Saturday April 16, 2011 is Record Store Day, so
Im going to talk in rather personal terms and givea shout out to Record Store Day. This national and
internationally celebrated day was invented about 5
years ago and has now become a cause clbre world
wide exploding into a huge, exciting and un f lled
grass roots cultural phenomenon. The idea is to honor
the tradition o what a local owned, independent
record store brings to a community and how that shop
is grateul to and can thank that community. Record
Stores have been closing and dying o in droves
under pressure rom big box discounters, Amazon
type e-tailing, the onslaught o the digital era and
f nally the impact o the great recession o the last
ew years. With all this and the so called death o
the CD ormat, record stores were widely believed to
near extinction, however here comes the renaissance
o the record, o the vinyl culture. It has coincided
with the discovery o recycling music i.e. buying and
selling used CDs and LPs as a new economy act
and the trend o waste not want not meets budgetconsiderations.
This new vinyl record collecting cultural revolution has
energized ans rom new customers o school age
to grandma & grandpa dusting o their turntables or
buying a record player and rediscovering the joy that
is collecting and listening to music that isnt a mp3
f le or a click on their computer.
Happily Horizon Records, a survivor since 1975, is
no exception to this vinyl fl avored rejuvenating trend.
Record Store Day is a blast and a welcome boon as
the new era unolds. Horizon will celebrate like many
o our music retail brethren nation wide with a ull
day starting at 8am there is our 13TH Annual Music
Yard Sale and simultaneously music collectors will
pour into the shop trying to grab copies o over 300
limited edition one day only record store day releases
that are available only to participating independent
record stores. There will be live music perormances
all aternoon and ood specials in The Bohemian Ca.Its a kind o carnival, scavenger hunt, and rock n roll
amily re-union sort o atmosphere.
At the end o the day Horizon believes every day is
record store day, which is why we still do what we
do, but it is nice to celebrate the culture o music
and the community aspect o what a record store is
beore we become
a total rarity like the
amily hardware
store and such.
Onward! Grasping the
cherished past and
carrying it into the
uture.

Kim Sholly moved rom Madison, Wisconsin to
Greenville in 2002 and the frst thing she looked
or was a place to set up her black and white flm
darkroom. She ound one in a newly renovated
building on S. Main Street in the West End. Shortly
ater moving in, she ounded the popular WestEnd
Darkroom Photo School in the buildings surrounding
2700 square oot space. The acility was dedicated
to the appreciation o photography in the Greenville
area, and although it centered on the large public
darkroom, it also oered a variety o classes in flm
and digital photography, with darkroom rentals and a
gallery specializing in exhibiting work by local artists
and photographers.
Kim closed the school ater a transer o building
ownership, and moved her darkroom to West
Greenville, to the back o Glen Millers studio and
gallery, Gallery 1266.
Kim continues to work only in flm photography and
states that as photography continues its advance into
the technologically sophisticated digital realm, she
wants to turn back in time to historic photographic
processes to a time when simply capturing light
onto a light-sensitive surace was all that was needed
to create photographic beauty. She eels that while
todays cameras, computers, and sotware programs
are continually updated with bigger, aster, more
advanced versions o themselves, she preers to take
the low-tech approach by using flm,
and the cameras and equipment
some up to 75 years oldwhich
time has not made obsolete, and
which allow her to create the
images by hand in the darkroom.
The photo on the ront cover o this
months issue o ete was shot with
a handmade pinhole box camera
and printed on photo paper that
expired in 1972.
Many o you may know Kims name through the
Metropolitan Arts Councils ArtNews eblasts, one o the
many ways Kim helps support the arts in Greenville
rom her position as Project Director o MAC.

A D O S E O F
Outside was perection. The sun shone. The breeze blew. The birds sang and children reeled
with delight. But inside was darkness. Despair. Inside was where he thought o her. Where he
dreamed o her. Inside was where he just heard the news. Inside was where he just lost her.
She f rst came to him as i on a breeze. Light and rereshing. An unexpected delight. It was in
the park. His park. The place he came every weekday. His sanctuary. He would come to the par
and enter a dierent plane o reality. A reality o one. Everyone everything else aded into
a blur. Even his thoughts and emotions would dull to an inaudible hum. He came here just to
be. To engage his senses in the natural world, leaving behind that o man. This conjured reality
consisted o warm sunlight, the scent o grass, an occasional misty rain and always a rereshin
breeze. And it was his. Alone.
It was a Friday in September. The weather was warm, but the breeze made it bearable. Hisbench was in the shade when the trees held their leaves, so there he sat in isolationist bliss.
Thats when she walked by. He never noticed anyone during his daily hour-long respite, so why
did her notice her? Certainly she was beautiul. But the city is ull o beautiul women, what did
her care? How did she enter his solitary plane? He was more curious than concerned. Although
uninvited, she was not unwelcomed. Why her? Why now? Had she always been here and he jus
noticed? Would she return?
He thought about her over the weekend. Nothing specif c, or improper, more abstract. The line
o her torso. The curve o her hip. The way her hair bounced as she walked. He was at oddswith himsel the ollowing Monday. His anticipation betrayed his sense o purpose. He went to
the park or isolation. To shut down. But there he sat with a schoolboys anticipation, noticing

