A COMPREHENSIVE SUITE OF FIRE RATED PRODUCTS

At Bostik, we understand that meeting fire safety standards is essential to all areas of industry. We strive to uphold the highest levels of fire safety through our cutting-edge sealant technologies.

Our fireproofing solutions are ideal for commercial applications, possessing fire resistant properties with exceptional longevity.

Our intumescent sealants are perfectly formulated for the purpose of high quality fire-retardancy in accordance with Australian standards. When subjected to high heat, our smart sealants swell in order to support in the filling of potentially hazardous voids and gaps. This forms an insulating char that helps to prevent the permeation of smoke and flame, enabling your installation to withstand extreme temperatures for up to four hours under certain conditions while maintaining structural integrity.

Bostik fireproofing sealants are suitable for all forms of ventilation, piping, expansion and construction joints, and can bond to an impressive range of substrates – from wood, metal and glass to masonry, concrete and timber. We introduce to you the Bostik range of fire sealants and foam products.

Fireban OneDescriptionBostik Fireban® One is a fire rated, intumescent, low modulus, one component, and Class A polyurethane sealant. When cured it will form a tough, flexible fire rated seal capable of cyclic expansion and compression movement of 50% (± 25%) of the original installed joint width.

Bostik Fireban One is resistant to normal weathering conditions such as rain, sunlight, snow, sleet, ozone, atmospheric contamination and pollution. Its excellent weatherbility enables it to retain its original properties after years of exposure, refer to the CSIRO RILEM LONG-TERM SEALANT DURABILITY STUDY DBCE Doc.97/196(M).

Application InstructionsSubstrate PreparationClean and dry all surfaces by removing foreign matter and contaminants such as laitance, oil, dust, grease, frost, water, dirt, old sealants, curing agents and any protective coating. Dust and loose particles should be vacuum cleaned. Priming of all surfaces is recommended to achieve stated performance properties. DO NOT USE METHYLATED SPIRITS OR TURPS

PRIMINGPorous Substrate• Absorbent or porous substrates will allow a

bead of water to easily soak into and wet out the surface of the substrate.

• For maximum performance on porous surfaces and in all periodically immersed and submerged applications, use Bostik N49 Primer, or one coat of Bostik Ultraseal

• Porous substrates not subject to immersion or ponded water, e.g. vertical expansion joints in external concrete or masonry structures or internal acoustic plasterboard applications, do not require priming if clean, dry and uncontaminated

• Autoclaved aerated substrate e.g. Hebel, require 1 to 2 coats of N49 primer or 2 coats of Moisture Seal to consolidate the substrate prior to sealant application

Non Porous Substrates• Non-absorbent substrates will cause a bead

of water to be retained on the surface of the substrate as a raised droplet. The droplet does not easily soak into the surface of the substrate

• Bostik Ultraseal is recommended for non-porous or burnished/overworked concrete substrate as per Bostik Ultraseal Technical Data Sheet

• Bostik N40 Primer is recommended for non-porous plastic and metal substrates

• Prime all plastics and metallic non-porous substrates with Bostik N40 Primer using the two-cloth method described below

• E.g UPVC outlets and pipe work: brass, copper fittings, stainless steel trays and flashings

Two Cloth Method - N40 Primer Application• Dampen a clean and dry cloth with Bostik N40

Primer and spread evenly over the non-porous substrate using a cleaning/rubbing action

• With a second clean and dry cloth, immediately wipe all primer residues off with a buffing action

• Allow the substrate to dry for a minimum of 5 minutes before installing Bostik Fireban One

• Do not leave the primer longer than 4 hours before applying sealant/adhesive

• Re-prime if 4 hours has lapsed without applying sealant/adhesive

• Clean and re-prime if the primed surface is contaminated before Bostik Fireban One is applied

ApplicationBostik Fireban One should be dispensed from the sausage by means of a sausage barrel, available from Bostik. For sausages, clip the end of the sausage and place in the barrel gun. Screw end cap and nozzle onto barrel gun. Using the trigger extrude the sealant, to stop depress using the catch plate. Apply Bostik Fireban One in a continous bead using enough pressure to properly fill the joint. Tool off surface of sealant with an appropriate sized spatula or trowel. Apply sufficient pressure to leave a smooth, consistent surface and ensure maximum contact with the interface of the joint.

