Robert Morris Football Game Notes
29
Top Story - The Robert Morris University football team hits the road for the final time this sea- son as it makes the short jaunt east this Saturday, Nov. 14, as it resumes Northeast Conference (NEC) play by taking on Saint Francis at Noon at DeGol Field. RMU got back into the win column last week and did so with some flair for the dramatic as the Colonials scored the go-ahead touch- down in the final four minutes to take down East Tennessee State. Saint Francis is celebrating Senior Day Saturday and will seek to collect its third straight win as it downed Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut in the past two weeks. Nick Faraci started his 42nd consecutive game at center last Saturday and now owns the most career starts of any non-specialist in RMU history. Redshirt freshman Kyle Buss posted 138 receiving yards in last week’s win, becoming the fourth Colonial to have at least three 100-yard receiving outings in a season. Forrest Mason needs one sack to move into the top three all-time at RMU in that category. Robert Morris will return home for its season finale next weekend against Bryant Nov. 21, as the Colonials celebrate Senior Day. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - The selection of true freshman quarterback Mathew Barr as the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week this past Monday represented the latest in a long line of Colonial weekly honorees. Barr’s NEC accolade was the 10th collected by a Colonial in 2015, which is the most for Robert Morris in a year since the 2000 team captured 11 en route to an undefeated season. The RMU single-season record for NEC weekly accolades is 13, which came in 1998 on the strength of Tim Levcik (1998-2001) racking up seven rookie honors. The most impressive part about this season’s individual awards for RMU is how many Colonials have been recognized. Barr became the eighth different Colonial to earn a weekly award in 2015, breaking the program record for distinct number of student-athletes to win weekly honors in a season. Four of RMU’s eight honorees are freshmen, and only one of the eight is a senior. Saturday's Opponent - Saint Francis is one of just three opponents Robert Morris faced in each of the first 21 years the Colonials fielded an intercollegiate program, joining fellow NEC foes Central Connecticut State and Wagner. All-time the Colonials are 15-5-1 (.738) against the Red Flash. Despite RMU dominating in the all-time series, Saint Francis has had its way lately as it has won each of the past three meetings. Three of the Colonials’ five losses to Saint Francis have come in November, including each of the past two. For more information on the all-time series against Saint Francis, including the last game recap, please see page four of today’s game notes. On This Date (Nov. 14) in Robert Morris Football History - Robert Morris has played on two previous instances on this date, picking up one win and one loss. Unlike this week, both of those affairs were home games. The most recent time RMU competed on this date came in its 2009 home finale against Wagner. The Colonials and Seahawks were deadlocked, 10-10, at the half with the guests enjoying a slight edge in most statistical categories. However, things changed drastically in the final two quarters as RMU scored 27 unanswered points to close the game. Robert Morris held Wagner to just 61 total yards in the second half and finished the day with a 422-286 advantage in total yards. Myles Russ (2007-10) ran for 173 yards on just 19 carries, averaging a career-best 9.1 yards per rush. Jeff Sinclair (2009-12) threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over. Michael Landers (2007-10) led all players with 12 stops while Michael Richards (2008-10) tallied the game’s lone turnover with an interception. 2015 Robert Morris Football Game Notes @ Saint Francis (11/14/15) - Page 3

Head Coach John BanaszakSecond Season - Eastern Michigan ’75

John Banaszak became the second head football coach in Robert Morris University history in December 2013. He served as an assistant coach and assistant head coach for the Colonials for 11 consecutive years prior to taking over the top spot. Banaszak was selected as Coach-In-Waiting in January 2012, allowing for a simple transition following the 2013 campaign. At the end of the 2013 season, he was named as the Assistant Coach of the Year at the FCS level as selected by the American Football Coaches Association. He was one of five coaches selected for dedication to their teams and communities. He was the first RMU coach, as well as the first from the NEC, to claim this honor. The 2013 season was Banaszak's sixth and final as assistant head coach for Robert Morris. Among his

