I am continually amazed at the opportunities for ministry and service offered to all age groups through this church. You are a blessing. We are also doing something different in worship this summer. We are moving seats in the sanctuary to experience worship in the round starting June 18. While the choir takes a well-deserved break in the summer, we will all be together in a different configuration of seating. How will it be? What will worship be like? Well, we don’t know. Nobody knows, but let’s try it and see what happens and go from there. John Wesley preached from a tree stump in his day in England. Early Disciples of Christ worshiped outside in Cane Ridge, Kentucky two hundred years ago. Come and see. Is that enough for summer? Probably, but every morning I slow my day to read an email from Garrison Keillor and The Writers Almanac. In it he shares poetry and something historical about writers, poets or other important people. Once a week I get an email from poet laureate Ted Kooser and the American Life in Poetry. It’s just enough to get me to pay attention to the God who is quietly at work in this world, in our lives, in our church. Try it. You might like it. Yes, summer is busy here, busy with the work of God in this place. Be a part of it. Watch and listen. Peace….Chris

CALLER No. 11 Vol. 13 ~ June 6, 2017

From the Preacherman….

How did summertime get so busy? School is out and vacations have commenced and it is supposed to be quieter and slower, but that is just not the case, is it? There is much going on for you to know about, pray about, and keep in mind as the summer progresses.

I am moving, not from here, but to here, finally. Sometime in the latter part of this month a moving truck will stop at 934 Standish Place North here in Owensboro and deposit all of my family’s worldly possessions in the house there. Is there anything more exasperating and insane than moving? The answer is clearly no, if you were wondering. I apologize in advance for seeming distracted. I hope you understand.

Summer also brings with it church camps, mission trips and Vacation Bible School. We have lots of children and youth involved in various camps and trips this summer. Many adults are also involved behind and in front of the scenes of those ministries, as well as for VBS. Did we have all that years ago? I don’t remember, but the possibilities excite me.

Thank you First Christian Friends, We want to thank everyone who has helped us. Your kindness is appreciated so much. Thank you for your visits and all the delicious food that has been delivered to our home. Thanks to Ken Lawson for transportation to Church. Jim & Trudy Wimsatt

I’m sending you this note to let you know that your generosity of time and financial resources to the Region and General Church do not go unnoticed. Your gifts to the Disciples Mission Fund and Christmas Special Day Offering support our shared ministries. On behalf of the CCK Board and Staff, please accept our sincere thanks. It is a blessing to be in ministry with you. Peace, Greg Alexander, CCK General Minister

Brother John & Men of First Christian, What a great fellowship we had with you and the brothers of First Christian. We were greeted with warm, friendly smiles and the aroma of the treat to come. The spirit was upbeat and joyous. The effort you and your crew put into this event was obvious, for no stone was left unturned. On behalf of all the men present, we thank you for all of your hard work and providing us with such a scrumptious breakfast along with great fellowship. In the words of the songwriter – It was a foretaste of Glory Divine… Thanks again for everything! The Men’s Mass Choir & the loving Brothers of our Community

Dear Friends, Today, through your gift, you helped care for 5,000 Older Adults! Most are active and living independently on one of the Christian Care Communities’ campuses located across Kentucky. They simply need an affordable and safe place where they feel supported and loved – a community they call home. Others are frail and need skilled care in one of our Christian Care Health centers where help is always close at hand. Chaplains at each Christian Care Communities’ location work to fulfill the mission of enhancing the journey of life for older adults by focusing on the spiritual care of our residents, their families and staff members. Worship services and Bible studies are a regular part of each community. Thank you for partnering with us to enhance the journey of life for Older Adults. Your gift of $250 is appreciated. In His Service, James W. Patton, L.L.M.,M. Div., Vice president – Mission Advancement and General Counsel

Children Worship & Wonder and Children’s Sunday School

In order to give our wonderful volunteers a break and to give the children at FCC a new worship opportunity, there will be no Children Worship & Wonder for the summer. Beginning June 18, there will be a special Children's Worship Area set up in the sanctuary. In this special area, there will be several quiet Worship & Wonder style activities available for children to interact with during worship. Parents are welcome to join their children in this area or simply sit near the Children's Worship Area during the service. Our hope is to give your children a new kind of worship experience. Children Worship & Wonder will resume when school starts at the end of the summer. Sunday School will continue through the summer with the exception of Sunday, July 2 (4th of July weekend).

The Disciples Women’s Ministries would like to invite the entire Church to support the June outreach project which is a monetary gift to Foods Resource Bank. Monetary gifts may be placed in the offering plate or dropped off in the Church office (Please indicate that your gift is for Foods Resource Bank). We would like to provide enough funding ($2,000.00) for a green house to be built in a developing country. Foods Resource Bank raises money to help people in developing countries grow their own food. Each year nearly 200 U.S. growing projects, volunteers, companies, and organizations raise over $3 million to support 50-60 overseas programs. Through its growing projects Foods Resource Bank promotes agriculture, sustainability, community, grassroots empowerment, and awareness.
