A Blessing for Mother’s Day

For our mothers, who have given us life and love, that we may show them reverence and love, we pray to the Lord.

For mothers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope and their family and friends support and console them, we pray to the Lord.

For mothers who have died, that God may bring them into the joy of his kingdom, we pray to the Lord.

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth, grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, Signs of the Easter season are all around us! We took some time to work with our first grade daughter, Maggie, to reflect on life in isolation. We hope you enjoy her letter to God! May the faith of our young ones be an inspiration to all of us. Looking forward to the times when we are together again! Blessings to all of you, The McCarthy Family Tom, Lauren, Maggie and Molly Dear God, Life is different these days. I’m doing school from home, I can’t get together and play with my friends, I’m watching church on TV and I’m out of my normal routine with activities. No Girl Scouts, no dance and no gymnastics. Although I miss all of this, there are so many things I’ve been able to do since I’ve been at home. I’ve been able to spend a lot of time with my family and play with my sister. I’ve been able to enjoy some nice weather while taking my dog for walks, riding my bike and learning how to rollerblade! When my family has been outside I’ve seen so many signs of Spring. There is sunshine and green grass. Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and buds are on the trees.

God, I know all these good things come from You. Help me remember that even when life gets difficult, You are always with us. Remind me to be thankful for all you have blessed me with. Help me remind others to keep the faith. God, I know you will help us to get through these times together.

Love, Maggie

Because we can’t go to Mass…

Catholics are encouraged to make a “spiritual communion”. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of practice of “spiritual communion” which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by the love God will be greatly impressed on you”” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no.34).

Catholics are also encouraged to watch local TV for Sunday Mass. Mercy Home celebrates Mass every Sunday at 9:30am on WGN, Chicago.

Our parish website; www.marymotherofdivinegrace.org has a link to Masses recorded at Divine Infant Jesus Church and Divine Providence Church. There are also links to the Cardinal’s Masses.

This week Fr. Marcin will be celebrating the 5th Sunday of Easter on May, 10, 2020.

If you can’t go to church, BE the Church.

It has been a little over a month ago that the Religious Education Program was brought to a halt, by the temporary closure of all church and school buildings/programs by the Archdiocese of Chicago; followed by the “Stay-at-Home” order issued by Illinois Governor Pritzker to curb the spread of the Coronavirus! A big Thank You to all of our RE families for their great compliance to these rather unprecedented directives, and for their patience throughout this time of great uncertainty. Because of this, we had to postpone Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The new dates will be provided as soon as we receive guidelines from the Archdiocese. Please know that we miss you all and we are praying for you and for an end to this pandemic!

As is the case everywhere, we have had to get used to doing things differently in an effort to continue the faith formation of our children while at home, something many call the “NEW NORMAL.” Religious Education lessons have been sent home to the parents electronically every Monday morning, who have in turn helped their children to complete them at their pace throughout the week. Thank you to the parents for stepping up to this role; and to the students for continuing to learn about God; even though we are not together in one building. Recorded Masses from our parish have also been shared with our RE families together with online prayer and worship resources from the Archdiocese of Chicago and elsewhere.

Looking Ahead!!! With the extended “Stay-at-Home” order through May 30th, the remainder of the Religious Education year will be completed online. RE Lessons will continue to be sent to families electronically and instructions on what needs to be done to conclude this year will be shared with them soon.

Plans for the new year of Religious Education 2020/2021 are underway; and information about this will be shared with the parents and our parish community in the coming days. Thank you and let us continue to join hands in prayer for an end to the Coronavirus in our world! Sr. Christine Nantaba, IHMR

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my Soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. Although you have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

First Fatima Apparition ~ May 13, 1917

On Sunday May 13, 1917, three children a ended Mass at the parish church in Fá ma, and then set out with their flocks. Lucia was now age 10, Francisco, nearly 9, and Jacinta 7. They decided to graze their flocks on land belonging to Lucia's family at Cova da Iria, near Aljustrel. They were tending their sheep when they were startled by a flash of light. Fearing a storm, they ran under a holm oak or carrasqueira. A second flash of light was even brighter, and frightened, they ran again, un l they suddenly stopped in amazement in front of a small evergreen called the azinheira. For there stood

