Fire Code of the Month

Fire extinguishers are one of the most readily recognized results of the fire prevention code enforcement.

In 1723, the first fire extinguisher patent was filed. This extinguisher utilized explosives to distribute a chemical agent onto the fire.

Between 1810 and 1818, the first portable fire extinguisher was patented. This portable extinguisher utilized water and bicarbonate soda ash to pressurize the vessel and deliver the water to an application nozzle.

This method of pressurized vessels remains the same today. However, fire specific extinguishers are utilized based upon the materials burning.

NFPA 10 outlines specific requirements business and property owners must comply with.

Specifically, they are;

- Extinguishers must be visible and accessible to the public. - Must be serviced and tested annually; or replaced annually.- They must be appropriate for the hazard (proper class).- Must be present on every floor and every 75’ of travel (150’ in sprinkler equipped buildings).- Additional extinguishers may be required in high hazard areas (i.e. kitchens), in addition to the

above.

Department & Community EventsSafety Town 2021 / Geneva Lake Women’s Association – Held from June 8th through June 11th at the Lake Geneva Middle School, Safety Town is an early childhood safety education program offered to children who are at least 5 years old and who are entering five-year-old kindergarten. Children learn safety behaviors through role playing, games, art projects, stories, movies and field trips. The Fire Department hosted the various groups of children in a short classroom presentation and a tour of the station. Thanks to all the special, talented leaders of this program for their dedication to safety of the children of our community.

- June 12th was definitely not a dull day! The Duty Crew was dispatched to Wells Street to assist a mother duck and her chicks. Yes, as the family was crossing the street, the chicks fell into a storm sewer through the grate. The crew jumped into action (along with some bystanders). Mother duck and her chicks are doing fine – no transport necessary.

Recently, a local business owner purchased a property in the city and offered it to the Fire Department for training purposes. We graciously accepted and because training is such a major focus for our department, we fully capitalized on the many training opportunities this generous offer presented.

Two of our firefighters are engagedin the opportunity to enhance their Ventilation Operations is another areaskills in search and rescue, along that we continuously train on. Despite with advancing hose lines. the heat of the season, we are dedicated,

passionate and driven to protect ourcommunity.

Notable Calls for Service- June 6th @ 5:17 p.m., the Department was dispatched to a MABAS alarm in the Town of Burlington for a

residential structure fire. The department responded with a ladder truck and personnel. Crews remained on scene for hours assisting with the fire due to its size and complexity.

On June 16th at 7:14 p.m., the department was notified of a possible structure fire on the south shore of Lake Como. Automatic aid was dispatched from the Town of Linn and the Elkhorn Fire Department. The first arriving engine reported a working fire and began suppression efforts. Arriving automatic aid companies established a water supply relay due to this being a non-hydrant area. The fire was located in a garage under a dwelling unit and was quickly extinguished by the first engine company. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries to citizens or fire personnel reported and fire damage was limited to the garage.

- On June 17th @ 10:46 a.m., the Department was dispatched to an outdoor fire on Krueger Rd. Upon arrival, the Engine Company found railroad ties smoldering. The fire was quickly distinguished and the remaining railroad ties were cooled. Aid was provided by the Elkhorn area Fire Department.

- June 19th @ 2:49 a.m., the Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, we found a single vehicle accident. The vehicle was noted to be smoking; a water can was used to distinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.

- On June 20th, the Department was dispatched to the Town of Linn for an ALS intercept cardiac arrest. The patient was resuscitated in the field and transported to Mercy General Hospital for further care. Crew: Capt. Detkowski, FF/Paramedic Pillman