Joint Sealing Hint• Prime prior to the installation of the backing

rod• Always use backing rod for correct sealant

geometry and contact with the substrate• Ensure maximum adhesion to bond face and

depth to width ratio of 1:1 for 10mm joints and 1:2 for joints over 10mm up to 40mm and 3:4 for some joints in specialist applications (Refer to Application manual BOS 5.02 for specific joint configurations)

• Tool sealant to achive concave shape

Paintability Bostik Fireban One can be painted after full cure.Coatings containing solvents such as enamels, oil based or other coatings may cause the surface of the sealant to react creating a tacky surface. Surface coatings may discolour in direct contact with cured Bostik Fireban One. Surface coatings may crack and craze as a result of cyclical movement of supporting sealant joint. A field test is recommended to ensure compatibility of any coating with Bostik Fireban One (Refer PATS)

Important NotesFireban One must not be:• Used in chlorinated water such as swimming

pools, spas etc.• Used on any material containing bitumen• Constantly immersed in salt water• Used for glazing applications• Apply to cement based substrates within 28

days of initial pour or set• Used in trafficable joints greater than 10mm in

width• Apply at temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C• Exposed to water and alcohol before it has

completely cured• Finished using wet tooling techniques, such as

soapy water• Apply less than 6mm in width and depth• Apply as per Installation Manual BOS 5.02 to

Classifications/Standards• Fire resistance when tested in accordance with

AS1530.4-2014 and AS4072.1-2005.*Rating dependant on overall wall system configuration

Application InstructionsSurface PreparationBostik Firecaulk should be applied to a minimum depth of 6mm, maximum width of 40mm. The ratio of joints width to sealant depth should be approximately 2:1. Joint width should not be less than 6mm. The joint depth must allow a sealant depth, after installation of backer rod or bond breaking material, of a minimum of 6mm. Lap shear joints should have a bead width equal to or greater than twice the anticipated movement. A conservative design practice, which uses a portion of the sealant's movement capability as a safety factor is recommended. Sealants are subject to cohesive failure when the actual movement is greater than their rated capability.

PreparationClean all surfaces by removing foreign matter and contaminants such as oil, dust, grease, frost, water, surface dirt, old sealant sand any protective coating. Porous substrates should be cleaned by grinding saw cutting or blast cleaning (sand or water). Dust loose particles, etc should be blown out of joints with oil free compressed air or vacuum cleaned. Non porous and plastic surfaces should be cleaned by solvent or mechanical means. Cleaning solvents should not be allowed to air dry or evaporate without being wiped with a clean, dry cloth.

ApplicationBostik Firecaulk when used as an adhesive or sealant should be dispensed from either the cartridge or sausage sachet by means of a hand or air operated caulking gun designed for such application (available from Bostik). Cut the cartridge and screw on the supplied nozzle. Having previously cut this to give the required angle and bead size. Place the cartridge in a suitable Bostik extrusion

gun and press the trigger. For sausages, a barrel gun is required, this is available from Bostik. Clip the end of the sausage and place complete sausage with pierced end located at the top of the nozzle. Screw top of nozzle and housing on barrel of gun. Using the trigger on the gun extrude product from the sausage to stop product flow, using the thumb depress the catch plate mechanism located at the very rear of the gun, directly above the trigger. Apply Bostik Firecaulk in a continuous operation using positive pressure adequate to properly fill and seal the cavity.

Method of ApplicationSurfaces to be sealed should be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, dust, dirt and mould release agent. Install back-up material or joint filler as specified. Apply Bostik Firecaulk sealant in a continuous operation using a positive pressure adequate to property fill and seal the joint or penetration. Tool Bostik Firecaulk with sufficient pressure to spread the sealant against the back-up material and onto the joint surfaces. A tool with a concave profile is recommended to achieve the correct shape.

