Fifth Sunday of Easter

A Mother’s Day Prayer Father, we give you thanks for the many gifts you have given us; the gift of life, the gift of those who love us.

We thank you today for the gift of our Mothers.

We give thanks for our Mothers who have died and for the unique way they have revealed for us your love.

We ask that you bless them and keep them in your care until the time comes for us to join them in your Kingdom.

We ask your Blessing upon the Mothers who are unable to be with us here today. May they know how much we love and care for them.

We pray for birth mothers who have loved their children so much they have shared the gift of their child with those who could better care for them and their needs, and give them a secure home.

And we pray for adoptive mothers, that they may always know their special role of being a true

mother, a revelation of God’s love for their children.

We ask your blessing upon Mothers who have lost children through stillbirth, crib death, accident and tragedy, war and violence that they may have your continuing strength and courage.

We ask your blessing too, upon those who would very much like to be mothers but who are having trouble having a child.

We ask your Blessing upon the Mothers gathered here today.

Give them the strength to live the faithful and loving lives you call them to live.

Protect and guide them. Keep them in your care.

We ask this through Christ our Lord

AMEN.

What’s Happening in Religious Education

Congratulations to the twenty one children who made their First Communion this past Saturday!

First Communion was a wonderful experience. I want to thank Samantha Pandolfi and Stephanie Shaw.

Thank you also to Elizabeth Famularo for enhancing our celebration with her gift of music.

I am also grateful to all of the parents who brought their children to receive our Lord in Blessed Sacrament. As I said at the end of Mass, that is a sign to me that you are doing a great job of raising your children. Thanks to

the children as well. They were terrific!

Father Shawn

Celebration of Baptism

Congratulations to the newest

member of the church who

was recently baptized here!

Hazel Lunetta Campbell

We pray for:

William (Bill) Hinchcliffe

And for the consolation of their family and friends. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; let

your perpetual light shine upon them.

This month, after years of study, two men are scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood. During their years of preparation for this vocation, they were supported by family and

friends - and by everyone who made a gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. When you make a gift to the Appeal, you help meet the cost of priestly formation and education. Please support our seminarians by making a gift to the Appeal today.

Daly Notes…

For those who missed the announcement last weekend, let me explain what is happening at Saint

Mary’s Church with the Pastoral Plan. After a lengthy and prayerful period of consultation,

discussion and research involving both clergy and lay leadership, a determination has been made

that Holy Spirit Church and Saint Mary Church will merge on June 29th. Masses and Sacraments

will continue to be celebrated at both churches. Each church building will retain the name with

which it was dedicated, but together we will form a new parish to be called Annunciation Parish.

In speaking to several parishioners last weekend, I realized that the merger of parishes is a

difficult concept for us to understand and accept. I believe that many of us think about parishes

that they know, that have been linked. Both of my assignments as pastor have been in service to

parishes that were combined together. I was pastor of two parishes in Meriden, and two parishes

in Wethersfield. These parishes worked together with each other, but each parish was a separate

entity from each other. Our merger will be very different. We will be one parish. Our new parish

will have one staff and one set of books.

This will take time for us to truly appreciate, but I am sure in time, we will embrace the new

reality. I am proud to be your pastor. Again, I ask that we all work together and remain open to

this process.

Thank you for all that you do for the Catholic Community of Newington.

THE LEGION OF MARY - WORLD-WIDE ORGANIZATION

Did you ever wonder after a homily, how am I serving God? Can I do more to spread God’s word

by my actions? Do I really see Christ in the people I meet? Many questions. The answers can be

found by committing to God through Mary. Frank Duff founded The Legion in Ireland. He formed

it to be a sign of Mary’s maternal love for the world, and a means of enlisting all her children in

the church’s evangelizing work. We strive to keep Catholics connected to the active parish, not

forgotten! Get involved and keep your Lenten resolutions active throughout the year. Saint Mary

Legion of Mary meets on Tuesdays at 12:00p.m.

Please call Carol @860-706-9072 for more information. WE NEED YOU!

A Note from Anthony Federico, Seminarian

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am so excited to be assigned to St. Mary's this summer. I met many of you last summer when I

visited and served Mass on several occasions. A few folks told me they would pray that I could

come back to the parish - it looks like prayer really works!

I just completed my fourth year of priestly formation (out of six) at the Theological College in

Washington DC. God willing, I will be ordained a deacon next May, and a priest in the summer of

2019. Since I am not (yet) a deacon or a priest, you can just call me Anthony. I had the pleasure

of spending this past year in the seminary with your very own Joe MacNeill.

Originally, I'm from New Haven, and I've lived in all the 'Havens' over the years. I worked as a

writer and editor at ESPN, and a consultant at a sports technology company before entering the

seminary. I still love to write, and recently completed my second novel. Some of my favorite

things are sausage and sweet onion pizza from Sally's on Wooster Street, and rooting for the New

York Yankees (sorry, Father Shawn!).

My hope for this summer is that together we can journey more deeply into the limitless love of our

Lord Jesus Christ.

CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN

May 20 - 21

Next week, our second collection is for the Catholic

Communication Campaign. This campaign connects

people with Christ, here and around the world in

developing countries, through the internet, television,

radio, and print media. Fifty percent of funds collected

remains in our diocese to fund local communications

efforts. Your support helps spread the gospel message!

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Our Lady of Fatima

May 13th is a very special day - it marks the 100th Anniversary of

the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima! In 1917, three children took their

flocks out to pasture in a small area known as the Cova da Iria in

Portugal. After lunch and the rosary, they suddenly saw a bright flash of

something like lightning, followed quickly by another flash in the clear

blue sky. They looked up to see, in Lucia’s words, “a lady, clothed in

white, brighter than the sun, radiating a light more clear and intense

than a crystal cup filled with sparkling water lit by burning sunlight.”

The children stood there amazed, bathed in the light that surrounded the

apparition, as the Lady smiled and said: “Do not be afraid, I will not harm

you. I have come to ask you to come here for six months on the 13th day of the month at this same

hour. Later I shall say who I am and what I desire. And I shall return here yet a seventh

time.” Lucia then asked if they would go to heaven and was told “Yes, she and Jacinta would go to

heaven, but Francisco would need to say many rosaries first.” The Lady then said: “Are you willing

to offer yourselves to God, and bear all the sufferings He wills to send you as an act of reparation for

the conversion of sinners?” Lucia, as spokesman for all three, readily agreed. “Then you are going

to have much to suffer, but the grace of God will be your comfort.” It was Our Lady’s desire that

people pray and sacrifice for peace throughout the world and for the conversion of

sinners. October 13th, 1917 became known as “the day the sun danced” due to a miracle from

Our Lady, which was given as proof in affirmation of the apparitions and her messages. The

miracle was that the sun danced, fluctuated in color, swirled, and descended towards the earth

leaving everything still and dry. Physical cures of the blind and the lame were reported.

To this day many of the faithful commit to attending Mass on five consecutive First

Saturdays of the month according to Our Lady’s request to Lucia, “See, my daughter, my Heart

encircled by thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and

ingratitude. Do you, at least, strive to console me? Tell them that I promise to assist at the hour of

death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, in order to make reparation to me, on

the First Saturday of five successive months, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say five

decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour, meditating on the fifteen

mysteries of the Rosary.”