numerous duties with the program before becoming head coach, he was responsi-ble for tutoring the defensive line and the special teams unit. Under Banaszak's guidance in 2013, Robert Morris led the NEC in net punting, punt return defense and punt return average. Banaszak was also a key component in instructing a RMU defense that finished second in the NEC in total defense within league play in 2013. Robert Morris finished its regular season ranked among the top 25 nationally in at least seven defensive categories including total defense. With Banaszak's assistance, RMU has led the NEC in total defense four times in the past 11 years and ranked among the top four nine times in the past 12 seasons. Banaszak was a key component to a 2010 defense that led the NEC in total defense as the Colonials claimed the NEC's inaugural berth in the FCS Playoffs. In 2006, he helped tutor an RMU defense that led I-AA in total defense, allowing an average of just 228.36 yards per game. 10 of the 13 players in school history to earn All-NEC recognition on the defensive line have come under the tutelage of Banaszak, including Nolan Nearhoof (2009-12), who was named the 2012 NEC Defensive Player of the Year after breaking both the school and league records for career sacks. Nearhoof would go on to earn All-America honors, becoming the third Colonial defensive lineman to claim an All-America nod under Banaszak in a seven-year span. As much as Banaszak's presence has been felt on the defensive side of the ball, the same can be said on special teams. He helped five distinct Colonials win an award at return specialist within the span of one decade. A graduate of Eastern Michigan, Banaszak signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 1975 season and was one of only three rookies to make the defending Super Bowl champion team out of training camp. Primarily a special teams player on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl X championship team, Banaszak started five games the following season and then started at both right end and inside tackle in 1977 before suffering a knee injury that forced him to the injured reserve list. Between 1978 and 1980, Banaszak started 45 regular-season games at defensive end as the Steelers won back-to-back Super Bowls. In Super Bowl XIII, Banaszak recorded six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and a fumble recovery in a 35-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys, which garnered him Defensive Player of the Game honors. The following year, Banaszak helped the Steelers to a 31-19 victory over the Rams.

SFU Series Quick OutsThe 2011 meeting represented the first-ever home night game for the Colonials … After giving up more than 20 points just once in its first 19 matchups with the Red Flash, Saint Francis has surpassed that mark in its past two games against RMU … Neither team has played a turn-over-free game against the other since 2001 when both teams did not turn the ball over … In the past eight meetings, each team has surpassed 400 total yards only once (RMU in 2011 & SFU in 2014) … This is the third consecutive season in which the meeting between these teams has served as the home finale for one squad.

Joe Walton Stadium (Attendance: 1,046) - Robert Morris grabbed an early lead against Saint Francis but was unable to hold on and dropped a 40-7 decision in NEC action. The Red Flash, who was coming off of a bye week, notched their fifth win against RMU in 21 tries. Senior Ryan Thermil carried the ball 17 times for 100 yards while senior linebacker Mike Stojkovic tallied a game-high 12 tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Robert Morris received the opening kickoff and marched into Red Flash territory before hav-ing to face a fourth down. Senior Tony LaMancusa then pinned the guests inside their own 10-yard line on a fine boot that was downed. The RMU defense then forced a three-and-out, and the Colonials returned the ensuing punt to the SFU 8-yard line. Three plays later, sophomore Luke Brumbaugh found junior tight end Justin Kempka in the front left corner of the end zone to open the scoring. After each team punted, Stojkovic pounced on a fumble at the Saint Francis 45-yard line. RMU moved 19 yards before a fourth down rush came up just short on the penultimate play of the first quarter. A pair of punts followed before SFU scored on its next two drives to take its first lead. The Colonials' hole then got deeper when they fumbled on a kickoff return, which led to a Red Flash field goal. Robert Morris moved into Saint Francis territory on its next drive before a turnover led to a Red Flash field goal drive to end the first half. After SFU scored on the first drive of the third quarter, Robert Morris marched right down the field and appeared to have scored on its first possession of the half with a six-yard rush. However, the officials ruled that a fumble by the Colonial ballcarrier came before he broke the plane of the goal line. The Red Flash used the momentum of the call to reassert control for the remainder of the quarter. Sophomore linebacker Jimmy Masson provided a highlight for the Colonials on the first pos-session of the fourth quarter as he dropped back into coverage and picked off the Red Flash quarterback, notching the first interception of his career. Saint Francis would hit two field goals during the final stanza. RMU moved into Red Flash territory on its final drive but ran out of time before it could find the end zone. Austin Trgovcich and Ryan Richards Jr. each contributed nine tackles. The former added 1.5 tackles for loss while the latter notched two pass breakups.

