Meetings - Third Tuesday of the Month at the Bracebridge Rotary Centre

President’s Message

Let’s give a very hearty thank you to our Past President, Anne Noonan,

and her team for organizing a fabulous 10th Anniversary Celebration. It

took a lot of hard work and all the efforts of her team were appreciated.

newsletter Bob you’ll know we enjoyed having you and hearing all about

the history of Probus.

It’s that time of year when we’re looking for members to sit on the

Executive to get more information. If you’re interested in possibly

volunteering, then come to the Rotary at 9:30 am, on the second Tuesday

of the month for a Management meeting, and sit in as a member at large

Meanwhile I look forward to getting back in the saddle and seeing you

next week.

Kalamazoo – A Comedy by Michelle Kholos Brooks & Kelly Younger

On the afternoon of Thursday, September 12, join us at 2:30 PM at the Gravenhurst Opera House for

Kalamazoo, a romantic comedy about life’s second act, and learning you’re never too old to be young.

When widow Peg, a 70-something, Irish Catholic bird lover with five daughters, and widower Irving, a

quirky 70-something Jewish, metal detector-toting East Coaster, bravely venture into the world of an

online senior dating site, it feels like love at first click. But after their crazy margarita-filled first date,

complete with body shots and morning-after tattoos, these endearing baby boomers find that they still

have a little growing up to do if they want to forget their past and move forward into a future together.

When these opposites attract, Peg and Irving discover love isn’t any easier the second time around, as

they try to navigate their expectations, quirks, prejudices, needs, wants and personalities, as well as their

children’s opinions about them.

Tapestry: The Carole King Songbook

For one night only, on Saturday, September 28 at 8 PM at the Gravenhurst Opera House, don’t miss this tribute to Carole King. The Tapestry show recreates the sound and vibe of a 1970's Carole King concert following her legendary album, Tapestry. This show not only performs songs from the record-breaking, Grammy winning album of the same name, but also Carole's follow-up hits that continued throughout the 70's, as well as many songs that Carole King and her husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote in the 1960’s. They proved to be one of the most successful song writing teams in pop music history, composing more than 400 songs recorded by over 1,000 artists, including: The Drifters, The Beatles, Donnie Osmond, Aretha Franklin, and the list goes on. Impeccable attention to detail is taken in recreating a respectful, and accurate full musical presentation with full band, completely live. Tapestry brings back a beautiful flood of music memories with every song an unforgettable hit for audiences to experience. Suzanne O. Davis' performance takes you on a journey back to those great recordings with stories about the music, history of Carole King’s incredible career, and a fun, sing-a-long, audience interactive performance.

As well, don't forget about the wonderful outdoor performances throughout Muskoka every week, such as every Thursday evening at the Bandshell in Memorial Park, Bracebridge https://www.bracebridge.ca/en/explore/bandshell-concert-series.aspx and the Music on the Barge concerts in Gull Lake every Sunday evenings in Gravenhurst https://www.gravenhurst.ca/en/explore-and-play/music-on-the-barge.aspx. The Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes, YOUR CLUB, needs your help. We are looking for new folks to sit on the Management Team. All positions are open, but we especially need a Vice President. As President Bev said in her note above it is not a hard job and the rest of team is there to help you along the way. The new executive begins Oct 1st so please think about coming on board and helping your club have another successful year.

