Story and Faith …

Many of you have asked me to share some about our family trip to Europe so I am planning a presentation in the Fellowship Hall on October 17. I’ll show you some images and tell of a trip that was simply wonderful for us. Even with my grief over the

fire, I was able to enjoy the wonder of the trip.

It will not surprise many of you that I loved the history. There was so much history: Driving through the Brenner Pass thinking of the thousands of years of travelers that

had made that trek, walking in the forum in Rome and thinking of Peter and Paul or Julius Caesar or Augustus walking the same path, going to the spot in the Forum where Marc Antony gave his oration at Caesar’s funeral, crossing the oldest bridge in Europe, or standing in the spot Peter was

believed to be martyred. Those are just the beginning!

A very powerful moment of history for me was standing underneath the Arc de Triomphe. The Arc was one of three built by Napoleon as homages to the three triumphal arches in the Forum of Rome. As the Roman arches depicted the great victories of the Roman Legions, Napoleon’s Arc was to depict his triumph. Since his time, the Arc has stood as a memorial to all the soldiers of France. There are markers for World War 1, World War 2, and the war in Indochina (the

Vietnam War to us). Finally, there is the eternal flame over the Tomb of the Unknown

Soldier from World War 1.

I found myself surprisingly moved as we walked across the Arc one night. The whole history of the French Republic was right in front of me. Here I stood in this huge structure meant to herald Napoleon and the French Empire but the story it told me was of the Republic of France. What Napoleon had built as a monument to himself had

become part of a larger story – a greater narrative – of all of France.

In worship over the next several weeks, I invite all of to do the same thing: Join a larger narrative. We are moving our way through parts of the Books of the Law: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. (These are called the Torah from the Hebrew word for “Law” or Pentateuch which is Greek for “Five Scrolls.”) It is the story of the formation of the people of God starting in Abraham and moving

through the bondage on Egypt and the wanderings in the Wilderness.

It is the story of God’s people. Thus, it is our story too. God invites us to scan through the centuries and see how the Lord works with us just as surely as the Lord worked with them. We have the temptation to see the these as just quaint stories from the past, but

God invites us to see ourselves in God’s unfolding story.

God’s story includes rules for life. It includes rebellious people that don’t always obey those rules. It includes hope, forgiveness and salvation. Indeed, the story we see most clearly in Jesus is found there in what we call the Law. It is our story—it is our greater

narrative.

Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron

Jubilant Seniors On The Move Seniors 55 and older who are not signing up with Frances and the Team, you are missing some good trips and a lot of fun; so October is a good month, cooler days and we are headed to Statesville (just might see some color in the trees). Frances has snacks, water, and soft drinks on the bus and van; so you won’t get thirsty or hungry, and always a little humor; start making calls and get your name on the list, and here are the details: A tour of Thorlo Manufacturing Center and Thorlo Outlet of Statesville. If you are wondering what this company makes, Dr. Bob can give you all the details, because he says, he wears the best and most com-fortable socks in the world! We will have a tour guide who promises a fun and educa-tional tour. After the tour of the factory, we will go to the Outlet Center with a discount to go shopping, and you will probably find good gift items for Christmas. The tour starts at 10:00 am. This all takes place on Thursday, October 13th, and we will be departing from the church parking lot at 8:30 am SHARP; so don’t be late-loading will start by 8:15 am. That’s not all folks, after we depart from Thorlo, we head straight to Troutman, NC for some old fashion home cooking at Julia’s Talley House Restaurant. You don’t want to miss that treat! Cut off date is Thursday, October 6th at 3:00 pm or when the bus and van is filled, which ever comes first; so make Frances and the Team “happy” and get your name listed early! Return to Home base should be around 3:00 to 3:30 pm. See you at the loading zone-First Baptist Church parking lot by 8:15 am, the vehicles pull out at 8:30 am. Frances Gurley and The Jubilant Team

We need your contact information!

When there is something of vital importance that affects the entire First Baptist

Church congregation, how do you get that information? Are you on the church’s email

list? If you don’t have email, would you like to receive a phone call whenever an

email is sent to the membership? Help us communicate with you better by giving the

office your email address (and don’t forget to tell us when your address changes!), or

ask to be placed on the “call” list. Call the church office today to get this done!

We want to thank everyone at First Baptist Church for all the beautiful cards; some with beautifully written messages, that you have sent. Also, the visits have meant so much to us. David continues his courageous fight against Parkinson. He never complains. He has good days, and days that are not so good. That comes with the diagnosis. Still there is no cure, and there will not be, until they find out what causes Parkinson. Please continue to pray for David and me during this very difficult time.

Thank you and God bless, David and Jewel Drinkard
