Dear Parishioners, At this time of year I invite you to prayerfully reflect on who you would like to nominate for potential service for a three-year term on our Parish Pastoral Council. You may nominate yourself. From those nominated, qualified and willing, five new members will be drawn during the Vigil of Pentecost Mass at 4pm on May 23rd. Please keep in mind the following:

The scope and authority of a Parish Pastoral Council is clearly described in our Archdiocesan Guidelines. It is very important to respect and to understand the role of consultation in Church leadership. The Pastor is required to consult the PPC in matters pertaining to the good of the parish and its mission. Our Archdiocesan Guidelines describe the PPC succinctly this way:

As a consultative body, the PPC is responsible to the pastor, assisting and supporting him in his leadership role. It recognizes the varied gifts of the parish members and invites them to an active leadership role in the parish.

The PPC should be an important means by which the pastor will hear the voice of the parish.

Through its deliberations and consultation with the pastor, the PPC helps to unite the pastor and parishioners. Together they discern the pastoral needs of the parish and ways in which those needs can be addressed.

Characteristics of a Parish Pastoral Council

Prayerful. The council devotes time to reflective prayer at each meeting and makes provision at least once a year to have some special time or meetings spent together solely in prayer, reflection and spiritual training.

Pastoral. The council is pastoral in the sense that its purpose is to assist in the development of an overall mission plan for the parish in order to make Christ evermore present to the parishioners and to the wider community.

Representative. The council members represent the entire parish community and exercise their responsibility with a concern that includes all parishioners.

Discerning. Through a prayerful consensus process, the council merges the diverse experiences, skills and gifts of the council members, and having listened to the parishioners’ needs and ideas, discerns recommendations concerning the direction and priorities of the parish.

Responsive. The council has a responsibility to be sensitive to and cognizant of justice and peace issues at the local, national and international levels.

Enabling. In the spirit of God’s love, the members of the PPC strive to recognize and support each other’s gifts and seek ways in which each parishioner’s gifts may surface, grow and flourish for the good of the Church.

The nomination form is provided on page 8 of this bulletin.

In the gospel today, Jesus says to us, “This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you...You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Have you considered answering the call to serve those in need by joining the Society of St. Vincent dePaul? Weekly Reflection Prayerfully submitted by Deacon Louis J. Piazza

I, myself, am also a human being… Reminded of my own faults, failings and shortcomings, I begin this reflection echoing Peter’s words to Cornelius from the Acts of the Apostles. This week’s scripture readings remind us that we are all equal in the eyes of God, and that we are all chosen to have life through Him and in Him. The expression of this love is manifest, in its fullness, by our adherence to His Father’s commandments, the greatest of which is first, to love God with all of our heart, mind and strength, and the second, to love one another as He has loved us. There is both beauty and simplicity in this call to holiness. We can bear much fruit (love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) when we remain in His love and keep His commandments. And yet, the complete and perfect expression of love is unobtainable. Our humanity will always cause us to stumble and fail, not matter how great our desire to do the opposite. We can have much success, and we can be transformed, in the good that we do. But, we will on occasion, in ways big and small, falter and fail in our pursuit to remain in Him. Last week, at the 11:30 liturgy, I preached on the need to be forever vigilant in staying rooted to Christ as the vine of spiritual well-being. I warned against drifting from good that can occur in ways that are subtle, incremental, and undetectable, and I pointed out our constant need to be nourished by the word of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. I challenged the assembly at this liturgy to be actively transformed by their participation in the liturgy and shared with them the prayers that are privately offered by the Deacon on their behalf. My homily, though it was centered on a wonderful and beautiful message, was broken in its introduction. I want to extend my sincerest apologies to Craig Taylor (who brought this to my attention) and the other attendees at this celebration for allowing my reference to the tragic death of Freddie Gray to be interpreted as a summary judgement against members of the Baltimore Police Department. My desire to “do good” in breaking open the word of God, contained in its contents a hurtful reference to the failure of the Baltimore Police to fully live up to their oath to “protect and serve”. It is ironic, sad, and perhaps only appropriate, that I failed, in this very homily, to live up to my own vow, to live in Him and by implication, to love one another as he has loved us. Last Sunday, was a “wake up call” for me, and a wonderful reminder for us all, that living His commandments to the fullest are not easy, and that it takes incredible vigilance to keep from drifting in either intent or in action. Deacons, at their ordination, are tasked by the Bishop to “Believe what your read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach”. Please know that I take this charge and responsibility with great sincerity, but that like Peter, I am also a human being.

School News The third graders hosted their annual "International Festival" on April 30th. Parents, grandparents, teachers, and students eagerly joined them after receiving their passports and they traveled to fourteen different countries. Each group taught about their country in a different way. Food, clothing, music, and posters were just a few of the ways the students creatively taught the visitors. It was a great day! Pictured here are students Diego Panzavecchia and Ronan Culbert teaching about Argentina.

Around the Parish After Masses this weekend, we will be distributing baby bottles from the Pregnancy Care Center (PCC), a Christ-centered ministry committed to saving lives physically, spiritually, and emotionally, one life at a time. Saint Augustine Parish 2015 Pastoral Council Nominations All parishioners are invited to actively and prayerfully participate in the nomination and selection

of the new Parish Pastoral Council members.

Rationale for Parish Council: Vatican II, "Dogmatic Constitution on the Church":

“By reason of the knowledge, competence or pre-eminence which they have, the laity are empowered – indeed sometimes obliged – to manifest their opinion on those things which pertain to the good of the church…" Purpose: "To assist the pastor in his leadership role of planning, organizing, initiating, promoting, coordinating and reviewing the evangelization, worship, religious education and service activities within the parish." Objectives: "To assess adequately the needs of the whole parish and its members, and to develop and implement a pastoral plan which will promote the common good of the parish."

Let us unite in prayerful consideration and with confidence in the Holy Spirit as we nominate and select for the Parish Pastoral Council those who will best serve the parish of St. Augustine. May Our Lady of Good Counsel and Saint Augustine pray for us. Please use the form below for nominations and return it in the offertory basket at any Mass on the weekends of May 9-10 or May 16-17. Additional forms are available in the back of the church and in the parish office. Thank you!
