6:00 p.m. Buffet Dinner with Keynote Speaker: Mary Ourecky’s love of textiles has a long history. She grew up in the

world of 4-H and FHA (Future Homemakers of America). As a young adult Mary nurtured her passion for sewing and

supplemented her income by sewing for special events, weddings, and dance studios. She has enjoyed working and teaching in quilt

shops, managing a Bernina store, and serving as an educator for Hancock Fabrics. She currently works for the University of

Nebraska-Lincoln at the International Quilt Museum (IQM) as their Guest Services Manager. Mary is here to present quilts from the

Museum as well as share information on how to preserve your textiles from the past and those yet to be created.

Skill level for each class:

Beginner: Must be able to thread sewing machine and wind bobbin(s) and basic knowledge of the machine you will be using.

Must have knowledge of sewing terms, be able to read a pattern, and be capable of performing basic sewing machine techniques.

Intermediate: Must have good command of sewing skills, knowledge and operation of sewing machine or serger and sewing

techniques, and be able to read and follow pattern instructions without assistance.

Advanced: Must be proficient at most sewing techniques in the subject area, including knowledge of and using

many sewing machine features.

A. Techniques for Sewing a Jean Skirt

Marjorie Baker (Intermediate Skill Level) Ever wanted to sew your own blue jeans but were intimidated by sewing on denim and/or making a fly zipper? Then this is the class to get you going! Starting with a basic jean skirt pattern or similar style skirt pattern, learn techniques for top-stitching, pocket placement, adding an inside fly shield to the fly front zipper, and more. Once you’ve learned the techniques on a simple skirt, you’ll be ready to tackle making jeans on your own. B. Quilting Tips & Techniques 101

Lynnette LeGette (Beginner & Intermediate Skill Level) Wonder why your quilt blocks are not the same size, borders are wavy, binding is not uniform width or not “filled”? Then this class is for you. Participants will be guided from preparation of the fabric through completion of the quilt. This includes cutting, sewing sashing, flange, basic borders, squaring-up, double-fold binding, and labeling. Class Fee: $35 Fee Includes: Instructions, Center squares (Different Cities), bias stripes for flange and useful tool Project Size: 14” x 14”

C. Applique 101

Angie York (Beginner Skill Level) Applique 101 is a class designed to introduce learners to machine applique, raw edge applique, turn under applique, and more. In class we will be completing a reversible apron and flour sack towel showcasing different applique techniques. Tips and tricks will be shared for helping you be successful with your project no matter the type of applique you choose. D. Michaels’ Choice

Candy Simms (Beginner Skill Level) This quilt top will challenge your piecing skills. Looking much more difficult than it is, only squares and rectangles are required to make this lap quilt/wall hanging. You will learn about Irish Chain, Surrounded to Burgoyne designs, and make nine-patch and four-patch sub-blocks. You can design a totally different look by changing the colors of squares/or rectangles within each 15” block. The quilt is easily expanded to create a beautiful bed quilt. Class is suitable for a confident beginner who can cut and sew accurate 1/4” seams. Class Fee: $28 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: 58” x 58”

E. Strippy Stripes

Jennifer Klee (Intermediate Skill Level) Whether you begin with a jelly roll or 2.5” x WOF strips from your stash, sewing strips in sets cutting into blocks and arranging them in rows makes an interesting design. Sashing and borders compliment the columns and create a delightful throw with lots of color and movement. Batiks work well, but feel free to go scrappy or choose color wave to build your quilt. G. How To Create a T-Shirt Quilt

Sheila Reinke (Beginner Skill Level) If you quilt or even sew, at some point you may be asked to make a t-shirt quilt for someone. In this class you will receive pointers on creating this personal treasure. I have created a formula for taking the guess work out of the math in making a t-shirt quilt, of all the t-shirt creations I have sewn over the years, the favorite one has been the “scrappy look” quilt top. This technique lets you use tiny to large t-shirts all in the same quilt. This class will be a combination of lecture and hands on. I. Kansas City Star/Golden Glory Quilt Block

