But even so, in the name of God, what on
earth do Blackburn Rovers think theyre
playing at? Sacking their third manager of
the season, and this after Appleton had been
in charge for a mere 15 games after they
went out of their way to pay hefty compen-
sation to Blackpool to pry him away from
there. No, the points were not exactly rolling
in for Rovers, but then again, they were not
precisely in the rudest of health when he got
there were they? Theyd been relegated, had
nally sacked Steve Kean who was about as
popular at Ewood Park as Sir Alex Ferguson
wearing a Burnley shirt, went through the
great Henning Berg sadness (one win in ten)
and were plummeting down the table.
If you are into management speak dont
worry if you are, help is available then the
rst great lesson you are taught if you are an
organisation that is in a hole is simple - stop
digging. It appears that the management es-
tablishment that the Venkys frequented of-
fered up a rather more revolutionary school
of thinking, bordering upon chaos theory
employ a squadron of JCBs, tear everything
down, create huge craters and see what even-tually crawls out of the evolutionary soup.
If nothing else, its an idiosyncratic and in-
novative approach, one that, in comparison,
Chelsea have barely toyed with. Blackburn,
on the other hand, have embraced it to the
full, clasped it to the corporate bosom and
are lustily squeezing the life out of it and,
it appears, the club.
In most cases, in such circumstances a little
stability goes a long way. Too much has hap-
pened at Blackburn in too short a space of
time for anybody to really get a handle on
what is going on at the club. Certainly 15
games is too short a time to turn around a
ship that is going full steam ahead in the di-
rection of that shiny iceberg over there.
And even if you think the incumbent isnt
up to the job, given that Blackburn quickly
concluded the same about the last two ap-
pointees in pretty short order, then why
would anybody believe that they can go and
appoint the right man next time? And if you
were that right man for the job, why would
you be in any hurry to take up a position at
a club knowing that you probably have a
dozen games at best to work a miracle be-
fore a P45 appears in the in tray unless you
fancy getting your hands on a nice severance
package?
We might also level the charge of being care-ful what you wish for at a collection of sup-
porters who were desperate to hound Steve
Kean from their door. They might well have
been better off to be patient with him, though
clearly, this not something that any football
fan is good at, whatever their persuasion.
Again though, the way in which Kean wastreated might well give any potential boss
a little pause for thought before inking an
Ewood Park contract.
It is very difcult to see just where Black-
burn go from here, other than in a swift
downwards direction. While some try to
argue that they have a decent playing staff,
their performances under the last three man-
agers would suggest otherwise because those
players are regularly losing games. There are
clearly some underlying problems in that
dressing room which need addressing, and
that cannot be done overnight. Nor can they
be dealt with by a manager lacking in author-
ity and, after Appletons sacking, no manag-
er can have any authority there because its
unlikely that theyll be there long enough to
turn the monthly calendar over.
The irony is that in Appleton, they had the
kind of manager willing to take hard deci-
sions head on and who, given time, had the
right kind of character to make the necessary
changes to the playing squad, its quality and
its attitude. Its true that his swift move from
Blackpool did his reputation few favours and
the level of sympathy that exists towards him
after this sacking is commensurately lower as
a consequence but he will doubtless return to
the fray elsewhere in due course and, should
he succeed, then the Venkys will only be leftwith egg on their collective face.

In the interests of full disclosure, let us make it clear that Michael Appleton andDarren Moore are among friends here. Both have constructed healthy reputa-
tions over years of hard toil and both will receive the heartiest of recommenda-
tions about their credentials as top footballing men who have much to offer the
game. This will not, therefore, be a wholly unbiased view.

Real Madrid boss Jose
Mourinho is denying
reports that he has
reached an agreement
with club president
Florentino Perez to de-
part the club.
I have no agreement with
Real Madrid to go. I have
signed nothing, thats a nonsense, Mourinho told
RTP.
The criticism? Nothing affects me, nothing both-
ers me. I do not go crazy nor do I get depressed.
Nothing motivates me more than my own motiva-
tion.
Mourinho also had some choice words for FIFA
after he recently snubbed their gala night and vot-
ing ceremony.
I dont regret not attending the
gala at all, he said.
One, two or three people
phoned me to tell me that they
had voted for me and later, when
the list of votes was published,
another name appeared by their
votes. That was why I decided
not to go to the gala.
Im accusing FIFA of irregularities in the vote for
best manager in the world. There was a lack of
transparency. FIFA was aware of these irregulari-
ties, knowing they were there, but did nothing to
avoid them.
FIFA denied Mourinhos claims.

