game tells you what areas you need to im-prove upon.

“This group has shown good chemistry, andI like the fact they can play well together. The‘buy-in’ factor that every new coach muststrive to instill has also been good with thisunit.

“As far as team leadership, the positive ofbeing an entirely new staff is that all playersare new to us and therefore there is no pres-sure on any returnees. Point guards arekey to leadership because they have the ballin their hands, and seniors are alwayslooked to by freshmen. Leaders can bedeveloped and we have communicated thisto our seniors, and we follow that by sayingit is OK to have different styles of leader-ship. We want them to understand that role.”

“The strength of this team should be ourdefense. The players understand that gooddefense makes offense easier. The em-phasis on defense will also hopefully takesome pressure off the players at the offen-sive end, and help us relax. We have talkedabout getting to the free throw line – espe-cially given that all trips will be two shotswith the new rule change – and in turn notfouling on the defensive end. In two scrim-mages, we played eight quarters withoutallowing our opponents to reach the pen-alty.

“We also practice turning defensive in of-fense. If we can defend, we can be com-petitive every night. We need to also committo being a good rebounding team. If we wantto run, we need to control the defensiveboards.

“Our conditioning has been good. From Day

The The Francis Marion Universitywomen’s basketball team will open its2015-16 season under the direction of first-year head coach Jeri Porter on Friday (Nov.13) at 2 p.m. against Erskine College inthe Peach Belt Conference-ConferenceCarolinas Challenge in Dahlonega, Ga.The two-day event is being hosted by theUniversity of North Georgia and will be heldin the Nighthawks’ 1,025-seat MemorialHall. On Saturday, the Patriots will take onNorth Greenville University at noon.

Porter welcomes back five letterwinners –four of whom were starters – from last year’s8-20 squad that suffered eight losses bysix points or less. On that team, freshmenaccounted for 56 percent of the offense.

Porter owns more than 200 career coach-ing wins during a career that has seen herpatrol the sidelines at both the Division Iand II levels. Her initial FMU squad will con-sist of two seniors, two juniors, four sopho-mores, and four freshmen.

The returning starters include senior 5-6guard Camille Dash (6.3 ppg, 2.9 apg),senior 5-11 forward Alaysia Watts (6.2 ppg,5.9 rpg), sophomore 5-10 guard KhayaniChandler (10.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg), and sopho-more 5-8 forward Briana Burgins (7.4 ppg,6.1 rpg). Also back is sophomore 6-0 for-ward Courtney Wood (4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg), whoappeared in 25 contests and did make fivestarts as a freshman.

Three newcomers arrive with previous col-legiate experience. Junior 5-5 point guardTeTe Flowers (15.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and jun-ior 5-7 guard Victoria Dye (11.3 ppg, 5.8rpg) both come to FMU from Volunteer StateCommunity College in Tennessee. ThePatriots also gain the services of sopho-more 5-10 guard-forward Kristin Tines, who transfers from Cloud County Commu-nity College in Kansas.

The freshmen class consists of four Pal-metto State products: 5-9 forward LaurynBush from Hilton Head High School, 5-8guard Brooke Dixon from Camden HighSchool, 5-10 forward Shaunice Fulmorefrom Lake City High School, and 6-2 centerKacey Medlin from Florence ChristianSchool.

“I feel really good about the effort and thework these young ladies have put in duringthe pre-season,” Porter said. “We areready to play somebody so we can seewhere we stand, and not stand pat inwhere we think we are. Every opening

One, we have stressed that we want toplay a certain way and everything in thepre-season has been predicated towardthat goal.”

Porter talked of an 8-to-9 player rotationthat likely would have Flowers and Dashstarting in the backcourt with Dye, Burgins, and Watts along the frontline. “I believethat our four upperclassmen (juniors andseniors) can provide scoring, but we needto get them the ball in the right spots. Notthat she wouldn’t ever start, but right nowI like Fulmore in a ‘sixth-starter’ role be-cause she can do so many things offen-sively.”

Francis Marion has an all-time mark of28-14 in season openers. The Patriotslead the all-time series against Erskine22-2, although the Flying Fleet capturedlast year’s season-opener by a 75-59 de-cision. FMU defeated North Greenville 61-60 in last season’s challenge, the first-ever meeting between the two programssince NGU moved to four-year status.

FMU’s opening three games will be onthe road, including a Nov. 18 tilt at Divi-sion I UNC Greensboro, prior to the Patri-ots’ home opener against Pfeiffer Univer-sity on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at theSmith University Center. This year’s slateincludes 14 home contests.

In the team’s 42-year history, FMU hastotaled 811 all-time victories and twenty-two 20-win seasons – and stands 11thamong all Division II programs in totalwins. The Patriots advanced to the NCAADivision II Tournament in 2008, 2009,2010, and 2011, but since then FMU islooking for its first winning campaign.FMU is 68-5 in its last 73 games (over 15seasons) when scoring 85 points or more.

Pearl Moore, women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader, is a 1979 Francis Marion University gradu-ate. Moore, a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School, played for the Patriots between1975 and 1979, and the four-time All-American scored 4,061 career points.

Moore started her collegiate career at Anderson Junior College in the fall of 1975. After one semester atAnderson (eight games and 177 points), she transferred to Francis Marion. Fortunately, the Patriots didnot open their cage season until after the first of the year, and thus Moore played the entire 1975-76Francis Marion schedule. At that time under Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)rules, a player could transfer and be eligible immediately. The 5-7 guard-forward went on to score 3,884points in a Patriot uniform. Her career point total includes the points scored at Anderson, because atthat time in women’s basketball, two- and four-year schools regularly competed against each other andall results counted.

During her junior year, she scored a then single-game record 60 points in a 114-71 victory over EasternWashington State College in the 1978 AIAW Small College National Tournament (see lower left photo). In her final collegiate game, March 10, 1979, an AIAW Small College Regional Tournament consolationgame against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she tallied 42 points to break the previousall-time record of 4,045 set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State University.

Moore averaged 30.6 points per game over her four seasons (127 games) at Francis Marion, andhelped lead head coach Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell’s program to an 85-42 record and three national tourna-ment appearances. She scored below 20 points only 18 times in her Francis Marion career, andreached the 50-point mark on three occasions. She scored 1,109 points in her junior year alone. Inaddition to her point total, recorded in an era that did not have the three-point field goal, Moore grabbed1,270 rebounds and shot 45.9 percent from the field and a then school-record 70.0 percent from thefree-throw line.

Since that time, two male players (John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson, both of David Lipscomb University) have surpassed her total, but she stillstands as the only female player to reach 4,000 career points. MiriamWalker-Samuels of Claflin College (SC) is second on the women’sscoring list with 3,855 points.

Following her career at Francis Marion, Pearl went on to play two sea-sons in the Women’s Pro Basketball League (1979-80 with the New YorkStars and 1980-81 with the St. Louis Streak), earning All-Star status in1981, and one season in Venezuela.

Moore was one of the first inductees into the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame in1992. In 1994, she was nominated by the university for induction into theNaismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and her name remains inthe nomination process. During the summer of 1996, several items fromPearl’s playing days were sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame in Spring-field, Mass., for inclusion in the Women’s Basketball Exhibit Area. In 2000, she was inducted into theSouth Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2008 became a member of the Florence Area Athletic Hall ofFame. In 2011, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
