    Looking Forward

    GivingBack

2016 was a great year for The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country! We gave much needed funds to area nonprofit organizations, making the Hill Country an even better place “to work, worship, volun-teer, learn, play and thrive!” (many thanks to fellow Trustee, Dr. Alice V. White, for allow-ing me to copy her phrase).

We stayed true to our mission of “inspiring philanthropy by helping our partners achieve their charitable goals”. That focus allowed growth in many areas, including funds, grant distributions and assets, as noted later in this Annual Report. In the past 5 years, our community doubled the assets of the Foun-dation with sound decision-making by our Trustees and excellent leadership by Paul Urban. We are in a very strong position to move forward in service to the community.

We know and believe that looking forward is the key to giving back. Helping even more individuals, families and businesses to part-ner with TCF will better our community for all residents. Our “Philanthropy” event was one key part of furthering partnerships and giving, as was opening an office in Freder-icksburg to better serve the growing asset base in Gillespie County.

Hosting Summit for the 16th year provided networking and education for the nonprofit organizations with which we partner. Grant-making to organizations like the Hill Coun-try Youth Orchestras, The Good Samaritan Center and the Dietert Center enriched lives both young and old and empowered collaboration efforts previously untapped. Awarding scholarships to hard-working high school seniors offered more education op-portunities to numerous students all across the Hill Country.

The Community Foundation is here to help donors make the most of their giving dollars in concert with helping nonprofit organiza-tions build sustainability and with helping students access higher education. This is what we do, and it’s why we exist. How can we help you achieve your charitable goals as you work, worship, volunteer, learn, play and thrive?

    Sincerely,

Dr. John Hutcherson, TCF Board President

“Ladies and gentlemen, please return to your seats. The captain has turned on the seat belt sign, and we will land shortly.” Another Summit has arrived and departed and The Community Founda-tion is thankful, yet again, for the partnership of the Hal & Charlie Peterson Foundation to bring quality education to the Hill Country! Our theme for Summit 2016 was “The 30,000-Foot View”, and this idea permeated all aspects of the publicity, marketing materials and signage for the event. Special thanks to TCF Trustee, Dave Weekley, for allowing us to use a video of his own “30,000-foot view” when he jumped from a plane a few months earlier! His video generated LOTS of social media attention for Summit.

October 4th marked our 16th year of Summit and highlights of the day included:

Over 55 attenders who networked with area professionals• 42 area Nonprofit Agencies represented by ED’s, Staff,• Trustees & Volunteers8 engaging, reputable guest speakers who fostered an• atmosphere of higher learning4 Panelists who offered insights into best practices for• NPO’s1 fantastic venue, The Hill Country University Center, who • welcomed our staff and attenders

Guest speakers covered the following topics: Storytelling that Moves People, Tuning up for a First-Class Landing (Board Effec-tiveness), Putting the Safe in Social (Media), Hiring Harmony (Best Match for your NPO), What Do Donors Really Want?, Dealing with Legal Issues, Video Ideas and Strategies, and Creating a Personal Flight Plan. With such a learned runway of speakers, it was no surprise that evaluations by participants indicated a strong, posi-tive outcome. Frequent fliers (long-time attenders) are planning to return next year, and first-timers are planning to come back, too!

The Community Foundation presented “Philanthropy” to guests in both Fredericksburg and Kerrville. The Community Foundation knows that individuals cannot impact our community in as big a way as with partnerships. Partnering with local businesses and citizens is what drives positive outcomes and makes better our Texas Hill Country. Featured speaker Dan T. Garrett focused on that very point as he expounded on the idea of legacy planning and multi-generational giving. Over 300 attenders were remind-ed of how important it is to make a legacy plan; The Community Foundation is passionate about helping individuals, families and businesses achieve their goals through legacy planning. Are you interested in beginning or updating your legacy plan? Our staff is knowledgeable about the numerous options and vehicles available to you. Give us a call to explore the possibilities for you!

