RED CARPET CINEMA AND CAFÉ BARRED CARPET CINEMA & CAFÉ BAR is open to all-comers, and is as well known for casual dining as for showing the latest movies and live screenings of musical and theatrical events. Since reopening, in an enticing daytime promotion Red Carpet offers a cinema ticket for £12.95 per person to include brunch, lunch or antipasto platter. In the evening, a pre-show two-course meal costs £27.95. Changes made to keep you safe include a new entrance to the café bar and partitions between the tables. New exits have also been provided from each of the two cinema auditorium. To book: register on website Website www.redcarpetcinema.co.uk

FINGER OF SUSPICIONWord has reached Tiller Talk of great work by local police to nail two men who broke into Barton Marina. The trail led from a pool of blood at the security gate to A & E, where staff had treated a patient for lost digit. One less fingerprint to worry about.

BARTON MARINA CAFÉBARTON MARINA CAFÉ, affectionately known by regulars as “the caff”, has caught the marquee bug instead of the virus. Half the outdoor timber furniture is under canvas, the rest is also spread thinly either on the grass or on the impressive new timber terrace. All areas have stunning views across the marina beneath the branches of a weeping willow. Inside the café there is seating for 30 customers. Hand-painted canal art catches the eye if you’re in need of a gift.

Table service is friendly and attentive, and staff members are trained to comply with Covid-19 recommended procedures.

A Full English with fried eggs Sunak-side up is great value when breakfast greets the new day at 9am. The overall menu is simple and sensibly-priced, supplemented by mouth-watering, home-made lunchtime specials. Cakes, chocolates, preserves and scrumptious Callestick Farm Cornish ice cream make the “caff” a must-visit spot.

The Waterfront is the marina’s most spacious eatery with seating for 250 persons If it’s fresh air you’re looking for then this is the place to be. Apart from the covered garden terrace, the alfresco experience will be just that – but there’s plenty of room inside the pub to take shelter on a typical English summer’s day!

Customers are asked to book in advance for food, drinks or both, either by phone or online. Only the front entrance is in use, and after a cheery welcome and a request for contact details, you will be shown to one of the well-spaced tables where your order will be taken.

Opening at 10am daily, there isn’t much that this popular watering hole doesn’t offer. Breakfast is served until noon when the extensive menu comprising “good, honest pub food” and stone-based pizzas kicks in – all this with traditional roasts on a Sunday. One of the area’s most comprehensive drinks lists of ales, lagers, spirits and quality wines will help you to forget the past months of depressing news bulletins.

The Waterfront’s latest initiative is “naughty but nice”. Freshly-baked cakes, scones with clotted cream, Staffordshire oat cakes and tea cakes are on display with only one objective in mind – to tempt the unwary to extend that Lockdown waistline. So be warned!

WHAT THE MARINA SHOPS & RESTAURANTS ARE UP TO

Gallery 3 During the Lockdown, GALLERY 3 has been canvassing support for charity. Signed limited editions of “Thank You” by Doug Hyde have been promoted in aid of the NHS Charities Covid-19 Urgent Appeal.

Doug is the UK’s best-loved living artist, and his paintings highly collectible. “Thank You” is a message of love and gratitude to all the brave and inspirational carers who put themselves on the front line to keep us safe and save lives. The original sold for £35,000, and with £100 of every copy being donated, over £200,000 was raised for this deserving charity.

This award-winning gallery have put the recommended measures of hygiene and social distancing in place to enable clients to view in secure surroundings. Since reopening they have welcomed many old faces as well as some new ones to view the exciting display of original paintings, limited editions and sculptures.

Private viewings are another option, and take place by arrangement every day between 10am and 11am, and 4pm and 5pm. Call 01283 712900 to make a reservation.

LOCKDOWN LOWDOWN

OpenBUTCHER, BAKER & FARM SHOP was the only business to stay open throughout the lockdown. Well done to the owners and staff! There are many grateful local people who were saved from the hazards of a weekly shop in a crowded supermarket. Please continue to support this well-stocked store with its widespread products.

The Farm shop reports that it is back to its normal seven-day opening hours. Scoops of Needwood ice cream are being dispensed once again, and the coffee machine and oven has been moved to the ground floor with a takeaway service available. A comprehensive range of gifts can be found upstairs.

The butcher’s shop is justifiably proud of its Wagyu beef. The breed originates from Japan, but Yoxall farmer David Fearn has been cross-breeding with his grass-fed beef cows for years. Whilst not classed as pure Wagyu, the breed’s outstanding features are retained: highly-flavoured marbling and succulent texture. Prime cuts are hung for three weeks, and the sought-after meat is used in the shop’s home-made burgers, stir fries and other products.

START & TREMAYNE START & TREMAYNE, one of Burton’s oldest established companies, used the break to redecorate the shop, giving it “a subtle, fresh new look.” Not too subtle that it can’t be found, we hope.

One of the early visitors was BBC News, curious to know how business had been since reopening. The shop featured on national television with Laura Kuenssberg, and trading in the first week was described as “very pleasing”.

Eager to seek new opportunities post Covid-19, S & T have secured a tie-up with Swedish brand, Oriflame, Europe’s largest suppliers of beauty and wellness products. Catalogues and order forms can be picked up in the store and goods ordered online.

After a risk assessment had been carried out, measures were put in place in the store to reflect the changing times and ensure safe shopping for customers. Website: www.startandtremayne.co.uk

Artisan MarketOn the last Sunday of each month, from 10am until 4pm, craft persons and traders from all over the country descend on Barton Marina. Around 30 stalls display high quality products including fresh home-made food, hand-made jewellery and crafts, home furnishings and much more...It’s a great day out for everyone, but if the weather’s looking dodgy – strong winds can be a problem – then check that the event is still on via our social media channels before setting out. Parking is free, but bring enough cash with you to spend as there’s no hole in the wall and not all vendors accept cards. There are great walks around the lakes for exercising your dogs, but they must be kept under control at all times. Tiller Talk lists the on-site eateries, and when you’ve made your pick it’s advisable to book to avoid being disappointed. Remaining 2020 dates: 30th August / 27th September / 25th October / 29th November

Don’t miss the outdoor street food social! This fantastic family event is the perfect way to have a great time while still social distancing. You can feel secure as every measure will be in place to comply with COVID-19 guidelines. Picnic blanket areas are also available.

Phenomenal food stalls & live entertainment

SIGN OF THE TIMESBarton Marina regulars will have noticed new signage at every entrance – and many will have witnessed the appalling behaviour of some visitors during the Lockdown heatwave which led to the signs being erected. Steps

will be taken to ensure that future visitors comply with a code of conduct which allows the facilities to be enjoyed by the majority.
