There is a lot to be said about honesty, especially if it just comes

naturally, like breathing. How a person comes and goes in this world

    frequently goes unnoticed.

When I am around an artist that is genuinely honest, I

always tend to notice. In fact, I tend to do more than just

notice. I listen. As a producer, I get paid to listen. But there

is a big difference in forcing yourself to listen and forcing

    yourself not to.

There have been a few artists that have come through

my studio that have made me rethink what I do and how

I do it. Kathy Kelley is one of them. The way she crafts a

song is just pure. Theres no smoke and mirrors, no hiding

behind studio magic, just honest songs written because

they had to come out somehow.

Spending time in the studio with Kathy,

you might hear Im sorry a few dozen

times, and Im not sure if I like that. She

is the typical singer-songwriter in that she

thinks her guitar playing sucks and is just a

necessary evil to write her songs. Further,

you might even hear her complain about

her voice. But at that point everyone in

earshot just yells shut up, because her

    voice sounds like an angel.

In fact, on first hearing Kathys debut album

Buck Up Little Camper, you would think

she was a seasoned pro. Most of the songs on the record stay looselyin the lines of what is called Americana. But Buck Up Little Camperalso

    ventures into folk and blues.

And her lyrics take you behind the wall all of us put up to be safe in our

own little worlds. Kathy has found a place in her lyrics where that wall

is not necessary. If fact she gladly invites you in, and offers you some

sweet tea. My advice, enjoy the tea.

Greenville has made a name for itself when it comes to developing green spaces for the entire

community to enjoy. The creation of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, stretching from Travelers Rest through

downtown Greenville, adds many miles of beautiful paths for bicycling, walking and running that

not only attract local residents, but tourists as well. The success of these projects and a move

toward trail-based tourism around the country has inspired a new variety of landscape designers.

Ride Garden, LLC is the brainchild of a group of Upstate friends from differing backgrounds who share

a passion for non-traditional sports and enhancing communities through outdoor recreation while protecting the

environment. The partners utilize their own skills and strategic partnerships with other area businesses to create

innovative parks that are destined to become examples for communities far beyond the Upstate.

John Darrohn, of Darrohn Engineering, has 20 years experience as a civil engineer and has played a key role in

several noteworthy projects around the Upstate, including the Swamp Rabbit Trail. John is a fifteen-year member

of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, or SORBA, a non-profit advocacy group that promotes land access,

trail preservation, and sustainable trail development in order to enhance mountain bike touring, racing, fun, and

fellowship for all mountain bicyclists in the southeastern United States. Since relocating to Greenville from his

hometown of Charleston, John has continued to increase his role in supporting local bicycling advocacy efforts.

Most recently John has been working on the development of Greenvilles Bicycle Master Plan, a plan which

serves as a roadmap for future bicycling facilities.

Matt McClain is the founder/President of Ground Industries, an internationally-recognized leader in the sport of

mountain boarding, and part owner of Invert Action Sports, a skate and surf lifestyle retail store on River Street in

Greenvilles West End. McClains entry into the mountain board market at its infancy nearly ten years ago gave

him a unique perspective on the challenges non-traditional sports enthusiasts face when seeking to commune

with other riders. Both men share an interest in protecting and enhancing the environment while providing

recreational opportunities that the entire community can enjoy.

Darrohn and McClain are joined by Richard Guilmette and Tom Sears. Guilmette, a long-time mountain boarder,

has parlayed his professional riding and building experience into park-building. Guilmette has overseen the

construction of various southeastern mountain bike and board riding centers, most recently High Ground, an

extreme mountain board and mountain bike terrain park at Beech Mountain Ski Resort in North Carolina.

Sears, a Greenville native and Furman alumni, is an attorney and avid outdoor enthusiast. Sears has the belief

that local expansion of recreational opportunities is a great concept for continuity and growth as it connects

different communities in the Upstate in a meaningful, active way. It also showcases one of the best regions in the

country for outside activity and enjoyment.

Ride Garden specializes in sustainable, ride-able, trails and

terrain gardens that invite the community to interact with

unique environmental features while enjoying beautiful and

innovative landscape architecture during the recreational

experience. They use onsite, recyclable and reusable

materials that are both natural and manmade. One of the

foundations of the Ride Garden vision is to create riding

features of artistic design with clear organic expression

says McClain. It is critical to our mission that we perform

a full inventory of a particular site, making notes of important historical and

natural features to protect or enhance. We look for opportunities to harvest

and reclaim from the land, which can greatly reduce costs normally necessary

    for building materials.

