The speech that speaks the unspeakable Merleau-Ponty and the problem of transcendental language

The paper suggests a new approach to the problem of engagement by

prompting phenomenologists to consider Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of

language. As a basis for our discussion, we first examine Husserl's

definition of “phenomenological reduction” in his later works and explore

Merleau-Ponty's understanding of this issue through his thesis, as follows:

“The most important lesson of the reduction is the impossibility of a

complete reduction.” Second, we elucidate Merleau-Ponty’s assertion by

highlighting his fundamental idea in which there is no thought without

language. This means that returning from “the world instituted by language”

to the origin of our experience (i.e., the “primordial silence”) requires

executing a “gesture which breaks this silence.” Finally, we assess the

impact of these ideas. We conclude that a serious acceptance of Merleau-

Ponty's discussion on language requires radical changes to

phenomenological methods. We sketch these changes by referring to a

problem that was pioneered by Eugen Fink (i.e., “transcendental language”

in Sixth Cartesian Meditation), and we claim that phenomenology is not a

form of meditation, but an action entailing a responsibility to others.

La Parole et le Passé

L’interprétation rosenzweigienne de Schelling et la philosophie de Heidegger

Dans cet article, nous proposons d'examiner la "philosophie narrative"

chez Rosenzweig, et de mettre en lumière ses liens et dissonances avec la

philosophie heideggérienne. La "philosophie narrative" signifie ici la

réflexion sur la temporalité de la parole. En tant que réfutation de la

philosophie qui traite exclusivement de l'essence, elle regarde le facteur

"temps" comme fondamental dans toute conception de l'essence.

Selon Rosenzweig, le prédicat, qui apporte une information sur le sujet,

ne peut pas être identique à lui et relève d’une plus grande complexité. En

effet, même si le sujet et le prédicat sont égaux, car considérés comme thèse

de l’essence, dans la perspective de la « philosophie narrative », le prédicat

n’exprime pas uniquement le sujet, puisqu’il doit aussi exprimer la valeur

temporelle.

Nous verrons dans cet article que Rosenzweig partage cette perspective

avec Schelling, en particulier la notion du “passé”, ainsi qu’avec Heidegger.

Schelling, dans Les Âges du monde, observe qu'il existe un "dialogue silencieux"

à l'intérieur de l’homme, où la séparation constitue une distance temporelle.

Chez Heidegger, dans son approche de la "situation herméneutique" qui

contient le moment du "déjà", se trouve en germe la temporalité singulière

qui naît dans le présent et met en lumière le passé.

Par cette approche, Schelling et Heidegger thématisent l'"Histoire"

comme sujet de recherches philosophiques. Cette "Histoire" ne signifie pas

une continuité chronologique, et doit être entendue comme un fait complexe,

renouvelé par le dialogue avec le "passé".

On Heidegger’s Dialogues

Will, Gelassenheit, Middle Voice

Heidegger authored several dialogues, who in their content but also

in their very dialogic form, throw into question the concept of will.

Granted that the Heideggerian critique of metaphysics is part and parcel

with his critique of the concept of will, it is only right that these dialogues

be positioned at the very centre of his philosophical programme. For

Heidegger attempts to supersede what he calls the ‘language of

metaphysics’; the dialogues should be considered the practical

manifestation of this attempt.

Ἀγχιβασίη’, the most famous of these dialogues, mobilises the

key term ‘Gelassenheit’ which, its fundamental importance to his critique

of the ‘metaphysics of will’ notwithstanding, is scarcely dealt with outside

of this text. The reason for its absence may be that this concept refuses to

be taken up in the ‘normal’ philosophical dissertation.

The Heideggerian critiques of the ‘language of metaphysics’ and the

‘metaphysics of will’ have their merits. I wonder however whether this

attempt has to find its expression in such a concept as ‘Gelassenheit’. This

paper, by working through the ancient grammatical category of the middle

voice, will seek to make clear what it is that Heidegger had tried to

overcome in his incessant critique of this ‘our’ language.

