MARCH 18, 2018 FAITH ENRICHMENT 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT

Sunday, Mar 18, 2018-FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT;

THIRD SCRUTINY OF THE ELECT Yes, we can! Maybe it feels like something’s holding you back: lack of education or funds, past decisions or old wounds, complicated relationships or too many responsibilities. But in the big picture, only two things impede our liberty: sin and death. If we could get beyond those two, we walk into perfect freedom. The good news is, we can! In today’s Scrutiny, we celebrate how the “death-dealing” power of evil gives way to the “life-giving sacraments” that make it possible for us to walk free of every episode of death. What binds you? Jesus is calling you to freedom.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ezekiel 37:12-14; Romans 8:8-11; John

11:1-45. “O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise

from them.”

Monday, Mar 19, 2018-SOLEMNITY OF JOSEPH,

HUSBAND OF MARY Seek some fatherly advice Jesus taught his disciples to pray “Our Father . . . .” We are blessed in the name of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary, was a generous and strong father who always put the well-being of Mary and Jesus first. He stands as an inspiration for parents, and he points to the kind of parental love God has for us. He is also a powerful intercessor. Catholics call Saint Joseph the patron saint of the entire church. Pray to Joseph today in your own words for the wisdom and courage to care for the people and responsibilities in your charge.

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Samuel 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16; Romans 4:13,

16-18, 22; Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a or Luke 2:41-51a. “Did you

not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

Tuesday, Mar 20, 2018-LENTEN WEEKDAY Integrity is the best calling card There are countless guides on how to write the perfect résumé. Nearly all suggest that you include lots of credentials and personal referrals of influential people. After all, it’s who you know and what qualifications you bring to the table that matter, right? On the other hand, what would a prophet’s curriculum vitae look like? Here we are seeing a different kind of vita, where personal integrity carries the day. In the gospel the Pharisees want to see a traditional résumé of Jesus, but many people believed in Jesus based on the power of his witness. Listen carefully to what Jesus is saying and do your best to honor it in your own life.

TODAY'S READINGS: Numbers 21:4-9; John 8:21-30. “Because

he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.”

Wednesday, Mar 21, 2018-LENTEN WEEKDAY God’s got nothing to prove W. C. Fields used to exclaim in his films, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!” No doubt Fields enjoyed using these exotic biblical names as an expression, but behind them are three actual characters from Hebrew scripture. The Babylonian king had commanded them to worship the statue of a god or face immediate execution. Their response was an interesting one. Of course they wouldn’t bow down, and if God saved them, so be it. But if not, they still wouldn’t deny their God. Now that’s faith—both the willingness to give up their

lives but also their affirmation that God did not have to prove anything to deserve their trust. Faith does not begin with what God will do for you if you believe. It starts with believing because God is God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; John 8:31-42.

“Jesus then said to those . . . who believed in him, ‘If you remain

in my word, you will truly be my disciples.’ ”

Thursday, Mar 22, 2018-LENTEN WEEKDAY How well do you know God? “How well do you know me?” quizzes—with questions like, “What’s my favorite band/movie/song/video game? Where would I most like to be? Who are my heroes?”—have long been lighthearted ways to test or strengthen friendships. With Lent particularly set aside for repentance and renewal, it’s a good time to take a “how well do you know God” quiz. Ask yourself: Based on scripture and tradition, what do I know to be God’s likes and dislikes? Who are the people with whom God has found favor? Where am I likely to find God? Your search for answers will no doubt test and, let’s hope, strengthen your friendship with God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 17:3-9; John 8:51-59. “Jesus

answered, ‘ . . .You do not know him, but I know him.’”

Friday, Mar 23, 2018-MEMORIAL OF TURIBIUS OF

MOGROVEJO, BISHOP; DAY OF ABSTINENCE Timely advice “Turibius the Tireless” could be the nickname of today’s saint. As a Spanish missioner and later bishop in 16th-century colonial Peru, he traversed a 176,000-square-mile diocese—three times—to attend to those in his charge. His favorite saying is one we do well to keep in mind: “Time is not our own, and we must give a strict account of it.” Keep a simple time log for a week, and you’ll learn something about your priorities. You might be surprised by how much time is frittered away. Not that down-time is all bad, mind you—relaxing and recreating are also part of God’s plan. But keep in mind that time is a nonrenewable resource. How will you spend your precious allotment?

TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 20:10-13; John 10:31-42. “Many

there began to believe in him.”

Saturday, Mar 24, 2018-LENTEN WEEKDAY Be the voice of the voiceless Each year, on March 24, the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. This annual observance pays tribute to the memory of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who was martyred on this date in 1980. Archbishop Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador. “Each one of you has to be God’s microphone. Each one of you has to be a messenger, a prophet.” These fateful words of Romero speak of what it means to be a person of faith. Faith must be lived out. Romero preached the gospel by how he lived. His life broadcast the Good News, calling others to lives of holiness and humility. Your life can speak volumes, too; it’s simply a matter of letting God make of you a microphone.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ezekiel 37:21-28; John 11:45-56 (256).

“He prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation.”

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY-SPRING SESSIONS A WAY OF THE CROSS

FOR VICTIMS OF ABORTION

St. Michael Church

Memorial for The Unborn

Saturday—March 24, 2018

9AM (after the 8 AM Mass)

Please, WE must keep up the Momentum of Prayer

to save our Precious Babies!

WE MUST Also Encourage Women to Accept God's

Infinite Mercy and Forgiveness so they can move

from VICTIMS, to SURVIVORS. Who better can describe the shame, guilt, and pain they have lived with. These women can then stand in

strong solidarity and repentance and say as

ADVOCATES, PLEASE PROTECT AND SAVE

OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF PRECIOUS

BABIES. Please join us.

On the fourth Monday of every month, Fr. Ed offers

a Mass at 6 pm for the poor souls in purgatory. We

also have a rosary thirty minutes before these Masses

(at 5:30 pm) to remember these holy poor souls. All

are welcome to attend. Please continue to keep these

holy souls in your daily prayers.

DATECHANGE!

This month, due to Holy Week beginning on the 4th

Monday, and other obligations that Fr. Ed has the

Monday before, the Mass for the Souls in Purgatory

will be celebrated on Thursday, March 22, 2018. !

PURGATORY SOCIETY THIRD SCRUTINY

Our catechumens are excited about their impending

celebration of the Easter Sacraments at our Easter Vigil. Let

us keep them close to our hearts as they enter into final,

intense preparation for the sacraments.

Let us pray.

Good and forgiving God, The Easter Sacraments are drawing

near and your children who are

preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist confess

their faith in you.

Help them to strive against worldly

desires and rescue them from ignorance

of you.

Give us courage to walk with them as

they approach your altar for the first

time and receive you in the Sacrament

of the Eucharist.

Help us to be models of Christian life for them and welcome them to the Mystical Body of Christ.

We ask all this in your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Amen

MARCH 18, 2018 FAITH ENRICHMENT 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

"When I am in adoration, what matters is not my capacity to be lucid for an hour, but rather the fact that in accounting for life, I have chosen that all of myself should be His. I am not there with my head, nor with my senses, but I am there, and I am there, my God, because I have chosen to be there with you. Whether I succeed or do not succeed at this is your business. The important thing is that -- even if I lose my initial lucidity -- I must recall the days of my youth. The youth that we must recall before God is not our biological youth, but rather the youth of the "Yes" we said to God. To rejuvenate means to be always young before God." Antonino Grimaldi, La sfida del puro amore, Itinerario umano e

spirituale di Madre Mectilde de Bar (1614-1698) (Portalupe Editore, 2006, p. 131).

It is not for nothing that the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar of the Tridentine Missal begin with the words, Introibo ad altare Dei,

ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam, "I will go up to the altar of God, to God who makes glad my youth" (Ps 42:4).

Spiritually, we grow old and stiff-jointed when we forget the "Yes" that first brought us to the foot of the altar in adoration. The recovery of a youthful spirit -- not to be confused with an impulsive and immature spirit -- but of the freshness and wisdom of spiritual childhood is intrinsically related to the recovery of adoration.

Communities (and individuals) grown old, and stiff, and resistant to change, that is, to conversion, can recover their youth, their suppleness, and the élan of their initial "Yes" by exposing themselves to the glorious Body of Christ in Eucharistic adoration.

In response to Thy presence, O Lord,

I offer Thee my presence.

In response to Thy silence,

I offer Thee my silence.

In response to the gaze of Thy

Eucharistic Face,

I offer Thee my eyes.

