Fire protective coatingfor electrical cablesand penetration seals
KBS® Coating
General Information
KBS® Coating is a water-based, ablative fi re protective coating, especially developed for the fi re protection of grouped or bundled electrical cables and for penetration seals.
The main function of KBS® Coating is to prevent fl ame propa-gation along vertical and horizontal cable ways. KBS® Coating will also delay short circuit, whereby circuit integrity depends on the distance of the cables from fi re and the incurred temperature. KBS® Coating is easily applied by conventional methods such as spray and brush, as well as by hand (see application data). KBS® Coating is also available free of halogens – named KBS® Coating CLF.
KBS® Coating has been tested to all recognized international standards and is used worldwide, from the arctic circle to the tropics. Its effectiveness has been proven in several documented cases of actual fi res. KBS® Coating is produced only by BASF in Illertissen where a quality system fulfi lling the requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001 has been in place for more than a decade.
KBS® Coating is also an integral part of the cable penetration seal KBS® Panel Seal ABL. Here it is used as a coating for the mineral wool panels, the sealing of the penetrating cables and other utilities. For use of KBS® Coating in the installation of KBS® Panel Seal ABL please refer to our separate brochure.
How does an ablative coating work?
KBS® Coating protects electrical cables through ablation as opposed to intumescence. Energy is consumed or generated to change any material from one condition or state to another.
Processes consuming energy are called “endothermic”. Some materials need large amounts of energy to decompose or “break down”. A good ablative composition requires a maximum of ener-gy to decompose. KBS® Coating when exposed to fi re starts to ablate by chemical and physical reactions, for instance evaporati-on, chemical cracking, melting - all this is consuming energy (heat) while keeping the cable relatively cool (for a certain space of time, as the process is self-sacrifi cial).
The gases and vapours generated during the ablative process push oxygen away from the surface, dilute fl ammable gases preventing them from burning and interrupt the ”chain reaction” of fi re chemically. After decomposition of all organic components, a solid structure of inorganic components remains offering further protection by insulation.
KBS® Coating...... lasts for the lifetime of cables... does not derate electrical cables... is totally weather and water resistant
KBS® Coatingprevents fl ame propagation along cable ways
Special FeaturesFire protection
KBS® Coating prevents flame propagation on cables, thus keeping a cable fire localized to its source, where, however, some minor damage to the most exposed cables must be accepted.
According to bibliographical references, a fire on vertical cable ways can spread 20 m per minute. Flame spread on KBS®-coa-ted vertical cables in the 40-minute IEC 60332-3 test has been restricted to less then 10 cm (see list of international test results).
KBS® Coating has an LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index) value of 100.
What is an LOI value of 100 ?The Limiting Oxygen Index value test, in accordance with ASTM D 2863, determines the percentage of oxygen in a nitrogen/oxygen mixture at which a material sustains burning on its own. In this test, which determines the burning characteristics of all plastic materials, the sample is secured in a glass cylinder – containing a definite gas flow of O2/N2 mixture – and ignited with a gas flame. Then the gas flame is removed and the sample is observed for continued burning. Soft PVC, as used for cable jackets, continu-es to burn at a low 25 – 30% oxygen content. Teflon, however, sustains burning only at a high 90 - 95% oxygen content.
KBS® Coating has an LOI of 100, which means, it does not even burn in a 100% oxygen environment.
AmpacityKBS® Coating does not affect the current carrying capacity of electrical cables. The FM test states “no derating required” (see list on page 5).
Why no derating when cables are coated with KBS® Coating?KBS® Coating protects electrical cables through ablation and not through insulation. It is dense and thermally conductive during normal cable operating temperatures. Its thermal conductivity is better than that of PVC. The coating increases the circumference (= surface) of the cable or cable bundle. The surficial area is further enlarged by the roughness of the coat (radiator effect). This exten-ded surface allows more heat to dissipate. The cable temperature, therefore, does not increase.
Prevention of poisonous and corrosive gases and smokeBy preventing the fire from spreading and eventually involving all cables, KBS® Coating also prevents the development of the dreaded HCl (hydrochloric acid) from PVC cables as well as the dense black smoke and poisonous gases developing from all types of cables.
Mechanical resistanceKBS® Coating is tough enough to sustain physical abuse such as walking on coated cable trays.
Human health compatibilityKBS® Coating is in no way affecting the human health system, it is non-toxic, solvent-free, phosphate-free and does not contain asbestos or any other substance identified as being cancerogenic. KBS® Coating is practically odourless and does not affect the human skin.
Weather and water resistanceKBS® Coating is permanent protection under all weather and climatic conditions. A 30 years outdoor test, documented by the Institute for Fire Protection of TU Brunswick/Germany, found KBS® Coating still performing the same as freshly produced material. Here cables had been exposed from highest summer heat to snow and ice in winter, part of their length being constantly immersed in water.
Chemical compatibilityKBS® Coating has been tested for compatibility with close to 90 chemicals and has been found to be unaffected by those most frequently found in industrial installations such as Diesel fuel, ethy-lene glycol, fuel oil, lubricating oil, turbine oil and many others.
FlexibilityKBS® Coating is highly flexible (see technical data).
Endurance / lifetimeKBS® Coating lasts for the lifetime of cables.
KBS® Coatinglasts for thelifetime of cables
Application on cables
Surface preparationExtensive cleaning of cables is not required. However, oil or grea-se should be taken up with dry rags (no solvent). Using a broom or vacuum cleaner to remove heavy layers of dust is sufficient.