Heidegger’s Interpretation of Aristotle

Heidegger is said to have interpreted Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics

ontologically in Being and Time (Sein und Zeit). Although interpretations often

center on book 6, consideration of the other books makes possible a more

comprehensive reading of Heidegger’s Being and Time. It should be noted

that in Aristotle’s theory of action a character (ēthos) is based on a state

(hexis), and he indicates the changeability of the character by the agent’s

regret. Heidegger translates Aristotle’s terminology proairesis as being-

resolved, although it typically is used to refer to choice. Practical wisdom

(phronēsis) is also Aristotle’s terminology which refers to unconcealment

(alētheia) and Heidegger interprets it as resoluteness (Entschlossenheit).

Resoluteness is the eminent mode of disclosure (Erschlossenheit, which

functions as unconcealment) to sight for action (praxis). Irresoluteness

(Unentschlossenheit) contrasts with Aristotle’s lack of self-control. Agents

who are lack of self-control have time to regret their actions, while

irresolute Dasein “has no time” (Sein unt Zeit 410). Heidegger develops his

notion of temporality based on Aristotle’s theory of time and regards

Aristotle’s time itself as ordinary time, except for time for practical wisdom.

Although resoluteness and irresoluteness are formally contrary terms, they

both reveal human existence by interpreting the underlying Aristotelian

notions.

Heidegger und die griechische Tragödie

In der Rückschau auf das Werk des Aischylos, „Der gefesselte Prometheus“

Es ist bekannt, dass Heidegger seit Anfang der 1930er Jahre in seiner Entwicklung der

Seinsfrage auf den altgriechischen „Anfang“ zurückgeht. Aber es sind nicht nur die

sogenannten „anfänglichen Denker“, d. h. Anaximander, Heraklit und Parmenides, die

Heidegger interessierten. Er gewinnt seine Einsichten auch von zeitgenössischen Dichtern,

vor allem von Pindar und von den Tragödiendichtern. Die Beziehung zwischen Sophokles

und Heidegger ist bereits in diesem Sinne thematisiert, auf ihre Bedeutsamkeit hingewiesen

und die Funktion Hölderlins in deren Hintergrund aufgezeigt worden. Im Gegensatz dazu

ist die Beziehung zwischen Aischylos und Heidegger bisher kaum behandelt worden.

Die Absicht meines Aufsatzes besteht darin, in der Rückschau auf das Werk des

Aischylos, „Der gefesselte Prometheus“, und auf der Grundlage einiger Zitate bei Heidegger

zu betrachten, welche Bedeutung das Grundmotiv dieser Tragödie für das Denken

Heideggers hatte.

Im folgenden ist zuerst anhand eines der Schwarzen Hefte (GA, 94) Heideggers Interesse

an der griechischen Tragödie im Allgemeinen erneut festzustellen, um dann die Beziehung

zwischen dem für die Seinsfrage zentralen Anfang und dem Werk des Aischylos im Speziellen

zu betrachten. Weiterhin wird durch eine Auslegung der Rektoratsrede „Die

Selbstbehauptung der deutschen Universität“ das Verhältnis zwischen Wissen als τέχνη

einerseits und Schicksal andererseits herauszuarbeiten sein. Zuletzt ist anhand der Notiz

„Besinnung“ (GA, 66) der Zusammenhang zwischen dem Feuer, der τέχνη und der Wahrheit

als ἀλήθεια zu betrachten. Durch diese Reihe von Betrachtungen möchte ich eine Perspektive auf die Frage

eröffnen, was „Prometheus“ für Heidegger bedeutet.

Heidegger’s confrontation with Plato

Plato was one of the main targets of Heidegger’s philosophy. In his

lectures and publications, Heidegger critically discussed Plato’s Theory of

Ideas and Ontology, so as to develop his own thoughts. Although many

criticisms are directed against his interpretations—such as mistranslation,

misunderstanding, and excessive appeals to etymology—we should take

Heidegger’s critical examinations seriously, for he confronted Plato’s

philosophical questions seriously and tried to answer them fruitfully. We

ourselves should confront both Plato’s philosophy and Heidegger’s

confrontation of Plato.

