sure sign of warmer weather is the re-appearance ofthe American hot rod. On Saturday, April 25, someof the areas best supped-up, muscled up, chopped

and dropped cars and trucks will line Mill Street and WestMain Street for the Downtown Grass Valley Car Show. This

year marks the 25th anniversary of the car show that inthe past has featured up to 300 pre-1972 classic vehicles. Some are restored to their original showroom condition

while others are definitelybuilt for speed. The freeexhibition will take placefrom 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Many downtown restau-rants will be providing var-ied menus with other mer-chants open for shopping. To learn more about theevent or to register a vehi-cle for the show contactthe Grass Valley Downtown Association at 272-8315 [email protected].

A quick hot rod history lessonHot rods are typically American cars with engines thathave been altered for speed. The origin of the term hotrod is not officially known. Some say it is a shortenedversion of hot roadster. Another explanation is thatsince many early models featured exposed exhaust sys-tems, the hot rod came from the hot muffler neck whenthe vehicle was running. The term hot rod is believed tofirst be used during the late 1930s in Southern California. The hot rods popularity increased after World War II, par-

ticularly in California, due to returning soldiers with tech-nical training in vehicle maintenance. During the 1950shot rod was sometimes used as a derogatory termdescribing any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Inthe 1960s, hot rods started to take on a more artistic look

with engine, body modifications and creative paint jobsleading to the show and shine show cars of today.

Discharge (HID) and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lightingoptions are more energy efficient than incandescent orhalogen lights. Incandescent bulbs in todays automotivelighting applications generate more heat than light,

lights, nearly theentire life of thevehicle. HID head-lights are also good

for the environ-ment. Many aremercury free andtheir increased effi-ciency helps reducevehicle CO2 emis-sions by more than2 grams a mile. Many of todays

vehicles use LEDsignal and tail light-ing. For example, the 2010 FordMustang uses theOSRAM SYLVANIAJoule(tm) System,

    which incorporatesLEDs into a form

that resembles a typical incandescent bulb, making it eas-ier to adapt the new technology to current vehicledesigns. The vehicles LED tail lamps use 87 percent lesselectricity than the incandescent counterparts; thats anannual savings of more than 10 gallons of gasoline and205 fewer pounds of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

As more hybrid and electric vehicles come to market, automotive lighting will play an even larger role in con-tributing to energy efficiency, cost savings and the overallpositive effects to the environment. Once alternativevehicles increase their role or eventually become a high-volume seller in the marketplace, the positive effects feltto the environment and costs will grow in kind throughLED lighting, said David Hulick, global product market-ing director for automotive lighting producer OSRAMSYLVANIA. For example, multiplying savings via lightingby the nearly 250 million registered light-duty vehicles on

Americas roads, you can see the impact that LED lightingcould have on helping to clean up the environment, saidHulick.
