    THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Last year on this feast day, I wrote a rather long and, perhaps somewhat dry, theological history of the development of the Sacrament of Baptism. It’s now been a year since the Rite of Baptism for Children was revised, based on the strict translation principles created by John Paul II over two decades ago; it takes a while for church people to get around to doing these things! So I thought it would be a good time to look at the sacra-ment through another lens.

This anniversary of the new translation brought to mind one part of the Rite of Baptism that is probably overlooked by most Catholics: the anointing with chrism. We’re all familiar with the Trinitarian formula that goes with the pouring of water, and that is, indeed, the central act of the Sacrament. But the anointing after Baptism includes some powerful words that spell out exactly how we are to live our baptismal calling. As the priest (or deacon) makes the Sign of the Cross on the crown of the child’s head, he says:

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, has freed you from sin and given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and joined you to his people. He now anoints you with the Chrism of salvation, so that you may remain as a member of Christ, Priest, Prophet and King, unto eternal life.

Priest, prophet and king: those are the three roles our baptism charges us to fulfill as believers. But what do they really mean? Every Catholic isn’t an ordained priest, certainly not a king (or queen), and our understand-ing of what it means to be a prophet wouldn’t fit into most lives. This is what those three terms really mean. To be a priest is to be, first of all, a person of prayer. An ordained priest fulfills that role primarily by presid-ing at the Eucharist; but every baptized Catholic is to be a person who values the grace and strength that prayer provides, both personally and communally. The role of prophet in the Old Testament (or the New) was-n’t to foretell the future but rather to speak the truth regardless of the cost. That prophetic truth-telling is what brought both Jesus and John the Baptist to their deaths! Every baptized Catholic is charged to speak God’s truth in a world that, all too often, prefers its own version of the truth.

Finally, when we think of kings, we picture people sitting on thrones and being waited on hand and foot by obedient servants. But the primary job of Old Testament kings was to serve the needs of their people, not to be served. The kings who failed to do that came to a bad end, either by God’s hand, the hands of their enemies or those of their own people. As baptized Catholics, we are to put ourselves at the service of the Church and the service of others. Even the pope is known as “the servant of the servants of God.” And note that this anointing takes place on the crown of the head. Get it? So, as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, it’s a good time to refresh our awareness of all that this Sacrament should mean for each of us. 1

WHY DO WE HOLD HANDS DURING THE

    OUR FATHER?

The practice of members of the assembly hold-

ing hands while praying the Lord’s Prayer dur-

ing the Mass is a custom that developed or-

ganically in the 1970s and 1980s. While some commentators ac-

knowledge that the practice varies from place to place, it is a fairly

universal reality in parishes across the United States. For some, this

action symbolizes the communion of Christians praying together as

one family of believers honoring the Father of All. Critics of the prac-

tice sometimes express concern that holding hands can be a distrac-

tion from the more significant unity that is experienced when we proc-

ess to the altar to receive sacramental communion.

And so, we’re left to ask, what is the answer?

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (the document that of-

fers specific instructions for the celebration of the Mass) is silent on

the practice, saying only that ―all the faithful say the prayer‖ with the

priest. The website of the US Bishops simply observes that ―No posi-

tion is prescribed in the Roman Missal for an assembly gesture dur-

ing the Lord’s Prayer.‖ And so, we’re left to discern within ourselves

and within our parish and religious communities what is an authentic

gesture of praise during this important point of the Mass. For some,

this means continuing to hold hands, while for others, this may mean

adopting another posture of prayer. ©LPi

    ARE THERE HMOS IN HEAVEN?

A doctor, a nurse, and the top ex-

ecutive of an HMO died and were in

line together at the pearly gates. St.

Peter asked each one what good

they had done in their lives.

The doctor said, ―I have devoted my

life to the sick and needy and have

had a part in caring for and healing

    thousands of people.‖

St. Peter replied, ―That’s great. Go

    ahead into heaven.‖

The nurse chimed in, ―I have sup-

ported the doctor and his patients

my entire life as an adult, have

taken time to explain things to pa-

tients, and have helped them lead

    healthy lives.‖

    ―Wonderful,‖ says St. Peter. ―Please

    proceed in with the doctor.‖

Then the executive said, ―I was the

president of a very large health

    maintenance organization. I was re-

sponsible for the healthcare of mil-

lions of people all over the country.‖

St. Peter says, ―Oh, I see. Please go

on in ... but you can only stay two

    nights!‖ ©LPi

Mass Registration Mass Registration Mass Registration

As more people return to weekend Mass and as the weather gets

colder, it will become more important to sign up, either online or

by calling the rectory by noon on Fridays. Those who come to

Mass without signing up can create a long line behind them as

their name and phone number are written down by the greeter,

causing their fellow parishioners to stand out in the cold, or even

in the rain—and eventually, the snow. And if we begin to reach

our current maximum capacity of 135 at each weekend Mass,

those who have not signed up might be asked to leave, which

would be unfortunate but necessary. You’ll be informed if any of

these requirements change in the future.

