FIRST FOALS 2009-2012by Bill Oppenheim
Tracking the progress of young sires is obviously one of the
most important aspects of the APEX (Annual Progeny Earnings
indeX) ratings. Usually we focus on the two most recent sire
crops rated, which in this case would be F2011 (third-crop sires
of 2015) and F2012 (second-crop) sires. In order to provide a
little context for commenting on these two rather small crops of
North American and European sires (76 F2011 sires, 69 F2012
sires, no doubt a direct consequence of the financial crash of
2008), this time we are also reviewing 82 F2009 sires (first foals
6-year-olds of 2015, five crops racing) and 81 F2010 sires (first
foals 5-year-olds of 2015, four crops racing). So these four crops
constitute 308 of the 820 APEX sires at year-end 2015.
The reason why the F2009 crop is so relevant is that there is a
wide spread of successful sires among this group. Darley had
spent an estimated $200-million in acquiring top stallion
prospects in 2006-07, especially including most of the available
top 3-year-olds of 2007. Three of those Darley sires rank among
the top five NA-EU F2009 sires: Darley Kentucky sires Street
Sense and Hard Spun, and Darley Kildangan (Ireland) sire
Teofilo. The other two top F2009 sires are Ireland’s Morristown
Lattin Stud’s Dark Angel and Coolmore Ashford’s Scat Daddy,
who was due to stand for a crop-leading $100,000 in 2016 but
most unfortunately died late in 2015.
Looking at the four key tables for sire groups--A Runner (top
2% earners) and ABC Runner (top 8% earners) Indexes, and the
number of A Runners and ABC Runners--there is not one sire
who dominates proceedings, as is sometimes the case. Dark
Angel (2.64) is the leading F2009 sire by the most important
measurement, the A Runner Index, and also ranks among the
top five F2009 sires in the other three categories. Scat Daddy
(2.52) is second by A Runner Index, and tied with Teofilo as the
leading sire of A Runners, with 37 each; keep in mind that an
individual horse by an F2009 sire could be counted as many as
five year-starters and five A Runners, depending on how many
years the horse raced and what earnings level it achieved in
each of those years.
The 2007 GI Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense didn’t top
any of the four categories, but ranks second by ABC Index (1.87,
which is 15% of runners), and second by number of ABC Runners
(109). Cont. p3