everyone and everything around him. Then he made out her orm. Approaching rom the
distance. He would have hid i he could. Although an outside observer would have noticed no
apparent change in his demeanor rom every other lunch hour rom every other day, he elt as
i he were a spectacle. He watched her more closely this time. Out o the corner o his eye o
course.
Her walk was conf dent without a trace o arrogance. She didnt smile, but she didnt rown
either. Her step had purpose, but she was not rushed. There was something else. Something
was missing. A purse. She carried no purse, nor bag o any kind. Where was she going? Everywoman in the city carried something. She was dressed well skirt, heels she certainly
wasnt exercising. So what was is it? As she passed by, he caught the slightest hint o
perume. Nothing specif c, just a shit in the breeze. He decided then to stop watching her,
or ear o making an ass o himsel. Besides, watching her walk away wouldnt be right. He
would play her stroll over again in his imagination and decided the best word to describe her
aura was grace. So thats what he called her.
Eventually, he came to sense her presence and the rest o the world aded back to its typical
obsolescence. He was lost again in his private existence and her presence was a welcomedbreeze. He didnt see her every day. But he saw her enough. Enough to see the changing
ashions, the harried days, the occasional spring in her step and weight on her shoulders. She
became entwined in his world. And he never gave her as much as the nod o his head or the
wink o his eye.
It was a Saturday. He was at home reading the paper with a cup o coee and a lightly
buttered croissant. Just like every other Saturday. He was startled to see her picture. He
checked his bearings then went back to his paper. She had died in the reeway pile-up earlier
that week. The uneral was on Monday. She was a mother o two. Her name was Michelle. Shewas gone. And inside, part o him broke. Forever.

SPONSORED BANDS
The Note RopersCOMING TO THE HANDLEBAR
APRIL 16th
Upstates best country croon-ers return for a boot-scootin bashThe Note Ropers, one of the mostpopular bands to sprout from theUpstates fertile musical soil, evokesREAL country music, the kind com-mercial radio doesnt play anymore.Way back before Music Inc. tookover Nashville and turned countrymusic to into shiny pop-twang with
manufactured blondes and Ken-dollcrooners, dirt-fi ngernailed singerscrooned about trains, guns, dogs,
cheatin, boozin, lovin (good, wrong and otherwise). The Note Ropers take their cuesfrom the honky tonk and rockabilly of the 30s through 60s, the feet-tappin, heart-bendinsounds of Jimmie Rodgers and Marty Robbins, Buck Owens and Bob Wills, Johnny Cashand Jason and the Scorchers. Great infuences, great band, great fun. And a great crowd.

What do you have when you combine an orthodontist,
accountant, an apartment service manager and Upstate
business owners o Sign South and R & U Alarm Company?
Greenvilles very own Honkabilly band, The Note Ropers. I
this is your f rst introduction to The Note Ropers, you are
cheating yoursel to one FUN, swinging & toe tapping great
time. Youre also missing OLD SCHOOL country twang with
infl uences rom some o the f nest including Elvis, Hank
Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Buck Owens &
Faron Young, just to name a ew, that seem almost extinct
in todays music scene. Somehow I was lucky enough to
get an aternoon with Don Hunt, Chris Harrison, Chris Crat
& John Ervin (Mike Bagwell was MIA) to drink some ice
cold adult beverages and learn The Note Ropers story.
While having a good time is this bands top priority, they
owe all o their success to their riends and ans and the
grateulness and humbleness exudes rom all 5 members.
In the past 18 months, these guys have gone rom tossing
around the idea o playing some music, buying a bass o
ebay, traveling to Nashville and alling in love with honky
tonk and bringing it back to Greenville to create a one o a
kind local sensation. Each member brings a bit o
eclecticism to make The Note Ropers one o a kind andstand out rom the rest. Chris Crat (vocals and writes
music) was in a high school band called Blue Highway;
Don Hunt plays the guitar and is one o the music writers;
Mike Bagwell provides the twang with the steel guitar;
Chris Harrison plays the bass he bought o Ebay and
taught himsel to play; and John Ervin, who has been adrummer with several upstate bands along with playing
with Train - has designed and rocked their spinning drums
The guys like to throw in some washboard, have the ever
or some cowbell & also some steel drums and just or
added measure they wear the inamous
rhinestone encrusted costumes with big
cowboy hats.