PaintabilityBostik Firecaulk is paintable after fully cured.Important Notes:• Bostik Firecaulk is not recommended for water

immersion, exposed external joint sealing or areas subject to heavy traffic.

• Bostik Firecaulk should not be applied with wet tooling techniques using solvents, water or detergent solution is not recommended.

• Bostik Firecaulk should not be applied to surfaces with special protective or cosmetic coatings without prior consultation with the manufacturer. Such surfaces include, but are not limited to, mirrors, reflective glass, or surfaces coated with Teflon, polyethylene or polypropylene.

• Bostik Firecaulk can be affected by water before or during cure. The sealant should not be stored, applied or cured in areas where unusually high humidity or free water is present during the application or initial cure.

• Bostik Firecaulk should be allowed to cure prior to subjecting to any intermittent water exposure.

• Do not apply to surfaces with temperature under 5ºC, as cure will be retarded.

Bostik Co-Operative Test ProgramBostik offer a service in which a program has been established to eliminate potential field problems by pre-testing Bostik adhesives with samples of building materials to which the adhesive will be applied. This service is available on large projects where pre-application testing will aid in determining the proper surface preparation method to achieve optimum adhesion. Consult a Bostik representative for further information.

Cure RateThe cure rate is dependant on the bead size (width & depth), and is greatly effected by temperature, humidity, and the presence of water and moisture on the substrate. Approximate cure rates at 23°C and 50% RH are as follows;

• 1mm – 1 day• 3mm – 5 days

Non-Bubbling1Xtreme Fire Seal contains no solvents or isocyanates and is based on Hybrid Sealant technology. In traditional sealant technologies, the presence of solvents and isocyanates can cause the release of CO₂ during the curing process, resulting in bubbles forming throughout the seal. This will void the effectiveness of the seal with regard to fire protection, flexibility and general durability. Xtreme Fire Seal is 100% non-bubbling, ensuring a quality finish every time.

Damp Application2Xtreme Fire Seal can be applied in damp or wet conditions and is unaffected by early onset rain during the curing process. This is advantageous in conditions where forthcoming weather is unpredictable or the seal was not protected from weather prior to application and means work can continue without interruption.

Classifications/StandardsXtreme Fire Seal has been certified under the following: • AS 4020 - approved for water potability• WaterMark SAI Global WMKA 25258• AS 1530.4-2014 - Fire resistance up to 4 hours

Method of ApplicationSURFACE PREPARATION

For optimum performance, surfaces to be seald should be clean, dry and free of dust, wax, grease or any loose or flaking paint. The joint depth should always be in the correct relationship of the joint width. A general rule is the ratio of joint depth to the width, with a joint width up to 10mm is 1:1, being a minimum of 5mm width and depth. Joints wider than 10mm, the required depth can be calculated by the formula below. Bostik Xtreme Fire Seal adheres perfectly without the use of a primer on most non porous substrates. Porous substrates should be pre-treated with Bostik Simson Prep P Primer. Always test adhesion prior to application.

Depth (mm) = (Width / 3) + 6

APPLICATIONCartridge application:

1. Cut the top of the cartridge and screw on the nozzle

2. Cut the nozzle to give the required angle and bead size

3. Place the cartridge in a caulking gun and squeeze thetriggerApply Bostik Xtreme Fire Seal in a continuous operationusing enough pressure to properly fill the joint. Tool offthe surface of the sealant with an appropriate sizedspatula or trowel. Apply sufficient pressure to leave a smooth, consistent surface and ensure maximum contact with the interface of the joint

Joint sealing hints:

- Always use a backing rod for correct sealant geometry and contact with the substrate

- Primer after the installation of the backing rod

- Ensure maximum adhesion to bond face

- Minimum allowable joint depth is 6mm

- Depth to width ration of 1:1 up to 10mm width and 1:2 from 10-50mm width

- Tool sealant to achieve concave shape