First Foals 2009-2012 cont. from p1
Hard Spun (117) is the leading F2009 sire by number of ABC
Runners, while Teofilo, besides tying Scat Daddy for the lead by
number of A Runners, also ranks among the top six F2009 sires
in all four categories.
At least four other F2009 sires receive honorable mention. The
French sire Kendargent, who stands at the Haras de Colleville, is
the leading F2009 NA-EU sire by ABC Runner Index (2.05), and
also ranks number seven in the sire crop by A Runner Index
(2.12); he has a seriously good 2.94 rating for 2-year-olds by ABC
Index, as well as a very strong 2.36 ABC Index for 3-year-olds.
Calumet’s English Channel (2.49) ranks fourth by A Runner
Index, and ranks among the group’s top 10 in the other three
categories. The English sire Dutch Art, who stands at Cheveley
Park Stud, ranks between seventh and 11th in all four
categories, while another Darley Kentucky sire, Discreet Cat, has
a 2.07 A Runner Index (eighth among F2009 sires) and ranks
among the top 10 F2009 sires by number of both A Runners and
ABC Runners. Click here for the entire F2009 table.
INTO MISCHIEF, CURLIN TOP F2010 NA-EU SIRES
Spendthrift’s Into Mischief has been a total revelation from
four small crops averaging 35 foals and ranks second among 448
NA-EU sires with an A Runner Index of 4.07, second only to the
mighty Galileo (4.09). With as many 2-year-olds of 2016 as in his
first four crops combined it will be difficult for him to sustain
such a high rating, but he has sure risen from obscurity to rate
as a serious sire, and
these bigger crops
will also certainly
improve his chances
of really becoming a
major sire. He also
leads F2010 sires by
ABC Runner Index
(2.15).
Curlin, in whom a
20% interest was
reportedly sold for
over $6-million, triggering a move to Hill ’n’ Dale from Lane’s
End and a big jump in stud fee from $35,000 to $100,000, is
another of the four F2010 NA-EU sires with an A Runner Index
over 2.00, and one of three with an ABC Runner Index over 2.00;
those figures are 2.12 A Index, and 2.10 ABC Index. Cont. p4
Into Mischief | Brittlan Wall photo
HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 7 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • JAN. 20, 2016
He tops F2010 sires with 22 A Runners, and is miles ahead by
number of ABC Runners, with 87; Darley’s New Approach is a
distant second in that category, with 56. Into Mischief’s 4.07 A
Index, and Curlin’s 87 ABC Runners, are both very striking
performances in the context of the entire population of North
American and European sires.
Also over 2.00 A
Runner Index among
NA-EU F2010 sires
are New York's
Keane Stud’s Frost
Giant (2.61) and Hill
’n’ Dale’s Midnight
Lute (2.27). Frost
Giant also has a 2.12
ABC Runner Index,
though the rich New
York-bred program undoubtedly helps his figures. In terms of A
Runners, as mentioned Curlin leads the group with 22; Midnight
Lute is tied with former Spendthrift sire Tiz Wonderful, now in
Korea, with 18 each. Into Mischief has 17, with Darley’s New
Approach on 16. In terms of ABC Runners, Curlin 87, New
Approach 56, as mentioned; Tiz Wonderful has sired 53 ABC
Runners, Midnight Lute 50. Click here for the F2010 table.
F2011 SIRES: FOUR EUROS AND A PIONEER
The reverberations of the world financial crash of 2008 saw
prices in the Thoroughbred business plunge for almost exactly
12 months to the day, from the end of the Keeneland
September Sale of 2008 to the end of the Keeneland September
Sale of 2009. For the next three years prices crawled along the
bottom, until the big recovery in prices in 2013. In 2010, though,
there was little temptation to pitch the prices for entering
stallions too high. Sea The Stars, widely considered the best
racehorse seen in Europe since Sea-Bird, and the best racehorse
seen anywhere since Secretariat, went to stud at a price of
€85,000 at Gilltown Stud in Ireland, but even that was a steep
discount from what his price would have been the year before.
In Kentucky, the highest entering stud fee was $25,000 for
Zensational, at Hill ’n’ Dale; this was the lowest ‘highest entering
stud fee’ in Kentucky for at least 20 years.
By the end of 2015, the first crops by sires which retired in
2010, and had their first foals in 2011, had finished racing as
4-year-olds, so we have a pretty good idea of which sires are
making the grade. Among the major sires (those with 200+
year-starters through the end of 2015), four European sires plus
American Pharoah’s sire, WinStar’s Pioneerof the Nile, each has
more than 10 A Runners thus far. Cont. p6

“Keeneland January, the opening sale of the year and usually about two-thirds ofthe First-Half Mixed Sale total also highlighted by sales at Fasig-Tipton,Tattersalls, Arqana, and Goffs in February saw 11% more catalogued and 10%more sold than last January. The gross was up less than half of one percent, though, so the average was down by 9%. However, the entire Winter Mixed salesaccount for just 4% of the overall NA-EU thoroughbred auction marketplace. So nopanic; these sales are reflections of what’s in the Catalogues, and the good stockfrom Dispersals proved demand is still high for the right article.”

