SOCIAL MEDIA CHARACTERS

The first initial idea I had was to create a social networking website where young designers, such as myself, could sign-in to discuss on-going design works.

The device to attract people into the site would be that everyone could submit a character for fun, or to use as a profile.

As people approach design differently, (traditional, digital, illustrative) there would hopefully be a wide range of

characters. The possibility of a character a day would create a large library full of them, and would be versatile to apply to other design applications. (print, products, digital media etc.)

The visual aesthetic looks pleasing, but there is a possibility that it could target the younger audience. This would create confusion between form and content.

Also one of the main problems

that may arise would be a struggle with creativity, because it would be very difficult to come up with something ground-breaking whilst coding at the same time.

I realised earlier on that it would be a gamble, skill wise, to bring a possible design for a website to life. This concept can be regarded as a strict anticipated failure early on.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT PROPOSAL

Title // An interactive, communal, social discussion for students to discuss topics related to graphic design.

Project Summary // As a Graphic Design student and communication being one of the main focal points of the course, I feel that there isn’t much networking; even between our two graphics courses. Imagine a website that will enable discussions, tips, reviews about work between all graphic students across the country. For example if someone didn’t know how to make a typeface, they could propose the question, discuss and review work. If no-one at our University knew another student else-where would probably know.

Field of study // My main chosen area of subject would be primarily web design, I need to research into making database forms. For example I can download software called MAMP that will enable me to have local web sever to create PHP, MySQL files to export for a proper server. I already know basic HTML and the next step would be to take it to the next level.

Methods // My project will involve the obvious, web-design and branding with all the necessary graphic design elements such as typography and image. Also it will enable me a lot of experimentations, documentations and hopefully industry insight such to gather interviews and articles. Print design can be taken into consideration.

Projection and future ambition // Wanting to work in a multidisciplinary agency and needing digital skills to help, creating something for web and print would be appropriate. My independent practice and external positioning backs this up because of the work I’ve produced. (So the link here is my practice not necessarily the theme).

Prediction // Ultimately I aim to produce a design that is useful and functioning even after I graduate. Hopefully this will help close the gap between where I am now to where I want to be, but also proving to have the necessary skills for industry. I think this project is achievable for development and production over the course of three and a half months. A lot of hard work lays ahead!

Page 7: FMP

ANALYSING THE PROPOSAL

After my initial concept, I realised that the idea to create a social network website would be more trouble than it's worth. I think it may be good to tackle my F.M.P proposal from a different angle, to analyse social behaviour surrounding communities, or colonies, and not trying to build one. I think that maybe this would lead to a better outcome resulting into a more interesting final piece.

An article in NetMagazine changed my shifted my position completely after numerous, valid reasons why my concept / idea won’t work. They seemed a lot more coherent, out-weighing the reasons why it could work. This is due to effectiveness, standards, behavior, and interaction.

Also the target audience is now 20+

In terms of skill, although researched, this might be one step too far to execute. Although I have experience in HTML and CSS, learning how to control databases might be too much of a challenge.

At this stage I made the critical decision to analyse social networks, rather than to build one.

I feel that this might lead to a far more creative outcome, through content and aesthetic value.

Page 8: FMP

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT

To get some practice in with HTML and CSS(3), I thought it would be good to create a online portfolio website as I would need one anyway.

The initial idea was quite simple. To create a one page website that will display my About, Portfolio, and Contact section. After a workshop with Jules, I realised the portfolio site needs to be nicely designed, but incredibly

simplistic. From a non-designer point of view, I need to get straight to the point, and that’s my work.

I’ve adopted a minimalist approach and managed to code my own web gallery, meaning the images slide back and forth in a container. It’s good to practice with the less conventional layouts.

There is a lot of technical skill involved it terms of execution, because there isn't

much freedom when designing with code, however when you keep practicing, you realise how you can exploit this problem to visualise the intended design.

Overall (Portfolio Outcome on next page) I decided to keep my website white, clean, with pixel perfect typography. The thing I learnt the most when creating a portfolio website is that, user-navigation / feedback is vitally important.

PORTFOLIO OUTCOME

Producing a portfolio online is quicker, faster and is able to utilise different medias, unlike print.

INTRO TO HTML / CSS

Organising, structuring and running through how to teach HTML and CSS gave me a great understanding to what I was doing. Having a chance to actually analyse code has increased the quality and performance of the code I was writing.

