The Bigger Picture

Our programs naturally touch a child and their family in a simple, yet high-impact way that no medical treatments or procedures could possibly do. We offer relief and support in immediate, tangible ways through the love, support and friendship that evolves from the adoption process.

Our programs also have the ability to deeply impact student athletes, coaches and their fans within their communities. The interaction with their adoptee is often their first glimpse into a world that reminds them how fragile life can be and how strong one can be in the face of adversity.

The strength, courage and resilience the child demonstrates often motivates and inspires athletes and teams to levels they had not known, often exposing them to ‘giving back’ for the first time in their young adult life. Many athletes comment on how small their own troubles seem in comparison to what their adopted child faces. This helps put life’s issues in perspective as well as helping understand what is truly meaningful to them.

This ripple effect reaches far and wide as it spreads awareness about pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers on a larger scale. The many life-changing relationships and stories that have been

born out of FoJ adoptions are now touching thousands globally. Countless videos and stories showcase the unique relationships that are developed through FoJ programs.

How you can help todayEngaging your business or organization with the FoJ mission will deeply resonate within athletic communities and their extensive fan base, displaying a natural extension of goodwill.

By helping more children and teams to participate in FoJ, our supporters help form a nationwide generation of socially aware and supportive individuals and groups.

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children and their families with pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers while spreading awareness about these diseases.

How do we do this? FoJ pairs children and their families battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers with college and high school sports teams as well as clubs. The teams give these children love, support and friendship as they fight this devastating disease. We celebrate each day by creating lasting relationships between student athletes, the child, and their families. This greatly improves the quality of life for children with brain tumors, as well as those who support them.

VisionThe Friends of Jaclyn Foundation has a global vision to provide every child suffering from a brain tumor and other childhood cancers, the opportunity to receive love and support as they struggle through their everyday challenges.

FoJ seeks to immediately impact the child’s life in valuable and constructive ways that will alter their outlook about their situation, whereby giving them hope and courage to fight these diseases. In turn, the athletes gain a different perspective about life and compassion - the gift of caring for others.

Jaclyn’s Story

The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FoJ) is a magical story about a 9-year-old girl, a start-up Division I women’s lacrosse team, and a big dream.

In 2004, 9-year-old Jaclyn Murphy was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor.

In 2005, through chance of events, Jaclyn became connected to and later adopted as an honorary member of the Northwestern Women’s lacrosse team. Jaclyn’s strength, courage, relentless spirit and joy for life inspired the players. The team began to play for Jaclyn and achieved a magical “perfect season”, winning Northwestern’s first NCAA national championship in 64 years. Just three years after the program started, Jaclyn even predicted the final score, 13-10, in the championship final. Jaclyn inspired the team to go on to win 7 consecutive

Division I NCAA national titles.

Soon after Jaclyn shared a big dream with her father—she wanted other sick children to have the same opportunity to be an honorary team member. The Murphys understood that it is ultimately the love, support and friendship of others that give people the inspiration and courage to get through this challenging journey.

The Dream became a reality and a new foundation was born.

In 2005, The Murphy Family started The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FoJ) to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with college and high school athletic teams and clubs

“Every single person on the team came to see him getting ready (for surgery), it was really emotional, for us, to see how much they cared. And some of them were emotional, too. It’s been just such a wonderful blessing to have them.” - Brande, Bennett’s Mom, Rice Men’s Tennis

“The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation and the Loyola Women’s Lacrosse Team have made such a positive impact in not only Kara’s life but on our entire family. When I witness the love, joy and happiness on Kara’s face when she is with her Team and Coaches on and off the field, even during some of the toughest moments in our lives, it is something that I will forever be grateful for! This team has become more then a team to us; The Hounds have become our friends, Kara’s sisters and now an extension to our family! I am excited that they will forever be a huge part of Kara’s life and that they will be there as a team to watch her grow up, to be there pushing her through the unknown and to know that they have made this little girl dream big!” - Sheri, Kara’s Mom, Loyola Women’s Lacrosse