The City of Pickens has recently engaged Ride Garden to join Greenville in

expanding Upstate residents opportunities to come together and enjoy their

community. Pickens intends to develop Town Creek Park into a recreational

destination with numerous trails and other elements. The parcel is a 90+ acretract of underutilized land in the heart of downtown Pickens, just 30 minutes

    from Downtown Greenville.

Ride Gardens can be grown in all sizes: simple, technical skill sites, where riders

can practice jumping and navigating more challenging terrain in an approachable

environment. And, as in the case of Town Creek Park, a compilation of trails and

ride gardens from rollercoaster-style boardwalks to innovative environmental

features. Each garden has its own character and purpose, allowing park goers to

choose their adventure. Traditional features such as a dog park and picnic sites are also included. This will be a

destination for the entire region and beyond.

Furthermore, Town Creek Park is only one part of an even more ambitious plan in the works. Ride Garden is

developing a master plan for Pickens County, called PELCOR, which refers to the Pickens/Easley/Liberty

Corridor. The three cities have passed resolutions locally supporting PELCOR. The PELCOR initiative will place

Pickens County among the most progressive communities in the country through the development of bicycle-

friendly corridors that link parks in the three communities, Town Creek Park included.

Greenville has made a name for itself as an example of how to

build a successful and thriving community through thoughtful

development that places an emphasis on outdoor gathering

spaces. As the Upstate continues to recognize the benefits ofresponsible growth, surrounding communities and businesses are

joining Greenville in reinventing themselves in ways that will both

facilitate economic growth and community spirit. Ride Garden is

another example of how one good idea leads to another.

To grow a Ride Garden in your community, please contact

    Matt McClain at [email protected].

The Interplay of light and texture is a prominent influence

on the choice of subject and technique. I think of myself

as an expressionist. I am an intuitive expressive colorist,

striving to give the viewer a sense of uplifting inner

    connection to my images.

The artist true education and self discovery began after he graduated from Furman University with a

degree in the visual arts in 1970. Forty years later Guy has painted and sold paintings all over the world.

During the same time frame, he has worked in nine studio-galleries in downtown Greenville, SC and haspainted for months at a time in studios in NYC, Munich, Bermuda, Montreal, Paris and San Francisco.

Guy Stevens is a pioneer of color and vibrancy. Although he has drawn from many impressionist and

expressionist masters, his style is atypical. When you stand in front of a Guy Stevens painting, you feel as

though you have been transported to an alternate reality. Each of Guys paintings is a still-shot of the visual

poetry that lives within the artist.

The Paintings of Guy Stevens offer us a travelogue of

splendid fantasies and dreamlike narratives, and while his

subject matter varies, his essential style is consistent.Employing flamboyant colors, his flat lyrical shapes suggest

qualities of both primitive and impressionistic art. He often

adopts an elevated view point giving his work a tilt in

perspective that channels extraordinary energy and

movement . He draws us into the moment with an

explosion of color, which culminates in a celebration of life.

Theres no one quite like Gene Krcelicno category of personality I can

pigeon-hole him intobut a description is necessary. Gene oozes into

your brain like a gentle creative stimulant. There is an almost rap quality

to the way he talks as ideas burst forth with a tone of wonder and comfort.

His manner has become reassuring after all the years of trials and

tribulations. Gene has found his truth and this clarity in thought and action

makes him compelling. Answers arent solutions to him anymore

actions are. Witnessing this transformation in an old friend is extremely

rewarding and seeing his mind at peace is inspirational. I am not a book

critic nor do I want to play one inside these pages, but if you are looking

to read a unique perspective on one mans travels to a higher plain

    then get Genes new book.

    Jay Spivey

The cool of a Beat poet, the soul of a Monk, and the scholarly

trappings of a Professor, Gene Krcelic speaks with clarity and force, while bouncing his wisdom in a rhythm that keeps you awake.

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, andself-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. Theodore Roosevelt

Okay, Ill admit it: the art o delegation is not something that comes easily to me. I have a personality built on

doing and getting done, and to delegate means I have to give up the one thing I dont ever

    want to give upcontrol.

Maybe this makes me a control reak. Alright, this denitely makes me a control

reak. But I envy people I see who can turn around, point at someone, and give them

    something to do.