Heidegger first examined the concept of alētheia by analysing the

Simile of the Cave in Plato’s Republic with a lecture from the 1931/32

winter semester at the University of Freiburg. Between Plato’s original

concerns and Heidegger’s new focuses, there are a few crucial differences,

as well as many similarities. First, Plato did not ask Heidegger’s main

question—“What is truth?” Second, based on his modern concern with

Dasein, Heidegger also asked, “Who are human beings?” Third, Heidegger

interpreted the question “What is the good?” by examining the Simile of

the Sun. However, I point out crucial mistakes in his interpretations, which

cause significant misunderstandings of Plato. In addition, Heidegger

ignored the political aspects of the fourth stage of the Cave—namely, what

philosophers should do inside the Cave. This may indicate some crucial

problems of Heidegger’s political philosophy.

Heidegger’s early scholarship and his

misinterpretation of Aristotle

In his early period, Heidegger devoted himself to the study of

Aristotle but failed to have a true dialogue with him. What Heidegger

did achieve, however, was a monologue with his own personal version

of Aristotle. In this paper, I examine what I refer to as his “over-

stretched” interpretation of Aristotle in Heidegger's early seminars

and lectures. I call his interpretation over-stretched because he reads

Aristotle very freely, often inserting his own ideas into the text

without paying much attention to the context and background of

Aristotle's remarks.

One of the typical examples is his account of an Aristotelian

term ousia. According to Heidegger, Aristotle draws the

“terminological meaning” of ousia (substance or essence) from its

“customary meaning” (property, possession or estate). What bridges

the two different meanings is the implicit and “co-intended”

connotation of the term, which Heidegger understands as “being-

there,” Dasein. However, this interpretation is not convincing nor its

foundation very firm. First, the translation of the Ancient Greek,

ousia, as the German, Dasein, is not based on a secure linguistic

rationale. It is true that some of the Greek-German dictionaries list

Dasein as one of several meanings under the entry ousia, but the text

cited to support this specific translation, Sophocles Trachiniae 911, is

“doubtlessly corrupt” (R. C. Jebb). The word ousia, though attested in

all manuscripts, does not make satisfactory sense in the context, so

the editors of the text either deleted the line or revised the word into

a more suitable expression. Second, Aristotle does not derive the

terminological meaning of ousia out of its customary usage. Based on

the textual evidence, I believe that the most basic terminological sense

of ousia in Aristotle's works is “what x is,” which expresses the answer

corresponding to the question, “What is x?” and Plato uses the ousia

in this sense frequently within his own dialogues. Aristotle's

terminological meaning of ousia is an inheritance from Plato, not an

extract from its customary meaning.

Another example of Heidegger's over-stretched interpretation

of Aristotle is his reading of Aristotle's Politics. Heidegger places high

importance on the two propositions in Aristotle’s Politics, “a human

being is by nature a political animal (zôon politikon)” and “only human

beings have logos (language),” and elaborates on these propositions

with reference to other works, such as the Nicomachean Ethics, the

Rhetoric, and especially the Physics. However, it is remarkable that,

except for those two propositions, he almost entirely ignores

Aristotle's investigation in the Politics in which Aristotle provides the

description and analysis of real and concrete constitutions of the

poleis (the plural of polis, political communities), the vision of the best

kind of polis, and the suggestions for improving existing poleis. By

contrast, for Heidegger, the polis probably remains an ideal; he claims

that the Greeks are apolitical by nature and their poleis are the abodes

for the gathering and conserving truth rather than the political

communities described by Aristotle.

Although Heidegger devoted his early scholarship to the study

of Aristotle, he misunderstood or ignored many of the key points of

Aristotle’s philosophy, disregarding the context of Aristotle’s writings

and instead inserting his own interpretations into the text, leading to

his over-stretched interpretation of Aristotle.
