The Headteacher, Mr Bowden, said, “I congratulate all of our students for their superb results this year, especially those who have exceeded expectations. Every student who worked hard, attended and had a positive attitude achieved their predictions and many exceeded them. “In the most successful cases staff, students and parents engaged together with education as an aim to improve life chances and, as a result, have been extremely successful. “Our results this year continue their upward improvement and the regard with which Ferryhill students are held as they move on continues to improve. This reflects not only on the school but the communities it serves. That reflection continues to get brighter and we are delighted with this. “Difficult though it may be, we will aim to improve on our results again next year. “ The school will be holding an Open Evening for parents of primary students currently in Year 6 on Wednesday, January 30th. The event will give parents a chance to talk to staff at the school about its successes and their future part in its continuation. The Open Evening starts at 6.30pm and the school will be open from 6.00pm. Students look overjoyed as they receive their GCSE results. Ferryhill Police have gained the right to ban troublemakers from the town in a bid to curb potential disturbances. Police in both Ferryhill and Spennymoor will now be able to impose exclusion orders on people or groups, who they fear may cause trouble, for a period of either 24 or 48 hours. Inspector Bill Bentham, of Spennymoor Police, said that the system was particularly aimed at weekend drinkers. The annual trip organised by the Ferryhill Aged Peoples Treat Committee and supported by Ferryhill Town Council and Durham County Council, previously known as the ‘Aged Peoples Trip’, will now be called the ‘Senior Citizens Trip’.During this years trip to York, passengers completed questionnaires, and the results of the survey were recently reported back to a Council meeting where it was decided that next year’s trip, scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 29th, 2010, will once again visit York as requested by the majority of passengers. Members considered the views of local residents when making preparations for next year’s trip and, at the request of numerous residents, coaches will leave for York at an earlier time and will also return earlier to avoid traffic. The only other request received was that the trip take place during school term time, however, this will not be possible due to coaches being

The Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen Martin, together with Councillors Zena Roddam and Doreen Barber, held a tombola at Ferryhill Market on Friday, September 11th, to raise money for the Mayor’s charity.In just a couple of hours, £232 was raised. The money will be divided between the Mayor’s charities, which this year are The Great North Air
Ambulance and the Ferryhill 2000 Committee.“Eileen is extremely grateful for the support received on the day and would like to say a huge thank you to all those who donated prizes for the tombola, to those who bought tickets and also to Zena and Doreen for giving up their time to help organise the tombola,” commented a Council spokesperson.

Residents of Ferryhill have been surprised recently by the emergence of a new high point in the town at Dean Bank Park. Contractors currently working on the Town Council’s new million pound sports complex in Dean Bank Park have removed hundreds of tons of topsoil from the football pitches to enable new field drains to be added. This has been piled up to 60 feet high on the side of the park, creating a new high point for the town, albeit a temporary one.

Ferryhill already commands a lofty position of 756 feet above sea level and has some magnificent views of much of the North East. Places that can be seen from Ferryhill include Durham Cathedral, Penshaw Monument, Weardale, Gateshead, the wind turbines as far away as Elwick near Hartlepool, Rosebery Topping and the Cleveland Hills and even the floodlights at St James Park! Parents are asked to ensure their children do not enter
the construction site and ensure they do not vandalise the security fencing around the site, as some youths have already caused several hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the temporary fencing.Meanwhile, clearance work at the former Ferryhill Athletic football ground has progressed rapidly, and the old changing block in the park has been completely demolished, as has the old scoreboard and toilet block.
Ferryhill has a new temporary high point after contractors removed hundreds of tons of topsoil from the football pitches in Dean Bank Park.

Family and friends of sadly-missed motorcyclist, Peter Wilson, will be holding a fancy dress event at Ferryhill Station workingmen’s Club this month, in order to raise funds for the charity which tried to save his life.Peter, who lived in Lumley Crescent, Ferryhill, was tragically killed after he was thrown from his motorcycle near the West Chilton roundabout on July 19th this year.He suffered serious head and internal injuries and passed away after being taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance.The Air Ambulance is a charity which operates three helicopters in the North without government or national lottery support. It relies entirely on people raising funds so they can continue their life-saving work.Peter’s sister, Lynne Burnett, has already raised a fantastic £1060.57 and Peter’s wife, Jean, and his daughters Kaylee, 17 and Andi, 15, are currently selling party moustaches in the run up to the event.The event will be held at Ferryhill Station wMC on Saturday, September 26th,

