Still the “BEST DEAL” in LA
Olivia's storyBy Jackie RybeckFEZtival Publicist
Olivia Lee is an active 11-year-old girl who loves all sorts of activities including many forms of dance, piano and art.
Her mom, Nancy, adores her and certainly never expected to hear a diagnosis of scoliosis at Olivia’s annual physical about a year ago.
“Doctors discovered a curvature in Olivia’s spine. She went through so many tests, and afterward a brace was fabricated for her to wear to help straighten her spine. It was a bit scary and overwhelming,” Nancy Lee said.
Lee had the support of a friend, Danny Morin, whom she’s known for over 15 years.
“He’s someone I could trust, and he’s supported me through all of Olivia’s appointments and challenges.”
Being a Shriner, Morin did more than just support the Lee family.
“It was in the spring and Nancy was just not seeing much progress and asked if she should get a second opinion. I contacted Tim Luttrell, who is also a Shriner and member of the board of Governors at Springfield, to see if scoliosis was something that was treated at the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in Springfield, and it was,” said Morin.
Knowing that travel for potential patients from Maine can be challenging, Kora Shriners offer orthopedic screening clinics in May, to determine if children qualify to become patients.
“We had just missed this Clinic by days,” said Luttrell. “But an Outreach Clinic was scheduled for June, where our staff from Springfield comes to Maine to do follow-ups for existing patients so we were able to get Olivia screened at that time. Our staff felt that we could help Olivia’s scoliosis and recommended an MRI be taken and that Olivia visit Springfield for further evaluation.”
Lee was very happy and grateful to these local Shriners for their help in getting care for Olivia.
“I didn’t hesitate,” said Lee. “I’ll do whatever I can for my daughter and I needed a second opinion, so we took the trip to Springfield.”
“The quality of care at the hospital was amazing,” said Lee.
“The hospital was beautiful and the staff was so caring and loving. We spent the day there and they adjusted her brace in several areas.”
“And it was a lot of fun!” added Olivia. “There was a game room where the floor was interactive and it changed as you moved. You could play soccer or any game you wanted. We also got to visit Boston on our way home.”
Being a patient of a Shriner’s hospital is not all about medical care.
“We are committed to providing the best care for children in our specialty areas of Orthopaedics, Burn Care, Spinal Cord Injury, and Cleft Lip and Palate, regardless of a family’s ability to pay,” remarked Luttrell. “In Olivia's case, we were able to provide some additional services beyond treating her condition.”
Next month, Olivia will attend another outreach clinic in Lewiston to chart her progress and if new adjustments are necessary they will be able to do it right there.
“I know there’s been progress,” said Lee. “We have seen a visible difference since August.”
Lee and her daughter have found out first-hand what the
Shriners are all about.
“Without the help of Danny, Tim and all the Shriners, I don’t think it would be possible for Olivia to do all the activities she can do today. They both have such a big heart,” said Lee.
“It’s all about helping the kids,” said Morin. “Shriners help people; it’s what we do.”
For more information regardng Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, visit www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org. To request an appointment for a specific specialty, call the intake numbers listed below as it relates to your nearest Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

Kora shrine Center renovations complete with the help of the FEZtivalBy Jackie RybeckFEZtival Publicist
The FEZtival of Trees has grown into the pr e m ie r hol id a y event i n Cent ra l
Maine. It not only provides a wonderful event for families throughout the region, but generates funds to support the good work that is done by the Shriners.
With the deterioration of the façade of the Kora Shrine Center, the Kora Building trustees made a decision four years ago to renovate, preser ve and protect t he building.
And w ith the help of the FEZtival of Trees, funds were raised in order to help with the necessar y renovation work.
Barr y Gates, president of t he Kor a Sh r i ne Center F o u n d a t i o n , e x p l a i n e d why these renovations are necessary.
“Our forefathers built this magnificent building over 100 years ago. It is now our responsibility to make sure it lives in the heart of the city for at least another 100 years.”
In Ma rch 2011, Bu i ld ing Envelope Consultants were engaged to do a forensic inspect ion. The pur pose
of this inspection was an attempt to determine the causes associated with the fractures in the terra cotta elements surrounding the window assemblies on the front of the building.
“The inspection revea led over-st ressed clay br icks and terra cotta above and
around the window units. Steel columns installed were ineffectively picking up all the dead loads, leaving the bricks and terra cotta to pick up loads which contribute to fa i lures. It a lso found moisture damage in several locations adjacent to the terra cotta features.”
Gates described the primary goal of the renovation.
The pr ima r y goa l of t he overhaul was to repair or replace sills and terra cotta columns and stabilize them. Where needed, load-bearing coils were to be inserted into
joints between the bricks to pick up the load. Pieces that were too deteriorated were to be sent to California and duplicated to ma ke each

In 2013 the lower portion of the building was completed by Joseph Gnazzo Company from Union, Connecticut. As well as being low bidder, they were chosen for the project as t hey have been in t he forefront of combining old-world craftsmanship with the latest in technology to bring the best in exterior structural restoration.
“On May 12 of this year, the Gnazzo Company returned,” said Gates, “working on the middle and upper part of t he bu i ld i ng. Kora Building trustees are extremely happy to announce that the project is complete and are very pleased with the great job the contractor has done.