Robert Morris Quick FactsLast Time Out - A strong defensive effort and two touchdowns in the game's final four minutes led Robert Morris to a come-from-behind, 21-9, victory over East Tennessee State in its non-conference finale … Jake Tkach led all players with 14 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack … Forrest Mason tied his career highs in both tackles (9) and sacks (2.5) … Mike Stojkovic forced his third fumble of the season … Craig Thompson’s 5-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter was the first score of his career … Cole Blake posted the first rushing touchdown of his career to put the game out of reach ... Grant Lanza ended the game with his first-career sack.

Limiting Factor - Last Saturday was the third time in five games that the Robert Morris defense kept the opposition under 300 yards of total offense as ETSU compiled only 236. RMU held the Bucs without a touchdown and allowed one scoring drive over 30 yards. The Colonials also limited the Bucs to a season-low 2.0 yards per carry.

Barr None - True freshman Mathew Barr was the second straight Colonial to be named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Monday. Barr was efficient at the helm in leading RMU to a win last week. He completed a season-high 20 passes on just 31 attempts (64.5%) while throwing for a season-best 225 yards. He tossed two touch-down passes without throwing an interception. Barr threw an 84-yard bomb that was caught in stride for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Stock Watch - Mike Stojkovic was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year Oct. 5. He led RMU with 11 stops in its win at Wagner and had earned his first honor after helping limit nationally ranked Youngstown State Sept. 12, as he posted 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble against the Penguins. He has hit double digits in stops in six of nine games this season and totaled 7.5 TFL. Stojkovic is currently second in the league in tackles per game (8.7).

Just For Kicks - RMU has done well at covering its kickoffs thus far in 2015. Junior Connor Shennan has tallied 16 touchbacks on 31 attempts, the highest percentage in the NEC. However, even when his kicks have not resulted in touchbacks, RMU is holding its opponents to just 14.4 yards per return, the second best mark in the FCS.

The Right Gear - Safety Andy Smigiera has demonstrated an ability to knock down the football this year, be it on special teams or defense. The junior ranks third in the league, and among the top 40 in the FCS, in passes defended (1.11 per game). He has notched a pass breakup or an interception in seven of nine games this season. Additionally, he has blocked two kicks while notching 44 total tackles on the year.

Dante's Peak - True freshman Dante Satcher claimed Special Teams Player of the Week honors from the NEC Oct. 12 after returning a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown against Sacred Heart. It was the fourth kickoff return for a touchdown in program history, but it was the longest one of the quartet. It also stands as the second-longest touchdown of any type in RMU history and the longest since 1996. With his award, RMU became the first school in league history to win the special teams honor in four straight releases.

Break It Up - The median completion percentage across the FCS in 2014 was 57.6%. Robert Morris has allowed only three of its past 27 opponents to reach that mark. In fact, nine times in this stretch, the Colonials have held their opponent under a 45% rate. In each of the past two seasons, RMU had a stretch where it held its opponent under a 50% completion mark in three straight games.

Sack Master - Redshirt junior Austin Trgovcich had a monster game Oct. 10 as he notched career highs in tackles (12), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (2.5). Trgovcich leads the league in tackles per game among defensive linemen (6.4) and is second over-all in the NEC in sacks per game (0.71). He is currently out due to an injury.

Start Me Up - Nick Faraci enters Saturday's game with the most consecutive starting assignments of all active Colonials as he has served as the center for 42 straight games. On defense, Marcelis Branch has the most total starts among active Colonials with 29, but Andy Smigiera and Mike Stojkovic are tied for the longest active streak (20).

Game #9 • Robert Morris 21, East Tennessee State 9November 7, 2015 • Moon Township, Pa.

