2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter From John C. Brearley

About a year ago, when we began a capital campaign to build the next phase of the Grissom Campus, we knew that the effort would take time. In fact, anything worth doing usually takes time and effort. That notion of life is especially true in the church. While we do not always move quickly, we generally move in good directions. For the latter we can be most thankful! Today I can tell you that we are almost there. We have almost reached the financial threshold that makes this next phase possible. We are so close that we can feel the momentum. The numbers tell the exciting story. Toward a total goal of 11 million dollars, we are now within two million of reaching the finish line. We are within 20% of being able to accomplish a feat that has been many years in the making—putting our congregation once again on one campus… one that will serve us for generations to come… one that will allow us to serve Christ more effectively in this community. There were two original goals of this campaign that have remained consistent. The first was to build enough of the Grissom Campus to allow us to move all of our activities there. While we will not complete the entire campus in this current phase, we will build everything we need for the foreseeable future. This phase includes a sanctuary (800 seating capacity) and enough support space (music facility, classrooms, office space, etc.) to meet our needs. Secondly, the goal from the beginning was to build spaces appropriately sized to fit our mission, both now and in the future. We will make sure that this phase includes rooms that are adequate for current and expanded programs. If not too small and not too big, it would be by definition, just right! We have worked hard to this end. The construction and architectural teams are waiting on us for the final budget. Now is the time to finish strong. Undergirding the last two million needed is the immediate challenge, and the only one left! If you have not yet made your pledge to this campaign, please consider doing so now. If you can increase you financial commitment to this cause, you will be offering a special blessing. If you are planning to leave part of your estate to the church, you may want to consider giving a portion now, in your lifetime. Trusting God to provide for tomorrow allows us to be generous today. What we do this month will reap amazing rewards, for us and for many others. This Annual Report includes for the first time ever, an electronic pledge card for a capital campaign. All you need to do is click on this link www.myrtlebeachpresbyterianchurch.org/building-pledge.cfm, fill out the card, and hit submit. Your much appreciated response will go directly and confidentially to our Financial Administrator, Diana Farrell. And this Annual Report includes, for the last time in a long, long time, a call to use our resources for this purpose. From where I sit, this is the final push. What we build in the future will likely be built a small piece at a time. May we be found faithful now to the God from whom all blessings flow…

Peace, John

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

What FPC Means to Me

God extremely blessed me the day He chose my parents. They took me to church and Sunday School from the minute I was born, and they constantly taught me about Jesus throughout the entire time I lived with them. I believe being raised in the faith set in motion my desire to take my kids to church and Sunday School on a regular basis when I became a parent.

When I met my husband, Duke Melton, we discussed where we wanted to attend church. I grew up going to First Baptist of Myrtle Beach, and he had always attended First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach. However, he had always been super active in the youth group at First Presbyterian Church. He felt very strongly about us attending First Presbyterian Church, and I agreed to go wherever he thought we would GO every Sunday.

We joined FPC over 10 years ago and God could not have guided us better. What a blessing! We have three children, Jaxson (11), Carson (10) and Ellison (4). We have taken them to FPC since they were born and they love our church as much as we do. This church has always been awesome the entire time we have been members! From the Sunday School programs, the worship services on Sundays, the smiling faces, the Happy Birthday and get-well-soon telephone calls, and the outreach programs. The most amazing and special thing about FPC is how they reached out to my family during a crisis!!!!

