In The NewsElizabeth L. Dirk, an assistant professor in the University of New Mexico Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been awarded a $400,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award. This funding will support research on heart valve tissue engineering, as well as the development of programs to encourage students to pursue biomedical engineering.
Melanie Moses, associate professor of computer science, works with a student on an iAnt, autonomous robots with iPhone brains that were built in her lab. They are used for simulations that test sensing, navigation, and communications behaviors in real-world environments.

About the Foundation
In1979,theBoardofRegentsoftheUniversityofNewMexicoestablishedtheUNMFoundationInc.asanonprofitcorporationinordertodevelopprivatefinancialsupportfortheinstitution.In1989,theBoardofRegentsdelegatedtheresponsibilityofoverseeingUniversityassetsandinvestmentstotheUNMFoundationInvestmentCommittee.
In2009-2010,attherequestoftheRegents,theFoundationtransitionedtoastand-aloneorganizationwithexpandedfiduciarydutiestoincludefiscal,humanresources,andtreasuryfunctions.Sinceitscreation,andinaccordancewithUniversitypolicy,allprivategiftsarereceivedthroughtheFoundation,whichhastheresponsibilityformanagingcontributionstoallUniversityprograms.

Qualifications
Abaccalaureatedegreefromanaccreditedinstitutionisrequired;amaster’sdegreeispreferred.Qualifiedcandidateswillhaveaminimumofsevenyearsofdevelopmentexperience,includingatleastfiveyearsinmajorgiftfund-raisingandinmanagement.Also,experienceinhighereducationorothernon-profitorganizationsisrequired.

In a collaborative effort, researchers at the University of New Mexico have broken new ground in Terahertz imaging through the development of a new metamaterial that allows manipulation of light in the Terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum and enables compressive sensing similar to what is possibly being undertaken in the human eye.

Establishedin1906,theUNMSchoolofEngineeringisthelargestengineeringschoolinthestateandhasmaintainedastrongtraditionasoneofthecountry’sleadingeducatorsofengineersandcomputerscientists.Withmorethan2,000undergraduatesandapproximately800graduatestudents,theSchooloffersaccreditedundergraduatedegreeprogramsandgraduateprogramsleadingtoMS,ME,andPhDdegreesinaresearch-intensiveenvironment.

The 2014 Team of theFormula Society of Automotive
Engineers (FSAE)
The program started at UNM in 1997. It has evolved into a three-semester program in which students design and build a race car. The culmination of the program is an opportunity to participate in an annual competition against the best schools in the world. The School placed 11th this year.
Golden Grads, 2014, celebrating the Class of 1964. Each May, the UNM Development Office invites 50-year Engineering graduates back to campus for a luncheon and program.