  • An Ear ForEducation

Plato understood it best when he said, “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” The Community Foundation values education by granting funds to nu-merous organizations in our Texas Hill Country like the Hill Country Youth Orchestras (HCYO). The mission of HCYO is to bring the joy of the orchestra experience to the youth of the Texas Hill Coun-try regardless of race, color, creed, disability, or economic status. With 150 youth annually who participate in the programs HCYO of-fers, sustainability only happens through grants and generous do-nors. Music education not only enhances cognitive development, it also builds social skills and character. The Community Founda-tion enjoys a partnership with HCYO that positively impacts youth today and tomorrow, but reaches further to impact our community as a whole. Around the Hill Country, 62% of the students attend from Kerrville, 20% from Fredericksburg and 18% from other Hill Country area communities. The positivity that emerges from this partnership is that today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and the attributes associated with our young musicians forecast a bright future. Recently, HCYO opened a fund with The Community Foun-dation. “HCYO just celebrated its 30th anniversary and in order to be able to continue to serve the youth of the Texas Hill Country for another 30 years, we had to ensure the strength of our financial foundation for years to come. We believe that TCF provides the means by which to do so,” stated Matt Evans, HCYO Executive Director. For more information about HCYO visit their website at www.hcyo.org.

    Change Agents for Good

Losing a spouse is a devastating experience. It changes every aspect of life for the person left behind. Not only do they mourn their loved-one, but also the life they shared as a couple. The grief journey is challenging and painful but must be survived.

The Dietert Center provides assistance along this difficult jour-ney, as a result of a generous bequest from the Sue J. Birdsong estate, through a fund administered by The Community Founda-tion. The Center offers grief support groups and has established a lending library of specially selected books for widows and wid-owers about the grief process, with plans to expand the offerings over time.

This bequest has also made possible a new collaboration be-tween the Dietert Center and the New Hope Counseling Center.

“I heard a presentation by Brenda Fudge, Executive Director of New Hope Counseling, at our Morning Rotary Club,” commented Waverly Jones, Dietert’s Club Ed Director. “When I learned they were also the beneficiaries of the Birdsong Fund, I approached Brenda and suggested we collaborate on a series of workshops for widows at the Dietert Center. It’s turned out to be a great part-nership!”

The first workshop series was held on April 26 and May 3 at the Dietert Center, with counselors from New Hope as the instructors. A total of 26 widows and widowers attended the sessions, and more are planned for the future.

“We know there is a great need to support widows and widow-ers as they try to adjust to a ‘new normal’ without their spouses,” added Jones. “We see people struggling through this process all the time at the Dietert Center. That’s why we’re so grateful to have been able to develop a new partnership to help them navigate this painful journey.”

The Community Foundation applauds collaboration among non-profits! Find more information about the Dietert Center at www.dietertcenter.org. How is your nonprofit collaborating with others? We want to hear about it! Does your organization provide services for widows and/or orphans? Let us know as we make decisions annually about the Birdsong grant distributions.

How Can IGive? For the many giving options available, please contact our Foundation staff. You may know precisely which organiza-tions you want to support, or you may not. In either case, we can help you shape a legacy plan that fits your needs and carries out your charitable intent. We would be happy to visit with you about how flex-ible and effective your chari-table giving can be. Your gift will help address the needs of today and the challenges of tomorrow.

2016 marked an expansive year for The Community Foundation. With an ever-increasing asset base in Gillespie county, the Staff and Board of Trustees agreed that it was time to open an office in Fredericksburg. On a cold and blustery morning in early December, donors, supporters, trustees and staff gathered to officially open the location with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and open house. Received with open arms by the Fredericksburg community, we are thrilled to be able to have a larger presence in Gillespie county. We are out and about constantly meeting new donors and engaging with nonprofits, so give us a call before you stop by, we don’t want to miss seeing you! You’ll find us in the small house adjacent to the Memorial Presbyterian Church at 607 N. Milam Street.
