Words of Appreciation by Pastor Dan

Please join Roger Smith, the entire Staff-Parish committee and myself in showing your appreciation for the fine service rendered this congregation by Phyllis Maley, Church Administrator, over the past 17 years. Phyllis has truly been a “jack of all trades and (master of most)” during her tenure here. We have all come to rely on her for her many competencies but especially for her devotion to, and love of, this great church.

Fortunately, Phyllis will not be leaving completely. She wants to be free to spend more time with the grandchildren, tend to reading a stack of books that has collected, pursue her love of gardening and generally enjoy life. Her plan is to continue working half-time for the church. Specifically, she plans to continue her fine work with the finance and foundation committees, oversee the accuracy of our financial statements and lend us guidance on our annual stewardship effort. So, we may not see Phyllis in the office quite as much but her expertise and wisdom will still be available to us. For that, we are all grateful.

When next you see Phyllis, I invite you to verbally express your gratitude for such loyal and devoted service to Jackson FUMC.

Of course, Phyllis’ stepping down will leave us with a great void in our staff. We can never replace her but we must try to move forward as best we can. The following ad will soon begin appearing in our Memphis Conference newsletters and communications and perhaps in other local media such as the Jackson Sun. You may know of friends or acquaintances who may possess the necessary skills and background. If so, we encourage you to have them make contact with us. The ads will begin to run around July 15th and we hope to have the best candidate in place not later than September 1st, 2012.

Hope your summer is, so far, a great one!

SunDay SerVices Delivered... Connects Shut-Ins to Jackson FUMCby Bobbie Mays

Three years ago, a DVD Ministry was started as a way to reach out to members who could no longer attend FUMC. Today, this outreach continues each week bringing smiles and God’s love to many!

Congregational Pastor, Cecil Kirk, knows FUMC’s shut-ins well. Since 2004, he’s been visiting each resident at least monthly, taking time to talk with them about whatever is on their minds. Recently, Cecil shared that “all are interested in keeping in touch with the church. They all read the newsletter and can tell you everything going on at FUMC! They miss their Sunday School classes and weekly worship in their church, so watching Sunday’s services through the DVDs keeps them connected.”

In the Spring of 2009, an initial committee was formed to get the ministry off the ground. It was co-chaired by volunteers Amy Groff (Eichkoff) and Sarah Savery. Also serving on that committee were Ann Lawrence, Bettye Labry and Cecil Kirk. With their leadership, it didn’t take long for SunDay SerVice Delivered (DVD) to evolve. DVDs of the previous Sunday’s traditional worship service were made and volunteers were recruited to deliver and visit with residents in independent and assisted-living nursing homes as well as to homebound members. An appeal was made to church members through the newsletter and to Sunday School classes for volunteers and financial support to help defray the costs.

How does this ministry work? Terry Bivens, who video records the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service each week, makes a master copy of the service so that DVDs may be made for the ministry on Mondays. Then each week, DVDs are picked up by faithful volunteers who make deliveries at various assisted-living and nursing care residences. Today, the ministry continues to be strong and it has even expanded!

Each Monday for the past three years, Nancy Rahm, the present coordinator, has stopped by my office to pick up DVDs and bulletins to take to Jackson Oaks. There, she takes

time to visit with a few residents, many times having lunch with them. Jan Littrell, who has also been involved since 2009, became interested in not only sharing the DVD with her mother, Verla Brasher, who lives at Jackson Meadow, but in arranging a regular time weekly for other residents to watch FUMC’s service together in their activity center. She and husband, Garey, have even set up the video as a “worship service” with hymnals and bulletins provided. The residents follow along in the bulletins, singing the hymns, reading the responses, listening to the sermon and praying together. Typically, there are 12-15 who worship with one another. Just as FUMC observes a time for Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month, communion elements are also served to residents on the first Sunday by Jan and Garey. Most recently they have begun delivering DVDs to residents of Elmcroft.

Hope Voegeli, who picks up DVDs regularly, appreciates that she and Tom can worship together at home and feel a special connection to the church. At Morningside, Pat Goodpaster suggested that a few of the residents there might also enjoy watching the service together. Now, they too, have a scheduled time on their calendar on Sundays for anyone interested in participating in worship. The response has been so

well received that now 10-12 residents there also look forward to gathering regularly for worship.

So far in 2012, more than 200 DVDs have been distributed. There have been fifteen purchases of services and on average, thirty-five people view FUMC worship services weekly. SunDay SerVice Delivered brings the Word of God to others…a ministry reconnecting, reaching out and caring for one another.