These are, in order of number of A Runners (keep in mind for
F2011 sires it is possible that one horse could count as three A
Runners if it had raced all three years and its earnings were
above the A Runner threshold for each of those years in
whichever jurisdiction it competed): Sea The Stars (17);
Coolmore Ireland’s Mastercraftsman (15); Aussie import
Fastnet Rock (first Northern Hemisphere foals 2011 but a
champion sire in Australia), another Coolmore sire, and
Pioneerof the Nile (13 each); and France’s Le Havre (11), who
stands at the Haras de la Cauviniere, and has become France’s
most expensive sire, at €35,000 for 2016. Sea The Stars is also
the leading F2011 NA-EU sire by number of ABC Runners (40),
ahead of Pioneerof the Nile (35), Mastercraftsman (34), Le
Havre (28), and Fastnet Rock (24), who is tied for fifth in this
category with WinStar’s Colonel John (24).
However, the two leading F2011 NA-EU sires by both A Runner
and ABC Runner indexes are both ‘provincial’ sires with fewer
than half the year-starters of the five leaders by number of
successful runners (we used 80 year-starters as the cutoff point
for these sires to be rated for these tables). These are Adena
Springs North’s Giant Gizmo (3.97 A Index) and Paul Reddam’s
California sire Square Eddie (3.54). Giant Gizmo is one of a
number of sons of Giant’s Causeway making a name for himself,
as are two other young sons of Giant’s Causeway who stand in
New York, Frost Giant and Giant Surprise (1st 2-year-olds 2015).
Square Eddie, who has virtually been a private stallion for
leading California owner Paul Reddam, took his rating to a
higher level when Ralis came east to win the GI Champagne S.,
at Belmont Park. These two are also the leading sires by ABC
Runner Index, though in reverse order: Square Eddie (2.10) just
edges Giant Gizmo (2.08) in that category. Click here for the
entire F2011 table.
F2012 SIRES:
If the sires with first foals 2011 mark a low point in terms of
strength in depth in a sire crop, the opposite might be the case
with the F2012’s. Of the top 10 NA-EU F2012 sires by A Runner
Index (60+ year-starters), six stand in Kentucky and three in
Europe. But the overall F2012 NA-EU leader by both A Runner
and ABC Runner Index is none other than Florida’s Ocala Stud's
Kantharos, who we recently called “the best value sire on the
planet.” These figures illustrate why: 3.47 A Runner Index, 2.26
ABC Runner Index. But this does look like quite a promising
group of sires: Ashford’s Lookin At Lucky (3.42) and Munnings
(2.23) rank among the leaders in this category, along with
Spendthrift’s Line of David (2.60) and Temple City (2.36). Both
Darley’s Midshipman (2.25) and Airdrie’s Majesticperfection
(2.20) also make the top 10 by A Runner Index. The three
Europeans, one each in France, England, and Ireland, are: the
Haras de Bonneval’s Siyouni (2.40); England’s Whitsbury Manor
Stud’s Showcasing (2.19); and Ireland’s Ballylinch Stud’s Lope de
Vega (1.95). That’s a pretty
impressive roster, and doesn’t even
include Super Saver (1.69, and
possibly the best sire of the lot with
three GI and two GII winners),
Blame (1.67), and Eskendereya
(1.66). Lookin At Lucky leads the
group with nine A Runners, followed
by Munnings and Showcasing (seven
each), and four sires with six each.
Given that he ranks 14th by A
Runner Index (1.32), it’s interesting
that Lane’s End’s Quality Road is the
leading F2012 NA-EU sire by ABC
Runners (22), and also ranks second
to Kantharos by ABC Index (1.82).
Munnings (20) edges out Lope de Vega (19) and Eskendereya
(18) for second spot by number of ABC Runners. Overall, you’d
really have to say this is a group which displays great promise,
though whether we can predict who will be the ‘breakthrough’
sires in another 12 month’s time is open to debate. There are at
least a dozen to be watching, the most expensive of which is
Super Saver, at $65,000 (and good value at that, I’ll wager). Click
here for the entire F2012 table.

Jon Siegel: A Historic Year in More Ways than One
The Thoroughbred industry has long been in need of a hero,
for a horse that transcends the sport. In 2015, we were treated
to a spoil of riches.
Many would presume I am referring to Horse of the Year and
Champion 3-Year-Old American Pharoah, the first Triple Crown
winner in 37 years. I am a huge fan of American Pharoah and all
that he has meant to the industry, but let's not forget about
Beholder. Somewhat overshadowed in the spotlight by
American Pharoah, Beholder enjoyed yet another sensational
campaign of her own in 2015, culminating with a third Eclipse
Award trophy.
The Spendthrift Farm colorbearer was a perfect five-for-five on
the year, capturing three Grade I races for trainer Richard
Mandella and jockey Gary Stevens. She dusted nine
accomplished male rivals with a breathtaking performance in
the 1 1/4-mile GI Pacific Classic, effortlessly striding home
8 1/4 lengths the best to become the first female winner of the
$1-million event. The winning margin in her first try at the
distance was the second-largest margin of victory in Pacific
Classic history. She also waltzed home a seven-length winner of
the GI Clement Hirsch S. at Del Mar and won the GI Zenyatta S.
at Santa Anita in hand by 3 1/4 lengths.
When she was crowned Eclipse Champion Older Dirt Female
Saturday night (receiving 256 of the 261 votes), Beholder
became the first female in history to win an Eclipse Award at
ages two, three and as an older mare, an elusive feat that sets
her apart from some of the greatest race mares that have ever
lived. Not even the brilliant Ruffian, Go For Wand,
Silverbulletday, Open Mind, Azeri and most recently Royal Delta,
Zenyatta or Rachel Alexandra sustained championship form for
that duration of time, beginning as a 2-year-old. In fact, the last
horse to win Eclipse Awards in the three different divisions was
Hall of Famer Spectacular Bid, a champion at two in 1978,
champion 3-year-old of 1979 and champion older horse and
Horse of the Year at four in 1980.
Beholder has already showcased just how truly special she is
with stirring displays of athleticism on the racetrack. The
nine-time Grade I winner is set for a return to the races this
season as she attempts to add to her storied legacy with a 2016
campaign. If the past is any indication and her early-season
performances live up to expectations, Beholder may get the
opportunity to defend her Pacific Classic crown and possibly
make a run at another Breeders’ Cup victory at year’s end.
While we can only imagine what the future holds, and we can’t
wait to find out, one thing is certain: Beholder’s legion of
adoring fans should behold this supremely talented racehorse as
she puts a bow on what has been a spectacular racing career,
one that squarely places her in the conversation of racing’s
all-time great race mares.