Joe Walton Stadium (Attendance: 1,174) - A strong defensive effort and two touchdowns in the game's final four minutes led Robert Morris to a come-from-behind, 21-9, victory over East Tennessee State. RMU crossed midfield on the game's opening drive before punt-ing. Neither team picked up a first down on the next two drives. Robert Morris got the ball back when it forced a turnover on downs with a sack. The Colonials drove to the ETSU 36-yard line before a fourth down rush was stopped short. The Bucs then put together a drive and had first-and-goal. However, Mike Stojkovic came up big as he broke up a third down pass. ETSU got on the board with a 25-yard field goal. After a short Colonial punt, the Bucs needed to drive just 26 yard to double their lead with another field goal. ETSU then took over in RMU territory after a fumble, but the Colonial defense forced a punt by allowing -4 yards on that drive. A punt by each team followed, including a 62-yard boot by RMU. Mathew Barr then caught fire as he led the team on a nine-play, 65-yard drive. The rookie was 7-for-8 on the sequence. Barr found Craig Thompson for a 5-yard touchdown right before halftime. RMU only let ETSU reach the Bucs' 31-yard line on the opening drive of the second half. The Colonials then moved the ball into Bucs territory before having their punt blocked. ETSU took advantage of the good field position as it needed to drive just 21 yards to connect on a go-ahead 29-yard field goal. Each of the game's next four drives ended in punts, practically bringing the game into the fourth quarter. RMU reached midfield on its next drive before a receiver fumbled after making a reception. The Colonial defense again would not let the Bucs make good on the takeaway as it held the guests to -3 yards on the ensuing drive, forcing a punt. Each of the game's next four drives ended in punts. Robert Morris took over on its own 16-yard line with under four minutes to play. Barr threw a bomb down the left sideline that Kyle Buss caught in stride, and he raced untouched into the end zone. RMU held the Bucs on the following drive as the Colonials notched three sacks on the sequence to turn the ball over on downs. Robert Morris wasted little time tacking on an insurance score as Cole Blake found the end zone with a 12-yard rush. ETSU netted just nine yards on four plays on its final drive as Grant Lanza ended the contest fittingly with a sack.

Last RMU GameTkach Attack - Redshirt senior linebacker Jake Tkach has come on strong in recent weeks. After posting a team-leading 84 tackles a year ago, Tkach seems to have reached a new level since the beginning of October. The veteran has tallied 62 tackles in the last five games, including a career-high 16 Oct. 10. He has now hit double figures in stops in four of the past five games and six times overall in his career. As a result, Tkach has leapt ahead of his teammate and now ranks first in the league in tackles per game (9.4).

Protect This Backfield - The RMU offensive line did not allow a single sack Sept. 26 at No. 6 South Dakota State. It marked the first non-conference game in which RMU did not allow a sack since its 2006 season opener and was the first time ever RMU did not yield a sack when facing a ranked team.

Sack Attack - Robert Morris contributed 9.0 sacks in last week’s win over East Tennessee State. That stands as the second-most in RMU history and the highest such figure against a Division I foe. That effort increased RMU's sea-son sack total to 28, the sixth highest figure in single-season program histo-ry. The Colonials finished with 13.0 tackles for loss against the Buccaneers, which is the sixth time in program history they reached that figure in a game.

Long Rush Trio - In its two road games Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, the Robert Morris offense produced three rushes of at least 50 yards. That equaled the number of 50+ yard rushes that RMU combined for in the five seasons from 2010-14. The three lengthy runs came from the feet of three Colonials with Mathew Barr, Cole Blake and Dante Satcher each contributing one. In fact, this is only the second season ever, and the first since 1996, in which three distinct Colonials have each posted a rush of 50+ yards.

Knock It Down - Through the first nine games of the 2015 season, the RMU defense has tallied 40 pass breakups, notching at least four in eight games. That puts the Colonials in range of the single-season school record of 49 pass breakups. 11 different Colonials have contributed to this mark with junior Andy Smigiera and sophomore Drew Allen leading the way with eight.

Don't Be Offensive - Through nine games, Robert Morris has scored five non-offensive touchdowns. It has scored twice via an interception and also from a kick return, a punt return and a blocked punt. The school record for non-offensive TD in a season is six. Interestingly, all five of its unique touchdowns this season have come in home games.

Initial Impressions - A number of RMU players have accrued a ‘first’ in 2015. 11 Colonials have made their first collegiate start through nine games. Eight of those 11 are part of a group of 17 Colonials that have made their collegiate deubt in 2015. A total of 27 Colonials made their first career start a year ago while 35 Colonials made their collegiate debut in 2014.

Rookie Records - Kyle Buss caught nine passes for 138 yards in last week’s win. In surpassing the 100-yard mark for the second straight game, and third time in 2015, Buss broke the RMU rookie record for both single-season recep-tions and receiving yards. His 661 receiving yards on the year, which are tied for fifth overall in RMU single-season history, place him third among all freshmen at the FCS level.

Seeing Red - Robert Morris finished the 2013 campaign ranked among the top 25 in the FCS in red zone defense, allowing opponents to convert at a .735 clip. After a one-year hiatus, the Colonials have improved that mark thus far this season. RMU’s foes are converting on their red zone chances at a .722 clip. More impressively, Robert Morris has allowed a touchdown only 38.9% (14-of-36) of the time its opponent has reached the red zone. The Colonials have not posted a better such mark since 2006.