Ive seen enough business people and politicians who can do just thatask anyone

to do anything. One o the people who pops into mind asked a janitor to answer his

phone while he was in the middle o a photoshoot. It was amazing to me that he

could give that phone call up so easily. Ater all, he didnt know who was on the other

end o that call! What i something important happened?Control is hard or me. I ollow it, almost desperately; knowing that at the

end is the reward and the ownership. Not even externallyI dont need

verbal armation as much as I need a eeling o accomplishment. But the

fip side is that when overworked, something must all through the cracks,

and that ownership is mine, as well.

Delegation has seemed almost. egotistical.to me or so long, and

I think it seems that way to others, too. To delegate seems like I just

have too much going on. Which, in a mind like mine, can

transorm into my stu is more important than

your stu. I hate eeling like that, on either side

    o the coin.

But what Ive realized (and only recently realized)

is that its more arrogant o me to not give up aphone call, a reminder, a letter or some organization.

Then, its me saying, theres no way you can do this

    as well as I can.

Someone else might not do something the same way

I would, or at the same speed, or even with the same

result, but it doesnt mean anything except that they are

dierent. And thats a rereshing thing to keep me on my

    toesconstantly learning, constantly thinking.

Delegation isnt a our-letter word. Its not a bad

or sel-important thing to do. Its simply a way to get

everything that needs to be done, done. And lets ace it: all

o us have more to do than we can do.

So, what are you not delegating?

Exactly two years ago I was preparing to sail to the

Bahamas. My itinerary included exploring the

islands for a couple of months then continuing

south to points unknown. I lived on a boat. The

weather was constantly hot, the way it was

suppose to be. In fact, my favorite phrase at the

time was, I want it so warm that the sweat just

drips off my little round brown body.

Now Im sure youve heard that phrase, If you

want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.

Well, he was getting ready to get quite the chucklebecause of me. It was a Friday afternoon when the

call came informing me that my daughter was very

ill. All thoughts of sailing anywhere went right out of

my head as I immediately packed a bag and

headed up I-95 for a 14 hour drive with

nothing but a small brown dog for

    company.

My emergency trip morphed into a

two-week stay and I began to realizehow much I had been missing an

upstate summer. The early morning walk

with the dog was almost cool and the middle of the

day pleasant. Warm, but because of lower humidity,

    not overly oppressive.

Numerous factors, including the weather, played

heavily into my decision to relocate here end of

summer 2010, which by my recollection was of an

    average temperature range.

Lets fast forward to this spring, shall we? Spring

2011. The calendar shows it was there but what

happened to it? I know Ive been busy but did I

miss an entire season? Where was my mountain

like mornings, cool with a bit of mist in the air?

My afternoons where I could bike or walk and

barely break a sweat? Evenings that would be a

bit nicer with a light sweater?

This year the dog days of summer started early

with the puppy years of spring and I dont like it.

    Ive been cheated! I want a do-over! A refund

mailed to my address ASAP, please! This sultry

steamy weather is better suited to the tropicals of

which I have been there, done that, have numerous

    t-shirts to prove it.

Little if any consolation is when I turn on the

Weather Channel and see that the entire United

States for the most part is feeling the effects of this

seemingly never ending heat wave. That is except

for the Northwest part of the country; Oregon,

    Washington State, the California mountains.

Hmmm, anyone up for a road trip?

What was that? Julie asked, as wide-eyed and alert as shes ever been.

What was what? Mark returned, starting to get irritated at her continuing jump at every sound.

It was supposed to be a relaxing, and hopefully romantic, getaway on the lake for just the two of them.

But Mark soon realized the isolation of the cabin that he thought would inspire relaxation and romance, served only to stimulate Julies (previously) hidden fears of bear attacks, coyote maimings and the

possible run-ins with hockey-loving serial killers.

It was autumn and the lake and surrounding mountains were a picture postcard of Adirondack beauty.

During the day, Julie and Mark hiked and took pictures and rode horses and paddled the lake and did a

the things a couple of urban tourists might do at the end of another season. But once the sun went

down and they were back at the cabin, the stillness of the lake and the darkness of the sky seemed to

work in direct contrast to Mark amorous intentions.

The loons cry, which changes octave and carries so effortlessly throughout the entire lake, sounded lik

a trumpet of despair and played like the part of a movie score youd hear just before the killer attacked

At least it did to Julie. And the caws that emitted from the unseen murder of crows, sounded, in fact, lik

someone was getting murdered. The squirrels and raccoons foraging for food in the darkness, sounded

eerily similar to the noise an escaped mental patient carrying a machete would make just before he

lopped off the head of his next victim. And the settling of the old cabin as the seasons changed gave

cause to Julie ordering Mark to investigate the cabin at least three times a night.