When we discovered that we were expecting our third child, Ellison, we found out in the middle of the pregnancy that Ellison would have severe Cleft Lip and Palate. We were DEVASTATED!! We finally were getting a little girl, but she was going to have some issues that would require surgical intervention once she arrived. We met with the amazing craniofacial surgeons at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC (MUSC) immediately, and implemented a surgical plan to repair the craniofacial deformities. We did ask, “God, WHY?” But HE had a greater plan as He always does! Seven weeks after our precious little girl was born she exhibited symptoms of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, “AML.” We were devastated once AGAIN! We were informed we would have to live in the hospital at MUSC for the next year to aggressively treat the blood cancer. Our world was turned upside down! But God was working a miracle, taking the bold focus off of her cleft lip and palate and telling us that that was small potatoes. We needed to trust HIM to the bigger issue of the cancer. We did a round of chemotherapy and with God’s grace Ellison went right into remission. The doctor’s blood-typed our immediate family for a bone marrow transplant match and our middle son, Carson, was the perfect 100%match. She underwent a bone marrow transplant on October 19, 2011. She has been AMAZINGLY healthy ever since. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

The entire year we spent at MUSC, FPC prayed for Ellison endlessly, had prayer quilts knitted for her, they provided fundraising events for her, meals were provided for Duke and the boys that stayed home in Myrtle Beach, and they constantly checked in with us to see if we needed anything!

FPC, over these years has been AMAZING! Not to mention, The Growing Tree that all three of my children have attended and have had amazingly, wonderful experiences! I am so thankful every single time I hear the kids sing at the year-end program the precious song: “I am the church, You are the church, We are the church together”, “All who follow Jesus, All around the world, Yes We’re the Church together; The Church is not a building, the Church’s not a steeple, the Church is not a resting place the Church is the People! Our family would be lacking in so many ways without the love and support of FPC! We are stronger believers of Christ thanks to FPC!

In HIS Love, Ashley Melton

Significant Events LOGOS, our midweek ministry for 1-5 graders, continues to be a consistent bright spot of fellowship, Bible study, music and choir, crafts, games and growing as Children of God. LOGOS ministry reaches beyond our walls, bringing children and families into our church and taking our church into the community.

Intergenerational relationships are at the heart of LOGOS, weaving children, youth and adults into a church family that carries into all aspects of our church and the community.

Monthly mission projects are done in Crafts, allowing the children to share their gifts and God’s love with others. Our first project was collecting paper products that were then packaged in bags that the children decorated. The bags were then delivered to the senior citizens center.

The children of LOGOS created Christmas cards to distribute to senior citizen centers throughout Horry County.

The choirs of LOGOS held our seventh annual Christmas Carol-In after dinner on December 9, singing carols to all who joined us via the web. Parents, grandparents and church family joined us in the sanctuary as we sang and worshipped.

The choirs of LOGOS went caroling on December 16 at Eagle’s Crest. All present enjoyed the children sing-ing Christmas songs. Definitely a positive experience for all generations!

The Sunshine Choir (grades 1-2) and Chorister Choir (grades 3-5) serve as musical leaders in worship once a month.

The Sunshine and Chorister Choirs presented the musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at both worship services on March 22.

Hymnals were presented to 5th grade choristers, and pewter Chorister Crosses to first time participants in the Chorister Choir.

During winter semester, LOGOS hosts the K-Club for FPC Kindergartners, facilitated by volunteers, parents and youth, as an introduction into LOGOS.

We had “teacher night” in January. Children were invited to bring a teacher to LOGOS dinner. The teachers were introduced and enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner.

Each week, volunteers prepare delicious and healthy suppers for the LOGOS folks during Table Time, our “practice arena” for all we learn. We eat family-style, eight to a table, two adults from the congregation and six children, laughing and sharing as we break bread together.

We held a LOGOS Encounter training seminar on November 7, facilitated by Suzie Lane of GenOn Ministries and attended by 17 church members and clergy.

We formed a LOGOS task force charged with overseeing and nurturing the LOGOS program.

The Joyful Noise Singers, made up of three, four and five year olds, continued to come together and sing songs

for a portion of the Sunday School hour. We participated in the 5:00 Christmas Eve Service. We shared songs on Mother’s Day and one other Sunday during the year.

The three, four and five year olds were treated to “An Angelic Afternoon” during the Christmas season. Crafts, story time, snacks and special “heavenly” visitors made for a joyful afternoon.