Presently, this very amily oriented band has only played
shows around the Upstate including their upcoming
shows April 16th at The Azalea Fest in Pickens (daytime)
and The Handlebar that evening. To date, their greatest
opportunities have been to headline Palmetto Musics
1965 Benefi t For Haitiand being a presenter at
TedX Greenville 2011.
Like Ive said beore, The Note Ropers are a band youre
going to want to see and experience very soon. I truly
believe that they are the goods or Greenville and could
become quite well known throughout the country. The
image they portray brings back the REAL eel o country
and a bit o nostalgia or anyone that was a part o that
era thats slowly disintegrating. More than anything that I
learned through an aternoon o hanging out with the
band, The Note Ropers are a hilarious, gracious, lively
and talented group o musicians that are not looking or
stardom -although it wouldnt be such a bad thing- but
merely to make some great music and have the most
un, which is apparent in every show they do.

At TEDx Greenville, which I recently attended (along with 400
o my best riends) its easy to walk away inspired. Ater all, thats
the whole point each speaker has the potential to turn
your brain in a direction its never been beore.
With TED, you learn that each speaker holds
unexpected surprises, and that you cant judge
whether or not youll like what someone will
say based on how they look or what they do
or a living or how old they are.
And you think you know this, but then you
are reminded every 15 minutes. And or
me, the most unexpected surprise this
year at least or me was Greenville
Parkour. Imagine fve or six young guys
jumping and and running and hopping
all over walls and canopies and chairs and
beams. It was the most beautiul thing I
had seen. (Dont know what it is? Stop here
and fnd parkour on Google or YouTube. Ill
wait)
See, Im not uneducated when it comes to the arto parkourits something Ive ound interesting or
years, watching video clips online and just reveling in
the antastical art that it is. But its always something done
in Caliornia. In New York. In Germany. In London. But
never in Greenville. Never.
I grew up in Greenville. Were not that cool. Were not that
trendy. Or at leastmaybewe werent. But the act that
Greenville is now cool enough to have parkour literally
brings me to tears.
We really have come so ar, even as recently as the past 15
years. Isnt it great that we can celebrate that? Isnt it cool thatGreenville is cool? But even better than thatand this is
what is so excitingthese guysyoung as they areare poised
to take charge and inspire uture generations.
See, you dont end up at TEDx without having a message. You
dont end up there without the ability and capacity to inspire
people. Sure, these guys may be running and jumping around like
jack rabbits, but the truth isthey are the uture.
And that is the coolest thing ever.

FirethornUntil I was 18 all our Grandparents lived in North Augusta and The Masters was in our blood.
As a child, I sat beside the bunker across rom Sarazens bridge with my Granddad Spivey on the 15thhole all day. He taught me to appreciate the art, patience and honor o gol as the players jousted with
this storied bit o land. Granddad Johnson walked me around Amen Corner and regaled me with tales o
Hogan and Jones as i they talked with him regularly.
I learned to adore this quiet church. I carry the sounds o their voices and the whirl o the wind through
the pines in my mind. Every hole is a scene in my dreams and Jack plays each stroke as my hero. I can
close my eyes at this very moment and sense mysel willing his shot closer to the hole.
Having my amilys olklore so intertwined with this hallowed place gives me a canvas on which to paint
some o my ondest memories.
I learned greatness on these grounds and humility.
I saw excitement and wonder on a most perectly groomed stage.
I could tell which roar was rom which hole and who had caused it.
was it Jack?
it was an eagle, I know!
There really are Bear tracks all over 16.
I ell in love or the f rst time at the Masters. I ell in love again there 15 years later. I used to look or botho them in the crowds until a ew years ago.
In the 80s I would strive to attend only on Fridays so I would be able to ollow Jack in case he missed
the cut. I would ollow him anywhere. In 86 I strolled the course with him - enthralled that he would
make the cut. I knew I would possibly see him on TV over the weekend. I cried while he was on the back
nine that Sunday. I saw glory.
Jack is long retired and the urge or me to go to this wondrous place is mostly gone now. Except or a
ew trips with my buddy Chip I just want to keep the dream as it was.
My childhood came to an end in 1986 as my dreams were ulf lled and I will remember my heroes until
my last breath my two Granddads and Jack.
I learned it all at Firethorn and wandering Amen Corner.
Robert Redord narrates this dream and Raes Creek runs through it.
It is spring.
