Fraternal Order of Eagles

Diabetes Research Center

Officially Opens Its Doors

After six years of hard work, the

ribbon has officially been cut and

the doors to the Fraternal Order

of Eagles Diabetes Research Center have opened, ready to take the next step

in our journey to find a cure.

Eagles from across the United States and Canada gathered in Iowa City to

celebrate the occasion. Dignitaries from the F.O.E. and the University of Iowa

officially cut the ribbon Friday afternoon outside of the Pappajohn Biomedical

Discovery Building, where the DRC occupies 1.5 floors.

Doctors and researchers lined the floor of the DRC early Saturday morning as

waves of Eagles shuttled in to tour the facility and take photos

commemorating the visit. Guests had the opportunity to see the various

offices and meeting rooms bearing the names of the States/Provinces,

Regions and Conferences responsible for playing key roles in the funding of

the DRC.

Mike Mitchell March 6, 1958 – July 7, 2014

Mike Mitchell, 56, was a loving and caring man. He was a dedicated husband of 32 years, and a father to two boys. He

selflessly put others before himself on a regular basis. Mike kept busy volunteering, playing pool, fishing, golfing, and

spending time with his family. Summers were spent at the lake enjoying time with the Amisk lake family.

Mike was an employee of the City of St. Albert for 30+ years. He was always joking around (mostly at his own expense) and

taking time to talk to everyone he ran into.

An Eagle member since October 2009 and recently awarded Eagle of the year, was loved and respected by all his brothers.

Mike is survived by his wife Heidi, his two sons Mark and Dave, and grandchildren Jakob, Stella, and Karson. Mike also leaves

to mourn his parents Larry and Lorraine, his sisters Lori, Donna, and Brenda.

“I wanted to pass on that the Eagles were very proud and blessed to have a guy like Mike Mitchell as a member. Proud

because he represented us so well at the club, in the community, and throughout Eagledom when traveling to other clubs for

various tournaments etc. He was always a gentleman and epitomized what it means to be an Eagle.

Blessed because of his untiring devotion to the club and his relentless efforts to help out and participate. Mike was on our

executive as a trustee, namely charged with managing our social room. He was also an avid participant in our competitive

pool league and was doubles champion at one of our annual tournaments last year. He was also well known in our kitchen as

he prepared breakfasts, lunches, and dinners on a regular basis. From work parties to social functions to patronizing the

social room, Mike was always there. So much so that Mike was voted Eagle of The Year last September by his peers and a

panel of past recipients of this prestigious award. Thanks to you and the rest of your family for allowing us to say good bye in

Eagle fashion. We will truly miss our Brother!”

-An admiring Brother

We all have stories about our time spent with Mike, those stories all have a consistent theme and are an attestment to the

man he was. Mike taught us all and touched our lives with compassion, genuine concern, humor, love, and respect. Mike will

be forever loved and missed.

Rock’n August 2014

Rock'n August 2014 celebrated its 18th year of operation as the

finest festival of Cars and Music in Western Canada and the City of

St. Albert's third largest annual event. A number of years ago, the

Cosmopolitan Clubs of St. Albert, Edmonton and Sturgeon wanted

to create a fundraiser for Diabetes Research and Education. They

decided that classic cars and the sounds of the fifties and sixties

was the perfect mix and Rock'n August was born.

The primary goal of Rock'n August is to continue to be a significant

contributor to diabetes research and education. The Alberta

Diabetes Foundation at the University of Alberta has set the

international benchmark for treatment of diabetes with Islet Cell

Transplantation.

It takes a lot of volunteers, dedication, and hard work to make this

prestigious event the huge success it has become. The Eagles

club is proud to support and sponsor this amazing event.

Volunteers worked tirelessly, had a ton of fun, and were honoured

to participate.

We salute all the volunteers who contributed their time and

spirit!!!! Without volunteers it wouldn’t be possible.
