layer picking system is able to achieve high throughput rates due to its FreePick Maximiser software, which cross-matches orders and pairs those with compatible order profiles.

The company’s PickDirector warehouse control system initiates picking and orders the stock required for layer picking in the sequence required to fulfil the next wave of orders. Pallets of stock are automatically conveyed to the layer picking robot where they go direct to one of several pick and put locations, which enable several orders to be picked concurrently.

The 4-axis layer picking robot is equipped with a Qubiqa vacuum head for better handling reliability. When the robot is directed to pick up a layer, the bellows inflate and close around the product creating a seal.

The vacuum gripper head offers the maximum versatility in product handling, making it suitable for picking layers from any pallet stacking pattern as well as picking a range of products, from cartons and cases to bags, sacks, cans and bottles.

UNISON has developed an all-electric twin-head tube and a solid bar bending machine.

This bending technology is suitable for manufacturers who produce tubular parts that have a high degree of symmetry, as the machine can form two bends simultaneously, thus increasing productivity. Applications include: production of parts for supermarket trolleys, wheelbarrows, furniture and automotive components such as seat sub-frames and head rests.

Twin-head bending machines are only

produced by a handful of manufacturers, and most are large hydraulically-powered systems.

The company’s twin-head bending machines are based on a different design approach in that they feature ‘all-electric’ architecture, with all motion axes controlled by servomotors. The standard machine configuration comprises two separate bending heads supported on independent ball-screw driven linear carriages.

A fifth axis controls a compact and fast actuating tube ‘centre grip and rotate’ unit, which

can be mounted in a fixed position between the two heads, or removed from the machine.

Connector modules for roboticsTREOTHAM has introduced a new electrical connector, the MIXO insert, which allows the use of contacts for fibre optic and contacts for coaxial cables.

According to the manufacturers, solutions with optical fibres are useful to protect against electromagnetic interference and for the realisation of galvanic separations on BUS applications of PROFINET/Ethernet fields. Fibre optic connectors are many industrial applications, particularly, modern railway vehicles, converters, wind energy, naval equipment and robots.

The new connectors can be used in applications from -40 °C up to +85°C even in case of frequent temperature variability. The inserts can be mounted in CX TF/TM frames and in the relative enclosures

for industrial applications to achieve IP65/66/68/69K degree of protection. The realisation of mixed connectors electrical/optical is also possible.

Laser engraving, micromachiningALFEX CNC Australia will demonstrate the accuracy of 3D engraving and micromachining processes using the latest laser technology from ACSYS Lasertechnik at this year’s Austech exhibition in Sydney.

On show will be an ACSYS Piranha fibre laser system that removes material by ablation, creating virtually any surface texture that can be digitalised. The high level of precisely charged laser energy makes it possible to engrave previously hardened materials while providing a working beam diameter down to 20μm.

Since there is no physical contact between the laser and the workpiece, the advantages include: no tool wear and no tool changes.

The process can be used to engrave, mark, label or render a microstructure on a surface in 3D with high-speed and accuracy.

Welding software

KEMPPI has launched a range of software-based welding products for use with its FastMig and KempArc welding machines.

Titled ‘the Wise Solutions’, the welding software allows the welding process to be tailored to the work at hand. The software customises the welding equipment, which the company claims helps the user achieve a level of quality that otherwise would be unattainable with the standard Mig/Mag welding process.

The tailored welding processes and functions are used for root pass work, sheet metal welding penetration control and focused arcs, where energy density is concentrated into a narrow area.

Developed over several years, the software enables control of the properties of the welding arc as well as the features of the machine. The software adjusts the arc’s properties to turn the equipment into a customized machine for specific welding work.

Magnetic filtration systemECLIPSE Magnetics has released the new Filtramag FM2.5 fluid filtering unit, which was developed along with Pro Cut Tooling. The company specified the magnetic filtration system to help Pro Cut achieve high quality “mirror” finish and also provide some significant operational efficiencies.

The filtration system features high intensity magnetic rods and is designed to ensure that fluids have maximum exposure to the rods on their flow-path. It is able to extract ferrous particles right down to sub-micron size to ensure that the grinding contact area is kept free from contamination for longer.

The high intensity rods ensure maximum removal even though carbide only has 20% magnetic permeability compared to mild steel.

Prior to installation of the unit, each machine had to be cleaned on

a weekly basis to remove particle build up from the grinding wheels and polishing heads. This process caused two hours of downtime.

Fitting the unit has enabled the cleaning process to take place on a far less frequent basis - monthly, during routine maintenance.

MCCROMETER has introduced the FIP MAG Electromagnetic Flow Meter for industrial process water and effluent wastewater.

The new flow meter is the successor of the company’s Multi-Mag Insertion Flow Meter. It supports applications in a wide range of industrial process plants, including electric power, chemical and oil refining.

The flow meter is packaged in a heavy-duty 316 stainless steel sensor body and its sensor is coated with a 3M fusion-bonded epoxy coating. The sensor also installs without interrupting service, de-watering lines, cutting pipe or welding flanges. Its compact insertion design fits into complex pipe configurations with limited access.

The flow meter’s multi-electrode sensor design compensates for variable flow profiles, including swirl, turbulence and low-flow conditions. Multiple electrodes placed across the entire sensor body continuously measure and report the average flow rate over the full diameter of pipe.

McCrometer’s flow instrumentation products are distributed in Australia by AMS Instrumentation and Calibration.