Spray ApplicationThis is performed in the conventional way by spraying crosswise. On all exposed surfaces the wet thickness of the coating must be at least 2.5 mm. The use of an extension nozzle is recom-mended when full coating is required in areas with limited acces-sibility. If cables are situated close to a wall, the cavity between cables and wall is stuffed with mineral wool and then coated over. Usually the required thickness may be applied in one coat. However, if new vertically mounted cables are to be coated, it is recommended that a thin “fog-coat” should be applied first, let dry and the final coat be applied thereafter.
Application by HandSingle large diameter cables or bundles may be coated by hand. Again, a thin coat should be allowed to dry before the rest is applied, using both hands (wear rubber gloves) like an extruder. To achieve a smooth, even finish, use a wet brush.
Recommended coating thickness on cables:Wet approx. 2.5 mm – resulting in approx. 1.6 mm dry coating
Coverage at recommended thickness:Approx. 3.0 kg/m2 for level surface. For grouped cables or cables in trays allow 30% more material considering the curved surfaces.

Single and doublepanel penetration sealsfor cables
KBS® Panel Seal ABL
General Information
The KBS® Panel Seal ABL consists of mineral wool panels coated with KBS® Coating, KBS® Sealant to fill gaps and KBS® Coating to coat the penetrating cables and support systems.
Only the visible sides of the panels and penetrating items have to be coated with KBS® Coating.
KBS® Panel Seal ABL can be installed as a single or double panel seal, depending on the required fire resistance time.
KBS® Coating is a water-based ablative fire protective coating, KBS® Sealant is a water-based ablative fire protective putty. KBS® Coating is suitable for penetration seals and fire protection of cables or other utilities.
Both products last for the lifetime of cables. KBS® Coating is highly flexible, totally weather- and water-resistant, and compatible with various chemicals.
Any mineral wool panels with a minimum density of 150 kg/m3
and a melting point above 1000°C can be used for KBS® Panel Seal ABL. If not available on the local market, they can be sup-plied by our distributor.
KBS® Coating and KBS® Sealant are produced only by BASF in Illertissen maintaining a quality system which fulfils the require-ments of DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 14001.
KBS® Panel Seal ABL is used to seal any size of opening in walls and floors
Technical Information
The KBS® Panel Seal ABL is used to seal any size of opening in walls and floors, providing a fire- and smoke- tight seal around all penetrating utilities such as cables, cable supports, pipes and ducts.KBS® Panel Seals ABL have been tested and approved world-wide and have received various ratings depending on type and national standard. (Please see list of international test reports/ap-provals on back page). Please note the following results:
Single Panel Seal (panel thickness 50-60 mm): Rated up to 120 min.
Double Panel Seal:Rated up to 180 min.
Panels are usually coated with KBS® Coating at a coverage of approx. 2.0 kg/m2 on the exposed (visible) side only, resulting in approx. 1.3 mm dry thickness. This means the same amount of coating is used per opening, independent whether it is a single or double panel seal. Panels may be precoated or coated on site by spray or brush. Precoated panels are also available from our distributor. The double panel seal usually is constructed with an air space between the two panels. Preferably the panels are installed flush with the outside of the wall. Cables and other penetrating items are coated with KBS® Coa-ting at a coverage rate of approx. 3.0 kg/m2, corresponding to approx. 1.6 mm dry thickness.
In all KBS® Panel Seals ABL, it is required that only the exposed (visible) penetrating items (cables, support systems, pipes, etc.) must be coated with KBS® Coating for a distance away from the seal. This distance is specified in national tests and differs from country to country according to respective requirements.
Retrofitting of additional utilities is achieved with ease in a KBS® Panel Seal ABL. The opening for the penetrating item is cut as accurately as possible with a pointed saw or a saw-tooth knife and sealed after installation of the utilities with KBS® Sealant. Where the opening has been cut larger than the penetrating item, loose mineral wool should be stuffed tightly in the remaining space before applying KBS® Sealant.
1. 5.2. 6.3. 7.4. 8.
Measure exact location on cables and cable supports, using a meter stick, a mason’s compass or a piece of string with which you can locate cables by measuring from the corners.
Transfer measurements onto mineral wool panel, but add about 3 mm on height and width of panel cut (this will result in a tighter fit). Now cut panel into as many pieces as necessary to fit in the opening.
Check cut by placing the panel pieces into the opening and make necessary correc-tions.
Apply KBS® Coating to the edges of the panels as well as to the insides of the opening where panels will be fitted. Prior to coating application all areas to be coated have to be cleared of dust, additionally the surface of the building section should be wetted with water.
After panel is in place, check carefully for possible openings, stuffing them with loose mineral wool. Apply KBS® Coating or KBS® Sealant covering carefully spots stuffed with loose wool, also use KBS® Coating or KBS® Sealant liberally between cables and other spots which may allow leakage of fumes and smoke.
Use masking tape to keep cables and surrounding area on wall or ceiling clean.
Now apply KBS® Coating by spray or brush, first to panels, then to cables and support systems to distance required by national tests. Coat wall about 2 cm over edge of opening.
Attention: If walking on a floor penetration is not possible to prevent this, use any suitable cover.
Place one edge of panel first in the opening completely and push it slowly into opening. Since the panel has been cut oversize, a piece of wood and a hammer will be necessary to get panel in place. If panel is loose in the opening, it should be discarded and replaced by a new one.

HOW INTUMESCENTS WORK
• Intumescent coatings swell to form a layer of char foam in case of fire or heat (250-300oC)
• The foam layer protects the substrate from heat transfer for a period of time (eg. 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes)
• Package usually consists of anti-corrosive primer, intumescent paint and top coat
DETERMINING THE FIRE RATING
• Australia has a performance based system which means that the fire risk needs to be calculated for each of the structures
• This risk determines the fire rating
• Example: a warehouse may only require a 30 minute fire rating whilst a hospital may require 120 minute fire rating
• There can be different ratings in different areas of the building
• The building designer determines the fire risk of the structure