This has many benefits from, faster loading times, user interactivity and my own efficiency in producing structured web layout.

The lesson also paid off for the students involved because they can start to hand-code websites. Becky Scarborough has used the lesson to develop her own portfolio website.

Whereas, Ben Wood took what coding he has learnt to form his website, (http://digestibledata.co.uk) for his FMP. This proves that I'm skilled in producing, designing and executing HTML code.

I have been lucky enough to tutor my own session to introduce HTML and CSS to students at UCA Epsom. It was a great learning curve for me and a confidence booster to present and teach.

The session ran for two hours provided with a handout consisting of a step-by-step guide. It involved creating an incredibly simple coded website that I could teach to students.

INFOGRAPHICS !!

I need to make my infographics seem more appealing. To have an element of interactivity, and to use some kind of device — ¹ like my last project — would be good. I made this quick poster, so I can try to steer clear of creating visuals like this.

Although information graphics is about displaying data, it might be appropriate for visuals like this to display commercial details, relating to

finance or statistics, because you jut need to get straight to the point. The other argument is, does the visual appearance actually relate to the subject matter.

This is an example of what I think most infographics convey, in terms of message and design. A large number with supporting text doesn't really do much for me because, is the percentage more important than the message.

Pie charts, however great for displaying percentages, have no other message or meaning behind its appearance.

Also does the location of a place have to be strictly accurate, or can it be deistic.

SOCIAL SYSTEM

I wanted to experiment and research into how much technology plays a part in our social system. It is key to how we communicate as a whole.

The aesthetic, I feel has a metaphoric value that communicates with the audience, showing that there is research and theory studied behind it.

The infographic represents the population of the biggest social media

sites out there that revolve around one social object, in this case a mobile device. When everybody has this much power in their hands, and with enough persuasive power, Chaos Theory can take it’s toll. All it takes is for just one person to post an opinion, than chaos or war can start.

The planets are scaled to a suitable ratio, to fit with the population. Planets nearer the sun, are older.

From reading Introducing Chaos it explains how chaos makes its presence felt in a vast, variety of events, and examines the roots of chaos. The relationship between chaos and complexity, suggests that all complex systems evolve from a few simple rules.(Sardar, Ziauddin. 1999)

KINDRED ULTRA

Kindred is a, sans-serif typeface suitable for display / headline purposes. It's an on-going experiment to create a chunky typeface with many different variants. This shows what there is to come in the future.

I say future because I intend to develop this further. The idea was to create a logotype for my proposed website, to use for display. The reason

why I wanted to create a font is to get the balance of communication right. This typeface needs to be bold and stern but also not intimidating the audience into scaring them away before they even delve into the content.

Every type design I start, there is an immense amount of pencil sketching involved, more or less to get the curves and feel right. After that it's a matter

of digitalizing them into fontlab. It's a lot harder than it looks to get the flow, weight and balance right of each letter, along with a consistency that they all belong to the same font family.

If I was to develop this further I would intend to use this to help communicate my final piece, only when it is complete.

SOCIAL CHAOS DEVELOPMENT

This made me want to find out where a real world chaotic problem could possibly stem from. The fact it could be a matter of anything vastly complicates the understanding.

From using the structure of how ant's social interactivity work it made it easier to form a structure to our own social system. It's amazing how alike we are in comparison to ants.

I always tend to sketch everything out first, and in this case I chose not to. I didn't see the point of sketching on an isomeric pad when I could just create one in illustrator.

I have taken visual inspiration from SimCity. It is a game a vast majority of people know, and has that virtual game aesthetic. I think it will help communicate to my targeted audience of 20+

Social Chaos began with an experiment into categorising the human social network as a whole.

From reading Introducing Chaos, (Sardar, Ziauddin. 1999) it explains how chaos makes its presence felt in a vast, variety of events, and examines the roots of chaos. The relationship between chaos and complexity, suggests that all complex systems evolve from a few simple rules.

At this stage I think it would be good to give an overall review to my thinking, to make it clear what worked and failed. Also what knowledge, understanding and skill I can take through to conclude this Final Major Project.

At the very beginning of this FMP I made a critical decision to abandon the idea to create a social network website. It didn't appear to lead down

any possible creative avenue, meaning that my final piece could look and have the same meaning as any other social networking website. Also in terms of skill, It would of been a great risk for me to execute this concept.

