Dear students,
Welcome to St. Francis' College for Women, Begumpet , Hyderabad.
The college is one of the premier institutions in the country attracting student community fromall over the country and abroad. In this college you can virtually experience the world. Since it
began its journey in 1959 the college has been striving to empower women by providing allround quality education. The 'India Today Group' has ranked this college as the mostoutstanding college in the twin cities and among the first 25 colleges in India, in all the threestreams of Arts, Commerce and Sciences, in 2015 - 2016. The learning experience inSt. Francis' is indeed a unique one.
The courses and syllabi are regularly updated here keeping with the changing academicenvironment. This prepares our students to face the challenges in the future. This college is asocially sensitive and intellectually learning community where each and every student benefitsfrom this experience. Providing holistic quality education has been the main objective of thecollege. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) is responsible for ensuring that thecollege is on the right track. In pursuance of quality the college is assessed and guided by someexternal autonomous bodies.
The college has been assessed and accredited three times by the National Assessment andAccreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A' grade. The college also operates on the support,guidelines and directions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi, OsmaniaUniversity, Hyderabad and the Telengana State Council for Higher Education(TSCHE). In thisinstitution we believe that our society requires physically and mentally alert citizens, besidesbeing morally upright and socially committed. Therefore students have to participate in NCC/NSS / Sports. Value education is also a component of the education system here.

1.1. College Profile
College
St. Francis College for Women is a Catholic Minority Institution founded by the Sis-
ters of Charity of St. Bartholomea Capitanio and St. Vincenza Gerosa in 1959, for the
education of women.The Sisters of Charity came to India in 1860. St. Francis derives
its inspiration from the person and teachings of Jesus Christ, who is its norm, protec-
tor, and guide. As a minority institution it reserves for itself its inherent and consti-
tutional right (Art. 30[1]) with regard to management and administration. It is prima-
rily for Catholics but also admits students of other sections of society. The college
also admits students from SC/ST/BC categories despite being a minority institution.
St. Francis is an autonomous college, affiliated to Osmania University. It is one of the first autonomous
colleges in the twin cities to have completed 28 years of Autonomy in 2016 and the only college in
Telangana to be NAAC accredited (3rd cycle) with A Grade.
From a student strength of 15 in 1959, the college has grown into a prestigious institution with a student
strength of 3616 and a faculty comprising of 167 teaching and 103 non-teaching, offering Graduate and
Post Graduate, Diploma and Certificate Courses.
The College has 57 years of meaningful existence in the society with varied academic programmes inter
twined with Co-curricular activities, civic and social responsibility initiatives, cultural & aesthetic
promotion, physical fitness and Value education. The college has now adopted the UGC Choice BasedCredit System(2016).

AutonomySt. Francis has the distinction of being the first college in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad
to implement autonomy, which was conferred on the college by the University Grants Commission, through

2.2. Choice Based Credit System CBCS - 2016In keeping with the UGC Guidelines for higher education, the college has introduced CBCS from the year
2016 onwards.
Objectives
International academic compatibility to courses and credits offered.
Greater flexibility for the students in their choice and areas of study, through different electives.
Opportunities for advanced learners to earn extra credits.
Facilitation of institution-industry interaction.
CBCS introduces students to inter disciplinary & skill based courses.
The term Credit indicates differential weightage given to the course content and the number of hours of
study assigned to a subject. The term Choice refers to the students choice of a course of study and/or an
Open Elective. The proposed curriculum of all faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management &
B.Voc endeavors to empower students and help them in the pursuit for achieving overall excellence, both
in academics and research.
CBCS provides an opportunity for students to choose from the prescribed courses comprising core, elective,
foundation & Skill-based courses. The courses would be evaluated following the grading system.
Outlines of Choice Based Credit System:
1. Core Course: Papers designed under this category aim to cover the basics that a student is expected
to imbibe in that particular discipline.
2. Elective course: A course which can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very
specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline/subject of study.

a. Discipline Specific Elective (DSE): Elective courses offered under the main discipline/
subject of study is referred as Discipline Specific Elective.
b. Inter-Disciplinary Elective (IDE):The College/Institute may also offer discipline related
Elective courses of Inter- disciplinary nature (to be offered by main discipline/subject of
study), referred as Inter-disciplinary Elective (IDE).
c. Generic Elective (GE) or Open Elective (OE): An elective course chosen from an
unrelated discipline/subject with an intention to seek exposure beyond discipline/s of
choice is called Generic Elective or Open Elective.
3. Foundation courses or Ability Enhancement Courses:-
a. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) or Foundation-Generic:These
are mandatory for all disciplines. These are based upon the content that leads to knowledge
enhancement.

b. Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC):These are skill-based courses providing hands-on-
training, competencies, skills, etc. These courses are chosen from a pool of courses designed
to provide skill-based knowledge and contain theory and lab/hands-on/training/field work.
The main purpose of these courses is to provide students life-skills in hands-on mode so as
to increase their employability.
4. Practicals/Tutorials:Every Core and Discipline Specific/ Inter-disciplinary Elective has Practicalpapers/Tutorial papers.
5. Project work/ Dissertation:A special course involving application of knowledge in solving/
analyzing/exploring a real life situation/difficult problem.
6. As per the new UGC Guidelines, a student obtaining 24 credits in the concerned discipline at the
Under-graduate level is deemed sufficient to satisfy the admission requirement to M.A/M.Sc./
M.Com./ etc.
A student is required to have a minimum of 80% attendance in each paper in each Semester to be
eligible to write End Semester exams. However a condonation of 10% is allowed on medical grounds
on submission of Medical Certificate.

3. Courses Offered
3.1. Post Graduate Courses
The success of undergraduate courses under Autonomy encouraged the college to take up Post Graduate
Programme from 1995. The College was granted Autonomy for its PG Programme since 2010.
The college offers 7 Post Graduate programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce. The academic ambience
and study culture of the college have made the PG courses successful in terms of course credibility,
students achievements and employment for graduates.
3.1.1. M.Sc. Computer ScienceThe course was started in 1998. The course integrates seamlessly with the undergraduate course in computer
science and provides in-depth understanding of core and advanced topics in computer science.
Eligibility Criteria:
Graduation in the discipline of B.Sc. (with Computer Science & Mathematics) from any University,
recognized under University Act of India. Admission will be strictly based on the merit. The admitted
candidates have to go through an interview conducted by the respective department. Students awaiting
their final year undergraduate results may also apply.
3.1.2. M.Sc. Microbiology
The Masters Degree programme in Microbiology was started in July 2003 2004.
Eligibility Criteria:
Graduation in the disciplines B.Sc (life sciences) from any University, recognized under University Act of
India. Admission will be strictly based on the merit. The admitted candidates have to go through an
interview conducted by the respective department. Students awaiting their final year undergraduate results
may also apply.
3.1.3. M.Sc (Organic Chemistry)
A two year Masters Degree programme in Organic Chemistry is being offered from academic year 2011
12 to provide scientific support and trained personnel to the industry and to meet educational and research
needs in the field of Chemistry.

Eligibility Criteria:
B.Sc. Degree with Chemistry as one of the optional subject from any University under University Act of
India. Admission will be strictly based on merit. The admitted candidates have to go through an interview
conducted by the respective department. Students who are awaiting their final year undergraduate resultsmay also apply.
3.1.4. M.Sc. Mathematics
The Masters Degree Programme in mathematics was started in the year 2003. The programme offers M.Sc.
pure Mathematics with elective papers in applied mathematics and Computer Science.
Eligibility Criteria:
Graduation in the disciplines Maths B.Sc (with Mathematics and Honours ) from any University, recognised
under University Act of India. Admission will be strictly based on merit. Students who are awaiting their
final year undergraduate results may also apply. The admitted candidates have to go through an interview
conducted by the respective department. Loyola Academy Chemical Technology students are also eligible
to apply.
3.1.5. Master of Commerce (Applied Finance)
The Existing M.Sc Finance course has been revised and restructured as per the guidelines of
UGC and re named as M.Com (Applied Finance).
A post graduate course in commerce, M. Com (Applied Finance) programme offers students a rigorous
and intellectually sophisticated framework for application, analysis and decision-making in finance and its
related areas. The course equips students to be placed in finance agencies (national, international and
regulatory), not-for-profit organizations and any other organization where financial decision-making is
important. The course offers a unique perspective on finance, investment management and analytics.
Eligibility Criteria:
Students who are awaiting their final year undergraduate results can apply. Those who have qualified OUPG entrance examination are also eligible to apply. The ranks obtained at state-level and the national-level
management tests, i. e., CAT, MAT and ICET, PG Entrance exam will also be considered. Admitted
candidates must go through an interview conducted by the respective department

3.1.6. M.Sc. Applied Psychology
Masters in Applied Psychology is a comprehensive program began in 2012 which offers students a thorough
training in applying the principles and theories of psychology in the field of counseling and organisational
behaviour. The program has a twin-track structure, in the third and the fourth semesters, one offering aspecialization in Counseling Psychology and the other in Organisational Psychology.