New Additions to the FUMC Libraryby David Hollis

The Wesleyan Movement was known for uniting "knowledge" and "vital piety." We seek to learn so that we can grow in all areas of life, but especially our faith. We are blessed to have new additions to the FUMC Library. Dr. Lee Sheppard donated a DVD set from "The Great Courses" series. The set is entitled "Early Christianity: The Experience of the Divine" and features instruction from Emory professor Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson. We hope classes and groups will feel free to use this material for study and reflection. Anyone interested in "checking out" this material, please contact David Hollis. The library also has a new set of the Interpretation Bible Commentary. This set is an excellent study tool for Sunday School or small group leaders or students writing papers on Biblical passages.

Youth News & Events

page 9

They’re Doing What?A Youth Week Primerby Mary Beth Bernheisel

Who decided that it was a good idea to let youth move into the church for a week? I actually don’t know the answer to that…the tradition was in place long before my family and I came to FUMC for the first time in 2006. And while it does seem a little odd, is there anywhere else you’d like teenagers to be for a week in the summer than living in the church?

Me neither. If you’ve never actually participated in Youth Week, maybe you’d like to know what exactly we do for this week. Well, every year is different. The constants are that we have a band who comes to be with us for the week and provide music for worship and that we have a speaker who also spends the week with us. This year our speaker is Jacob Fasig. He and his wife, Allison (Whiteside), were interns in the FUMC youth program back in their Lambuth days. Our band is returning for their fifth year with us. Ohio Avenue is a three-person band from Alabama, and when they come to be with us, it’s always a great reunion. They always say that they love to come to FUMC for Youth Week.

In the mornings, we go into the community to be in service with and to our neighbors. This year, among other things, we’ll be working at the Care Center, at Lambuth Memorial UMC to help with RIFA’s Summer Club and at the New Southern. In the afternoons, we rest a little bit and then find lots of ways to have fun. One of our traditions is to go to Wimpy’s in Greenfield, TN to nosh on some burgers. We’ll also go swimming and on an epic photo/video scavenger hunt.

At the end of the week, Frank and Darlene Lawrence are hosting us at their river house and we’ll be hanging out there together and spending some time on the water.

The part that excites me most is Youth Sunday on July 15. Several of our seniors will be preaching, sharing their musical talents and writing some of the liturgy. You won’t want to miss it.

As you might imagine, an event like this is a massive undertaking. So, a huge thanks to all the parents who have given so much time and effort to make all of this happen, and to so many other dedicated church members (former youth parents and those who are just invested in the lives of our young people) who have worked so hard.

Mark 6:33-44 follows the scripture that Dan preached on recently; the one where Jesus tells the disciples to join him as He goes away to a secluded place to get some rest. The part we didn’t get to, but that Dan alluded to, was that the disciples’ escape to a deserted place was foiled. Jesus and the disciples got into a boat, but the people standing around recognized them. They ran in the direction that the boat was going and ended up getting to that secluded place before the disciples and Jesus even got there. The scripture says that they ran ahead from all the cities. I get this picture of people streaming out of their homes and their businesses and forming one great big stampede. So much for seclusion.

And that’s how we ended up with 5,000 men plus an untold number of women and children waiting for Jesus to show up. And the scripture says that Jesus had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.

I spent two weeks in June at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary just outside of Boston, beginning the long journey of getting my Doctorate of Ministry in Ministry to Emerging Generations, which is just a fancy way of saying Ministry to Children and Youth. We talked a lot about the perils that face our young people. Advertisers and marketers focus their messages almost exclusively on adolescents because they know that adolescents have the largest amount of discretionary income, and that if they can get a young person hooked on a brand or a product, they’ve potentially created a customer for life. We watched music videos featuring music that contains very adult themes, but that are marketed to

kids as young as seven and eight by using singable lyrics and fun beats.

Producers of culture know that we are sheep without a shepherd. They know that our young people are looking for anything to lead them, anything that looks like an answer for the brokenness they feel, the brokenness that is simply part of the human condition. But those producers of pop culture don’t have compassion on our young people who are like sheep without a shepherd. They prey on them. They make money off of them because they are so vulnerable and so lost.

We are surrounded by young people who receive the message from music, from marketers, and from their peers that life should be good, that they should be comfortable, and that they shouldn’t have

to worry about anything. But the Christian story tells us differently. It tells us that brokenness is inevitable, that we’re all going to feel hurt, grief, disappointment, and sadness, that life just isn’t a crazed free-for-all of thrills and happiness. If we don’t help them see where they fit into the great story of our faith that we were created good, we messed up, and that God redeemed us then our culture will help them see themselves in a different story. One where they deserve to be

happy and deserve to have whatever they want. If we do not shepherd them, then they will be shepherded by a culture that situates them in a false story. It’s more attractive in the short term, but it does not give life.

It may be that you don’t know how effective you can be in the life of a young person. It may be that you’ve tried to make a difference but that it doesn’t seem to be working. But you are surrounded with sheep who have no shepherd. And you are called to have compassion. You are called to bring the good news of a greater story, the greatest story, in fact, that brings life in the midst of death and light in the midst of darkness.
