It is hard to believe it but local Conservatives have forced through a “money saving” deal that will cost local taxpayers £2.4m million more to run some council services. They paid a further £2m in consultants’ advice to get this “deal.” Independent experts have backed the Lib Dem view this
money could have been better spent. Staff in those services should have been allowed a chance to compete on an even playing field.The private supplier meanwhile has seen its share price falling, and speculation about its own future. The local Tories deal has left Bournemouth residents to pick up the bill for years to
Victory for local elderly and homelessLocal charities supporting the homeless, those with mental illness and other vulnerable residents are celebrating after local Conservative cuts were halted – for now. Lib Dems and many others campaigned to stop these cruel cuts. Local Conservatives proposed these cuts back in November last year. This led to a long period of anxiety for many. The cuts were halted due to use of “one-off” money. This means there isn’t a longterm commitment. Was the decision just because it is an election year?

As a result local schools will now get £430 for every child eligible for free school meals. This can be spent on extra 1:1 tuition, breakfast clubs or whatever the school feels appropriate. The amount will rise each year, and be worth £2.5bn a year.

The local Conservatives have spent £8.5m of our money on the IMAX, with no real plan as to what to do next. The Conservatives have been forced to admit “it could be 5 to 10 years before a developer comes along.” This is as good as saying nothing is likely to happen. In the mean time businesses are leaving the building so it is becoming an empty, white elephant. Lowering the roof will help improve the view – but cost more money when Day centres and Countryside services are being decimated. The consultation exercise of what should replace the site was a sham. Either the market should produce
commercially viable plans, or the Conservatives need to admit they plan on getting local taxpayers to pay even more to subsidize their vanity projects. Council budgets are being cut and critical services for the elderly and most vulnerable