Turning to analyse and study a social network may produce a better result but still producing a final outcome through a digital application.

Developing further, I wanted to make sure I also didn't produce the same infographics you would see everyday, so I produced a poster to avoid the issue.

The "Nikon, UniverScale" is great in terms of interactivity, and displaying infographics in a creative way. I like how it functions, with smooth transitions creating an interesting but fun experience. Relating to practice, this is good design.

BONUS

The 1962 prediction of Marshall Mcluhan's Global Village became a reality when world wide communication became instant. (The Marshall McLuhan Center. 2008). Meaning that technology has evolved so much that our social network is in chaos and unmanageable. I like the term Global Village and utilised it to help structure, and analyse

further in-depth what I believe the main assets of our social structure are. The population of the planet is far too big so to compare our country to others would be better to understand.

After realising this, Clauswitz, states that we all play a part in a intelligent war. Not a war of bloodshed but a war of territory, finance and other powers.

Game theory backs up Clauswitz, and the aesthetic of my isometric drawings convey an element of a virtual game.(J.J. Graham translation 1873) (Myerson, Roger B. 1991)

Also, my target audience of 20+ can relate to the aesthetic, which then has a knock on effect for them to absorb the information graphics.

Page 30: FMP
Page 31: FMP

FLASH EXPERIENCE

HTML can offer a great user-experience but most of the technology is still in development, meaning that most of the new interactive features aren't functioning or stable in all web browsers.

However, Flash can offer a great user experience, with transitions, animations, and sounds to help communicate more or less anything

you want to. Flash is relevant to now, and is stable in all web browsers.

After drawing all of my design in Illustrator and importing into Flash, I can use actionscript to bind all the interactivity together, such as buttons to pop-up menus that will contain the infographics.

Also sounds to enhance user-

feedback can really make the experience better. I used subtle sounds (sourced from soundbible.com) for the buttons, and ambient noise in the background, just to create a calm atmosphere.

Also when exploiting the power of Flash, I could import a short introductory animation to help explain context behind the website.

THE SITE

Like any website the navigation and usability is an integral part of the design. Having great content, or visual finesse is great but if the user can't find their way around, it's a real problem.

My navigation is incredibly simple. When the website loads for the first time, I have emphasised clearly where the menu is by fading it in. Also there

is a association between the content from the introductory animation and the titles of the navigation buttons.

Once the user has selected a level, they can press on a highlighted building to show the content. All my content is based around the UK social hierarchy/system and how it relates in comparison the other countries. This example

specifically shows the social behaviour of why peopled are summoned to prison sentences. I think it is important to see how our society handles culture, plus depicting our country as a whole.

The appearance is bright and colourful to get people interested but holds a strong message, (infographics)which is what I intended to achieve.

SOURCES FOR IMAGERY

SKILLS (SOFTWARE)

The development throughout the FMP indicated that I wanted to find a solution to analyse social networks, through the form of a digital application. The key issues the arose consistently in my project where:

• Understanding of social networks / hierarchy and target audience• Knowledge of aesthetics that will communicate my message clearly• Skill through digital application

The final outcome resulted in a Flash website that addresses the UK's social network in terms of hierarchy. The user could sift through an array of information relating to current affairs to help them understand what part we play in our social network.

If I was to develop this further I would intend to maybe elaborate further, into what some unfamiliar terms mean. For example "Private-Non Profit" means organization that under state law, function to not make a profit. (Charities, religion etc.) This maybe unclear to what it means in the website.

Also another example is that our country produces weapons that we don't use, but sell to lesser economic countries to make a profit. Information like this may produce confusion within the website, so for it to be kept simple makes it clear to understand.

I feel that I have hit my target audience of 20+ well. The aesthetic of a virtual game conveys a simple contemporary approach that we can all relate to. This makes the content easier, and more fun to communicate.

In Relation To Contemporary PracticeI feel that information graphics in static / print form can appear very intimidating, with a large amount of data spread across, usually one page. This can dramatically decrease the interest from the audience, implying that they probably won't absorb any information.

The power to digitalize and show information in small doses, makes it easier to digest. Although a book can arguably do this in the tradition medium, a digital application can be faster and more effective. When you combine information graphics with relevant aesthetic, along with sound, it makes the viewing experience a whole lot more exciting, fusing together the concept and meaning.