Unusual Heat. Sires of newly

Line, Oxbow, Point of Entry, Shackleford, Smiling Tiger and
Twirling Candy.
During last year=s sale, a total of 248 horses were reported as

Boot), offered in foal to Kodiak Kowboy; hip 301, a yearling colt
by War Chant--Primp (Bernardini); and hip 328, a filly by Gone

Monmouth Park to Host >Pick Your Prize= Handicapping Contest:
Monmouth Park will host a $2,000 live-money handicapping
contest that allows players to select their own prizes in 2016,
the track announced Tuesday. The event--the largest contest in
the Oceanport oval=s history--will be held Saturday, June 4 and
will offer a prize list consisting of nine seats in the 2017 National
Handicapping Championship (NHC), two seats in the 2016
Breeders= Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) and $50,000 cash,
based on the premise of 100 entries. The track will offer a
record 15 NHC seats should the number of contest entries reach
150.
AIn our continuing attempt to put on the best handicapping
contests in the country, we=re always listening to our players
and brainstorming new ideas,@ said Brian Skirka, Marketing
Manager and contest director at Monmouth Park. AOver the
years, I=ve heard players who prefer the NHC, players who
prefer the BCBC, and players who prefer cash. So this contest
will give the winners a choice as to which prize or prizes they
take home. These prizes will be among some of the best ever
awarded at an on-track handicapping contest.@
Over the past two years, Monmouth has awarded more seats
to the NHC than any other track. More information about
Monmouth=s contest schedule can be found by emailing Brian
Skirka at [email protected].

AMERICAN PHAROAH ISWORLD=S BEST
By Emma Berry
Following a unanimous vote to be named Eclipse Horse of the
Year in his home country, American Pharoah (Pioneerof the
Nile) gained worldwide recognition on Tuesday when named
Longines World=s Best Racehorse for 2015 at a ceremony in
central London.
As the name suggests, the rankings are a truly global affair and
that was reflected by the fact that horses from America,
England, France and Hong Kong filled the top six places on the
leader board. With his rating of 134, achieved when signing off
his magnificent career with a facile victory in the GI Breeders=
Cup Classic, Ahmed Zayat=s homebred Triple Crown winner was
ranked just one pound below the mighty Cigar to become the
second highest-rated American-based horse of all time. He was
the first U.S.-bred to top the world rankings since Curlin (Smart
Strike) in 2008.
>Team American Pharoah= appeared to be still on cloud nine
after the weekend=s Eclipse Awards. Ahmed Zayat, accompanied
by his family, the Baffert family and Victor Espinoza, said on
accepting the award from Longines Vice President and Head of
International Marketing, Juan-Carlos Capelli, ANot only was
American Pharoah brilliant on the racetrack, he connected with
everyone in America. We waited 37 years for a horse like him;
he was the people=s horse. Not only to win the Triple Crown but
now to be internationally recognised, this is just unreal. What a
privilege. We are truly humbled by this horse.@ cont. p2
>HAPPY= ON HONG KONG TRAIL Triple Group 1 winner Happy Trails (Aus) (Good Journey) could
get his first shot at racing overseas at age eight after trainer Paul
Beshara told Racing.com Sha Tin=s G1 QEII Cup Apr. 24 is a
target.
"This year we thought, >he's eight years of age, he's not going
to have much longer [racing],=@ Beshara told Racing.com's RSN.
AThey really love him in Hong Kong.@ Happy Trails has yet to win
at a Sydney autumn carnival, where notorious wet weather can
cause track conditions to play against his liking. "We thought we
could go to Sydney every year, but we just get flooded out,@
Beshara added. AHe can't run on the wet track, so we're really
considering Hong Kong."
Happy Trails is set to have a jump-out next Monday and a trial
before resuming in the G1 CF Orr S. Feb. 13. He was last seen
finishing eighth in the G1 Mackinnon S. on Halloween.
BILL OPPENHEIM: FIRST FOALS 2009-2012Columnist Bill Oppenheim continues his examination of 2015

