5th Grade Summer Reading List Summer 2019

Greetings, incoming fifth graders! You are required to choose one of the following books (or one from a series) to read over the summer. Choose a book that captures your interest AND is at your reading level. Once school begins, you will have a project that ties to the novel you read. Make sure to read the

book carefully and take notes to help you remember important details.

 Fish in a Tree

 By

Lynda Mullaly Hunt

7 Accelerated Reader points

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet

disruptive distractions. However, her newest teacher

Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the

trouble maker. With his help, she discovers that there’s a lot

more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think

alike.

Because of Mr. Terupt

By Rob Buyea

 5 Accelerated Reader points

Because of Mr. Terupt is a novel about one year in the life of a fifth grade class at

Snow Hill School. Told through the eyes of seven

students, the class is deeply affected by their new teacher

Mr. Terupt and the tragic accident that touches all their

lives. This is a terrific story about friendship, acceptance,

and loyalty.

7th Grade Summer Reading

Incoming 7th grade students are required to read a book over the summer. Each student must choose one book from the list on the

backside of this page. Students will be expected to take an Accelerated Reader Test, so be sure to choose a book you have not already

read. You can read as many books as you want and take tests on any of them. I will take the highest scoring test for your grade. As you

know, you may not retake any Accelerated Reader tests. Tests may be taken at school during the summer between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00

a.m. on the dates listed below or during the first week of school. After the first week of school, no test scores will be accepted for

summer reading. The score the students earn will be recorded as a test grade for literature. Reading can begin the day you get out of

school!

Each trimester, students are assigned a genre to read for their Accelerated Reading points. This assignment is an independent reading assignment and is separate from the summer reading assignment. Books that you read and take a test on for summer reading will not count toward the independent reading assignment. Students may begin earning those points in the summer. Students are required to complete the following genres by the end of the assigned trimester. If you want to get a head start on your independent reading for the school year, you may. It is possible that you might even finish all of the independent reading that is required for the entire year. Independent reading points that a have not been earned in the summer must be completed by the dates listed below.

Required genre for 7th grade:

First trimester—Mystery and/or spy 20 points

Second trimester—Science Fiction and/or Fantasy 20 points

Third Trimester—Non-Fiction 20 points

Qualifying books must be at a grade level of 4.5 or higher. If you are not sure if it is the correct genre please check on www.arbookfind.com. Getting a verbal verification from someone who works at a bookstore or library will not work if it doesn’t have the correct genre listed on arbookfind. Books that are part of your regular curriculum may not be used for independent reading. (i.e. Catherine, Called Birdy).

The dates available for taking an AR test during the summer will be:

Thursday, June 27th Wednesday, July 3rd Friday, July 19th

Tests may be taken on campus between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Make sure to pay close attention to characters, setting, conflict and theme as you read.

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]

Thank you,
