Save these Dates

We are right in the middle of the summer but our thoughts are on upcoming Older Children’s Camp and the start of the new school year and Awana. Schools are starting early in August. Our plan is to start Awana on Wednesday, August 15. We are praying for all those who support this program through teaching, listening, praying and mentor-ing. This ministry could not function without you. If you feel you would like to help in some way with our Awana Club, please see me as soon as possible. I will be happy to answer any questions and see where you can help. I would also ask that you pray diligently and daily for this ministry. So many of our children come from unchurched homes and some with very difficult home situations. Your presence and prayers are vital and are extremely appreciated. Again, if you are interested in becoming a part of our Awana Clubs, please give me a call.

The family of Gladys Barnwell would like to thank everyone who has upheld the family in prayer and brought food during mom’s illness. It has been a blessing to the whole family.

Articles Feedback from D3 Thank you to everyone who supported us, either financially or in prayer, while we were at camp. You all make us attending D3 year after year possible, and for that, I am so grateful. Over the past five years this conference has been a huge blessing to me, and I have made many lasting relationships through it. Thank you again for allowing us the opportunity to continue going. Kirsten Jones So Much Fear and Anxiety by Ed Welch Here are some ways that others encountered fear and anxiety over just the last week or so. Parents of a ten-year-old whose child, for the first time, went to Sunday school without tears and panic. A four-year-old who simply will not leave a parent’s side without physical symp-toms of anxiety. The parents are wondering how they will ever get him to go to school. A man who is overwhelmed with worry about his finances. Many experience addictions that persist in order to “relieve tensions.” Some fear being lost, losing luggage, not accomplishing what they said they would. Out of a hundreds of people I have spoken to, very few deny having any anxie-ties, however, after a few follow up questions, most, rather quickly, are able to iden-tify dozens. God has spoken to the fearful and anxious and he says much, which is hopeful in itself. Here are a few themes that emerge from Scripture. Fear and anxiety express our fragility more than our sin. The world is a scary place and we are finite and weak people. Our power is limited to the Spirit’s enabling us to trust Jesus and love others. Other than our personal faith and obedience, we control very little. As such, a prominent passage on anxiety says, “fear not, little flock” (Luke 12:31). Little flock is an unequivocal reference to our frailty and weak-ness. So the fearful and anxious come to the God who is familiar with our weakness. He is our sympathetic and compassionate high priest. Expect to hear gentle encour-agement. Expect to hear the patient repetition of his greatest promise, “I am with you.” Also expect that you will have more anxieties as you get older. Our fears iden-tify those things that are important to us—things such as acceptance, finances, love,

Page 11: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 · 2018-07-13 · Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church 10050 Ferguson Avenue v Savannah, Georgia 31406 Bob Dimmitt Pastor 912-398-4363 bob@fabchurch.com

health, and the well-being of those we love. These are best understood as ordinary human desires, which the Lord takes seriously. When these are under siege, we should expect to be anxious. The reason they might increase as we age is that health becomes more brittle, we are less able to fend for ourselves in the job market, and we love more people and have concerns for their welfare. Turn to Jesus. If there is anything close to a command about fear in Scripture, it would be this. When we are afraid, and we will be, we are to turn to Jesus. This is God’s calling in our lives and it is our growing aspiration in the midst of worries: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3). We can try depending on our-selves as if we can manage and control our world, or we can try to quarantine our-selves with our worries, as if worry itself might shield us from future threats, but it won’t work. But trusting God in times of anxiety takes practice. It is a spiritual skill, and it is less automatic than we realize. With practice, we will be able to turn to Jesus more quickly and in ways that actually erode anxieties. Results will not be im-mediate. The ways of God are that we gradually grow in meaningful trust and con-fidence in him and love for him. If anxieties were immediately extinguished, we would turn to him less, which would be to our detriment. And if we don’t turn to him? Then, and only then, can we add sin to the picture. We need to confess that we want other things more than him. We confess that our desires have become what are most dear to us. Then, we turn and humbly listen to his words, and, as little children, grow in the skill of truly believing what our father says. What If I Can’t Sing? Keith & Kristyn Getty Sometimes we meet people who say, “I can’t sing”—as in, “The sound that comes out of my mouth when I try to sing is not what I was hoping for.” Perhaps this is you, and you can recall an awkward conversation as a child when you were asked to mouth the words, rather than sing them, or you were told that being a member of your school or church choir might not be the “best fit” for your gifts. But if you can speak, you can sing. God designed you to sing and gave you every-thing you need to sing as well as he wants you to. He’s far less concerned with your tunefulness than your integrity. Christian singing begins with the heart, not the lips (Eph. 5:19). He Treasures All Voices When our young daughters sing together, the older is more confident than the middle one, who is in turn more fluent than the youngest. This may change as they all get older, but the point is this—to their parents’ ears, each voice isn’t only as important as the others; each is as treasured as the others. Your heavenly Father cares whether and what you sing, but he doesn’t mind how well you sing. While we may have choirs within our churches made up of voices who have expertise and ability, the congregation of a church is the ultimate choir, and it is without auditions—everyone can and should be in it. The congregation of a church is the ultimate choir.