Carol Sargent (Intermediate Skill Level) Master skills with curves and Y seams by making an old pattern taken from a 1979 magazine. This was my grandmothers favorite pattern in the 1950’s. J. Gorgeous Gift Bags & Travel Pouch

Janice Beatty (Beginner Skill Level) First, you will make: a gorgeous gift bag-the perfect size for a wine bottle or other gift. Satiny or bridal fabric will make it “fancy”. Next, you will make a handy travel pouch to use for a first aid kit, make up bag or sewing supplies. You will sew vinyl for the “windows”, put in a zipper, and learn to do an easy mitered corner with bias binding. The gift bag is a beginner serger project, but can be done on a regular machine as well, student’s choice. Class Fee: $20 Fee Includes: Pattern and vinyl for window

Mary Ourecky (Beginner Skill Level) This quilt is made of high-quality soft Minky fabric-known for it’s loft and nap. For this reason many people fear sewing with it. Learn the tricks of sewing with this fabric while completing your project in class. Bob Coon (Beginner Skill Level) Explore the basics of foundation piecing in the construction of this always popular traditional block. Add excitement to your project by incorporating a miniature version in the block. Instructions will be provided to make either a pillow, a table runner, a wall hanging or multiple sizes of quilts. N. Landscape Art Quilting

Larry McKenney (Beginner Skill Level) Have you wanted to learn how to create a landscape art quilt? Then this is the class for you. No previous experience needed. Participants will learn the basic design in creating a landscape, and then working from a basic pattern design create their own version of a landscape. We begin with the background, laying in fusible web. Next, you will quilt the background and then put in the middle ground and foreground. Before final quilting, participants will use fabric paints to add details and give dimension to their landscape. Mary Ourecky (Intermediate Skill Level) Make this fun play mat for a newborn in your life while learning the tricks of sewing with Minky cuddle fabric. You will take your skills of working with minky fabric past frustration to fun. Most pieces will be pre-cut for you so sewing will begin immediately! P. Blackwood Cardigan

Marjorie Baker (Intermediate Skill Level) The Blackwood Cardigan is a cozy and versatile addition to your wardrobe. The fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect to wear under jackets and vests or add style over tank tops and dresses. It is designed to be worn open in the front with no closure. The Blackwood Cardigan is a great pattern to learn techniques for sewing 2-way stretch, knit fabric. Make it tunic or hip length, with or without pockets. U. Two Charms and a Jelly Roll

Elizabeth Kingsland (Beginner Skill Level) This quilt works well with jelly roll and charm packs, or you can cut your own-either way this is a speedy quilt that is wonderfully fun to make. It’s easy to do and could be made in many color ways. Scraps of fabrics could be used for the centers of the blocks, with 2 1/2” strips surround-ing them. Setting the blocks on point makes for an up-graded finished look, while the actual sewing is very easy and quick. The possibilities are endless. V. Frolicking with Fibers and Fabrics

Jeanne Badgett (Beginner Skill Level) Increase your knowledge about fibers and fabrics to learn the how’s and why’s about selecting the right fabrics for your sewing projects. This fun, interactive class will cov-er basics such as fiber identification, thread count, and classifications of woven and knit fabrics. Learn the vari-ous properties of textiles that may impact the appearance or performance during use. Explore the steps involved to turn fibers into fabric into fashion. Comprehend the fun-damentals of color theory and how it can help you select fabrics with visually pleasing color combinations. AA. Confetti Art Quilt

Larry McKenney (Beginner Skill Level) Try your hand at a new technique in this class. Working from a photo, participants will use a rotary cutter to cut fabric into very small pieces and place them on to a background fabric. You can choose from a couple of different designs (fall trees, poppies/flowers). Once the image is complete, you will pin a piece of Tulle on top to hold the pieces together while quilting. Z. Design Your Own A-Line Skirt

Sandy Davis (Intermediate Skill Level) Be a designer! Make a personally fitted A-Line skirt by drafting a pattern from your own measurements. With such an easy project, you’ll want more skirts to build your wardrobe for summer cool-ness or to wear with leggings and boots in the winter. Instructor Biographies

Jeanne Badgett from Lexington, is a University of Kentucky Senior Extension Associate for Clothing, Textiles, and Household Equipment. She is the State Coordinator for the Kentucky Master Volunteer in Clothing Construction Program. She earned her BS & MS from University of Kentucky in the Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles Program, where she studied textile testing with an emphasis on apparel quality.