St. Mirren clinched their rst
ever League Cup trophy with a
3-2 victory over Hearts at an at-
mospheric Hampden Park.
For 26 years the club and fans had beenstarved of national competition success
but on Sunday Jim Goodwin became the
rst St Mirren captain since Billy Aber-
cromby back in 1987 to lift silverware at
the National Stadium.
Scotland international Gary Teale told the
Daily Record that the win was his nest
moment in football.
Ive been fortunate enough to play when
we beat France at Hampden, which was
an incredible moment, but to come here
with one of the smaller clubs in Scotland
and to actually win a trophy is incredibleand probably eclipses what I have done
before.
To achieve something with one of the
smaller clubs, and to beat Celtic in the
semi-nal and winning the cup now, it
eclipses anything I have done.
Englands number
one goalkeeper
Joe Hart has ad-
mitted to not be-
ing at his best this
season, but he is
promising to put
that right for the
upcoming Eng-
land matches.
It has not been brilliant
but that is football, stuff
gets said, Hart told
the BBC. That is fair
enough. But Ill always
come out ghting,
Hart helped Manchester
City to their 2012 EPL
title but concedes that
things have been tough-er this time round.
It has not been last sea-
son, it has been tough.
We are not in a position
we want to be in, but we
will remain focused and
remain hard on the case
of what we need to do.
Fridays World Cup op-
ponents, San Marino
are ranked 207th in the
FIFA rankings and have
not scored in a competi-
tive game since 2008,
but Hart is not relaxing.
I have just checked
up to see if someone
had scored against
them recently, but they
havent, he joked.
Someone is going to
concede against them,
and hopefully if I am
playing, it will not be
me.
But the main focus of
the game is to win. It is
more important for the
group [to win] rather
than me looking silly.
England come into the
World Cup qualify-
ing double header two
points behind group H
leaders Montenegro,

Chelsea moved up to third place in
the EPL with their win over West
Ham United in Sundays London
derby that also produced Frank
lompards 200th goal for Chelsea,
leaving him just two goals shy of the
clubs all-time scoring record, held
by Bobby Tambling.
Lampard scored his goal at the end wherethe away fans were sitting. He celebratedwith substitute John Terry, who was warm-ing up in that section of the ground, as ob-jects were thrown from the crowd in theirdirection.
It was a good game, a great results, Frankscored his 200th, the team is third so its agreat week and a good moment for us, en-thused Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez.
It is a long race, we have to carry on andwin our next game and see what othersdo.
In the rst half, we could have scoredtwo or three goals. You have to be pleasedbecause we scored two goals and kept aclean sheet. We have to be a little disap-
pointed because we could have nished itearlier.
Demba Ba is a great nisher and today itwas not his day.We will approach it one game at a time.We have to relax now and not get any inju-ries after the international break.
LAMPARD CLOSING IN ON RECORDUNCOMMON GOAL FOR COMMONSThree-one down with
alf an hour to play,
Celtic pulled off a
mighty comeback
gainst Aberdeen with
econd half goals from
Charlie Mulgrew,
Gary Hooper and
Georgios Samaras to
linch a 4-3 victory at
arkhead.
ris Commons had given
eltic a 1st minute lead, si-
multaniously breaking the
ecord for fastest ever SPL
oal at 12.2 seconds, but
cott Vernon equalized for
berdeen just before half-
me. A Josh Magennis brace
arly in the second half
ooked to have secured the
oints for Aberdeen until the late rally by the
oops.
It was crazy, said Commons of his record-
reaking goal. First of all, Mikael played it
p front, Hoops got a ick on, I found myself
n space on the edge of the box and Stokseylayed a great ball through to me.
I took one touch and smashed it in. It was
ne of those crazy things that usually never
appen, I dont think half the fans were even
in the stands yet. The manager wasnt even in
the dugout so it was a bit of whirlwind.
Aberdeen hadnt touched the ball yet but we
play that way from kick-off, we go forward
and try and put them under pressure in the
opening couple of minutes. But for it all to
fall into play and for me to have a shot on theedge of the 18-yard box was crazy luck.
It beat Stokseys record. He was telling me
afterwards that he was sure Id beat him so I
think hes a little bit wounded now.
Rep of Ireland international KevinDoyle was not bet pleased to learnthat he was dropped from the squadfor the upcoming World Cup quali-ers..by text.
I was very disappointed to come in af-ter the game to a text message saying Iwasnt to travel to Ireland to join up withthe squad, Doyle said on his clubs ofcialwebsite. I have been in every squad whenI have been t for seven-and-a-half yearsso it was disappointing.
I thought I might get a phone call but itwasnt to be and I havent spoken to themanager about it. Maybe he will speak tome about it in the future and for now I justhave to get on with it.
It was disappointing to get the text mes-sage telling me not to travel particularly af-ter such a good game with Wolves [the 2-1victory over Bristol City] and you quicklygo from one extreme to another.

