SALUTATIONS FROM SHAWN

i thank you God for most this amazing day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing any—lifted from the no of all nothing—human merely being doubt unimaginable You?

Poet E. E. Cummings didn’t much like punctuation but he loved nature and

God (not in that order). He understood God’s love for us, revealed in part in the beauty of the world. As summer arrives (or so we hope), it’s time to give

thanks for the green trees, brilliant flowers, and blue true dream of sky that God formed.

And it’s time to marvel that God’s amazing world was created for every “human merely being”, even if we are the “no of all nothing.” Truly God’s love

is greater than we can imagine.

When the Apostle Paul wrote his first letter to the church at Corinth, he wrote about God’s love. Although we read 1 Corinthians 13 at weddings, Paul didn’t

have romantic love in mind. He wrote of divine love revealed in people

through God’s gracious, incredible generosity. God has given holy love to us, flawed and sinful as we are, to share with one another.

When Paul wrote of love being patient and kind, not envious nor selfish, but

rejoicing in truth and enduring, Paul documented a love that imitates God’s

love and thinks of other before self. This love knows when we lose ourselves in serving others we will find the person God has created us to be. This love

chooses to love actively even without reciprocation even when rejected.

Sometimes the work of love is difficult. Thanks be to God that Jesus

persevered through rejection and hatred to show us love is the most powerful force we will ever know. Love never ends; love is an infinite yes from God to

us. How can we doubt unimaginable God?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Shawn

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Schuylkill Haven Food Pantry June 17, July 15 & August 19 On the third Friday of the month, the Schuylkill Haven Council of Churches distributes food at their Food Pantry, located on Market Street behind Evans

Delivery (the old Walk-In Shoe Factory), and beginning at 1 PM.

GriefShare, 2nd and 4th Sundays, 1:30 PM

Bethesda EC Church, Rt. 183.

GriefShare is for people mourning the death of a loved one. For more

information call 570-739-2241.

Fit First 2016: Challenge Walk to Jerusalem Let the walking begin! We’re going for the triad: three years of walking for

happiness, health and (w)holiness. It’s 5,750 miles between Schuylkill Haven and Jerusalem. As a community we can spend these warmer days of the year

walking for health. Then we’ll pool our miles at the end of the summer to see

if we made it to Jerusalem. Most people can walk a mile in about 20 minutes. If a person walked seven miles a week, starting April 1 and ending August 31,

that would be 154 miles. If even half of our members participate in the challenge, we could easily accumulate 24,400 miles…while feeling much better

at the end of the summer! Join as we walk to where Jesus walked!

SCHUYLKILL ASSOCIATION

Proposed Four Associations Merger For several years, members of the East Berks, Heidelberg, Reading and Schuylkill Associations have met to discuss the possibility of merging into one

association. The purpose of the merger would be to improve and strengthen shared ministry without needlessly duplicating efforts as well as to equip and

empower churches, clergy and members-in-discernment for service to Christ.

At all four association spring meetings, approval was given to take a step closer to merger by developing by-laws and an organizational structure for the

proposed association. If you have suggestions for or questions about this proposed merger, please talk to Pastor Shawn.

Camping at Locust Lake State Park or Rosemont Resort The Schuylkill Association supports a summer chaplain for both camping sites.

Chaplain Don Lyons is in his fifth year of offering this ministry, offering a Christian presence as a trained counselor. Locust Lake worship starts at 9:30

am; Rosemont starts at 11 am. Chaplain Lyons is looking for a guitarist to

assist with worship and encourages church members to visit frequently.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

The Council of Churches of Schuylkill Haven and Vicinity will meet Tuesday, July 26, at 7 PM at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, 201 Randel St.

Meetings are open to all church members of the Council.

The Council of Churches continues its monthly food pantry for people in need

in the area, offered on the third Friday of the month. In addition, the Council of Churches provides emergency housing and assists with heating and fuel

emergencies on a limited basis.

For the second year, the Council of Churches, assisted by donations from the community, offered the Backpack Buddy Program through the Schuylkill Haven

Area Elementary Center. Children who are eligible for reduced or free lunches

receive backpacks with food to take home for the weekend. The program will renew next fall.

created a website for the Council. Other Council officers include Mr. Dean

Knott, Vice President, Rev. Kathleen Ash-Flashner, Treasurer, and Mrs. Yvonne Szpara, Secretary. Please talk to Pastor Shawn for more information.

UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

A new theme for the United Church of Christ emerged at last year’s General

Synod: Be The Church. What does it mean to Be The Church? UCC minister Holly Miller Shank, raised in central Pennsylvania wrote: “I believe it is

a combination of several important aspects: Worship, Education, Advocacy, Business and Fellowship. When the church gathers in local congregational

meetings or in large denominational gatherings, all five of these areas are

evident.” As a church of Jesus Christ, our ministry takes place inside the church walls and out in the community. We never stop being church, actively

living the teachings of Jesus Christ in all that we do, so that others may see Jesus through us.

“Be The church. Protect the environment. Care for the poor. Forgive often. Reject racism. Fight for the powerless. Share earthly and spiritual resources.

Embrace diversity. Love God. Enjoy this life.”