Marjorie Baker from Georgetown, is a retired University of Kentucky Extension Associate for Clothing and Textiles. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clothing and Textiles from Kansas State University. In her retirement, she continues to teach classes for local sewing and quilting shops and volunteers as a Scott County 4-H project leader for knitting and sewing.

Janice Beatty from Louisville is a Trained Sewing Instructor and a member of the Louisville ASG Chapter. She started sewing in 4-H, and continued by making her clothes, gifts, kid’s clothes, and home décor. She has won four Kentucky State Fair ribbons in Textiles. At her business, “The Sewing Kit”, she teaches sewing, does home décor and alterations.

Bob Coon from Fairfield, Ohio has been teaching for 30 years starting in Washington State. His resume includes seminars in Alaska, Road to California, Kansas State Quilter’s Guild, a Caribbean quilting cruise and teaching at numerous shops up and down the West coast. He specializes in “foundation piecing” and Sashiko quilting by machine.

Sandy Davis from Louisville, is a certified Palmer/Pletsch Beginning Sewing teacher, a licensed Martha Pullen Beginning Sewing, Serger Sewing and Heriloom Sewing teacher, a certified Sulky Sit & Sew teacher, a certified Islander Sewing Systems Instructor, and a Master Clothing Volunteer Emeritus, with over 25 years’ teaching experience.

Debbie Dison from Louisville, earned her certification as a Judy Niemeyer (Quiltworx) instructor. She has been sewing her whole life and teaches precision paper piecing

Elizabeth Kingsland from Lexington, is a retired Kentucky Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Agent for Education. She has always loved any kind of sewing. She taught quilting and sewing for 32 years at UK and continues to teach in retirement.

Jennifer Klee from Versailles, learned to sew in her youth while in 4-H. She has sewn for herself and family since then. She taught sewing to youth and adults during her career as a Kentucky Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Science s. Continues to teach sewing and quilting in retirement.

Lynnette LeGette from Louisville, has experience in various areas of sewing (clothing, décor, quilting). Her primary goal is to keep sewing fun, while learning techniques that expand new opportunities and provide keys to successful outcomes.

Kathy Lauer from California, Kentucky is a Certified Kentucky Master Volunteer in Clothing Construction since 1996. She enjoys sewing and machine embroidery.

Larry McKenney from Villa Hills, has been a fiber artist for over 50 years, working in batiking and art quilting. The last five years he has been creating art quilt wall hangings based on his travels and personal interests. He has taken classes with internationally recognized fiber artists and quilt designers. He has taught quilting classes throughout Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana for the past three years.

Instructor Biographies continued

Shelia Reinke from Omaha, Nebraska started sewing in 2nd grade. Through years of 4-H she found ways to be creative. She

taught her first quilting class in 1991 and sponsors 9 quilt retreats every year where she loves to see others get that “creative bug”.

Carol Sargent from Deputy, Indiana is a graduate of Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon. She has done a lot of sewing for others as well as making of all of her husband’s suits. After retiring she has enjoyed quilting and teaching quilting classes.

Candy Simms from Versailles, has been sewing since her childhood and is a Kentucky Certified Master Clothing Volunteer in Clothing Construction. She owns CLS Originals, a sewing and dressmaking business, and enjoys making quilts and teaching others to sew and make quilts “for fun.”

Angie York from Eddyville, is the Kentucky Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Education for Lyon County. She has been sewing since the early age of 8 years old and enjoys garment sewing, craft making, and especially quilting. The best part of her job with the University of Kentucky is teaching other people to love sewing as much as she does.