For people of a certain age,
the 1970 World Cup is per-
haps the most vividly re-
membered.
t had pretty much everything BobbyMoores arrest, Gordon Banks extraordi-nary save and subsequent food poisoninghat cost England their quarter-nal, perhaps
he single most thrilling knock-out gameever between West Germany and Italy, prob-ably the greatest team weve ever seen inhe Brazilians and, on top of it all, colourelevision coverage of all the games for the
rst time so that, even if you didnt see itn colour then, subsequent viewings of it arencredibly vivid, simmering football in thehimmering heat, those vivid canary yellow
Brazilian shirts in particular dancing acrosshe Mexican turf, weaving bewildering pat-ers that no team could live with.
The irony is that had Pele gone through withhis post 66 threat never to play in a WorldCup again after the treatment meted out tohim in 62 and, especially, 66, it might havebeen a rather more mundane tournament.
Echoes of 66 resounded trough qualica-ion, not least in Italy where the North Korea
debacle remained potent in the public mind. They had to avoid defeat in their nal gamen Naples, against East Germany Wales al-eady eliminated in a three team group to
progress and a 3-0 win suggested an Italianide that was a little less cautious than its cat-
enaccio predecessors. Northern Ireland wereousted when the Soviet Union beat Turkeyo win their three team group at the eleventh
hour while Scotland were, as became habit, umped into a group of death, West Germanyrampling all comers into the dirt, winning
ve and drawing one, at Hampden whenBobby Murdoch found a late equaliser tonullify Gerd Mullers rst half goal.
Romania edged a tough group, going throughcourtesy of a 1-1 draw with Greece in Bucha-est, the Czechs beat Hungary 4-1 in a play-
off after they had dominated a group includ-ng Ireland, while Sweden proved too goodor France after they had slipped to a shock
home defeat to Norway in Strasbourg.
Belgium and Bulgaria rounded out the Euro-pean qualiers along with holders England.
While Brazil and Uruguay came throughas expected in South America, there was ashock when Argentina nished bottom of athree team group, Peru dominating mattersand clinching qualication with a 2-2 drawin Buenos Aires. With Mexico through ashosts, the CONCACAF slot was up for grabsfor a change, El Salvador coming through acomplex qualication to secure a rst WorldCup appearance. From Africa, Moroccoemerged as qualiers while Israel qualiedfrom the Asia / Oceania section, aided by
North Koreas refusal to play there, both Is-rael and Morocco also making a World Cupdebut.
England were looked on as tournamentfavourites, little wonder given that, if any-thing, the team was even better than theclass of 66. There were efforts to destabi-lise them such as the trumped up arrest of
Bobby Moore in Bogota on Englands wayto the nals, but England did little to helpthemselves. Suspicious about everything,Alf Ramsey insisted the team take their ownfood with them. This included taking gallonsof orange juice with them. To Mexico. Nowonder the locals hated them.
England were good, very good, but they weregrouped with Brazil, the only team in theirclass, something they illustrated in a 4-1 de-molition of the Czechs as England squeezedpast Romania, 1-0. Brazil and England metin Guadalajara in a classic game of footballthat had everything including that astonish-
ing save by Banks from Peles header, Bob-by Moore giving perhaps the best defensiveperformance ever witnessed, Brazil playingwith astonishing uidity, pace and guile. Inthe end, that was just enough and Jairzinhofound a winner on his way to creating a re-cord by scoring in every game of the tourna-ment. Pele and Moore swapped shirts at theend and said they would meet again in the
nal, but defeat meant England had to beatthe Czechs to go through. They did so ef-ciently if unimpressively, a Clarke penaltyseparating the sides.
Second place in the group meant a meetingwith the group four winners. That meantWest Germany who secured top spot bywinning their last game against Peru, GerdMuller scoring a second hat-trick in consec-utive games as the South Americans weredefeated 3-1, but still qualied as runners-up.
In the other half of the draw, local honour
was satised as Mexico came through asrunners-up to the Soviet Union and Italyreverted to type, winning their group whilescoring just one goal, enough to beat Swe-den, Uruguay coming through with them.
The big game in the quarter-nals was, in-evitably, England versus West Germany, arepeat of the 1966 World Cup Final. With

