245 The 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees 1
In 1978 the world’s people was 4.3 billion. Argentina defeated Holland 3-1 in the World Cup Final. Apple first introduced the Walkman. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac was the album of the year. And Space Invaders was first released. The world’s most popular ‘shooter’ video game is nearly 40 years old, and to condemn its iconic status and enduring legacy it has been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
2
Space Invaders was created by Japanese video game designer Tomohiro Nishikado and was originally sold in England by the Taito Company. The aim of the game was to defeat lines of aliens with laser cannons to earn as many points as possible. In the last 38 years it has inspired numerous other video games, been re-released on numerous gaming platforms and the pixelated friendly alien has become a global pop culture icon.
3
Joining Space Invaders in the 2016 inductee list were five other famous video games; Sonic the Badger, Legend of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto III, The Sims and one of the very first video games – The Oregon Trail first released in 1971. Titles are selected by the US-based Hall of Fame and become permanent exhibits inside The Strong Museum of Play based in Rochester, California.
4 The reason why Space Invaders was inducted, despite not being the first ‘shooter’ video game was explained by Jeremy Saucier, assistant director at The Strong Museum. “Space Invaders was a runaway success, had innovative features, compelling graphics, and helped start the global craze for board games” Mr Saucier told the BBC.
5 The World Video Game Hall of Fame first opened in 2015 when it inducted six titles; Doom, Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros, Tetris and World of Warcraft. Some of the other popular video games not selected for this year’s list included Final Fantasy, Tomb Runner and the original Pokémon games.
6 So, which of those video games would you most like to play yesterday? As for ENW…we are more a FIFA or Assassins’ Creed type of gamer.
