Description on how to get from Stuttgart Airport to our institute IST
From the airport you travel by the so‐called S‐Bahn. You reach it taking the escalator down from the arrival hall, just follow the S‐signs (white S on a green circle). Make sure to get your ticket from the (grey) ticket machine before entering the S‐Bahn ‐ there are no tickets available inside or on the platform (destination: Universität Vaihingen).
Quickest way to operate the ticket machine: On the touchscreen press the yellow block (“VVS”), then the yellow bar saying “2 Zonen”. The fare is 2,70 EUR.
"Universität” is the 7th station after "Flughafen". It takes you 17 minutes to get there by S2 or S3 (direction: Backnang or Schorndorf) leaving Flughafen every 10 or 20 minutes (e.g. 10:08, 10:18, 10.38 am ..., on Sundays every 30 minutes 10:08, 10:38,…).
When you get off at “Universität” which is an underground station choose the exit "Universitätszentrum". Two long flights of stairs and a short one will lead you to the surface. Actually there are four different short ones: One to the left, two to the right, and a small one, straight ahead, which can be easily overlooked. Take the stairs to the left. Walk to the opposite building (Pfaffenwaldring 9). The entrance is behind a sculpture which looks like three rows of pink concrete benches – not too nice but at least some sort of landmark.
Inside the building turn to the right. In front of the cafeteria turn left, entering a long corridor which is interrupted by a staircase and an elevator. Go to the second floor and turn left when stepping out of the elevator. Walk along the next long corridor nearly at the end of which you will finally reach our institute turning to the right.
It takes about 5 minutes to get from the underground station to our institute.

The S‐Bahn station is an underground one just below the main station. You can reach it either from inside the main station building or from the large pedestrian underground crossing area close to the station. Just follow the S‐signs (white S on a green circle). Dining hall and cafeterias
The Student Services operate several cafés on the university campus. Cafeterias are usually open between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. The dining hall (Mensa in building No. 45 – see No. 9 on campus map) is usually open only between 11.15 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. Every day there are different dishes to choose from which cost between EUR 2 to 4. As well as providing lunch at a reasonable price, the mensa serve as general meeting points and information centres.

The domicile operated by the Studentenwerk Stuttgart is centrally located in downtown Stuttgart. Here they offer you hotel comfort for an extremely low price (prices start at 28 EUR with breakfast included). This is a very popular accommodation so you should book your room well ahead of time. You can reach the hotel as follows: From the Hauptbahnhof take the U9 in the direction of Hedelfingen or the U14 in the direction of Neckargröningen/Remseck and get off at the Stöckach stop. Walk 100 meters in the same direction of the U‐Bahn’s travel
2) Youth hostels:
Stuttgart has two youth hostels that belong to the International Youth Hostel Association Hostelling International (HI). HI membership is required; you can even acquire membership directly at the youth hostel (yearly fee for persons up to 26 years old is 12,50 EUR and 21 EUR, for persons 27 and up). The room placement as a rule takes place in a shared room. Renting a bed at either hostel for the first night for persons 26 and under costs 25,60 EUR and 30,10 EUR for persons 27 and up, and every additional night after the first night costs 22,30 EUR for those 26 and under and 26,80 EUR for those 27 and up. Host City Stuttgart The City of Stuttgart
Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden‐Württemberg, has a population of about 600.000. The city lies in a basin. The lowest point is the River Neckar, which is about 200 metres above sea‐level, and the highest is at Stuttgart‐Vaihingen at approx. 550 metres. The climate is moderate and the average annual temperature is 10 °C. The relatively warm summers and mild winters are characteristic of the Stuttgart climate. However, it is quite possible that the temperature in winter will go far below freezing‐point which makes it necessary to have winter clothes as well as rainproof clothing.
Stuttgart is the cultural centre of the state of Baden‐Württemberg with a wealth of theaters and concert halls. It is also the home of a world‐famous ballet. There are museums, art‐galleries as well as academies of music and art and a musical. Every year thousands come from far and near to enjoy the Cannstatter Volksfest, a public festival with a huge amusement park which takes place at the end of September on the common called the Cannstatter Wasen. Over the course of time this festival has become second only to the most famous in Germany, namely, the Oktoberfest in Munich.
Stuttgart is also one of the largest agriculture, fruit and viticulture centres in the Federal Republic of Germany. Many of the most renowned companies like Mercedes‐Benz and Bosch have factories here. In addition, there are numerous smaller companies involved in the production of machine tools, textiles and clothes, precision instruments, food and luxury items. There are also companies that specialise in woodworking, leather processing and making shoes and musical instruments as well as a number of large breweries. There is also a small paper and chemical industry. Over 300 publishing houses and a highly developed graphic industry has given Stuttgart the reputation of being one of Germany's most attractive "Book Towns”.