On their last night at the cabin, as they sat around a roaring outdoor fire, Mark decided that instead of

being irritated with her nervousness, he would play into it and have a little fun. He knew it was only a

matter of time before she gave him the perfect set up, and around 11:30 that night, she did.

Has anyone ever been killed on this lake? She asked, not really wanting to know the answer.

The Cabin on Fourth LakeBy Tim ONeill

Um, I dont know, he said, intentionally appearing to skirt the question. You want another smore?

She took the bait. If you know something, you better tell me! She ordered. And he sat back and

    began to tell the tale.

It was about six years ago, he began. They called him the Fourth Lake Killer, because he killed three

people on this very lake. I guess he sees himself as some sort of defender of the loons or something.

One time someone left some rat poison out or something and four loons died from it. The guy that left

out the poison was fined, but nothing serious. And then at the end of the season, he was found stabbed

in the heart with a loon feather sticking out of his chest. Crazy, huh?

Julie was riveted. But you said three people died?

Oh yeah. Mrs. Johnson across the lake about four years ago. And Mr. Smith on the other end about

two years ago. Each stabbed with a feather in their chest. And, you know, come to think of it, each was

    in the fall. Wild, huh.

But dont you see?! Its bee every two years! At the end of the season! And hes still got one feather to

deliver. Why the hell did you bring me here? The night seemed to get a little darker for Julie. Mark had

    to suppress his laughter.

Oh geez! Will you settle down? All weekend youve been like this. Theres nothing to worry about! Im

going to get some more wood. And with that he slipped behind the wood pile and out of sight. After a

few minutes, Julie got nervous and called out to him with no response. She stood up and called again.

Nothing. Then she heard the leaves rustle and the crows caw and the loons cry was deafening in her

ears. Then she saw a shadowy figure appear in the corner of her eye and shout out Boo!

The doctor said mark was lucky to get away with only second-degree burns from being knocked in the

fire. His broken nose would heal fine and even though there was much pain from being kicked wherehed prefer not to be, there was no permanent damage. It was a very long ride home.

There is nothin like a dame,Nothin in the world,There is nothin you can name

That is anythin like a dame!~ South Pacific

OK, I have to admit a certain fascination with womens roller derby that is traced back

to when I was 11 and Raquel Welch starred in Kansas City Bomber. And I have to

confess to having never actually seen a roller derby match.

I learned about our Greenville Derby Dames through seeing various posters or

facebook comments related to my buddy Jay Pass Da Mic Handler and I

decided to check out this sports marketing enterprise by visiting a Skatewith the Derby Dames event at Skateland USA. I had no preconceived notions

since I really knew almost nothing about our local flat track team. Wow, did I learn

    a lot that night!

This team is a well oiled, followed, smart sports marketing extravaganza!

I got to meet and talk with Amber Rage, Hellvis, Lorena Block It, Conway Hitty, Daisy Do Wrong

and a few others. Oh my...you have to visit their website just to read the names and quotes

    from these sweet women.

There is a big match coming up that I am going to use as my first experience with live

derbying July 16th at The Pavillion. It seems that the Rogue Roller Girls from

Fayetteville, NC are a little bit upset that they lost last time they played.

There is a passion that each of our Dames conveys when they start talking about how they got

into this sport. Their eyes light up talking about how this sport is taking off around the country.

In talking with Coach Josh, I learned that upwards of 400+ people turn out for home games!

He said that there are teams that draw 1,200 fans at each game and constantly sell out

of tickets. Again, I had no idea.

Now we are cooking with heat! One of the most unique marketing tools the Dames have

come up with is a cookbook called The Dames Dish It Out!

Now, I am no food critic and I am definitely not a chefbutfrom a marketing standpointI was enthralled with this

cookbook and I spent the better part of an hour leafing

through the recipes. I am here to tell you that the titles of

the dishes alone are worth the $15 for the book.

    Shush Puppies

    Call It Off Crabcakes

    Stormie Burgers

    Skater Tot Casserole

    Hip Whip Chicken

Plow Stop PotatoesAnd my favorite...Banana Split Lip Pudding!

There are also plenty of tips in this culinary guide that range from how to tenderize

meat to lightly coating your face with hairspray to keep make-up from sweating off.

    This cookbook is brilliant!

The Greenville Derby Dames have a great website with tons of content, personalprofiles, merchandise and events. Check them out at