STATS FCS Top 25

NEC Champions since 1996

Third Degree - Robert Morris finished the 2013 campaign ranked among the top 25 in the FCS in third down defense, allowing opponents to convert at a .349 clip. The Colonials managed to improve that figure to .331 in 2014 although that placed them one spot outside the top 25. RMU has raised its game to a new level so far this season as it ranks among the top 15 nationally. For the season, RMU’s foes are 48-for-155 (.310) on third down, as the Colonials lead the league in third down defense.

Special Special Teams - Warren Robinson was named the NEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week Sept. 21. The rookie returned three punts for 89 yards Sept. 19, including a 66-yard return for a touchdown. It marked only the fourth punt return for a TD in RMU history, but it was the first ever by a freshman. In fact, he is one of only two true fresh-men among the 123 FCS programs to return a (non-blocked) punt for a touchdown in 2015. Robinson’s 66-yard scamper was the second longest punt return in RMU history. He leads the NEC and ranks among the top 10 in the FCS in punt return average (14.9).

Long And Short of It - The Robert Morris defense has refused to let opponents drive the length of the field for scores in recent weeks. The Colonials have allowed only three scoring drives over 50 yards in their past five games. 14 of the last 17 drives RMU has yielded that produced points have been under 50 yards.

Making the Grade - Redshirt senior offensive lineman Nick Faraci and junior defensive back Andy Smigiera were both named Academic All-District First Team last week. As a result of their first-team selections, both Colonials advanced to the Academic All-America ballot. This is the third straight year that Faraci has earned this honor and the first such award for Smigiera, as they continued the trend of academic successes in the football program. These two accolades gave the Colonial program at least one Academic All-District honoree in each of the past 13 seasons, a span in which Robert Morris has taken home 25 overall selections. To put that in perspective, no other NEC school has an active streak of football Academic All-District selections longer than four years.

Not Halfway Home – Entering the 2015 season, the team trailing at the half had won only 13.5% of games all-time in Robert Morris history. However, the team losing at the break in RMU’s games this season has a solid 5-3 record.

Times Two - One of the mainstays that returned to the RMU defense in 2015 is redshirt senior Forrest Mason. Mason earned his second straight All-NEC honor in 2014, making him just one of five Colonials ever to claim multiple all-league honors as a defensive lineman. What made that accolade even more impressive is that the league’s coaches voted him to the team despite the fact that he was only able to appear in seven games. Mason is second in the NEC in tackles/game among defensive linemen (5.8) and leads the league in sacks (0.72). He returned his first career interception for a TD Sept. 19.

They'll Be Back - One interesting way to examine the state of the Colonial roster is to look at the number of players that started the season opener who will be finished with their careers after this season. Of RMU’s 22 offensive and defensive starters from its opener, only five Colonials—two on offense, three on defense—will have used all of their NCAA eligibility when the 2015 campaign is completed.

Wrap Him Up – One game after Jake Tkach posted a career-best 16 tackles, Gerald Ferguson tallied 15 against Duquesne Oct. 24. It marked the first time since 2009 that multiple Colonials contributed 15+ tackle efforts in one season. It was the first time since 2007 that two Colonials achieved the feat in back-to-back games within a season.

The Nurse Will See You - RMU's starting center, redshirt senior Nick Faraci, became the fifth Colonial in school history, and the first on the offensive side of the ball, to earn a prestigious Academic All-America award this past December. However, that may not even be his most impressive feat. Faraci graduated from RMU in May with the highest grade point average in his nursing class. He subsequently passed his nursing board exams in the summer to earn his registered nurse (RN) license. Faraci, who owns a 3.94 cumulative GPA, worked in four area hospitals as part of his clinical rotations over the past few years.

No Passing Zone - The Robert Morris defense did well in keeping opposing offenses from mov-ing the ball through the air near the end zone last year. The Colonials grabbed eight intercep-tions in 2014 within 20 yards of the end zone they were defending. RMU has tallied five such picks in the first nine games of 2015, giving it 13 grabs inside its own 20 in its past 20 games. Seven Colonials have contributed to that mark with Andy Smigiera leading the way with five.