s Peter Osgood pointed out, We all ate andank exactly the same things, so to this daym convinced somebody in the hotel got atordon Banks to make him ill. In the run-upthe game, Ramsey was desperate to ensure
anks would play and even put him through arcical tness test where the ability to standp straight was virtually the only tness crite-a. Banks was initially named in the side, buturing the team meeting before the game, heccumbed to illness again and Peter Bonettiepped into the breach. Despite these disrup-ons, England started well, though it was clearat the Germans were the better suited to the
conditions, passing the ball crisply while Eng-land ran and ran. That running saw Englandto a two goal lead after fty minutes of play
and an apparently serene passage to the semi-nals.
It was as well they had that cushion, for asPeter Thompson says, the team were tiring: Iwas in the stand and at half time I was soakedto the skin. I went down at half-time and theywere totally exhausted. Another ve minutesand theyd have been asleep. On the hour,West Germany had to gamble and made a sub-stitution, to Thompsons distress: Criticismonly comes from results. But to ask the full-backs to do twojobs, to defend and to keep joining in the at-
tack, was too much, it was too hot. By the timeGrabowski got on, Terry Cooper could hardlywalk. Id have fancied playing against himthen. Exploiting the space left by the aggingCooper on 68 minutes, Beckenbauer drove outto Englands left and pushed a cross shot pastBonetti.
Beckenbauer, who had been attending to Bob-by Charlton, had had to leave him to his owndevices and revert to a more attacking role inthe attempt to get his side back in the game.Rather than leaving Charlton on to exploit thisfreedom, as Beckenbauers shot went in, Ram-sey pulled Charlton off and sent on Colin Bell: I came on to ll Bobs spot. The tempera-ture and the climate takes a lot out of you. Thetheme was just fresh legs. Within a minute
Bell had created a chance for Hurst and had agood shot saved, so close were England to re-establishing a two goal cushion. he inquest is still going on. Were the substi-tions the root of Englands demise. Francisee doesnt think so: The effect of the sub-itutions has been overdone. Colin came onnd played well, we needed fresh legs and atat heat and altitude you needed to use thebs.
eter Osgood added, Bobby had lost 10s against Brazil and Bobby was the jewel.fter the quarter-nal, the semis were threeays later, so Alf tried to nurse him. Andou couldnt ask for a better player to comen than Colin. Its just the other side of thereavesie decision from 66, one worked, onednt.
Was Peter Bonetti to blame? Perhaps Banksight have done better, but then Banks wase best by a long way, a goalkeeping deity.
As mere mortals go, Bonetti did his best andwas not helped by the lack of preparation, concentration time that was denied him byRamseys vacillating.
Peter Osgood is particularly sorry for his
Chelsea colleague: Peter Bonetti was a greatgoalkeeper, the best pro I ever worked with, trained right, ate right, never went out. It justannoys me that he had 20 years at Chelseawhen he was second in the world to Banksieand hes remembered for one game.
West Germany would go on to meet Italywho, having got through the psychologicalterror of the group stage, critical after the1966 asco, were a team reborn in defeatingthe very ordinary Mexicans 4-1. Uruguay andthe Asoviets played each other to a standstillbefore Uruguay nally won 1-0 in extra-time, their prize a meeting with Brazil whohad overcome Peru 4-2. Not much of a prizeas it turned out for after losing an early goal,Brazil hit their stride and ran out convincing
3-1 winners.
The other semi-nal went to extra time asItaly and West Germany were locked at 1-1,Boninsegna scoring after eight minutes, Sch-nellinger equalising with almost the last kick, setting up 30 extraordinary minutes. Mullermade it 2-1 after 94 minutes bur Burgnichsquared it off four minutes later, Riva mak-ing it 3-2 to Italy in the 104th minute. Mullerbrought the Germans back level six minuteson but Rivera sealed a place in the World CupFinal a minute later, Italy 4-3 victors.
Having played extra-time and such emotion-
ally and physically exhausting extra-time atthat, Italy were always second favourites forthe nal, but so good were Brazil that daythey could have been in peak condition andstill been destroyed. They clung on to theBrazilians and were 1-1 at the break but inthe second half, with Pele, Tostao, Gersonand Rivelino all playing the games of theirlives, there was no holding them. Two goalsin ve minutes meant the game was over with20 minutes left, but the best was still to comewith just four minutes left, a delicious pass-
ing move that saw Brazil plot a deliberateand careful course from one end of the eldto the other until the ball ended with Pele 25yards out. He rolled the ball away to his right, seemingly an error because he was passingto nobody. And then there was a blur of yel-low Carlos Alberto, the right-back, appearingfrom out of nowhere to club the ball into thenet. Perhaps the greatest team goal theresever been, certainly a moment representativeof football at its absolute pinnacle. Wevebeen searching for something to match it formore than 40 years.

MICHAEL OWEN TO RETIREEnglands fourth greatest
goalscorer, BBC Personalityof the year at age 18, Owen
played for Liverpool, New-
castle United, Real Madrid,
Manchester United, and
Stoke City while racking
up 89 caps and 40 goals for
England.
Owen became the rst English-
man since Kevin Keegan to re-
eive the European Player of the
Year and then went on to become
he only English winner of the
World Player of the Year award.
Ex-Liverpool manager Ger-
ard Houllier said of Owen: He
cored practically one goal every
wo games for the national team
and the same for Liverpool. As a
manager, I was blessed to have
him in my team.
Owen last started a Premier
League game in October 2010and felt that the time was now
right to call time on his career.
Owen said: I now feel it is the
right time to bring the curtain
down on my career. I have been
very fortunate in that my career
has taken me on a journey that
like many young players start-
ing out, I could only have dreamt
of.
Hes one of the greatest strikers
who has ever put on an England
shirt, Gary Lineker told BBC
Sport.
We could do with someone like
that now, a natural goalscorer.
Michael was unquestionably one
of the best strikers in world foot-
ball at his peak.
But for injures, Michael would
have broken all England scoring
records. He was blighted with
one injury after another, which
was a real shame.

