What’s Up Grade 3s?

The Grade 3s have been busy as bees and It’s often a hive of activity in our little portables. Here is what we have

been up to.

1. MATHS: Story sums.

We learnt about spotting keywords that tell us to add, subtract, multiply or divide to find the answers

2. WRITING: Narratives

Using adjectives and other interesting words make an octopus, slimy, mysterious and sinister. We are great storytell-

ers!

3. READING: Comprehension. It is in the text!

We reread and use keywords (again!) to search for answers because some questions can be quite tricky! We are

getting better at this!

4. INQUIRY: World Compliment Day on 1st March

We learnt that putting a smile on someone’s face does not cost a cent but meant the world to someone else.

5. SPORTS: Basketball, Soccer, Tee-Ball, Dodgeball

Fridays are our Grade 3 Sports where we compete between the different Grade 3 classes in different ball games.

We love it!

Stay tuned for more!

Our cultural diversity

Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.

Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.

Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Why orange?

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

What is Harmony Week?

The 15th- 21st March is Harmony Week.

It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our

community.

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and

work to maintain it.

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or

linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Celebrating diversity in Visual Arts at Wallarano

Primary School

At Wallarano we are lucky to have a very diverse community and our students are immersed in a culture of

inclusiveness, respect and belonging every day. Throughout the year students at Wallarano explore and celebrate

the culture and art of the different community groups in Australia and around the world during their Visual Arts

lessons.

If you have a student in the following year levels take this week as an opportunity to ask them what they have

been learning about other artists and cultures during their art lessons this term.

Foundation students have been practicing how to greet the teacher in Italian, say some colours and

creating their artwork about some famous things from Italy.

Grade 2 students have been learning about the importance of symbols in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and that the hand is an important symbol of belonging for First Nations people.

Grade 3 students have been creating paper sculptures of oxen and dragons to celebrate the Lunar New

Year this term.

Grade 4 students have also been celebrating Tet by

learning about woodblock printing from Đông Hồ village

and creating an artwork based on their Vietnamese zodiac

animal.

Grade 6 students have been inspired by Ukiyo -e artist Hokusai who created his woodblock prints about the beautiful landscape around Mount Fuji and have experimented with Japanese printing and sumi painting techniques.

Happy Harmony Week! Kalya Gower—Visual Arts Teacher
