FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE. Germany. - The progress and position of Assurance Companies in

Germany in the Year 1855. - By Wilhelm Lazarus, of Hamburg, Cor- responding Member of the Institute of Actuaries. (Translated and abridged by S. B., from Hubner's Jahrbuch für Volkswirthschaft und Statistik.) - Continued from p. 233.

After some remarks on the value of statistics applied to assurance in its various branches, and the wide field for research which may be opened up in Government documents or the records of Assurance Companies, Mr. Lazarus analyzes an important publication which has recently appeared on the subject of fire assurance. It is entitled, " On Fire Insurance Com- panies before the States General Assembly of the Kingdom of Saxony. By Martin Oberlander, Privy Councillor of the King of Saxony. Leipzig: J. J. Weber, 1857." The author appears to go into the question, not merely of the statistics of fires in Saxony, but as to the advantages of compulsory insurance by the Government. Mr. Lazarus controverts his opinions on some points, and discusses his arguments at some length ; but as the principal object of this paper is to preserve for reference the statis- tical tables, showing the present position of assurance in Germany, the reader will find in the following tables the facts relating to branches of assurance not touched upon in the preceding Number of the Journal.

Hemarks on Table /, page 290. The Stettin River Insurance Company have decided to increase, by the issue of new shares, their

capital to 300,000 Th. and their reserve to 50,000 Th. Respecting the Hamburg and Lübeck marine insurance business, we have detailed accounts.

For Hamburg the reports of the different Companies for the year 1854 enable a full statement to be compiled. The Hamburg Marine Insurance Companies publish a double statement : the first, with the large reserves for the current risks in the early part of the next following year ; and the second, a net account, after deduction of the risks, a year later. The net account for the year 1855 is not yet published.

We have no accounts for the Marine and Rhine Ship Insurance Company, the new Pomeranian Ship Insurance Association in Stettin, the Wurtemburg Transport Insurance Company in Heilbronn, the Prussian Marine Assurance Company at Stettin, the Berlin Land and Water Transport Insurance Company, and the u Fortuna " in Berlin.