The 4th & 5th graders’ Annual Lock-In, Held on the last Friday in the month of February, was changed to a Lock-Out with movies, pizza and games with dismissal at 10:00pm.

Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2015 upheld our tradition of a highly anticipated, fully-packed, and much celebrated successful week of worship and story, crafts, games, music and fun. With our participant count maxing out at ninety preschoolers, over eighty 1st through 4th graders, a dozen 5th graders in

Crossover, led by many youth and adult volunteers, our G_Force was a huge success! We took a summer sabbatical for all Sunday School classes and instituted a rotation model in the fall. The rota-

tion consists of a puppet play, a movie and a craft project. We added Sunshine and Chorister Choir practice on Sunday mornings starting in September from 9:45 to 10:05

and Joyful Noise Choir practice from 10:10 to 10:30. This was very well received! After many years of service, Linda Downes retired in March 2015. After many years of service, Marion Shelton retired in May 2015. In September we welcomed Skip Yingling as Director of Children, Youth & Handbells. The Children’s Church Ministry serves our youngest worshippers, those in 3-year old preschool through second

grade. Church members volunteer to work as partners, upholding our Child Protection Policies, to lead during our Sunday worship services once each quarter. As in “big church,” we have a call to worship, we have an acolyte light the candles, we take up offering, we hear scriptures read and a message shared and prayers spoken. Stories are told, crafts made, games played, snacks enjoyed, and friends reunited, week after week. The children learn that there is a time for Worship and respectful listening, and there is a time for reflection, response and sharing. Most importantly, they learn that God loves them and at FPC, they are loved, welcomed and important.

Focus for 2016:

Continuing to follow God’s call to share The Good News while polishing all we offer to be the best it can be.

Long Term Dreams Implementing new and exciting ideas with our new associate to get more families committed to First

Presbyterian Church and what we as a church family have to offer them so that they and their children can grow in their faith together.

Significant Events: In March the Spring the Chorister Choir led Sunday morning worship by presenting the musical, “Joseph and

the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. The Youth Choir and Youth Handbell Choir, upon invitation, led worship at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

The Youth Choir from MPPC then joined with our Youth Choir as part of the now annual joining of our musical youth.

Youth-Led worship for Early Sabbath and both Sunday services in late January and early February. A creative worship service led entirely by our youth: Youth Choir, Youth Handbell Choirs, Youth band, liturgical dance, ushers, greeters, and message by seniors…outstanding!

The October Heritage Sunday services include additional banners, guest musicians, FPC combined choirs. All of this musical effort helps to make this an outstanding annual worship experience!

For the season of Advent both our adult handbell and youth handbell choirs participated in outreach efforts representing First Presbyterian Church. The Chancel Ringers were filmed playing Christmas music for the HTC Channel TV Show, “Inside Out”. The episode aired throughout the month of December and the video footage has been posted on the church website. The Bells Angels Choir provided music for the Christmas Lighting of the Landing event at Barefoot Landing.

The annual Lovefeast Festival of Light worship, always well attended, and musically, one of the best! Chancel Choir, Youth Choir, Youth Handbells, and instrumentalists always makes this one of the favorites of the

congregation. The Sunshine & Chorister Choirs (elementary-age) were joined by the Joyful Noise Singers (preschoolers) in

leading worship on Christmas Eve with children and youth readers. Later in the evening at the 9:00 PM, the third annual Christmas Eve Service with music led by the Youth and Alumni Choir, Handbell Choir, and

instrumentalists...a tradition to continue!

Focus for 2016: Continue musical excellence that enhances our goal of providing an exceptional worship experience. Continue to explore opportunities for musicians to serve by sharing their musical gifts beyond the walls of FPC. Continue “partnership” between youth choirs at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and FPC Continuation and expansion of a newly-formed middle school handbell ensemble: Ringerific Bells Introduce handbell ringing and techniques to the Chorister Choir. Continue conversations about new styles of worship. Hope to expand and continue the community outreach effort.

Congregational Care: The Board of Deacons

Purpose: To provide lay pastoral care and nurture to members of the congregation.

