SUMMARY 1. The poem tells us that:

a) we rush through life and have no time for

leisure.

b) we are too busy with our worries and

responsibility so we have no time to enjoy the

beauty of nature.

c) observing the beauty of nature is a good thing.

d) we have no time to see simple things in nature

like the animals, plants and rainbows.

What it means (maksud) by ‘full of care’?

It means our life is full of worries and

responsibility.

We have no time to stand and stare.

nature around us.

COUPLET 2 No time to stand beneath the boughs Busy people do not have time to stand under

the trees

The word ‘boughs’ refer to branches of trees

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

Just like sheep and cows which graze in the

fields. They just stand and stare at their

surroundings.

They are grazing.

COUPLET 3 No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

Busy people do not see squirrels hide their

nuts in grass when they pass through the

forests.

What does the word ‘wood’ refer to?

The woods refer to the forest or the jungle.

What do squirrels feed on?

Nuts.

Where do squirrels hide their nuts?

They hide their nuts in grass.

Why do you think the streams look like stars at

Because the water catches the sunlight and

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

Busy people do not have time to admire the

changes (movement) of nature. When a

woman glance or dance, she will move parts of

her body. When nature changes, it is like a

beautiful dancer.

People are too busy to admire the changes of

nature.

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

Busy people do not have time to watch the

changes in nature. When nature changes, it is

like a woman’s smile that starts from the eyes

and spreads slowly to the mouth.

Stanza One

Grand dad did you breathe

before air cons were invented

In this verse, the grandchild is talking to the

grandparents.

The child asks the grandfather how he was able to

live during his time without modern inventions

like the air conditioner.

was it hard staying

alive without modern inventions?

The child is puzzled how it must have been very

difficult to live without modern things.

Grandma weren’t you flustered

as you fluttered with paper fans?

The child also asks her grandmother if she felt

tired with fanning herself to keep herself cool.

Flustered = irritated / annoyed / frustrated

Fluttered = fanned

Could you communicate before

faxes and long distance calls

became basic necessities?

The grandchild then goes on to wonder how they

communicated without modern gadgets like faxes

and telephones, which are now basic necessities.

Stanza Two

Grandchild we lived

before your age. Because

In the second stanza, the grandparents respond to

the grandchild’s questions.

The grandparents tell the child that they lived

before he/she was born.

of our ignorance,

we did not know

pollution, stress, traffic jams

destruction of forests, streams and hills

The grandparents say that by having not much

knowledge, they lived without pollution, stress,

traffic jams, deforestation and destruction of

streams or river.

The grandparents also emphasize that during

their time, they fear God and Nature.

They lived in harmony with Nature and took care

of it.

In present day, modern man no longer shares the

same respect for nature and is slowly destroying

the environment.

Some human beings have lost their traditional

values and money has now become their greatest

love.

new God” in the second stanza?

Because money is important / Because money can

who did them. So, we say, “Mr Nobody did it!”.

4. Mr Nobody is an imaginary person who is strange

and quiet.