“Despite our hesitation to let FOJ pair us with a collegiate team because we feared adding another thing to our already busy lives we didn’t want to pass on such an incredible opportunity. We are so thankful for the love and support we have received through FOJ! The bonds we have formed are life lasting. We know the positive impact is not just in our son’s life, but each of the players as well. We count down until football season at Georgetown and look forward to making even more memories with the Hoyas!” - Kristin, Jackson’s Mom, Georgetown Football

“It almost makes me feel guilty to complain about little things; people have a lot more going on than I do. It feels good to know that Joey or Mason look up to me; so I have to set a good example. It’s a very unique situation. I want to thank you and Friends of Jaclyn, for all that you do for these kids. I’ve learned so much about your organization through Joey and his family, and it’s truly wonderful how much support you guys give these children.” - Cody Kessler, Quarterback USC Football, adopted Joey

“Being a part of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation was honestly the highlight of my soccer career at UConn. It was such a humbling and eye-opening experience, and I am so glad that Quinn and her family chose us. I cannot thank them enough for the crash course in love, friendship, and support, and though I have graduated, they will always be family.” - Julie Hubbard, University of Connecticut Class of 2014, Women’s Soccer

“Our program is honored to be a partner of the Friends of Jaclyn foundation. FoJ introduced us to an incredibly courageous and dynamic young man named Gavin. We are eternally grateful for the vision and compassion of Mr. Denis Murphy and his staff who made our relationship possible. Based on our experience, I would strongly recommend the FoJ to any organization or team that was interested in getting involved.” - Jeff Tambroni, Head Coach, Penn State University Men’s Lacrosse

“As a former collegiate field hockey player and former college coach, turned career business woman, I will say that FoJ from all fronts reminds students, coaches and parents the importance of how to live in the moment and play in the moment. Jaclyn’s story has inspired our Charity by Design division at Alex and Ani and now we are able to inspire our fans through “The Elephant” bangle design. When I wear my bangle I think of Jaclyn’s story and how encouraging it is that difficult times can be used to help others. Jaclyn and her family are a true testament of what is real in a world that thrives for community change.” - Nicki Castonguay-Maher, Vice President of Charity by Design, Alex and Ani

“The work that Friends of Jaclyn does is inspirational. We have seen first-hand how the good work of this organization changes lives for the better; both from the prospective of the child paired with a team and the student athletes who learn more about that child and pediatric brain cancer.” - Chris Carlin, Sr. Marketing & Social Media Manager, The Upper Deck Company

“When the New York Yankees and the YES Network honored the Friends of Jaclyn for Hope Week 2014, we were introduced to a kind and courageous group that feels more like a family than an organization. Denis Murphy’s dedication to FOJ shines through with every word he speaks. He is the perfect champion for this cause, and he has changed the lives of dozens of ailing children in the process. It is my pleasure to say that I’ve worked with them, and an honor to say that I know them.” - E.J. Gentile III, YES Network

Our Programs

FoJ’s three programs are designed to help families cope with the many challenges they face as they fight pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers on a daily basis. Each of our programs help the individual and the family as well as bringing awareness to this devastating disease.

1. Adopt-A-Child: Pairs a child with a pediatric brain tumor or other childhood cancer with a sports team, club or community group. The team provides a unique support system that gives the child a distraction and something to look forward to as they are often feeling sick, isolated and unsure of him or herself. In addition to the physical benefits, the child receives social and emotional support.

2. Safe on the Sidelines (SOS): This program pairs sibling(s) of the afflicted child with a team of his or her own. The brother or sister of a child with cancer often feels scared and alone, and can also benefit from a team of their own.

3. Guardian Angel: Designed to help the child and family along their cancer journey including those who are entering hospice. The child and family receive emails and posts of love and support from hundreds of individuals within the FoJ network. Supporters offer caring messages of compassion, support and kindness for families going through their darkest moments.