May 2015 to April 2016 Leadership: John Neely, Moderator Georgiana Keller, Vice Moderator Sherie Roy, Secretary Rev. Christa Brewer, pastor liaison to the Deacons

Significant Events: Continued to provide members of the congregation care through Shepherd Groups, with extra care given to

members in times of grief, illness, or other needs. Development of a New Member Ministry Team that will focus on providing extra care to our new members

in their first 6-12 months of membership. Prepared a list of members in our church who need home communion due to inability to come to church. Encouraged Deacons to sign up to participate with the Visiting Volunteers and Lend-A-Hand Ministries as

ways to involve themselves in a ministry team of the church.

Focus for 2016: The New Member Ministry Team seeks to pair all incoming members with ‘sponsors’ in the congregation

who will befriend them and help them integrate into church life. The New Member Ministry Team seeks to hold two luncheons a year for our newest members, their Dea-

cons, and their sponsors. The first is to be held in April. To create a master list of who needs home communion, how often they would like it, and who will serve

them, and to more regularly provide this ministry to our homebound members. New geographic flocks have been created that will be effective May 1, 2016. There will be 48 flocks and 12

“zones” made up of four adjoining flocks. The Deacons in their respective zones will provide back-up Dea-con assistance when a Deacon is out-of-town or otherwise unable to respond to needs in their flocks.

Mission Ministry

Purpose: To inform and involve the members of the First Presbyterian Church in the global mission of the Presbyterian Church

(USA) and to bring new disciples to Jesus Christ in our community, our state, nation, and world.

Current Leadership: Suzanne Belden , Moderator Sue Cranford Ashley Gentry Cam Thomas, Staff Helen Lazarus Karen Madert Delaine Mann Cathy Oliver Caren Whittier

FPC is engaged in mission both locally and globally; here’s how:

Local Mission A group of committed volunteers from this congregation prepare food and serve close to 100 guests of Street Reach Mission each Wednesday night all year long, 7800 meals over the course of a year! FPC is the only provider serving a meal every week of the year! We continue to collect a record number of coats and items of clothing, toys, and canned goods to benefit local helping agencies such as Helping Hand, Community Kitchen, Hope House of MB, Street Reach, Racepath Community Center, and New Directions of Horry County as well as providing workers for each of the agencies listed through volunteers from our church. We hope to be able to create a thrift store/clothing closet in the years to come to properly house the generous donations of clothing for men, women, and children, toys, and housewares.

Operation Christmas Operation Christmas is a program co-sponsored by the mission and youth ministry teams. FPC provided for close to 200 children whose families would not have had Christmas gifts otherwise. This is the 6th year we have invited families to come and shop the FPC store for toys and clothing for their children. While the parents/guardians shopped and wrapped, their children were entertained by volunteers along with students from the church with Christmas cookies, movies, and crafts. When the program was finished, the store was opened to those in need in the community and the remaining inventory of clothing, toys, and Bibles were given away. As well, we were blessed with the opportunity to take students from MBHS who are homeless or unaccompanied by their parents (parentless) shopping for clothes and other items at Wal-Mart during the Christmas season. Leadership for Operation Christmas included: Suzanne Belden (Elder), Sarah Benton, Cam Thomas (staff), Helen Lazarus, Christina Lazarus, Ashley Gentry, Lauren Brearley, Kim Yingling, Mary Goodnight Thomas, Melanie Doty.

Beach Castles

Beach Castles is a summer mission program inviting students from all over to come and serve in the Myrtle Beach area. Last year, FPC hosted some 100+ students over the course of the summer. Staying at the Kings campus, students completed home repair and simple construction projects in the Racepath/Myrtle Beach area to benefit those unable to complete the work themselves due to financial or physical limitations. Students who are old enough are given the opportunity to work on a Habitat site. This program has incredible potential as we move forward. Each Christmas Eve, FPC collects an offering to benefit Habitat for Humanity. As a result of this collection, we are working with HfH to build houses for those in need.