The former England,

admitted to a clinic in
Phoenix by his friends
after appearing drunk at a charity event.
There was no-one to blame for my relapse. I
might drink in the future but thats what it is,
being an alcoholic, the 45-year-old told Sky
Sports News.
I was just bored, thats the worst thing for
me but I suppose it was me that made myself
bored.
The last 11 years, Ive probably drank 14
months out of it. The press say Im drinking all
he time, its not, he added.
I was three years sober and then I had a four or
ve weeks binge. Its just those little binges so
ve just got to stop those binges.
When Im drinking, I forget about everyone
and dont realize the hurt Im doing to everyone
but Ive also got to think about the hurt I was
doing to myself.
I dont know if Im ever going to touch a drink

GAzzA LEAVES REHAB
Sir Alex Ferguson has praised
Swansea City, and striker Mi-
chu in particular, after beingimpressed by the Capital One
Cup winners.
The Welsh side earned a 1-1 draw with
the Reds at Liberty Stadium in Decem-
ber, with their Spanish top scorer can-
celling out Patrice Evras opener, and
have claimed some major scalps under
astute manager Michael Laudrup.
After being asked by Inside United if
any team or player had taken him by
surprise this term, the boss replied:
Swansea have been terric.
The boy Michu has been a revelation.
To sign him for just 2million and get
20 goals out of him - what a bargain!
I wouldnt say Swansea have been
the surprise package but theyve really
lifted their performances. They were
a newly-promoted side last year and
managed to survive in the top ight.
This season, theyve kicked on to an-
other level and become a good middle-
to-top side.
They also won the League Cup of
course and they play really good foot-
ball. Id say theyre the team of the
year with Michu a real bargain buy.

Manchester City are unconcerned
by the pressure being heaped on
them by Yaya Toures agent to come
up with a new deal by the weekend.
Dimitri Seluk is suggesting that talks
are not going well with the club.
If he signs a contract in the next three
or four days, OK. If not, we will not
wait any longer and will start negotia-
tions with different clubs, he said.
I do not feel he will stay at City. This
is not about money. He wants to leave
because of many reasons.

HE VIEW FROM 101 With Tim Hall By some strange coincidence, before each one of these turf games,Thierry Henry has had the unfortunate luck of picking up a slight injury.
eing a fan of the New York Red Bulls isever easy even on a good day, for myri-d reasons discussed here and elsewhere.heres plenty to get annoyed or angry about,o much so that sometimes its easy to missertain things, such is the speed of infor-
mation whizzing by your head at times. Sowhile theres plenty to grouse and grumblever concerning RBNYs 0-1-2 record totart the 2013 campaign, we really do need toake pause and comment on one glaring issue
many people overlook.
hierry Henry, the great French superstar, isither beset by a string of poor luck and badreaks that dees all mathematical probabil-y, or he is a big fat liar liar pants on re
oopyhead. One or the other.
o explain: the next game on New Yorkschedule is away to Montreal. Because late
March is still early winter in Canada, Mon-eal plays its early season games at Olympictadium, which is a big, seventy thousandeat concrete edice better suited for that
ther kind of football. The reason Montrealmakes that switch is because Olympic Sta-
ium has a roof, and therefore a thermostat,nd they believe that these two things work-ng in perfect harmony should cut down on
he deaths by hypothermia by at least 10%.
or reasons that are incredibly scientic and
omplicated, due to the roof, grass wontrow on the eld in Olympic Stadium (con-ult your local grassologist for more informa-on). While it is possible to temporarily lay arass eld down, it is prohibitively expensive
nd almost always looks like it was done by,well, me. Hence, Montreal and the Olympic
tadium staff opt to play their league match-s on turf.
Nowadays there are many types of articial
urf out there AstroTurf, FieldTurf, Poly-urf, ChemGrass - and the technology hasome a long way since its invention some
fty years ago. But if anyone tells you thatunning on turf is practically the same asunning on grass, it is your right and youruty as an American to punch that personn the face. If youve never run on turf, theest way to explain it is that its like thatightmare where a Big Scary Man is chas-ng you, but all of a sudden youve forgottenow legs work. Turf is like green quicksand,
only it isnt, because aside from the feelingthat youre running through paste, theres acertain knee-shattering hardness as well. Itssomething of a wonder that a military some-where hasnt gured out a way to weaponize
the stuff.Which brings us back to Thierry Henry. Mr.Henry, being a man of a certain age, a certainlevel of stardom and a certain paycheck, doesnot like to run on turf. It can be argued, afterseeing him with hands on hips ninety secondsinto a preseason game, that he doesnt like to
run anywhere, at any time, for any reason, but that is a discussion well have to leavefor a different time. We, as fans, know this quirk about ThierryHenry. We can look up and down the sched-ule before the season starts, point to the teamsand the games where articial turf is in play
and say Right, no Henry there, no Henrythere down the line. And if someone Henry, his agent, his coaches, anyone - wouldjust come out and tell the truth, No Henrynext week, not comfortable playing him onthe turf the world would not implode. Intruth, wed probably all wonder why you feltthe need to waste everyones time with suchan announcement in the rst place.
But that doesnt happen. By some strangecoincidence, before each one of these turfgames, Thierry Henry has had the unfortu-nate luck of picking up a slight injury. Noth-ing too bad, mind you, shouldnt be out forvery long, but probably best if he sat thenext game out, wouldnt want to risk it. Andwe, as fans, have been fed this line so oftenthat weve been trained to wipe our browsand thank our lucky stars that this injury is
not only not too serious, but the game beingmissed is one that Henry probably wasnt go-ing to play in the rst place. Bullet dodged.
Its gotten so bad and so blatant that Henrydecided to switch it up once and instead gethimself red carded, rather blatantly, so as tobe suspended for a turf game.So when Thierry Henry went down in a heaptowards the end of New Yorks contest lastweek against DC, there were as many faceshoping it wasnt a season ender as there wererolling their eyes and crossing him off the
roster sheet. What a surprise, phantom injury, hes out for Montreal. Now, I suppose it is, in some way, possiblethat these dozen or so incidents are all coinci-dences, but youd need a high level matholo-gist (located in your phone book a bit aftergrassologist) to calculate the odds. So fornow, solely as a thought experiment, lets justassume these arent ukes and that Henry is
actually acting hurt. The question then is: why? If we all knowthis is the case and know that Henry wontplay those games and, if were not necessar-ily thrilled by it, we can at least understandthe rationale, why is Henry lying to us? Is he
trying not to hurt the feelings of young fansboth at home and abroad? Would kids be-come disenfranchised to get that peek behindthe curtain? Is Henry asking us to participatein the suspension of disbelief the same waywe do with kids who still believe in SantaClaus? An even more interesting question is: how?How does this always come about (assum-ing, again, Monsieur Henry is lying, which
he might not be)?Does Henry doit all by himself?Does a coachcome up to him toremind him of theschedule beforethe game or at thehalf?
Does an agent send him a text message Titi,Montreal next week, go down in the 88th,make it look legit?
That may seem harsh, but that is the sort ofwindow that lies can open up. One minuteyoure lying about an injury, and the nextRoy Miller is skying a free kick in the 93rdminute to help out some of the boys back inFrance. At some point, lies always become aslippery slope.Slippery Slope also being the name of thefourth generation turf coming soon to elds
everywhere.

