Experienced and competent paddlers will be allowed to take out a club OC1 by themselves, provided they have the approval of the OC safety committee (consisting of the OC coordinator, club safety officer, other experienced OC1 members/coaches). Please contact the OC coordinator for approval. Novice and lesser experienced paddlers will be allowed to paddle in a group of 2, as long as their partner is an experienced OC1 paddler. For your safety FLCC always recommends, you never paddle alone. All must be FLCC members and have completed the club OC1 huli clinic within the last 14 months proving to be competent in OC1 assembly and huli self-recovery. Seconded by Bob Carried

Dragonboat Report August 2016

Submitted by Joyce May The green 6-16 has sustained serious damage by being run onto the rocks, west of the bridge, at race pace. The boat is being repaired and should be serviceable in a few days. The steers assessment process continues and we are close to seeing all of the primary or regular steers for teams having successfully been assessed or having assessments scheduled. The dragonboat division is putting forth two policies around steering:

1. ThatteamsensuretheirprimaryorregularsteerspersonhassuccessfullyundergonetheFLCCassessmentprocess(onlineknowledgeassessmentandon-waterskillsassessment)

2. Tomentornewortraineesteers,asteerspersonmustbeanassessed,level3steer. Navigation regulations require ‘lights’ after sunset and before sunrise. The lights for Human-Powered Boats can be: Option 1 -An electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light (a watertight flashlight is acceptable) ready to use far enough in advance to prevent a collision. Option 2 - Same lights as listed for sail boats, according to length. In our case it would be sidelights; and sternlight. Teams will need to comply with the lighting regulation in September. The ‘first time free’ drop-in is going well and has resulted in an increase in those enquiring coming to try out dragonboating. Moonlight paddles have been re-introduced to the dragonboat division. Two boats have paddled in July and August. The final moonlight paddle for the season is September 16 at 6:45. There has been an increase in interest in winter paddling. Saturday and Sunday morning will be busy. We are looking for a place to store and work on boats during the offseason. Thanks to John Spencer for working to stay on top of DB maintenance issues.

OC Report Presented by Gralin Doubleday

Aug 29, 2016 Our annual huli drill push is in full force now with about half our usual amount of members having completed. Many thanks to those members who are helping to supervise the groups & teams in completing their drills. For those yet to still complete the huli drill, please contact me directly to set up a time. There will be open dates coming up for anyone that was not able to complete with their crews or that are not currently on a team, watch for dates and times. I met with our safety officer Bob Anderson to review the huli quiz and huli procedures in general. It was decided that we would not change the huli quiz at this time based on our current published review material, but that there is room for improvements to both the quiz and the live procedures. More meetings will be taking place to discuss all safety aspects within the OC discipline. One area that Bob & I agreed on is a review of the current OC1 policy governing the use of club OC1s. We will be looking at ways of relaxing some of the usage rules allowing the more competent and experienced members solo access for training, and allowing lesser experienced paddlers to go out with one experienced partner rather than the required two. We also discussed the possibility of acquiring more small boats. The current status of our three OC1s is as follows, one is under repair and not currently in use, one is in use but apparently still taking on some water (I will look at this one again this week), and one seems to be working well and in full service. I will be drafting a rewrite of the OC1 usage rules shortly for the board to review. As always, information on any CORA items, your annual membership renewal and race schedule & results can be found by visiting https://www.canadianoutrigger.com

Sprint Report August 2016

Submitted by G Rawstron

Summer camps have continued to be well attended and should be financially successful this year. This is a busy month for Regattas and with good FL attendance at each of them. Presently we have 6 athletes that are back in Halifax for the Nationals. This is the biggest Club team for many years and represents a big commitment on the part of the Athlete families. It has been a very successful summer with our new coach(Emily) and our summer coordinator (Zaffia) who has expressed interest in returning to our club for the next summer. We have not done final totals yet or compared finances with previous years – that usually takes a couple of months but initial results are favourable. The Junior and masters paddlers are preparing for the Pacific Cup in two weeks –the major regatta ( international ) for the northwest and our best measure of the progress we are making as a sprint group

Voyager Report August 29 2016

Submitted by Debbie Scott We have had a few more drop in paddlers join the club! One more steer person has been trained and is ok to steer on her own but only with a 2nd boat for now. On June 18 we paddled to Kanaka Creek and had a potluck lunch. It was a very rainy day but we still had lots of fun and great food. The drop in paddle sign up on the FLCC website has been working very well. I'm trying to find someone to volunteer for the Fort Langley Cranberry Days. The request will be on the FLCC website drop in sign up.