University M.Sc. Psychology entrance examination are also eligible to apply. Emotional wellness and
Mental balance is another important criteria for the course.
3.1.7. M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication
St. Francis College for Women from the Academic year 2011 - 12 introduced a Two Year
(Four Semester) M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication. The focus of the course is to produce
competent and qualified media professionals who will be an asset to the media industry.

The department of Commerce was instituted in the year 1972 with a single course in B. Com. But after
receiving autonomy in 1988, it has introduced B. Com Professional in 1989, B. Com Vocational in FT in1995, which was restructured as B. Com International Business in 2011. B. Com, Computers was launched
in 2002 and B. Com IPP in 2012. After receiving PG autonomy in 2010, M.Sc Finance was introduced in

The CISCO Networking Academy program for CCNA is a comprehensive, e-learning program, which
provides students with the networking skills essential in a global economy. The program delivers webbased
content, on-line assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, and preparation for industry-
standard certifications. The Networking Academys CCNA program curriculum teaches students at
educational institutions networking skills including a broad range of topics from basics to building a
network and more complex concepts such as applying advanced troubleshooting tools. Combining instructor-
led, online education with hands-on laboratory exercises, the Networking Academy curriculum prepares
students for lifelong opportunities in the real world.
St. Francis College has joined hands with CISCO and UNV, the volunteer wing of the UN, as part of the
Gender initiative program to help increase female participation in the ever increasing and talent-hungry

CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course work is a cornerstone of the Network Academy

Photography as a form of expression since its inception has been a very powerful tool for documenting life

The American Business Experience certificate program is a 3 week programme offered by St. Ambrose
University, Davenport, USA

Retail and marketing strategies in the American automobile industry
The workshop will consist of approximately 50% classroom instruction and 50% field visits to area

3.6.2. American Corner (American Consulate)
The American Corner provides a window on life and culture in the United States and is the first place to
visit for accurate and up-to-date information about political, economic, cultural, educational and social
trends in the United States.
List of Facilities/Amenities provided by the American Corner:
1. The American Corner is Open Library, Research and Resource Centre. This will be an independent
academic resource centre with the branding of the U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad and U.S.
Embassy New Delhi along with our college.
2. The Corner will also aid in the establishment of a USIEF (The United States-India Educational
Foundation) which will aid the application of Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright Fellowships for
Indian students and teachers alike. Apart from that it will be a free resource for students who want
to apply to U.S. Educational Institutions for exchange programmes and further study.
3. All the guest speakers and cultural exchange programmes organized by the U.S. Consulate General
preferred venue status to the Institution. This involves getting eminent speakers from the U.S.
especially for the Institution.
4. The entire collection of the U.S. Library of Congress containing 25,00,000 volumes, journals and
books will be available in digital formats to the institution.

4. Examination System
St. Francis has devised an evaluation system that is based on continuous assessment and end semester
examination with a ratio of 40:60. For all PG courses also the ratio is 40:60. The continuous assessment
includes class tests, assignments, book reviews, seminars, group discussion, group presentations, laboratory
work, project work and attendance.

Continuous Assessment
Continuous Assessment test is compulsory and will be held on scheduled date of one hour duration.
In addition to the scheduled test it also includes continuous assessment by the subject lecturer
concerned.
A test for absentees will be conducted only for those candidates deputed by the college to participate
in Inter State / All India Sports / NCC / NSS activities.
Semester Examination
Eligibility
A student will be permitted to take the end semester examination in all subjects only if she has putin at least 80% of attendance per subject (Theory and practical separately).
On medical grounds a student is allowed a dispensation of 10% attendance on payment of anexemption fee of Rs. 100/- per subject, provided the student submits the medical certificateimmediately after the period of illness and signed by the concerned H.O.D. Medical certificatesubmitted later will not be accepted.
Students having less than 70% attendance in a subject will not be allowed to write the examinationfor the subject.
Students attending state/ national camps/ workshops etc., have to produce the attendance certificateduly signed by the Principal to be eligible for attendance, immediately after the camps.
Students should submit leave letter signed by the principal to help them promote to next semesterin case of medical issues.
End Semester Examination
All students are expected to report to the examination hall on time. Late comers will not be allowed into
the hall for 30 minutes after the stipulated time of commencement of examinations. The end semester
examinations of 2 hours duration evaluated out of 60 marks will be in the form of a comprehensive
written exam. External experts set the question papers and External examiners evaluate the answer scripts.
Model question papers will be provided to students and examiners.