Fourth time proved a charm for New
York Athletic Club who nally got the
better of New York Greek-American/
Atlas, 3-2 at the Met Oval last Sun-
day, after three successive defeats to
he defending champs this season.
Yannick Reyering [two] and Bayo Adan
cored for six-time CSL titlists NYAC, who
railed 2-1 at one point to the eight-time
champs and current titleholders in their East-
ern conference top-of-the-table encounter.
Stephan Barea and Tom Wharf hit back for
he table-topping Greeks [8-2-1, 25] who
ost a match on the playing eld for the rst
ime this campaign.
Great effort on the part of the boys, said
NYACs Barclay Mackinnon after they cut
he Greek lead to four points.
It was a great game between two very
trong sides, some of the soccer was the best
ve seen all season, observed Joe Ruesgen,
Atlass co-coach. We struggled with [the]
quad due to injuries and work commitments
but all credit to NYAC who played a good
game.
NYAC had previously come a cropper to the
Greeks in the league [1-0], the U.S. Amateur
National Cup [9-8 pens.] and the Manning
Cup [1-0], in that order in the fall.
SWEEP
The result at the Met Oval completed a
NYAC sweep on the day following their re-
erves 4-3 victory in the curtain raiser.
Mike Rueda opened the scoring for us with
a brilliant free kick from 25 yards out at 20
minutes. Two minutes later it was 2-0 from
a scrambled nish by Brian Kuritzky off a
corner, said reserve boss Bill Saporito.
Then we put it on cruise control, and
promptly coughed the ball up twice, sur-
endering two goals. We regrouped at half
time] and when Ryan Kneipper picked up
a deection in front of their net and scored
at 48 minutes we again thought we were in
control.
The Greeks tied it once again on a long
ooping shot that was something of a mishit,
according to my guys; but they all count. In
he 80th minute I brought a third striker onto
he pitch to go for the win and we nally
broke through with two minutes left, Juan
Lanza nishing off a three-man move from
about 10 yards out, Saporito added.
POLE-AXED
n the West, Pancyprian Freedoms demol-
shed Polonia 6-0 at McCarren Park on goals
by Taso Polydefkis [two], Peter Halkides,
ulio [two] and Jeff DiMatteo.
The Greek-Cypriots [6-4-1, 19], whove
blown hot and cold this season, moved to
within two points of joint leaders Lansd-
owne Bhoys and Central Park Rangers, al-
beit theyve played one game more than the
wo frontrunners.
Pancyprians second unit won 3-0.
KICKER STREAK
Joe Haycocks [23rd], Lucas Shanks [57th]
and Antoine Gobin [73rd] tallied for Man-
hattan Kickers who topped Tesoro Brooklyn
Knights 3-2 at Old Boys High School to re-
main undefeated [8-0-2, 26] atop the Divi-
sion Two log.
Kickers reserves also eked out a 2-1 result
over the Tesoro seconds, thanks to Shamie
and Earl Dennis. The victory, however, was
marred by the broken arm suffered by Cami-lo Lopez.
He was rushed to hospital and is on the mend,
according to manager Mike Fitzgerald.
COSTA TREY
Inspired by Brazilian Cassio Costas hat
trick, SC Ukrainians hammered FC Gwar-
dia 6-2 at McCarren Park to stay within ve
points of Kickers in second place.
Mike Glass, David Alkasim and Alagie Jan-
nah were also on target for Steve Kovalen-
kos men [6-1-3, 21].
Kovalenkos reserves blew a 2-0 lead in a
seesaw opener that ended 3-3, after skipper
Larry Crowell had leveled late. Lukasz Pra-
