Fort Bend CountyCommissionerGrady Prestagejoined MayorCharles Jessup andother ElectedOfficials fromMeadows Place andFort Bend County tocelebrate ourNationsindependence. Thisyear's ParadeMarshal was CraigHlavaty from“Between the Lines” on NewsFix Channel39 who also did a short piece on theparade, which is available to see on theirwebsite. Truly a small town parade, participantsincluded lots of red, white and blue, youthfloats and tons of bikes & kids. Therewas also a yard decorating contest forhomes along the route and surroundingneighborhood. The St. Thomas AlumniPipe Band & The Patriotic BrassEnsemble provided music, while JurassicExtreme Dinosaurs & Swatson from theSkeeters provided entertainment.

Floats from youth organizations such asMeadows Marlins Swim Team, MeadowsPlace PONY Baseball, Meadows PlaceBook Worm Club, Cub Scout Packs 301and 1115 also joined the parade. Nearbybusinesses and residents such asStafford Fire trucks, Meadows PlacePolice Department, Fort Bend CountyConstables & Fort Bend County

Fort Bend County I.T. has partnered withPublicStuff to create a mobile app tobetter interface with residents and allowindividuals to clearly and directlycommunicate specific problems within theCounty. Connect with Fort Bend provides anotheroption for residents to submit, track andview nearby non-emergency servicerequests through their smartphones andonline. By simply snapping a picture,damaged or downed street signs,potholes, drainage problems and similarissues can be reported and routed to theappropriate department. Once requestsare submitted, the relevant staff redirectsand responds to requests through acustomized workflow managementsystem. Residents can also use the in-app widgets to find information aboutevents, public facilities and pollinglocations, as well as receive alerts ofemergencies and County activities. In a time when most people live in theworld of apps, citizens will be able toquickly reach out to County staff about aparticular problem or issue they mighthave. Connect with Fort Bend willtransform the relationship with residentsthrough technology.

Ambulances entered aswell. Approximately 40 Jeeps from theTx4WD Sugar Land Jeep club joined theparade and also had a Jeep stackingdemonstration at the end of the parade inthe park. Sugar Grove Church of Christwas on hand to pass out water & freezepops at the end of the parade.

Anyone who is considering starting a newbusiness is encouraged to attend ahands-on workshop on how to create abusiness plan at Fort BendCounty Sienna Branch Library onSaturday, August 6th, from 10:30am to12:30pm, in the Meeting Room of thelibrary, located at 8411 Sienna SpringsBlvd. in Missouri City.

Having such a plan is an important assetwhen seeking funding for a newbusiness. This EzyBizPlan trainingworkshop will explain the 12 criticalelements of every business plan,beginning with creating a customizedmodel, assessing the competitive qualityof that model, and converting worksheetdata into a professional business planthat financial lenders will appreciate. Theworkshop includes workbooks andhands-on assistance for creating a realand relevant outline that can be used tolaunch a business. The workshop is presented by SCOREmentor Mathew Fitzgerald, who beganhis career as a CPA with Ernst & Youngbefore moving into executive-financeroles with Baker Hughes, BJ ServicesCo., Veritas DGC, and Grant Prideco Inc.

Women’s Voice for Better America, anetwork of diverse women, is proud toinvite women from all walks of life toattend the Opportunity Fair on Saturday,August 27th, 2016 from 1:00pm to 4:00pmat Star Learning, 3528 Texas 6, SugarLand, TX 77478.

Women’s Voice for BetterAmerica has designed theOpportunity Fair to increasewomen’s access to qualityhealthcare, job pursuits, small businessstart-up assistance, wealth management,civic participation and voting. TheOpportunity Fair is a free event providing

This Program is presented in partnershipwith SCORE, the non-profit mentoringarm of the U.S. Small BusinessAdministration. Missouri City ExpandsVolunteer Program

Now in its second full year, the MissouriCity Municipal Volunteer Program (MVP)has grown exponentially. In the first fivemonths of 2016, more than 60 volunteerswere added to the program’s roster, andmore than 2,000 volunteer hours wererecorded. Missouri City’s staff values themany citizen partnerships that haveallowed MVP to grow and contribute tomunicipal operations. MVP exists notonly as a way for residents to volunteerwith city staff in existing programs butalso as a way to facilitate new initiativesand implement creative resident ideas. Successes are evident throughout theinitiative. In the Animal Shelter, theprogram has grown to the point where atleast one volunteer is able to assist citystaff on a daily basis to help socialize

services for women through a variety ofresources.