To be awarded I / II division for an undergraduate examination a student is required to pass all papers
within the stipulated 6 semesters. However the year and month of passing for the exam is indicated against
each subject in the consolidated memo of marks. Students who fail to clear all the subjects will be considered
as supplementary candidates. No division will be awarded.
For PG the end semester examinations of 2 hours duration, evaluated out of 60 marks will be in the
form of a comprehensive written exam. External experts set the question papers and External examiners
evaluate the answer scripts. Model question papers will be provided to students and examiners. PGsupplementary Examinations will be conducted only in the Even Semester.
Declaration of Results
There is no minimum passing marks for internal Assessment test. The minimum mark for passingin a subject is 36% in the End Semester and 40% of marks in the aggregate of the Internal
Assessment and the End Semester. Those who secure less than the stipulated minimum will bedeclared failed.
If a student passes the end semester examination but fails to get the adequate aggregate of theInternal Assessment and the End Semester she should repeat the End Semester Examination.
The minimum mark for passing in a subject in PG is 40% in the End Semester and 40% of marksin the aggregate of the Internal Assessment and the End Semester.
The college has implemented Grading System for PG.
There is no provision for an Improvement Examination.
Note: Mark memos will be handed over to parents only.
Requirement for Promotion
No student is automatically eligible for promotion to the next semester. A student should have a minimum
of 50% attendance in all the subjects to be eligible for promotion to the next semester. A student must
earn a minimum of 20 credits (in academics) in one academic year to be eligible for promotion to the next
year. However in the case of B.Voc courses, the student must earn a minimum of 30 credits to be eligible
for promotion. She will be eligible for the award of a degree if she has passed in all the subjects and has
secured the minimum of credits specified for the course over the six semesters.

Appeals Regarding Internal Assessment
Any student who has a grievance regarding internal assessment may bring it to the notice of the lecturer
concerned within one week after the receipt of the answer script. If she still feels dissatisfied, the mattercan be presented to the head of the department. After that she may appeal to the Principal who will set up
a committee consisting of two external lectures, the Controller of Examinations and the Head of the
department. The decision of the committee will be final.
Representation Regarding Semester Examination Results
a. Such representations must be made to the Principal in writing within 10 days after the publication
of results.
b. In case of dissatisfaction with end semester examination results a student can ask the controller of
examination in writing for revaluation on payment of the prescribed fee.
The following procedure will be followed in revaluation.
If the difference is less than 10% of the maximum marks of the paper answered between theoriginal and revalued marks, the former will stand.
If the difference is 10% or more of the maximum marks of the paper answered the latter will begiven
No revaluation for PG
Supplementary Examination
Failed students at UG level can take the supplementary examination in every semester. Supplementary
Examination should not be taken more than three times for a subject under the same syllabus. After that
the students will have to repeat the examination under the revised syllabus.
Malpractice
A student is guilty of malpractice if she is found attempting to copy, copying or in possession of incriminating
material. A committee comprising the Principal, Controller of Examinations, Head of Department and
the concerned Invigilator will investigate cases of malpractice in internal assessment tests. A student
found guilty by the committee will be awarded zero marks in that subject only. The same committee will
investigate cases of malpractice in the End Semester Examination. A student found guilty will have all
subsequent papers of the semester cancelled and the committee will decide further course of action.