The Third Phase - Connor Shennan is a two-time winner of the Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award in 2015. The junior was 3-for-3 on field goals Oct. 3, including connecting on the game-winner in the final minute. Shennan had reset his career-long with a 46-yarder the week prior while drilling two of three kickoffs for touchbacks. Shennan recently took over punting duties, due to an injury, and has averaged 41.5 yards on 13 attempts.

D-Fence - The Robert Morris defense limited two-time defending champion Sacred Heart Oct. 10. RMU, which allowed only one scoring drive over 45 yards, kept the Pioneers under 300 yards of offense, which has happened only twice in SHU’s past 25 games. The Colonials also held SHU to a season-low 1.6 yards per carry and 70 overall rushing yards. That is the Pioneers’ second-lowest rushing total in their past 36 games.

The Full Length - The 84-yard touchdown pass caught by Kyle Buss in last week’s win stands as the fourth-longest in RMU history and the longest ever in a non-conference contest. It also gave RMU two 70+ yard touchdowns in a season for the first time in 10 years.

Behind Enemy Lines - Robert Morris tallied 8.0 sacks Oct. 3 at Wagner, the most by a Colonial team in nine years. In their other eight games this year, the Seahawks have allowed only 21 total sacks. That effort helped RMU hold Wagner to 170 yards of total offense, the Seahawks' lowest such output in their past 10 games against FCS foes. It marked the first time RMU held an opponent to a single-digit point total on the road since September 2010, also at Wagner.

Ground Game - Robert Morris posted a sizeable advantage in rushing yards Sept. 26 at No. 6 South Dakota State (228-125). This was due in large part to the Colonials averaging 6.0 yards per carry compared to 3.5 for the Jackrabbits. It marked the 14th time in program history, but just the fourth since 2000, in which a Colonial team averaged at least 6.0 yards per carry. That effort helped RMU rush for 200+ yards in back-to-back games for the first time since 2010.

Robert Morris in the 2015 NEC StatsThe Founding Father - The one constant in the first two decades of Colonial football was former head coach Joe Walton. Walton, the former NFL tight end and head coach of the New York Jets, started the program from scratch, com-pleting everything from hiring assistants to purchasing equipment. He was named NEC Coach of the Year four times in 18 seasons and guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns during his time on the side-lines. Walton, currently a special assistant to the athletic director at Robert Morris, was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in November 2013.

Get To The Chopper - A quick glance at RMU’s record when broken down proves how important it is the Colonials get off to a good start in contests. When Robert Morris is leading at halftime, the program owns an all-time record of 90-16 (.849). When trailing at the break, Robert Morris owns a mark of 15-82-1 (.158). Even going into halftime tied is beneficial, as the Colonials own an overall record of 14-10 (.583) in such games.

The Magic Mark - Since the Colonials began play in 1994, there have been 77 games in which Robert Morris has scored 30 or more points. In those contests RMU boasts a record of 72-5 (.935), including a record of 43-5 (.896) in games in which the team scores between 30 and 39 points. In games in which the Colonials score 40 or more points, RMU is a perfect 29-0.

RMU Football Historical Tidbits - The inaugural running back at Robert Morris, the late Tim Hall (1994-95), rushed for 2,908 yards in his two seasons as a Colonial. Hall still owns the FCS season and career records for yards per carry, with his season record of 8.7 yards per carry set in 1994 and his two-year career record of 7.4 established in 1994 and 1995 ... Hall also ranks fourth all-time in the FCS in both rushing yards per game (153.1) and all-purpose yards per game (194.8) ... Former Colonial linebacker James Noel (2002-05) ranks sixth in the FCS record book for career tackles per game (10.7), while his career tackle total of 437 takedowns ranks 15th all-time ... Former linebacker and assistant coach Alex DiMichele (2008-10) averaged 10 tackles per game over his three years in a Robert Morris uniform, which ranks 13th all-time in the FCS record book ... Robert Morris has topped the nation in passing defense twice in the past 16 years, based on passing effi-ciency defense rating. The Colonials topped the charts in 1999 (with a 80.80 rating) as well as in 2006 (with a 88.70 rating).

