February Donations: 10
We have just two more Sundays this month to reach our goal. Winter is
an important time for nutritious meals, and some families in our county
may be surviving on canned meat. Please think of these folks as you shop
for groceries. Thank you for your continued support of this vital ministry!
THANK YOU
The staff and inmates of Rutherford Correctional Center would like to
thank so much for your donations of pastries and/or gift bags for our annual
Inmate Christmas Dinner. The pastries were delicious and very much ap-
preciated. The generosity shown to the inmates by the members of your
church was greatly appreciated. Again, thanks for the support that you give
to the community and to the inmates of Rutherford Correctional Center.
Sincerely,
Cassandra Howell, Program Director

PASTOR’S COLUMN I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my
prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I
am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to com-
pletion by the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:3-6, NRSV)
It is hard to believe that the time has come for us to dedicate our renovated space for
God’s plans and purposes. I remember the anxiety I felt when I attended my first Building
Committee meeting in January 2013. We met in the Conference Room where the new Wel-
come Center is located. Blue prints were set over the table. Faithful people set around the
table sharing their vision of what they believed a new facility would look like.
First Baptist Church had been on a journey prior to that day and I was merely trying to
figure it out, to listen, and to pray for the clarity of God’s voice in the process. At that time,
First Baptist was in the process of consultation with an architect who was working to design
a new, two-story children’s education building on the site of our lower parking lot. As the
project spiked in cost, as questions were raised about the Building’s lack of connection to
our existing structure, and as the reality set in that we would still have aging space, the
Building Committee and the church felt that a change of direction was needed.
In consultation with McMillan, Pazdan and Smith Architects, First Baptist Church
changed directions. Renovation of our existing space was cost prohibitive when discussions
began. By 2015, processes to abate asbestos, materials and labor were at their lowest prices
in years. We learned that we had plenty of space, and that renovations could be done that
would maximize our space. Through prayer, the hard work of many volunteers and leaders
in our church, and through 15 months of renovations, here we are (well, almost, as we still
have some minor issues that need attention).
I cannot thank First Baptist Church enough for who you are. When doing building pro-
jects, there are numerous opinions. Everyone has preferences for style, colors, configura-
tions and technology. Everyone approaches costs from a difference perspective. Some
would rather spend more money to get everything exactly the way that we want it. Others
are conscientious of finances, and want to ensure that we look for the best deals and avoid
overspending. Some have sacrificed their preferences for the good of the church. The spirit
of cooperation has been fantastic. Energy has been positive. The Spirit has been present.
But, may I remind you, our church building is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end.
Few of you may actually remember when First Baptist’s sanctuary burned in December
1941. Many more have heard the story and seen pictures. It reminds us that our building,
like any other, is a fragile gift. We will need to maintain it. We will each need to do our part
through giving and volunteering, to keep it clean, attractive and maintained for generations
to come, as generations prior did for us.
At the same time, God is more concerned with what goes on inside the church building,
than the care of the building itself. God is more concerned about the prayers offered from
each Sunday School classroom. God is more concerned with children learning about the
unconditional love of his Son. God is more concerned with our youth learning to find and
follow Jesus Christ. God is more concerned with the hearts of members, and the collective
Spirit of our congregation when we gather for worship. God is more concerned that new-
comers, visitors and the least of these find grace, mercy, love and joy when they meet our
congregation.
Yes, God is more concerned about what happens within these walls than the walls them-
selves. Our space is not sacred in and of itself like the Jews understood the Temple to be.
Our space is sacred because this is the space in which a group of people gathers to worship,
pray, learn, teach, talk, listen and grow. This space is sacred because it is the space in which
the Holy Spirit has gathered a congregation to be God’s people. Let’s use it for God’s glory!
Grace and peace,
Tim

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.

HEAR AND RESPOND TO THE WORD
Anthem “These Walls” Sorenson
In these walls, we are amazed at what You’ve done,
And in these walls, we see the victories You have won,
Within these walls, within these walls.
And in these walls, we see You faithfully provide;
And in these walls, we see You lead us and You guide,
Within these walls, within these walls.
Chorus:
In these walls Your Spirit falls, and in this place, You show Your face.
So let these walls tell the story of Jesus lifted high.
Let our praises rise above this roof and reach to heaven’s sky.
Let this Church tell the story of people on their knees,
The healing of disease, and peace of unity within these walls.
In these walls, we see salvation of the lost.
And in these walls, transformation from the Cross,
Within these walls, within these walls.
In these walls, generations build their faith,
And in these walls, we see Your holy power great,
Within these walls, within these walls. (Chorus)
These walls hold the prayers of saints.
They speak the Truth without restraint.
Here we meet You, God!
Let these walls tell the story of Jesus lifted high!
Let our praises rise above this roof and reach to heaven’s sky.
Let the Church show the power of broken lives made whole,
Of families restored with faith in one accord within these walls.
We sing of Your power and hope within these walls.
Forgiveness and mercy are here within these walls. In these walls. CCLI#1858884

BUILDING DEDICATION LITANY OF RESPONSE
It is with joy that we gather to consecrate and dedicate our renovated space, its
equipment, and its furnishings to the glory of God and to the vocation God has
given to us to be His Spirit-led people and through us others may find and follow
Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God for our leadership, for the necessary resources
and the opportunity to renovate our Christian Education space to enhance the life of
our congregation. May our renovated space be a place where:
The faithful worship of the Triune God occurs
The Bible may be central to our lives
People of all ages may find and follow Jesus Christ
Our congregation may be equipped to share Jesus Christ in word and deed
with one another, our community and our world
Therefore, we the members of the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, with
glad and grateful hearts, consecrate and dedicate this renovated space
to the glory of God and in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In grateful remembrance of all who have loved and served this church in the past
and gratitude for those who will serve it in the future…
We, with sincere gratitude, consecrate and dedicate this renovated space, its
equipment, and its furnishings.
In appreciation of all who have freely given of their time, talents, and financial re-
sources so that this space might be re-imagined, re-purposed and reno-
vated…
We consecrate and dedicate this renovated space, its equipment, and its fur-
nishings. To provide an appropriate place where people of all ages, members and visitors
alike, believers and seekers alike, may study the Bible in a safe space and
amongst loving people…
We consecrate and dedicate this renovated space, its equipment, and its fur-
nishings.
To provide space where our congregation grows in love for one another and in num-
ber as we share Christ’s love in our community…
We consecrate and dedicate this renovated space, its equipment, and its fur-
nishings.
To provide space for prayer, for spiritual growth, for community and service
We consecrate and dedicate this renovated space its equipment, and its furnish-
ings. To Jesus Christ, God’s Only-begotten Son and our Lord and Savior, whose love for
all was expressed beautifully in his life, on his cross, in his resurrection,
and in hope of his return…
We consecrate and dedicate this renovated space, its equipment, and its fur-
nishings.
We also consecrate and dedicate ourselves anew to the faithful worship of the
Triune God, to our Christian discipleship, and to sharing the love of
Jesus Christ to one another, our community and our world.