Cont. from p. 11

The beauty of such a congregational choir is that our voices and hearts are knit together in praise. It’s exhilarating to be part of a body of believers singing truth together. We recently met with a missionary to China who was home on furlough in America. After the singing, he said how wonderful it was to be able to sing freely with other believers again, for the part of China he lived in imposed heavy restric-tions on such a thing. “Oh, how my heart misses the singing,” he said. Make the Most of What You Have It’s worth adding, though, that the more we practice something, the better we become at it. And we seek to improve in what we truly value. To learn to walk takes time, and we first must learn to press down on our feet. To learn to speak takes time, and we must first open our mouths and make sounds. To praise God in tuneful song takes time, and we grow better at singing by singing. And once we’ve reached our peak, if it’s still some way short of the tuneful heights, a sense of humor is a useful ally. Some people do have a special gift of sing-ing absolutely every note slightly off pitch (which is, ironically, hard to do). Since we sing to encourage and praise, not to impress and earn praise, we can smile about that and sing anyway. Your voice may not be of professional standard, but it is of confessional standard. One of our band members, Zach White, recently told us of the inspiration his dad has been to him and his siblings when it comes to singing in church. Mr. White is always the most passionate singer in the congregation, despite only having three notes he can actually sing (all lower than his namesake, Barry), and none of them in tune. But it never holds him back. He has grasped what congregational singing is, and is not, about. Kristyn’s vocal coach for the last 14 years, Kim Wood Sandusky, has several dec-ades of experience in training professional singers across genres. She points out, “We are all singers. Some of us have talents that allow us to sing with beautiful tones and good pitch, while others have talents to sing with their soul. What a beautiful sound we all make as singers to our heavenly Father’s ears.” There are those of us who may have vocal constrictions that come through health struggles or have been there since birth. If you can’t speak but sing by signing with your hands or through whatever means God has given you, you bless the commu-nity of believers as we join with one heart and one voice until the day all tongues will sing to him. We’re so grateful for the work of signers who enable the whole congregation to so meaningfully engage in the lyrics we sing. Church, let us sing! An Open Letter to Those Apathetic to Their Sanctification By David Powlison

Dear friend, How can I light a fire and get you engaged and active in wanting to grow when you don’t really seem that interested? What could shake you out of apathy and in-difference? What could shake you out of plodding along through life, going through the motions in your Christianity?

Page 13: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 · 2018-07-13 · Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church 10050 Ferguson Avenue v Savannah, Georgia 31406 Bob Dimmitt Pastor 912-398-4363 bob@fabchurch.com