wozin [two] was the other Ukrainian marks-
man.
STAL STRUCK
Jacek Lawniczaks double off assists by Kes-
tutis Mykolaitis saw third place Stal Mielec
cruise past Flank United 2-0 at Bushwick
Inlet.
Stals second unit won by double that mar-
gin, Waldemar Pyryt [two], Robert Rybicki
and Jacek Korba dispatching their opponents4-0.
COP ROMP
Elsewhere in the second tier, NYPD ham-
mered FC Japan 4-1 on Randalls Island with
Greg Baum [two], Collin Wynter and George
Bedoya leading the rout.
The Cop reserves had goals from Reza Ar-
debili, Terrence Wilson and Jean Morand in
a 3-0 romp.
HEARTS ECLIPSED
In a Metro Two xture at Cantiague Park,
FC Bravehearts succumbed 6-3 to Hicksville
All Stars despite strikes by Fiddles Idoko
[two] and Guillermo Ortiz.
CELTIC DAY
Ian Woodcocks Manhattan Celtic celebrated
St. Patricks Day with a 4-1 thrashing of ri-
vals Barnstonworth Premier in a top-of-the-
table Over-30 Div. One affair on Randalls
Island.
I told the players that it was difcult enough
to play on St Patricks Day but a victory
would be the only thing that would make it
worth it, said Woodcock. They didnt let
us down!
Woodcock, a native of Bray in County Wick-
low, Ireland, might have been tempted to
dance a jig at the interval after Marc Zenons
superb rst half trick gave the Celts a seem-
ingly insurmountable lead. Simon Nee had
assists on all three goals.
On resumption, Barnstonworths NedgyNazon pulled one back from the spot on the
hour after Celtic had made a few changes.
However, any hopes of a comeback in an
evenly matched second half were dashed
when Phil James fed John ONeil for Celt-
ics fourth goal.
A solid performances across the board and a
good win. We played well, stood strong and
played some good football. It was a good
team performance, Woodcock summed up.
With the win, once-beaten Celtic [8-1, 24]
moved ve points clear of Premier atop the
Over-30 Div. One West standings.
GREY MASTERS
Unbeaten Over-30 Div. Two A leaders Cen-
tral Park Rangers Greys silenced Brooklyn
Gunners 5-2 at Red Hook to stay ve points
clear of sister club CPR Old Boys.
Ilija Zlater [two], Danny Azzo, Texas
Mike Waddell and Mark Cheese Chees-
man saw off Gunners as the Greys improved
to 8-0-2, 26.
On Randalls Island, Old
Boys Chris Williams, David
Sawyer and Jesse Phillips
scored in a 3-1 romp over
Troy Turkish United, whose
Almar replied.
LEGENDS PREVAIL
Red Hook also proved to be a happy hunt-
ing ground for CPR Legends, beneciaries
of a Steven Pritchard brace in a 3-1 defeat
of SC Gjoa.
Pritchards rst was set up by a Manohar
Venkataraman header. He buried a Dan
Ochoa cross for number.
Venkataraman got into the act as well, net-
ting a scorcher during a goalmouth scramble
for his fth goal of the campaign. Gjoa got a
goal back from the penalty spot.
EIGHT-COUNT
At Tibbets Brook Park, Roland Dembar
bagged half of the goals in Jersey City Ea-
gles 8-2 drubbing of Megas Alexandros in a
clash between the top two sides in Over-30Div. Two B.
Vuksan Djoljevic, Mario Kapxhiu and Mario
Gallo accounted for the other goals as Eagles
[9-01, 28] opened up a seven-point gap while
inicting a rst loss on Megas [6-1-3, 21].
DOUBLE DOUBLE
Also in Over-30 Div. Two action, Darran
Cronshaw struck twice in mid-table Nieuw
Amsterdams 2-2 tie with BW G Cosmos
whose Paz responded in kind on Randalls