    Gospel Meditation

    EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP -

    RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY

    MOMENTS

    WHEN GOD WHISPERS

―You don’t need to shout. My hear-

    ing works just fine.‖

Are you a parent that has used

that one on your kids? I’m not

sure at what age they realize that

the volume of their voice doesn’t

correlate to the likelihood of re-

ceiving a favorable reply — it might

be sometime in the teenage years,

when the talking slows down alto-

    gether.

But I’ve got to admit, it would be

nice if God always gave us a loud

    and dramatic sign when He

    wanted something — the booming

    voice and the torn-open heavens

(―This is my beloved Son!‖) really

    get the message across. Some-

times I find myself envious of the

Apostles, who were able to wit-

    ness such things in person.

The fact of the matter is, in the

year 2021, God is more likely to

speak in a whisper than in a

    shout. The prophet Isaiah fore-

warns that Christ himself will not

be a noisemaker — for all his

preaching, he will not cry out or

shout to bring forth justice to the

nations. His way is altogether dif-

    ferent than that.

We are not the Apostles, and we

do not have the privilege of seeing

the Holy Spirit descend on Christ

like a dove. But here’s the good

news: God doesn’t need to shout.

    Our spiritual hearing works just

fine. We just have to be listening.

Let’s wake up each morning ready

    to hear God’s whispers throughout

the day. Let’s make a conscious

effort to invite those whispers into

our hearts, where they can be-

come a catalyst for grace in this

    world.

    The Baptism of the Lord

We need history. We need it in

    order to understand ourselves,

    personally and collectively. The

pieces of our histories may not

    have always been the most

    positive, honest, exemplary,

    dignified, proud and best mo-

ments of our lives, but they are ours. We have to acknowledge, remem-

ber, accept, and often heal them. We cannot forget them or pretend that

they never existed. As horrible as the atrocities of events like Auschwitz,

brutal injustices committed throughout the human journey, or personal

painful experiences in our own stories, we need to remember. These

times when humanity in general or people in particular have lost their

way are times that need to be reconciled and redeemed.

If we lose the memories, we will make the same mistakes again. The hu-

man soul needs a strong sense of affirmation, direction, and clear pur-

pose. Without these essentials, we will easily run amuck and repeat the

sins of our past. God’s voice throughout history has spoken precisely

about this! We are reminded through the voices and example of many

prophets and witnesses not to make the same mistakes again, come

back to center, discover the purpose given to us by God, maintain a

sense of proper direction, seek healing for wounds and be reconciled to

    our Creator.

Baptism is so incredibly important for the salvation of humankind, not

only eternally but here and now. Our existence depends upon it. It gives

us the affirmation we need from God by gifting us with the same inti-

mate relationship Jesus had with the Father. We are blessed with the

direction and clear purpose we need in order to be productive stewards

and faithful Christians. Baptism calls us to remember, accept, and deal

with the sins and inequities of our past regardless of how hurtful and

serious. We consciously choose to turn away from them and put on the

new life of Christ. To do this well, we must look hard and long at our sins

and failings, listen to what they are saying and learn from them. If we

ignore the past, collectively or personally, or pretend that it never hap-

pened, we will never grow. We will surely die.

People need to hear the message, lived and spoken, delivered by the

baptized members of the Body of Christ. It is an essential message of

hope that is layered with visions of justice, peace, reconciliation, re-

demption, blessing, and healing. It is a message that helps us remember

what has gone before, the graces and the sins, and bring ourselves by

God’s help where we need to be. We are called to do much more than sit

home behind our closed doors. We have a message to deliver. Are we

    ready to do so? ©LPi

    Gospel Reading

    Mark 1:7-11

Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist.

    Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In most years, this feast is celebrated on the Sunday

after Epiphany. When Epiphany falls on either January 7 or 8, the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the

    Monday after Epiphany.

In today's Gospel we hear John the Baptist contrast his baptism of repentance with the baptism that Jesus

will inaugurate. John the Baptist says that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will

baptize with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism; it was a preparation for the

Christian Baptism we celebrate today, and through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is

received. In accepting John's baptism, Jesus, though sinless, united himself with all sinners.

The baptism of Jesus is reported in each of the three Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Clearly,

Jesus' baptism was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community. Mark and

Luke report the story from Jesus' perspective; the voice from heaven is addressed to Jesus. In Matthew's

Gospel, the voice from heaven speaks to all who are present. The descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his

baptism shows that something new is beginning through the baptism and ministry of Jesus.

The baptism of Jesus is considered an important manifestation of God in the person of Jesus, another epiph-

any. Jesus' baptism inaugurates his mission. Mark's Gospel moves quickly from the report of Jesus' baptism

to Jesus' temptations in the desert to his ministry in Galilee after John's arrest. The end of the ministry of

John the Baptist is the beginning of Jesus' ministry. In an analogous way, our Baptism inaugurates our mis-

    sion as Christians.

Surprisingly, on this the last day of the Christmas season the Gospel does not tell a story from Jesus' child-

hood. Instead the Gospel reveals Jesus' relationship to God: the Son of Mary and Joseph is also God's own

Son. We believe that through Baptism we are also made children of God.

    Growing with the Gospel

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: ―One mightier than I is

coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of

his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with

the Holy Spirit.‖ It happened in those days that Jesus came from

Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On com-

ing up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the

Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the

heavens, ―You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.‖
