National HistoryZ E TA P H I B E TA S O R O R I T Y, I N C .

The year 1920 was the star t of the decade shor t ly af ter Wor ld War I and a t ime of great prosper i t y for the countr y. Women are cal led dames, dol ls , or the cat ’s meow. At the beginning of the decade, women st i l l wore long sk i r ts but the “Roar ing 20’s” brought a new look of shor t sk i r ts and smar t ly coi f fed shor ter hair. I t was within this environment that Zeta Phi Beta Soror i t y was founded.

Zeta Phi Beta Soror i t y was founded on the s imple bel ief that soror i t y e l i t i sm and socia l iz ing should not overshadow the real miss ion for progress ive organizat ions - to address societa l mores, i l l s , prejudices, pover t y, and health concerns of the day. Founded Januar y 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by f ive coeds at Howard Univers i t y in Washington, D.C. ; Ar izona Cleaver, M yr t le Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pett ie, and Pear l Neal . These f ive women, a lso k nown as our Five Pear ls , dared to depar t f rom the t radit ional coal i t ions for black women and sought to establ ish a new organizat ion predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Ser vice, S isterhood, and Finer Womanhood. I t was the ideal of the Founders that the Soror i t y would reach col lege women in a l l par ts

of the countr y who were soror i t y minded and desi red to fo l low the pr inciples of the organizat ion. Founder Viola Tyler was of ten quoted to say, “ [ I n the ideal col legiate s i tuat ion] there is a Zeta in a gi r l regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and pr inciples, a good scholar ly average, and an interest in a l l th ings that she under takes to accompl ish .”

Zeta’s internat ional , nat ional and local , programs include endowment of i ts Nat ional Educat ional Foundat ion, communit y outreach ser v ices and suppor t of mult iple af f i l iate organizat ions. Zeta chapters and auxi l iar y groups have given untotaled hours of voluntar y ser v ice to educate the publ ic , ass ist youth, provide scholarships, suppor t organized char i t ies, and promote legis lat ion for socia l and c iv ic change through Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping O ther People Excel ) .

O ver the years s ince the soror i t y ’s incept ion, Zeta Phi Beta has char tered hundreds of chapters and int iated thousands of women around the wor ld. Zeta has cont inued to thr ive and f lour ish whi le adapt ing to the ever- changing needs of the wor ld. Despite the change in t ime, Zeta has cont inued to hold t rue to i ts ideals and purpose.
