ENW 344 Introduction This week’s English News Weekly podcast reports on something a little bit different from our usual news stories from somewhere around the world. We will explore why Friday 13th is considered to be unlucky and what mysterious events have occurred on this date through history. “You're doomed if you stay here! This place is cursed. Cursed!” Don’t worry ENW has not gone crazy - well we don’t think we have gone crazy. But, did you recongise that piece of movie dialogue? It is from one of the most famous 1: _________ movies of all time Friday 13th. This week’s ENW podcast falls on a Friday 13th, so we thought we would 2: _______ why this date is considered to be so unlucky by many people around the world.

The first conclusion that ENW drew from our research – is that nobody really knows why Friday 13th is 3: ________ to be unlucky. The number 13 in many Western countries is considered unlucky and there are a couple of potential reasons why. Interestingly they both seem to revolve around parties! Firstly Judas Iscariot the disciple who 4: _______ Jesus Christ has been labeled the 13th guest at the Last Supper – an image immortalised in a painting by Leonardo da Vinci.

Whilst another 5: _______ source ENW uncovered about the number 13 is from Norse mythology. Loki the demi-god of mischief turns up uninvited at a 6: _______ in Valhalla and thus became the 13th guest. He then goes on to argue and then kill Balder – the son of Odin one of the good gods causing all the other gods to grieve.
4 A third potential origin for 13 being unlucky is one that is actually an historical fact and occurred on a Friday 13th. The Knights Templar was a 7: ________ military order founded in 1119 that protected pilgrims journeying from Europe to Jerusalem. For nearly 200 years the Templar’s power grew until King Phillip IV of France, jealous of their power and 8: _______ of their wealth, issued an order against them on Friday October 13th 1307.