Beach Castles South Beach Castles South is the name of our mission partnership with the Bahamas Youth Network under that leadership of Gabe, Jan, and Grace Swing on Long Island, Bahamas. The latter part of 2015 was spent planning, recruiting, and organizing missionaries to go to Long Island March 28 – April 2, 2016. We give thanks for grants toward this effort awarded to us by the Chapin Foundation and the Presbytery of New Harmony.

This year, FPC has made strides to strengthen our budget to allow more additional mission efforts locally, domestically and internationally! With your help, that trend will continue in years to come.

Worship and Music Ministry Purpose: To provide excellent worship services that are meaningful and transforming for the members and guests of First Presbyterian Church who worship as we seek together to become channels of God’s Redeeming love in the world.

Leadership: Barbara Peterson, Moderator Dr. John C. Brearley, Sr. Minister Rev. Cameron W. Thomas, Associate Pastor, Youth & Missions Rev. Christa R. Brewer, Associate Pastor Rev. Judith L Cettei, Parish Associate Dr. Howard Hansen, Parish Associate Brown Bradley, Dir. Of Children’s Music, Handbell Choirs & Early Sabbath Music Carolyn McKittrick, (Early Sabbath Communion prep, flowers & weddings, etc.) Mary Gene Singleton (Love Feast chairman, dramas) Significant Events: Chancel Choir, composed of 50 dedicated and talented singers, provide music for Sunday worship services

and special services such as the annual Lovefeast, Heritage Sunday, Jazz Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Ash Wednesday and Christmas Eve.

Children & Youth Music, directed by Skip Yingling, has presented wonderful music, including three choirs, and adult , and youth bell ringers.

Lovefeast, always a favorite service and coordinated by Mary Gene Singleton, was a great success. New coffee pots were purchased and detailed organizational directions are on file.

Live Nativity, organized by Cam Thomas was well received in the congregation as well by the community. Early Sabbath worship - The numbers at the Thursday night service held at 6:00 PM increased last year.

Communion is served once a month at this service. Skip Yingling has worked hard to provide wonderful music during this service. Youth Handbell and Youth choirs continue to exchange services with Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and

their Youth Choir and Youth Handbell Choir. Focus for 2016: Possibly increase the number of times per year that communion is served at the Sunday services. Every other month has been suggested. Continue to keep records of all of the events that take place during the year. This will be a big help for the

chairman of the events that tend to repeat throughout the year. Possibly include a contemporary Sunday service to meet the needs of a wider range of worshipers. Look at the possibility of replacing the Friendship pads once we know we are relocating to the new Sanctuary.

Annual Report: Letter From Jeanne Herst & FPC Staff 2015

What FPC Means to Me

My family has been enjoying Myrtle Beach vacation holidays since the 1960’s. Our getaways always included worshiping at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. We officially became “snowbirds” in the 1990’s when my husband, a Presbyterian minister, retired and our week at the beach grew into a three month stay. We always felt so at home in your midst. Brown Bradley warmly welcomed me into the choir and often invites me to play my violin during worship.

Bob and I always felt the presence of the Lord in this place, but never more keenly than during his illness and death. The compassionate care of this congregation sustained us both during this challenging time. There were visits and phone calls from the ministers. There were flowers, cards and phone calls from our Myrtle Beach church family, our Deacon, and the choir members. During the difficult days following Bob’s death, you lifted me in love and supported me in prayer. I want you to know how very much this meant to me.

This year, now that I am alone, people in the congregation whom I didn't really know have reached out to me in numerous ways that have amazed and comforted me. I wish to say with all of my heart that FPC Myrtle Beach has been my sustaining grace in these days of grief and healing. It is more than a home away from home. It is the rock that has supported and sustained me in life and in death. Thanks be to God for FPC and its ministry here in Myrtle Beach where love really does make the difference. With my dearest love and deepest gratitude, Jeanne Herst Affiliate Member