'Tis the FEZtival seasonBy Jackie RybeckFEZtival Publicist
The holiday season is upon us. And for the Lewiston-Auburn area it begins at the Kora Shrine Center with the 9th annual FEZtival of Trees!
Visiting the Center is quite an experience on its own, with its verdigris domes and exquisitely carved windows. Once inside, its stunning, wall-to-wall murals leave no doubt as to why it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The FEZtival of Trees began nine years ago as a fundraiser to keep this majestic building in operation in order to continue its work and each year it has surpassed the year before. Starting with 23 trees and 2,500 visitors the first year, it has grown to over 60 trees with more than 20,000 visitors last year.
Past Potentate Barry Gates feels that while the building itself is worth the trip, the trees really make it a rare and matchless event.
“T he t r e e s p on s or s h av e outdone themselves year after year, and I’m sure this one will prove to be no exception,” said Gates. “They truly embrace the idea of creating a new and exceptional theme for
their tree, making each year a distinctive and unique experience.
“We have some groups that compete against each other to have the most popular tree!” he said. “We are very fortunate to have such support from local businesses, organizations and Shrine Clubs.”
The theme for this year’s FEZtival is “An Enchanted Christmas.” And what better place to get lost in an enchanted forest than at the Kora Shrine Center! Christmas trees, pixies, elves and fairies will transform many of t hese historica l rooms and hallways into a magical dreamland.
For t hose who l i ke more t ha n just magnificent trees and decor, there will be a silent auction with numerous items to bid on, a 50-50 raff le, the famous Lottery Tree decorated with $500 worth of lottery tickets, and last but not least, Reggie’s Sales and Service has donated an ice auger worth $900 that a lucky winner will receive.
The aroma of popcorn, soups, pizza, baked goods and daily luncheon and dinner specials will lead you straight to the dining hall which will be filled with 28 crafters for any shopper’s pleasure.
Santa will be taking time out from his busy
schedule for the entire week to listen to children’s hopes for Christmas and photos with the white-haired wonder will be available as well. The famous Fishing Pond will be open for the season to reel in toys and treats for the little ones.
Daily, live entertainment in the mezzanine, including such talents as Lionel Meservier, Bob Gendreau, and the Lewiston High School Band and Strings will certainly tickle the senses and sounds of the season. While checking out the schedule for your
favorite entertainers, please notice special days at the FEZtival such as Senior Day and Chamber Night’s Business After Hours catered by the Kora FEZtival Food Group.
Admission is only $2 -- please share with us in this magical occasion guaranteed to get you into the spirit of Christmas while supporting our local Shriners and their great cause.
Let the FEZtival season begin!

Why do shriners wear a fez?
The fez is one of the most recog n i z able s y mbols of Shriners International, and was adopted as the Shriners’ of f icia l headgear in 1872. Named after the city of Fez, Morocco, the hat represented t he A r a bi a n t he m e t he fraternity was founded on.
It also serves as an outward symbol of one’s membership in the fraternity. Much like t he white apron worn by Masons as a symbol of their brotherhood, the fez is worn only by Shriners as a symbol of their membership in this unique fraternity.
Today t he fez is wor n at S h r i n e r s' f u n c t i o n s , i n parades and at outings as a way of gaining exposure for the fraternity. Members customize their fez to show t hei r a l leg ia nce to t hei r temple.
Look closely at a fez and you w i l l a lso lea rn ot her i m p o r t a n t i n f o r m a t i o n about its wearer, such as membership in Shrine clubs, specia l roles w it h i n t he organization and much more. Each fez is custom made and a Shriner may own more than one fez depending on his activities and memberships.
Ma ny fa mou s fac es a nd names have proudly worn t h e r e d f e z , i n c l u d i n g e n t e r t a i n e r s , h e a d s o f government, sports figures and business leaders. Some famous names of Shriners (past and present): President Gerald Ford; General Douglas Mac A r t hu r ; s i nger, Br ad Paisley; professional golfer, Arnold Palmer; and Nascar driver, Sam Hornish Jr.