the most beau ful Lady they had ever seen. In Lucia's own words, "she was a Lady dressed all in white, more brilliant than the sun, shedding rays of light clearer and stronger than a crystal glass filled with crystalline water and pierced by the burning rays of the sun." She held a Rosary in her right hand. "Do not be afraid. I will not harm you." They felt peaceful in her presence, and Lucia asked her where she was from. "I am from Heaven." The three children asked if they would also be going to Heaven one day, and she said yes, but with gentle reproach, Francisco would first have to say many rosaries. She asked them to return to the same spot on the same day for the next six months and then she would iden fy herself. She then asked them a difficult ques on: "Do you wish to offer yourselves to God to endure all the sufferings He may send you in repara on for sins and for the conversion of sinners?" With childlike faith they heroically said yes. "Then you will have much to suffer. But the grace of God will strengthen you and be your comfort." She then opened her hands and from her palms came two streams of light which in Lucia's words, "made us see ourselves in God more clearly in that light than in the best of mirrors." The children then prayed in her presence, and then she said, "Say the Rosary every day, to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war." She then glided towards the east and disappeared in the sunlight.

Archbishop Jose Gomez

US and Canada to be Consecrated to “Mary, Mother of the Church”

The announcement follows similar plans made by the bishops of Canada, who will consecrate the Crown Dominion to Mary under the same title on the same day. WASHINGTON, D.C—Archbishop Jose Gomez, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, invited all U.S. bishops to join him on May 1 in reconsecrating the U.S. to the Blessed Virgin Mary in response to the pandemic. The reconsecration is timed to coincide with the bishops of Canada consecrating their own country to Mary at the same time. Archbishop Gomez, who is the Archbishop of Los Angeles, said in a letter sent to all American bishops April 22, that the Marian reconsecration would be done under the title of “Mary, Mother of the Church.” He invited all the bishops of the country to join him in prayer on May 1 at 12 p.m. PDT, or 3 p.m. EDT. “Every year, the Church seeks the special intercession of the Mother of God during the month of May. This year, we seek the assistance of Our Lady all the more earnestly as we face together the effects of the global pandemic,” he said in his letter. The announcement follows similar plans made by the bishops of Canada, who will consecrate the Crown Dominion to Mary under the same title on the same day. “Based on discussion with the leadership of the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops, the Executive Committee of the USCCB met and affirmed the fitness of May 1, 2020, as an opportunity for the bishops of the United States to reconsecrate our nation to Our Lady and to do so under the title, Mary, Mother of the Church,” Gomez said, adding that they would be doing so “on the same day that our brother bishops to the north consecrate Canada under the same title.” Gomez said that the appropriate offices of the bishops' conference—the Secretariat for Divine Worship and the communications office—will provide liturgical direction and logistical information for the reconsecration. The bishops of Italy said on April 20 that they would consecrate their own country to Mary after receiving more than 300 letters requesting the consecration. The title “Mary, Mother of the Church” was given to the Blessed Mother by Pope St. Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council, and a memorial under the title was added to the Church’s liturgical calendar in 2018. Pope Francis declared that the Monday after Pentecost should be celebrated as the memorial of “Mary, Mother of the Church.” Cardinal Robert Sarah, head of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship, said that the addition of the memorial aimed to encourage growth in “genuine Marian piety.” Celebrating the memorial in 2018, Archbishop Gomez said that “when Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, Mary became the maternal heart of his Church.” Archbishop Gomez also said the May 1 reconsecration will be timely in asking for the intercession of Mary during the pandemic. There are more than 2.6 million confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world and almost 185,000 deaths due to the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center on Thursday morning. “This will give the Church the occasion to pray for Our Lady’s continued protection of the vulnerable, healing of the unwell, and wisdom for those who work to cure this terrible virus,” Gomez said. “In this Easter season we continue to journey with our Risen Lord that among the graces of this time may be healing and strength, especially for all who are burdened by the many effects of the COVID pandemic,” he said in his letter to bishops.

May 10 *FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER*

Today’s Gospel passage takes place at the Last Supper, when Jesus tells his disciples that he will be leaving them. No wonder he starts by reassuring them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1). But Thomas’s heart was troubled, for he thought that the way Jesus was going was unknowable. Jesus reassures him, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). There is no reason to be troubled; Jesus shows us the way. He is the way. He also guides us in truth, something a troubled Pilate never understood. Finally, he is the life. As he often explained to his disciples, they would find life in being willing to lose it, just as he soon would. In Jesus we have our path, our certaintly, our very being. We trust that he will guide us home. In fact, since Jesus is already in us, we are already home. As Peter says, we can be “a spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:5), welcoming those in need, as the disciples did in Jerusalem. Therefore, we celebrate Easter not just for a single day or even for just a season, but always. Every day, the risen Lord guides our way. How does Jesus guide your way? How can his presence within you lead you to accomplish great works? FIRST READING A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 6:1-7