American Pharoah is World=s Best cont. from p1
Trainer Bob Baffert, making his first visit to the UK, added,
ALast year was a fantastic year for racehorses so to be the best
in the world is quite something. There was no >woulda, coulda,
shoulda= with this horse. He checked every box and got better
and better as the year went on. He was so special.@
In a glorious year for the Classic generation and also for
owner-breeders, Anthony Oppenheimer=s Golden Horn (GB)
(Cape Cross {Ire}) was rated second-best on 130--a mark
achieved in both the G1 Investec Derby and G1 Coral-Eclipse S.--
making the John
Gosden-trained colt
the top of all
European gallopers
in 2015.
Oppenheimer said,
AThese awards are
fantastic and really
appreciated by all in
the horse world. To
Golden Horn and all
the people who
looked after him I say a big thank you. He=s now settling into his
new home at Darley and he=s in an even bigger box than
Dubawi, who is earning a bit more than him at the moment.@
Sharing third place in the rankings on 126 was France=s darling,
the dual G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe winner Treve (Fr)
(Motivator {GB}), and the late Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}),
the five-time Grade I winner who succumbed to colic in
December.
An emotional Janet Rome traveled to London on behalf of her
husband Jim to accept Shared Belief=s award, and said, AThank
you for honouring and celebrating the life of Shared Belief, the
little gelding who made us all think that anything was possible.
We=re all heartbroken to have lost this amazing warrior. We=ll
never get over it but in time we will get beyond it.@
The globe-trotting older horses Able Friend (Aus) (Shamardal)
and Solow (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) were ranked in equal fifth place,
with the Hong Kong star Able Friend gaining a mark of 125 in
both the G1 Queen=s Silver Jubilee Cup and the Premier Bowl H.,
while Solow=s high mark was posted in the G1 Dubai Turf at
Meydan.
The top-rated stayer of 2015 was G1 Irish St Leger winner
Order Of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on 124. The BHA=s Head
of Handicapping Phil Smith commented, AVery rarely do we get
stayers rated above 120 but this year we have two and they are
both 3-year-olds.@
Order Of St George is the highest-rated stayer ever trained by
Aidan O=Brien--ranked above even the multiple Ascot Gold Cup
winner Yeats who peaked at 122--while the Alain de Royer
Dupre-trained Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) was rated 120.
A rating of 123 for Sheikh Hamdan=s champion sprinter
Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) was Aa glowing vindication
for the creation of the Coronation Cup,@ according to
handicapper Dominic Gardiner-Hill. He added, AHe was one of
the highlights of the season. To have a 3-year-old sprinter of
that quality was great to see. He carried all before him and is the
highest rated 3-year-old sprinter since his sire Oasis Dream in
2003.@
Nigel Gray, Head of Handicapping and Race Planning for the
Hong Kong Jockey Club, singled out a horse who was ranked
joint-27th in the
world in 2015 but
has become a
household name for
most racing fans--the
veteran Cirrus Des
Aigles (Fr) (Even Top
{Ire}). He said,
ACirrus--and I=m sure
he wouldn=t mind me
calling him by his first
name--has been
involved in these
rankings for 3-year-olds and up for the last seven years and he is
a tremendous credit to his connections.@
Cirrus Des Aigles gained a mark of 121 for his victory in the
G1 Prix Ganay, equal to such as that posted by Al Kazeem (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}) when winning the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) when second to Shared Belief
in the San Antonio Invitational.