MD Anderson will provide sessions thathighlight cancer prevention diets, nutrition,health related activities and information.Memorial Hermann-Southwest willhighlight women’s access to healthcareand Ibn Sina Community Medical Centerwill provide Well-Women exams. Inaddition, Golden Years will introducepersonal service assistance programs andmedical provider information for women. For women seeking jobs, WorkforceSolutions will be available to offersessions on job applications, resumewriting, cover letters, interview techniquesand making network connections. SCOREHouston will provide information andconsultation for women seeking help tostart up small businesses. New York LifeInsurance and Wealth DevelopmentStrategies will also be on hand to providestrategies for investment and financialmanagement. To ensure women’s progress in voting andcivic participation, The League of WomenVoters will conduct voter registration.They will also provide valuable insightabout the benefits of voting as well as theprocesses that open doors to citizenship. Star Learning, located near 99 RanchMarket on TX Hwy 6 between WilliamsTrace Blvd and Settlers Way in SugarLand, has graciously offered theirvenue. The event will have free parking,raffles and refreshments.

Held the secondThursday of the month at 11:30a.m. in the City Centre at QuailValley, 2880 La Quinta Dr.,luncheons are occasionally held off-site.

Comprehensive Plan Survey:Resident input is needed for theMissouri City Comprehensive PlanUpdate. Available atShowMeCity.com, the survey willassist City staff and ComprehensivePlan Advisory Committee (CPAC)members as they update the plan,which is updated every five yearsand is a roadmap for futuredevelopment and success for thecity.

Finance Department: A volunteer isneeded to assist the city’s FinanceDepartment at City Hall with clericalwork such as data input, filing andother office-type duties. Staffmembers are especially looking fora volunteer who already hasexperience working in an officeenvironment.

Parks and Recreation: Throughoutthe year, Parks and Recreationhosts multiple large-scale eventsfor the public as well as weekly andmonthly programs. Volunteers areneeded on an ongoing and as-

AccessHealth prepares forAnnual Back-to-School Health

Fairs In Fort Bend County

AccessHealth has partnered with Precinct2 Commissioner Grady Prestage, FortBend County, the City of Missouri City,Houston Methodist Sugar Land andCommunity Health Choice to bring twoFREE, fun-filled, healthy events to the

needed basis for the manyprograms offered by thedepartment.

Public Safety: The Missouri CityPolice Department Volunteer InPolice (VIP) program is stillaccepting new applicants.Volunteer opportunities include arange of administrative and publicsafety duties. Additionalbackground checks will be required.

Animal Shelter: Volunteers 18 orolder are needed to assist AnimalShelter staff with daily and monthlychores and events. Volunteeropportunities range from socializingshelter cats and dogs, cleaningshelter cages, assisting withadoption events and coordinatingadoptions with outside agencies.

Stafford MSD Starts New Tradition!

Stafford MSD Proud Month is a monthwhere we recognize and celebrate thenumerous accomplishments of ourschool district. You are cordially invited toa free event, SMSD Proud MonthCelebration from 4 - 8pm. August 18th, atStafford High.

This year’s health fairs will be held at 400Austin Street, Richmond, Texas on August6th, 2016 and at the Fort Bend CountyMissouri City Annex at 307 TexasParkway, Missouri City, Texas on August13th, 2016. Both fairs will be held from9:00am until noon.

The two fairs will be open to the publicand offer FREE immunizations, dentalscreenings, vision screenings, speech-language screenings, backpacks, schoolsupplies, free haircuts (Missouri City only)and over 20 information booths.

Parents will need to bring theirchildren’s immunization records andcome prepared for activities and snacks. Backpacks will be issued only to childrenpresent the day of the fair. AccessHealth is a private, not-for-profitcommunity health center that serves FortBend County and the surrounding areas,dedicated to providing integrated healthcare services to improve the quality of lifein the communities it serves withoutregard to income or circumstance.AccessHealth is a United Way Agency.
