First Sunday of Advent

The First Sunday of Advent not only inaugurates a new Liturgical Year but also shifts our focus to a different Gospel. This year we will focus on the Gospel of St. Mark. Mark’s Gospel while the shortest of the four evangelical texts turns our attention to Jesus as the suffering servant. What do these two words mean and how do they apply to our reflection on the Season of Advent? The word suffering comes from the repeated theme of persecution that is predominant in the Gospel, especially in the triple prediction of the Passion that serves as a turning point of the focus of the Gospel from Jesus’ ministry in Galilee to the events of the Passion, Death and Resurrection that take place in Jerusalem. It is from this theme that the notion of servant also develops, as Jesus shows how complete and unselfish obedience to the God’s will makes him the servant of all. It is in this context that we turn our attention to the readings of Advent.

The First Sunday of Advent draws our attention to the urgency of recognizing what we are called to this season: To prepare ourselves both internally (through prayer and sacramental confession) and externally (through good works and recognition of

those less fortunate in our midst) for the coming feasts ahead. To be alert – this means that we should take stock of our spiritual exercises - and if they are lacking or not up to speed, let this season be

an opportunity to give ourselves a “B12” shot of spirituality. To heed the call of the servant – WATCH. How do we do this? Again, we look within ourselves and ask a real question – after all of the

“B12” shots…..what is still missing? As Padre Pio writes, “I seem to be searching continually for something I cannot find and even I myself do now know what I seek.” If Advent has found you ‘watching and waiting’ but still feeling like this, maybe this short prayer will help as we begin the Advent journey together as a parish community: Come to me, O infinite God, as I begin my Advent journey. Send me your Holy Spirit that I may have the desire to seek you, the courage to knock on the doorway that opens upon the road to Bethlehem, and the willingness to ask for what I need along the way, Amen.

Remember – don’t exhaust yourself trying to find outside of yourself those qualities which are within you – Jesus is with us, He is yours and mine, and nobody can take Him away from us unless we allow it to happen! A blessed beginning of Advent! Fr. JP