greetings!

In a game with the feel of
a local derby at Greenbelt
Recreation Center, Mr. Den-
nehys held off Metro One
[West] rivals and co-tenants
Korabi 5-3 after threatening
a rout.
Lance Pitterson [two], Gerry Smith,
Jonathan Johnny Imundo and Terrence
Ahoua had the West leaders up 5-1 mid-
way through the second half after Korabi
had taken an early lead. However, Den-
nehys let Korabi off the hook and conceded two late goals.
Said Dennehys Ronan Gardiner: Sharing the same eld, we
have grown to consider the game against Korabi as a derby
match. A good natured derby match. We have a lot of respect for
them and its usually a closely contested affair, although in truth,
Korabi have had the better of the games over the years.

WENGER BLASTED BY GOALKEEPERS FATHER
Wojciech Szczesnys father hasiticized Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger for what he feels is a scape-oating of his son.
he young goalkeeper was left out of the Gun-
rs side for the Champions League clash
ainst Bayern Munich last week and Satur-
ys win over Swansea, with Wenger claiming
e 22-year-old had been mentally affected
the number of games he has played.
ut Maciej Szczesny - a professional who won
ven caps for Poland - told a Polish newspa-
r that he feels Wenger has handled the situ-
on poorly.
Wenger already started to look for the scape-
at, said Szczesny. It is not the way the boss
ould behave.
Wojciech has had two serious injuries. He
ayed with one in April and May [last year].
e shouldnt have agreed to play that time, bute coach insisted.
Wojciech did not train the whole week and
en a warm up on Friday and played the match
Saturday. He was naturally more suscepti-
e to minor injuries and his form was going
wn.
Wenger was playing with the young
mans good health and Wojciech
agreed foolishly. In my opinion Mr
Wenger messed up a lot in April andMay. I dont blame the young man
who went along with his coach, his
current lack of form is a result of those
two months.
Then in August there was a foot [an-
kle] injury after which he played al-
most instantly. After seven weeks out
Wojciech trained for just seven days
and played the match. How on earth can he be
on his highest form?
Wenger has insisted Szczesny is still part of his
long-term plans, and Szczesny Snr is condent
his son will soon establish himself as the north
London clubs number one again.
This last period has not been successful for
Wojciech, the fact that Arsene Wenger did not
take him to Munich shows something, Maciej
Szczesny added.
However, I think my son can be the number
one [Arsenal] keeper over 10 years, he just
needs to come back to form and then a situ-
ation where we can stop to wonder who will
stand between the posts.

Foals, Kraftwerk and Bloc Partyhave been unveiled as the headliners
for this years Latitude Festival.
Latitude is always exciting, because they
offer a very tasteful selection of acts, Yan-
nis Philippakis of Foals has said.
For our band, its an honour to head-
ine alongside someone of the calibre of
Kraftwerk they can do whatever they like.
Theyre unique, and you know theyre go-
ng to put on an incredible show. Bloc Party
will be fantastic headliners, too.
Organiser Melvin Bennmade the announcements onBBC 6Music yesterday, andhas spoken of his obses-sion with one of the threebill-topppers.
Im obsessed with Foals, Idont think theres a recordout thatsI just cant stopplaying it, its so good, hesaid of Foals new albumHoly Fire.
At Latitude, weve always given bandsthe opportunity to make that rst headline
performance, and for Foals, theyre ready to
step up and I cant wait for it.
Latitude will take place over the weekend of
July 19th-21st at Henham Park in Suffolk.
Bloc Party head the line-up on Friday, with
Kraftwerk following on Saturday evening
and Foals closing on the Sunday.

Reecting on the recording
sessions for their impendingfth studio effort, Strokes
bass player Nikolai Fraiture
recently revealed that the
New York group had enjoyed
a far more relaxed atmo-
sphere this time round, one
which reminded him of the
good old days.
We recorded ten or eleven
songs and there is other stuff
oating around, he told
BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe
earlier this month. We
hashed it out all together like
the good old days. Its a leg-
endary studio and it is not far
away from us all, apart from
Nick who lives in Los Ange-
les but he made the trip out
to record.

corded at New Yorks Tarbox Studios, and has been produced by both the band
and Dave Frid-mann. Front-
man WayneCoyne recentlydescribed theLP thus:
Why wouldwe make thismusic that isThe Terror
this bleak, disturbing record? I dont really wantto know the answer that I think is com-ing: that we were hopeless, we were dis-turbed and, I think, accepting that somethings are hopeless. Or letting hope inone area die so that hope can start to live
in another? Maybe this is the beginningof the answer.