The independent Boundary Committee for England is asking people in Durham to comment on proposals for new local electoral arrangements in the county. The review will decide how many councillors should sit on Durham’s new unitary authority in future and will also establish new boundaries for the council’s electoral divisions. The Committee’s draft recommendations include maps of the proposed new divisions that each councillor will represent. The recommendations should be available at council buildings and libraries, or online at www.boundarycommittee.org.ukThe proposals caused a stir in June of this year, when it was
put forward that the boundaries for the Chilton and Ferryhill ares would change, meaning Chilton would have only one councillor.Max Caller, Chair of the Boundary Committee, said, “Having fair electoral boundaries is important, especially given that the new unitary authority in Durham is only a few months old. They ensure that every voter in Durham, wherever they live in the county, will have a vote of the same weight when electing their councillors.“Earlier this year, we asked people and groups in Durham to tell us how many councillors the council should have and the areas that each councillor should represent. That
information forms the basis of our draft recommendations. Now we want people to tell us what they feel the impact of the recommendations will be on their community, if they think they can be improved, and what those changes should be.”The Committee wants to hear as much clear and well-argued evidence as possible in order to develop final recommendations for Durham. Following residents’ complaints regarding recent anti-social behaviour and violence, local MP, Phil Wilson, accompanied by Councillors Christine Potts, Councillor Brian Avery, Mr Andy Denholm (Durham County Council) and residents, walked around the affected streets (Albert Street, Arthur Street and Prospect Terrace) on September 10th.Following this, they then visited residents in their homes, and listened to their

Super slimmers from Ferryhill are hoping to set a world record by taking part in the world’s biggest birthday party for Slimming world’s 40th anniversary.The slimming club’s 300,000 members from across Britain are invited to bring their friends and family to birthday party events at Slimming world groups, in what is hoped will set a Guinness World Record as the world’s biggest birthday bash.Members of the Ferryhill Slimming world group are to

Crowds flocked to Bertha Street Allotments recently, when a fundraising event was held on the site.One of the allotments had been transformed, with tables covered in fresh vegetables and flowers.Tempting home-baked cakes, scones and pies also attracted lots of customers.The magnificent sum of £350 was raised for Broom Cottages Primary School.An organiser of the event commented on the day, saying,
“Bertha Street Allotment Association passes on their appreciation to everyone who donated and baked for the event, all helpers on the day and every customer who bought some produce. Thank you all for your generous support.”A special thanks was given to Harry Whitehead, who brought everyone together and organised the event. “He deserves the credit,” said Councillor Zena Roddam who helped organise the fundraiser.

A fundraising event at the Bertha Street Allotments was a huge success.
Ferryhill Town Youth Under 15’s played their first game of the season recently, against North Ormesby.From the first whistle, Ferryhill put in a first class performance, winning every ball and stopping attacks throughout.Ferryhill ended the game 6-2, with goals from Chrissy Devine (2), Conner Slater (2), John Poulson (1) and Andre Dolphin (1), with great back-up from all team members.The Under 11’s team were away to Cumby Rovers, also their first game of the season.Both teams started well with

Dear Editor,In response to Mr Moffatt’s letter in issue 436 where he questions the opening of the Pentlands Play Area, Chilton. The Mayor, Councillor Len Potts, officially opened the Pentlands play area on 22nd August for funding and contractual purposes. It was the Council’s intention for the opening to coincide with the town’s gala day but, unfortunately, the footpaths were unable to be completed. Therefore, the contractors have been required to keep the

fencing erected in the interest of safety whilst the footpaths were completed.The Council wish to assure Mr Moffatt and the residents of Chilton that the play area will be complete and open for children to use on Tuesday 22nd September.The Council have had reports of anti-social behaviour whilst the construction works of the new park have been ongoing. These reports have been filtered to both the police and Neighbourhood Wardens, who are regularly patrolling the
area. The Council would like to remind people that these facilities have cost a lot of money and wish for local residents to be vigilant with any anti-social behaviour and to inform the police and the Council (721788) of any incidents. Any information will be treated confidentially.The Council are seeking funding to install a CCTV camera within the play area and should have this confirmed by December 2009.

SHOW SUCCESS AT COLLEGE
The end of the summer term saw a phenomenally successful return to the stage for Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College’s West-end wannabes. A production of “The Rocky Monster Show” ran for 3 nights at the college and over 600 tickets were sold, raising almost £1000 for the college show fund.A cast of 30 students took part in the show, with pupils in all year groups getting involved in the all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza. It also gave several students the opportunity to get involved
in back-stage work such as lighting, stage management and props.A spokesperson for the school said, “Special thanks go out to everyone from the community who came along to support us in our first big production for 5 years. We were really nervous but the exceptional hard work and commitment of both students and staff paid off. We now have the foundation for an excellent show every year and we hope we build on the success this summer.”Plans are already under way for another summer production.