Did You Know? - Robert Morris owns the all-time FCS record for the most consecutive quarters while holding an opponent scoreless. During the 1996 season, the Colonials went 15 straight quarters without allowing a single point. In fact, the record-setting streak occurred at the beginning of the sea-son. RMU posted three straight shutouts -- 20-0 against Mercyhurst (9/7), 38-0 against Butler (9/14) and 7-0 against Towson State (9/21) -- to open the campaign and then held Central Connecticut State (9/28) scoreless for the first three quarters before finally allowing a point for the first time all sea-son. In all, Robert Morris went 234:04 before allowing a point in 1996. RMU went 9-2 (.818) in 1996, claiming a share of the NEC championship, and con-ceded just 12.9 points per game.

Robert Morris CaptainsHead coach John Banaszak announced after the team's final scrimmage that four Colonials will serve as captains in the 2015 season.

OFFENSERedshirt senior Nick Faraci and senior Max Robertson are the team’s captains on offense. Faraci has started each of RMU’s past 42 games at center and was selected as an Academic All-American in 2014. Robertson started 31 games at left guard over the past three seasons, but he was shifted down a spot to left tackle prior to the 2015 season.

DEFENSERedshirt seniors Forrest Mason and Mike Stojkovic are the team’s captains on defense. Mason is a two-time All-Northeast Conference honoree and is one of just five defensive lineman in RMU history to earn multiple all-league honors. He owns 139 tackles and 16.0 sacks in his career. He became the first Colonial defensive lineman to be named NEC Defensive Player of the Week in over 15 years last October. Stojkovic, who served as a captain in the latter half of the 2014 season, was ranked among the top five in the league in tackles per game last year and totaled 82 stops. He owns 178 tackles and 19.0 tackles for loss in a Colonial uniform. The Texas native began his col-legiate career at FBS institution North Texas.

Gameday Colonial football games are heard live on ESPN Radio AM-970 Pittsburgh, the flagship station of Robert Morris University athletics. ESPN 970 and RMU reached a three-year agreement in the summer of 2013 to broadcast foot-ball, men’s basketball and men’s hockey games. The Voice of the Colonials, Chris Shovlin, and color analyst Brian Cleary call the football action. RMU Assistant Media Relations Director Spencer Kowitz joins Shovlin as color analyst for select Colonial road games. "The John Banaszak Show" is on 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Games can also be heard on the station’s website, www.970espn.com, as well as on iHeartRadio. RMU home and league games can generally be seen live for free on NEC Front Row, the conference’s online digital network. The league has added multiple upgrades in recent years, including the ability to transmit live events in HD as well as providing the ability for the viewer to use a DVR-style, in-game real-time rewind feature. Robert Morris also had four games that aired on ESPN3 in 2015: 9/12 @ Youngstown State, 9/26 @ South Dakota State, 10/10 vs. Sacred Heart and 10/31 @ Central Connecticut State.Weekly Segments Coach Banaszak sits down for a weekly chat with play-by-play voice Chris Shovlin most Mondays at the All Star Sports Bar & Grill in either Robinson or Canonsburg. Their discussion is aired live on ESPN 970 from 8-9 p.m. Coach Banaszak also has a weekly segment on TribLIVE Radio that generally can be heard on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. A Colonial student-athlete is sometimes featured on ESPN 970 during a weekday afternoon.

Colonials in the NFLSince Robert Morris played its first season in 1994, three former Colonials have appeared in a game in the National Football League (NFL), the most among current NEC members in this span as of August 2015. Many players have “rewritten” record books at various schools. At Robert Morris, however, Tim Hall wrote the record book. Hall rushed for 2,908 yards on 393 carries in his two seasons in a Colonial uniform and was named an All-American by the Associated Press in 1995. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round (183rd player overall) in the 1996 NFL Draft. In 1997, he led the Raiders in yards per carry average with 5.2 and was second in rushing yards to Napolean Kaufman. On Sept. 30, 1998, Hall was shot and killed in Kansas City at age 24. Hank Fraley, who played on the offensive line for Robert Morris from 1996-1999, carved out a niche for himself in the NFL for over a decade. Fraley was a three-time Mid-Major All-American during his years at RMU before he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a free-agent contract in April 2000. Fraley was later claimed by the Eagles and started at center for Philadelphia for the entire 2001 season, helping the team to the 2002 NFC Championship game. For four straight seasons with Fraley starting at center from 2002-05, the Eagles appeared in the NFC Championship game. In 2005, Fraley became the first RMU alum to appear in the Super Bowl when he started at center against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Former RMU defensive back Robb Butler played for the San Diego Chargers during the 2004 season and was featured in special teams situations, including returning kickoffs.