Longines World=s Best Racehorse cont.
As well as equine awards, the Longines ceremony included an
accolade for the world=s best horse race, which is judged from
the average handicap ratings in each race over the last three
years. The 2015 award went the way of Longchamp=s Qatar Prix
de l=Arc de Triomphe, with the last three fields having achieved
an average mark of 125.75, just ahead of the Breeders= Cup
Classic on 124.33.
The European Two-Year-Old Classifications were also revealed
on Tuesday, with the Aidan O=Brien-trained three-time Group 1
winner Air Force Blue (War Front) named as the champion
juvenile of 2015. The last time his mark of 124 was awarded to a
2-year-old was for subsequent Classic winner Dawn Approach
(Ire) (New Approach {Ire} in 2012, and only New Approach (Ire),
Frankel (GB) and Dream Ahead have bettered that mark with a
rating of 126.
Second-best, and the top juvenile in Britain, was Al Shaqab
Racing=s Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), his victories in the
G1 Darley Prix Morny and G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. earning
him a mark of 121.
The champion 2-year-old filly of 2015 was also trained at
Ballydoyle. In being awarded a rating of 120, Minding (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) became the first to exceed 119 since Six
Perfections (Fr) in 2002.
AMinding put up the best performance in the G1 Dubai Fillies=
Mile in the last 25 years,@ said BHA Senior Handicapper Matthew
Tester. AShe is a very worthy favourite for the 1000 Guineas.@
Baffert: >I was his trainer but also his fan= Bob Baffert admits he=s not a great fan of travelling, but even
in retirement American Pharoah continues to take his trainer to
places he never dreamed of going, including his first-ever visit to
England. Fresh from being lauded by his countrymen at the
Eclipse Awards in
Florida, Baffert, with
wife Jill and son
Bode, braved
subzero
temperatures in the
capital to attend the
Longines World=s
Best Racehorse
Ceremony.
AIt=s an honour, not
only to be the best
horse in the world,
but it=s incredible to be named ahead of all these great horses
like Shared Belief, Treve and Golden Horn,@ he said.
AI=ve never been to London, and when we got here I was so
impressed with the city. Jill, Bode and I were so excited. We=ve
only seen a little bit of the city and we=re not going to be here
for long but it=s almost like being in Disney World. You have all
these beautiful castles-- I=ve only really seen them on the show
The Tudors!@
Despite the showering of awards this week, Baffert confessed
to a little sadness at the culmination of the racing career of the
horse who ended America=s long wait for a Triple Crown Winner.
He reflected, AThere was a little bit of down time [after the
Breeders= Cup]. It was sort of sad that he wasn=t around. We
were used to having people there every day, coming to see him,
so when he left it was like sending your child away to school for
the next 20 years. I kept wondering, >Is he okay, does he miss
us?= We became so attached to him and there was a lot of
emptiness when we got back.@
He added, AWhen they turned for home in the Breeders= Cup
there was joy and also some sadness as I knew it was the last
time. I think the thing I really miss the most about him is that I
don=t get to see him breeze any more. Watching him breeze was
so special as he did things other horses didn=t.
AHe was such a kind animal--I showed him to everybody--so
many people touched that horse, it was incredible. I wanted to
share him with people. I was his trainer but I was also his fan.@

was last seen finishing
10th in a course-and-

Master Kochanwong led them away from the stalls and set a
decent pace from the two path as second choice Pablosky (Ire)
(Mastercraftsman {Ire}) prompted from the inside. Those two
had it between them entering the final furlong and Master
Kochanwong found extra late to prevail by two lengths (video).
The victory came in spite of a deteriorating breathing condition.
“He is one of the gutsiest, most determined horses I’ve ever
ridden,” winning jockey Douglas Whyte told South China
Morning Post. “The runner-up had a softer run than I did, and
we were giving him [eight pounds] and my horse just knuckled
down. He is just a little bulldog, that’s what he is.” With few
options at home, trainer David Hall is left to contemplate a start
in a race like the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Mar. 26.
“Taking a horse away with that sort of a problem is a little bit
risky but I suppose I’m going to have to talk to the owners about
it because what else can you do?” Hall told SCMP.
