The essential nature of a Queenslander House is derived from a unique combination of vital characteristics relevant to construction methods, availability of materials and affordability factors at the time. The sub tropical climate of Queensland allows for relative comfort almost year round without any thermal or mechanical control. the Queenslander developed as an output of local workmanship techniques, inherent workability of the materials and its sub tropical environment, and in so doing it formed its own identity and purpose. As a typology it has achieved an integrity of form and identity that is at once simple and practical and tied to the everyday requirements of the construction and environment, but in becoming unique in the way it met these tangible characteristics became transcendent in the way which reflects our connection with place. It is this authenticity of purpose, its intractability with its time and place that carry with it its essential meaning as we dwell within its forms today, convey to us a sense of connection and identity that is unique to our place in the world. Its openness and honesty of construction might also convey to us in a practice sense what it is we like about ourselves. The design proposal attempts to respond in the same honest and straightforward way, that the Queensland Vernacular Housing did to its context, workmanship and environment, in order to contextualize the house but find its own unique form and relevance. It relies on the same questions of performance and practicality, unique to its time of design and construction. In being honest about its origins, it is hoped that the design will achieve the same timelessness of outcome, in that it is not derivative of any stylistic approach which will date and change as tastes shift, it is not trying to be trendy or edgy, or compete with other designs for attention, it provides an honest, simple statement about what it is and how it works, that relates well with its neighbours and provides a friendly and approachable elevation to the street. It attempts to imply the same ‘ethics’ at work within the process of design and construction of the Queenslander, and in this sense it hopes to find a similar connection with its place and with the people who inhabit and visit it. Perhaps the Author David Malouf describes it best: ‘they have about them the improvised air of tree houses. Airy, open, often with no doors between the rooms, they are on easy terms with breezes, with the thick foliage they break into at window level, with the lives of possums and flying foxes . . . living in them, for the most part, is like living in a reorganized forest. . .

This scheme is a ‘Pavilions’ scheme, integrating with a series of disaggregated house ‘blocks’ with sequential and separate outdoor garden and play areas. The Pavilions provide for zoning of the various functions of the House, and interweaves the outside with the inside. Operable walls allow for whole sections of wall to be lifted or pulled away, and enhance the feeling of connection with the garden and outdoors spaces. Living spaces are surrounded by water, with views over to lush garden spaces. This encourages relaxed, casual interaction with the outside. It might be possible to jump in for a swim from the kitchen after breakfast, or watch the kids swimming while relaxing with guests in the formal lounge. All living spaces face north and the separation of pavilions allows for sun to enter at various times throughout the day. Bedrooms are provided northern frontage with views down to the pool, garden spaces below and district views beyond. Roof sections over the lower floor are put to good use as entertaining areas and private outdoor garden spaces for quiet reflection. A large format, special and unique pool is proposed that surrounds the living spaces and interweaves with three of the four ground floor pavilions. This provides for passive surveillance of the pool and casual interaction, is inviting and encourages usage, cools outside air as it moves about the house, and provides for tranquil views and a rested feeling from within. At night the pool will sparkle with mystery and reflection. Flexible, Foldaway or Lift-away Walls allow the house to open up to outside and to ‘breathe’, provide a dynamic and changeable feeling to the interior and can be adjustable based on the mood or the weather.

Bilga Crescent House: Little Bay: Private Client

This permeable design seeks to engage with its natural surrounds. Floating over the sloping terrain, it touches the earth lightly while remaining grounded and connected with its location and surrounds. The horizontal plinths strike a reference to classic modernist design from the 1960’s and 70’s, a reference to the original Pettit and Sevitt Residence located on the site.

This wonderful siting for this house provides inspiration for its composition. With views overlooking Little Bay in Malabar, Sydney, the Client aspired to at once define privacy as well as access to these wonderful views. Working with the existing residence, and making substantial strategies alterations and new build components, proved something of a challenge in developing an appropriate architectural response. The building proposes to include section of green roof and a roof deck, for whale-watching. Large, multi-purpose spaces are incorporated to the design to allow for changes in use over time.

This preliminary scheme for the Bilga Crescent site, incorporates the whole of the existing house to the new design, incorporating pavilions to the north and south of the existing house, and providing a range of interstitial spaces to stitch the house together. The various pavilions also stagger to realise a range of views from within the house. The original house is a Pettit and Sevitt House, characterised as an effort by contemporary architects of the time to enrich the Australian Project Home vernacular. ‘…Despite its ubiquity, suburban living has always attracted critics. For many years the cultural and aesthetic consequences of suburban living formed the focus of criticism. Many of Australia's best architectural minds struggled with the problem of creating pleasing and functional houses from limited budgets, space and materials. The project home industry was founded from this struggle. The interface between professional design and popular buildings is one of the most contentious areas of architectural history, while the small cottage was for many years the favoured genre for architectural experimentation. ‘.... During the 1960s and 1970s some of Australia's best-known architects - including Robin Boyd, Harry Seidler and Ken Woolley - applied their talents to small project homes. The result was a rare marriage between high design and popular taste, producing some of Australia's most distinctive and sought-after homes’.