There’s no magic answer of course. But let me share a couple of things that I’ve found that have affected my own lethargy and apathy. First of all, I often look at myself in light of the seven deadly sins. (These are actually the seven daily sins, things that are endemic to what it means to be a human being!) The one that al-ways gets me is sloth (Latin: acedia). Sloth doesn’t just mean you’re just sitting around watching TV all day, popping bonbons. Sloth also means indifference. Feeling apathetic. Sloth says, “I don’t really care. It doesn’t matter. What’s the use? Whatever.” It’s a pretty accurate characteristic of the modern era, a mild cynicism that questions whether or not anything really matters. The thing is, everything actually does matter. It matters a whole lot. The tiniest things we do, the most careless words we say, the smallest act of kindness towards another person—all these things actually count. We live in God’s world. From God’s perspective, there’s nothing we do that’s outside his concern or gaze. Think of how Jesus chose to single out giving a glass of cold water to somebody who is thirsty, and talked about how you won’t lose your reward in heaven when you do something that small. He thought that spotting someone else and serving them in some small way really, really mattered. It’s the opposite of indifference be-cause someone else’s need matters to the point that you put yourself out. Also, let’s think about the way in which people who are apathetic also often complain and grumble. We can become negative, mildly sour, skeptical about stuff that happens. You know, in the Bible, the people of Israel were killed for grum-bling! It was a death-sentence crime to grumble, because God is truly good, and we lose sight of that when we become absorbed in our own needy desires. We forget, but God doesn’t forget. Grumbling matters before him. He is continu-ally calling for us to wake up and remember. He reminds us not to fall asleep or lose sight of what it’s all about. He says, “Don’t forget who you are, and don’t for-get who I am.” Don’t forget that everything we do and say actually matters. Every careless word or unthinking comment actually matters, and our God is committed to touch us right down to the throw-away comments, the casual bad attitudes and “whatevers” that can so degrade our lives into apathy. Human life—every choice, every thought, every word, every deed, and every attitude—really, truly matters. As you awaken to that, you awaken to the fact that you really need help. You’re able to say, “God, I really need you. I need your strength. I need your forgiveness. Give me the grace to care about things that really matter.”

S omething to consider: We are, no doubt, all familiar with the statement , “Your actions speak so loud that I can’t hear a word you are saying.” There is a LOT of truth in this statement. Yet, how often do we consider that the opposite is often

more applicable: “The way in which you speak makes it impossible to hear your words or appreciate your actions.” Our “speaking” is very often more damaging to us than we fathom. Yet, we excuse ourselves with statements such as, “I tell it like it is,” or, “I believe that I should say what I think.” In all truth, people aren’t able to hear what we are saying because they pick up on our “spirit” when we open our mouths. What’s more, they avoid conversing with us because they don’t want to be around divisive conversation any more than they want to be around divisive actions.

Missionary of the Week

Tony & Sharon Gould South Carolina

Tony and Sharon have spent their entire mar-riage in ministry. Tony pastored for years, and upon his retirement he and Sharon set off to South Africa to teach and work at a Bible School. That phase of their ministry over, from their home base in South Carolina, Tony fills a pulpit when needed and takes opportunities to speak and teach the Word whenever he is able. He teaches a Bible study every Wednesday night, with 40 to 50 attending every week. His passion for teaching is hard to match. Sharon, always the helpmeet and administra-tor, has worked to transfer all of Tony’s recorded teaching onto CD so it can be used to teach today. She is active in their church and the local Pregnancy Center. From their most recent letter this month: Praise : • For you, our supporters, who have been with us since 1990, Siabonga {In Eng-

lish) "Thank you very much" • UBI is building another house for 2 married couples to study • For our world wide family Prayer Requests: • For our health issues which are common for our age • For Tony to continue teaching one verse at a time. • Sharon is involved as the Financial officer in the Advocacy Pregnancy Center

where it ministers to clients in an unplanned pregnancy and teach Prenatal and Parenting classes.

A s difficult as it is to trust God in adversity, there are other times when it may be even more difficult to trust Him; such as when circumstances are

going well. During times of prosperity we are prone to put our trust in those blessings or in ourselves as the providers of those blessings. At these moments we show our trust by acknowledging God as the provider of those blessings. It is the Lord that provides the regular paycheck, and the full refrigerator. We should express heartfelt acknowledgment and genuine gratitude to God in our prayers of thanksgiving to the Lord.

A real church as set forth in the NT is not a support group. It’s not a social club or a counseling

center. It’s a family of redeemed sinners who have God as their Father through their union with Jesus Christ. It’s a body knit together by the Holy Spirit so that together all are built up and strength-ened and loved. Church is God’s idea.
