foreword

Today’s business environment experiences constant and rapid change. Globalization, financial crises, the development of digital business models and emerging markets are causing drastic uncertainty among well established organizations. Firms need to be efficient in their response, embracing technological change and undertaking strategic action such as mergers, acquisitions and alliances.

These challenges signify a growing demand for strategic skills: Multinational firms must refine their strategies, and continuously

change their day-to-day practices. Strategic Consultancy firms must constantly demonstrate the added

value they provide to their clients. Investment banks and corporate venture capital must shape new

alliances, mergers and acquisitions.

As a result, the market today requires the highest standard of technical training; the HEC MSc Strategic Management meets this demand. Taught entirely in English, the program lasts 10 months and is actively supported by top international consulting firms, leading companies and investment banks which actively take part in its curriculum through business cases and numerous real-life company projects.

Participants from all around the world will benefit from the program’s international exposure, the involvement of corporate partners and the reputation of HEC Paris as a leading business school in Europe.

We look forward to welcoming you on campus.

a comprehenSive curriculum

WHAT IS STRATEGIC MAnAGEMEnT?Strategic management is an essential component of company growth and survival and encompasses two main components: strategic analysis, i.e. identification of major trends and sources

of opportunities:‘external analysis’ consists of identifying the forces that constrain a firm –be it from the industry or from competition- and determining the paths of action in order to reach success; and ‘internal analysis’ refers to identifying performance leverages within a firm by assessing the available resources and determining paths of performance.

structure and organization, i.e. how a company is designed and manages projects. This includes central functions such as planning, management control and information systems. It also deals with employees’ commitment, corporate values and culture.

In short, Strategic management is the art of correctly positioning a firm in a turbulent environment in order to map out a path of unique and unmatchable excellence. It requires a great command of analytical frameworks and a rigorous mind.

OUR AMBITIOnOur HEC MSc Strategic Management aims to fulfill these objectives within a short period of time. This goal is met by building upon the specific knowledge and experience that our academic team brings to the program. They come both from HEC Paris’ outstanding faculty and from the best professionals working in top firms.

We offer two different tracks designed for students with either a business or non-business background: The business track is aimed at recent graduates with a degree

from a top institution in domains related to business administration, management, applied economics, or equivalent

The accelerated track is designed for students with no business related academic background, such as engineers, law, life science and medical studies.

students from both tracks are offered equal career opportunities at the end of the program.

However, some knowledge of French can be useful to enjoy the full HEC experience, become professionally bicultural and optimize networking with French students and alumni. This is why HEC Paris offers French language classes free of charge to its international students. Students may also register for a two week French language course (TEF certificate – all levels) in August. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn French before joining the Campus.

STUDy TRIPAt the beginning of April, students have the opportunity to go on a study trip with the purpose of gaining access to some exciting economic markets (e.g. Dubaï and the northern Emirates, Brazil, etc). Students take time to visit firms and to learn from the experience of lecturers locally involved as managers of leading firms. The study trip aims at both enriching the curriculum and enlarging the professional experience and networking of the students.

COnFEREnCESMany leaders from the industrial and service sector also participate actively in the program, sharing their experience in policy matters. This allows students to interact regularly with CEOs, Business Unit Managers and Directors of Strategy of large companies.

EnERGy & FInAnCE chaired by deloitte and société généraleInvestment decisions have become more and more complex with the discovery that most current forms of energy have a negative climatic impact. This reality requires corporations to deeply rethink their business models and governments to adopt visionary policies. The Energy & Finance Certificate is an exceptional opportunity for participants to confront the issues in this sector, and acquire the knowledge and analytical skills that will help them make informed decisions as important contributors to the current industrial revolution.

DIGITAL InnOvATIOn FOR BUSInESSchaired by free, priceminister and vente-privee.comThe Certificate provides HEC students with the opportunity to embrace e-business through an entrepreneurial approach. They will explore the various ways digital technologies enhance innovation through new business models, e-commerce, digital communication, collaborative marketing, funding of new ventures, etc.

DIGITAL TRAnSFORMATIOn chaired by axaAll large organizations deal with a major strategic issue: adapting and embracing the digital economy. The digital Transformation certificate aims at giving HEC students the tools to take advantage of this huge career opportunity, training them to become tomorrow’s consultants and managers of the Digital Economy. This certificate will immerse students in the various aspects of digital transformation through lectures, testimonials from top managers from diverse companies, and several projects developed thanks to a close relationship with large leading companies, as well as the collaboration of key consulting companies.

LUxURy chaired by Kering (gucci, yves saint laurent, alexander mcQueen, balenciaga, stella mccartney, sergio rossi, boucheron...)The Luxury Certificate is a business oriented program, seeking to provide future managers with an in-depth understanding of the unique rules for the effective management of luxury brands and companies. In the context of modern conceptual and managerial confusion regarding the luxury market, participants will revisit the essence of luxury, and, through rigorous analysis, will assess its managerial challenges. The Luxury certificate will challenge the participants’ marketing knowledge by setting out the often paradoxical rules for success, such as “break the rules of marketing to build luxury brands” (kapferer and Bastien 2009).

THE CAREER DEPARTMEnT AT yOUR SERvICELocated at the heart of the school, the career department strives to providing the best possible placement and business opportunities to all of our students. To do so, we have designed a 6-step career roadmap, which aims at helping our students explore their options, understand the job market and their personal priorities, and give them all the tools to achieve their goals. On top of that, we also provide our students with up-to-date job & internship opportunities, and organize many events throughout the year: company presentations, seminars, conferences, round tables, mock interviews with recruiters, career fairs…a few example of career events: Finance Career Fair (in October) Legal & Fiscal Career Fair (in October) Consulting Career Fair (in november) Alumni Career Fair (in January) General Career Fair: Carrefours HEC (in January)

Finally, we also connect our students with inspiring alumni, not only through a dedicated Alumni Fair in January, but also within the frame of a mentoring program.

THE HEC InCUBATORMany students develop exciting ideas for new businesses before, during and after their time at HEC Paris, but are sometimes deterred by the high risks that setting up a new firm might entail. The HEC Incubator helps participants manage these start-up risks so that they can pursue their ambitions with greater confidence. The Incubator program involves active mentoring from Faculty and Alumni, and is supported by a three-step pre-incubation phase. Throughout the ‘Introducing Entrepreneurship’, ‘Sandbox’ and ‘Springboard’ steps, participants can gather constructive feed-backs on their ideas before deciding whether to submit them for full Incubator selection.

that it gives us a lot of opportunity to interact with consultants from various firms as well as with top industry leaders. I particularly enjoyed the classes taught by companies because they provide insight into the real world strategic challenges that companies face these days and what practical solutions are recommended to them in such scenarios.