In response to Thy Eucharistic Heart,

I offer Thee every heartbeat of mine.

In response to the mystery of Thy

Eucharistic poverty,

I offer Thee my poverty.

My one desire is to remain before Thee

even as Thou remainest before me

in this the Sacrament of Thy Love.

ROSARY LEADERS NEEDED!

MARCH 18, 2018 OUR PARISH SCHOOL 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT

Dear St. Michael Catholic School & Parish Families –

Welcome to the Fifth Sunday of Lent!

As I continue reflective readings in Matthew Kelley’s

book, Rediscover Jesus, I think about Holy Week and what

we have been preparing for all Lent long – the joyful

resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.

We look for complete joy in our lives, a joy that is lasting

and forever. The interesting thing is that God wants us to

have complete joy, and He created us for this.

But is your joy complete? If not, why? What is standing in

your way of the complete joy that Jesus wants for you?

How hard are you willing to work and what are you willing

to sacrifice in order to have that great joy? [p. 166].

Start by embracing and intentionally living the Gospel

more each day. Pay attention to the clarity you have about

what matters and what doesn’t. The Gospel is an invitation

to and a blueprint for that complete joy that God wants for

us.

Blessings,

school students living on their own without support from parents, either being left behind, living under bridges, in tents in the woods, moving from friends to friends’ homes? The Catholic Daughters #2356 and Knights of Columbus Council 8980 felt they needed to do something to help these students in our area. Working with guidance counselors there are now 2 programs set up for these students. Along with monetary donations, food gift cards i.e.: Subway, McDonalds, Burger King, personal care items are collected such as basic toiletries (full-size, not travel).

A VISIT OF A BELOVED SAINT

Two holy relics of Saint Anthony of Padua will visit the Diocese of

Charleston, South Carolina, from Friday, April 6 to Sunday, April 15.

Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone has invited Father Bortolino

Maistrello, a friar of the Basilica, to bring two holy

and precious relics of Saint Anthony of Padua to

his Charleston Diocese in South Carolina. The

relics will tour throughout the State and will touch

the following deaneries: Aiken, Beaufort,

Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach

and Rock Hill. During the tour dates, the Feast of

the Annunciation of Our Lord will be celebrated on

April 9, having been transferred from March 25.

Saint Anthony’s Relics Visit

St. Anthony Catholic Church

Monday, April 9th—Veneration from 9 am to 1 pm

The Franciscan Friars from Padua, Italy, invite you to join them in

welcoming Saint Anthony of Padua to St. Anthony Catholic Church.

St. Anthony will be visiting us in the form of “two precious and first

class” relics from the Pontifical Basilica in Padua, Italy.

The relics will be accompanied by Fr. Bortolino Maistrello, a

Franciscan Friar from Padua, Italy, where the Saint is buried.

According to Fr Mario Conte, who is Editor of the Messenger of St

Anthony, “There is nothing superstitious about relics. The real

meaning of a relic is love – they are a link of love between the person

who venerates and the saint.” St Anthony intercedes with those trying

to find a job, housing, faith, love, hope, harmony within the family,

good health, peace of mind and mercy.

Pope Emeritus Benedict said of relics “By inviting us to venerate the

mortal remains of the martyrs and saints, the Church does not forget

that, in the end, these are indeed just human bones, but they are bones

that belonged to individuals touched by the living power of God. The

relics of the saints are traces of that invisible but real presence which

sheds light upon the shadows of the world and reveals the Kingdom of

Heaven in our midst.”

Prayer petitions with holy cards will be distributed by Friar Bortolino

and volunteers to allow parishioners to write their prayer petition to

the saint. The writing of a prayer petition is a worldwide tradition

when venerating a relic of a saint. Father Bortolino will bring the

petitions back to the Basilica in Padua and place them at the tomb of

Saint Anthony. The tour officially ends back at the Tomb of Saint

Anthony where the Friars will gather to pray for the saint’s

intercession upon our intentions and petitions.

Charleston, please go to our church website: www.saintanthony.com

Ancient Order of Hibernians will be collecting cash donations

after each Mass on Saturday and Sunday, April 7, and

April 8, 2018 at the doors of the church. Through Project

Saint Patrick, The Ancient Order of Hibernians support

those entering religious life, including those in the seminary,

the convent and permanent deaconate. The funds collected in

Diocese of Charleston remain here for distribution.
