police Update

The long awaited development on Carn Brea Parish’s outer edge moved a step closer recently as plans were approved for housing and offices at Tuckingmill. There will be a mixed development of 81 flats and houses and the refurbishment of the old fuseworks or ‘Northern Lights’ building into offices. Due to the high costs of cleaning up the contaminated land, the developer has not been asked to provide any ‘affordable’ housing but Cornwall Council will provide some subsidy for this. We are waiting to hear whether the council has been successful in its bid for funding to provide a new east-west link road from Heartlands, over the old South Crofty site to Dolcoath. This will relieve pressure on Pendarves Street and allow the final phase

to go ahead, clearing up this area and providing a fitting setting for the World Heritage site. South Crofty has already had permission to move their operation towards the railway line by Brea. The World Heritage Site signage is expected next year – at last! Carn Brea’s Remembrance was a week earlier than Camborne this year, which gave me the opportunity to attend both. It was a cold, bright day and a good place to remember those who gave everything. I wish we could find some way to stop the cars going past but even so, the small and personal service was a very poignant event and it was good to see so many local children attending and laying wreaths. Jude Robinson

The Council wishes to recognise outstanding achievements, by person or persons, who have served this Parish. The Clarence Coombe Memorial Award is in memory of the late Clarence Coombe, a well respected councillor who served the parish for many years. The award will be presented to a nominee, who lives in the parish and who has given life-long service, performed an heroic deed, or attained individual achievement through work, study, conquest of illness or disability, etc.The Parish Council would welcome

nominations for this award. The proposal should be made in writing to the clerk, marked “Clarence Coombe Award” and stating the reasons for the nominations by the 31st March 2012.

The Parish Council is looking for land owners who would be interested in having trees planted on their land for the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Queen

Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee is an historic event, and to celebrate millions of people across the UK are coming together to plant 6 million trees. As such the Parish Council is trying to identify any person who might be interested in the scheme. This is a celebration for everyone, whether you’re able to create a large wood on your own land, a smaller one in your local community, or simply want to plant a single tree in your back garden. The packs of trees are available in two sizes - either 105 trees or 420 trees - and are themed to help so that we could choose the best mix for our parish. This includes:

Wildlife: Blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel, birch, rowan, oak Year-round colour: Hawthorn, hazel, birch, rowan, cherry, dogwood Wood fuel: Ash, birch, cherry, oak, hornbeamWild harvest: Hazel, blackthorn, crab apple, elder, dog rose This project would run in conjunction with a scheme the Parish Council is already engaged in called The Jubilee Fields Project. This project aims to protect 2,012 outdoor recreational spaces as a permanent legacy marking Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee next year.If you have land that you would like planted with trees for the Diamond Jubilee Project please contact the Parish Council tree warden Cllr John Rowe on 01209 712199 or e-mail: [email protected].