Located in the heart of the city at Begumpet St. Francis College for Women has a sprawling campus area

AuditoriumThe college has an auditorium with a seating capacity of 800 in an area of 20,000 sq ft. An impressivestage with its state of the art acoustics, attached green rooms and other accessories contribute to the

The college has a 100 person capacity fully air-conditioned board room with state of the art equipment tocater for the various meeting requirements.
The college has over 75 spacious lecture halls that are well lit airy and well furnished. Each classroom is
fitted with a public address system, an effective means of communicating information. The college has
provided for 4 large conference halls, wherein seminars, extension lectures and workshops are often
conducted. The college also has 55 rooms equipped with audio-video facilities, LCD projection screens

LibraryThe Library services are fully computerized with updated software SLIM 21 and has a collection of
60,000 and above books. Access to E-journals from J-Gate-Informatics is provided. It also subscribes to
more than 100 Journals / Magazines. The library is kept open for 290 days in an academic year and works
between 8:30 am to 4 pm.
LaboratoriesWell-equipped laboratories are spread out on the ground and first floors of both the buildings. A new
laboratory is designed exclusively for Internet Access with 26 systems and provides broadband connectivity.
Staff and students can access any information they want over the Internet thus extending the boundariesof learning from the classroom to the time and place of their choice.
Area for eXperimental Inquiry into Science (AXIS)
To expand campus research facilities for staff and students, the college has set up St. Francis Research
Resource Center AXIS (Area for eXperimental Inquiry into Science) with a coordinator for research in

Commerce Lab
There has been a phenomenal increase in the number of enrolments in the Commerce stream in the recent
past. The basic idea behind establishing a Commerce lab is to strengthen the conceptual base. Showing the
vouchers to the students, explaining the concepts with living examples, introducing the students to theannual reports of the companies are some of the modes adopted in this regard. The concept is perceived
to be useful by the students and the faculty.
English Language Lab
The Language Lab with 40 systems acts as a platform for learning, practicing and producing language skills
through interactive lessons and communicative mode of teaching. In this session the emphasis is on English
language learning through the usage of emerging technology in language labs. Lessons and exercises are
recorded on a weekly basis so that students are exposed to a variety of listening and speaking drills. It
addresses the concepts of grammar, lexicon, phonetics and accent.
UG / PG - Psychology Laboratory
The Department of Psychology approaches psychology as an experimental science and believes that the
boundaries of psychology are constantly expanding. Since the inception in the year 1973, the number of
apparatus, tests and inventories has steadily increased. The experiments conducted in learning, memory,
thinking and other aspects of cognition, conation and affect spark excitement and debate in the minds of
the students. The Laboratories are well equipped with variousprojective and non-projective tests used in the
field of Psychological Testing.
The Department has now started a state of the art Counseling Laboratory, for the M.Sc in Applied
Psychology students. The Counseling lab with a simulation roomand four individual counseling rooms
for counseling skills training and supervised counseling is one of its kind in the twin cities of Secunderabad
& Hyderabad. The subject knowledge gained through classroom teaching, psychological testing and practical
exposure through various forms of field work gives immense training in handling clients.
Mass Communication Studio
The college is fully equipped with audio / video teaching aids and a Mass Communication Lab cum studio.
The Department of Mass Communication housed in the Sister Maria Franco Multimedia Centre, has an
LCD projector enabled classrooms with a public announcement system. The studio has a state of the art
sound proof Television Production Lab with 4 DVCAM PD-177 Video Cameras and 16 Canon Digital
SLR Still Cameras, to complete the setup. The studio also comprises 8 Avid Media Composer Production
Suites, a Mackie Audio Mixer Adobe Premier PRO and Collection -13, FCP 4 licensed versions, IMAC
systems -4, Quarkxpress- 4, Canon Mark 3-camera online video setup and a full-fledged online radio setup

This scheme aims to provide education to girls who are economically backward and first generationlearners from rural background irrespective of their caste or creed.
A team of dedicated experts would visit the rural areas and with the help of the local educationalists
identify girl students who have an aptitude for learning but are denied due to a number of constraints.An informal interview would be conducted to adjudge the aptitude of the student, her interestsand her career aspirations. Based on the above exercise, every year three girl students will be admittedinto the 3 year degree programme of B.A, B.Sc. and B.Com..
This programme will take care of the Financial, Academic and the Social needs of the students. The students
will be provided for food& accommodation (36,000 per year) tuition fees (10,000 per year), and books and
other requirements of a regular student of the college. The above mentioned need would require a minimum
corpus fund of Rs. 7 lakhs per student which could generate an annual income of Rs. 70,000 annually.
The academic support will be given by the staff who will volunteer to take over as an Academic Counselor and
Guardian, providing the necessary direction and guidance to the students.
The student would be provided the benefit of extra tutorials, courses to develop soft skills andother avenues for the overall personality development
Utmost care will be taken to enable them to adjust to the environment and successfully completetheir graduation.