Club Activities and Events

10th Anniversary Celebration The club had a great celebration June 18th for our 10th Anniversary. The General Meeting took place at the Sportsplex followed by lunch and a joyful performance by the Northern Lights Steel Orchestra. More than 100 members and guests attended. We were joined by our Area Director, Bob MacNair and his wife Diane from Collingwood. Bob spoke on ‘Probus: Past, Present and Future.’ We all left knowing much more about Probus! John & Joanne Baird came from Midland to help us celebrate. John, who was President of PCML for our fifth anniversary, spoke of the joys of being President of a Probus Club. Other past Presidents who attended were Dennis Lawson, (our first President), Catherine Caron, George Robbins, Kate Ruttan, Ian Livsey and Anne Noonan. Our organizing committee worked on the celebration for almost a year. Mary Tupper, Ian Livsey, Lynette Steep, Mary Mitchell, Jan Richard, Peter Richard and Anne Noonan made up the Committee. When Lynette and Anne ended up being away before the party, Mary and Ian stepped up and led the planning. Bev Webb provided supervision of ticket sales and attendance. Mary Mitchell and Jan and Peter Ricard were invaluable in the set up and serving. Lloyd Dunham, our Vice President, was a smooth leader of the meeting. Geoff Ross managed the A-V setback in this new setting. It was a typical PCML example of teamwork! We received a lovely note from Bob MacNair in which he said ‘If I were asked to give an example of how to be a successful Probus Club, I would say, "check out, The Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes”. Bob is a very perceptive man!

”And the crowd went wild!”

A note from Bob MacNair – Director District #7

Good day, Lloyd, Anne, Bev, and all Members of the Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes,

Thank you for inviting my wife, Diane, and me to your Probus Club’s "10th Anniversary Celebration”. Also, thank you for allowing me to address your membership on this very special occasion.

Diane and I had a wonderful day participating in your celebration. We felt very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you for the luncheon and the entertainment with the Steel Band was truly exceptional. I do not remember watching a group of musicians who appeared to “share their music” with such joy and enthusiasm. I even got their business card and we may consider asking them to join one of our Probus Celebrations in Collingwood sometime next year. Your Honorarium was totally unexpected. I will put it in to an account that is used to help pay for my Probus expenses. Congratulations on the success of your Club! You certainly offer your membership a large number of social activities and opportunities. If I were asked to give an example of how to be a successful Probus Club, I would say, "check out, The Probus Club of Muskoka Lakes”. Best wishes for the continued success of your Club. Sincerely, Bob MacNair, Director-Ontario District 7

Cycling On Friday, June 7, 17 cyclists gathered at the Sportsplex to begin their ride of the Falkenburg loop.

Flatlanders pedaled 26 km while the Pedal Pushers challenged themselves to 40 km including some

challenging hills! We’re becoming masters at changing gears without losing our bike chains!

On Friday July 5th nine Pedal Pushers pushed off at 9:00 am from the Sportsplex to cycle the 32.5 km

Beatrice Townline loop. Swooping down the hills to create a breeze to offset the 30C+ outside

temperature almost compensated for the up-hills! Skill levels of the riders have improved tremendously!

Obviously the skill level of the Flatlanders has also improved. They did the High Falls loop! It has three

VERY significant hills. Six Flatlanders accomplished the ride.

“So Dave. . . . do you have any extra water?”

Below are a few photos from the Probus cycling trip led by Donna Reid on the P'tit Train du Nord. Trail. It

was a 200 km rail trail from Mont Laurier to St. Jerome, Quebec that we cycled over four days. Twenty-

two cyclists participated. We stayed at inns in different villages along the trail every evening. We lucked

out on weather avoiding rain on two of the days because it stopped just as we were heading out to

cycle! The cycle gods were smiling upon us!

On a beautiful spring day (finally), six hikers walked the 7 km loops of the Torrance Barrens conservation

NO BUGS to speak of made a delightful morning walk.

“Anyone for a dip?”

Paddling Group Kirbys Beach Safety/Rescue session Monday July 8th Most members were able to do it; get ourselves back into the righted kayak (previously overturned) from the water, using our paddle amended with a puffy piece of some flotation, and perhaps somebody helping to stabilize the boat. Liz Hawke, a keen kayaking enthusiast with a Level 3 Kayaking skills certificate, was our wonderful instructor. The water at Kirbys Beach was warm and sunny skies provided just the right backdrop. Liz also went over a few significant safety aspects that would precede an open water excursion/camping endeavor. Namely the right gear/boat and essentials such as PFD, flashlight, whistle, but numerous other items too. Those of us who paddle often together on Mondays, initially got going a few years ago now, accompanying the late Sandy Schofield who took it upon himself to boot us out on the water be it in a canoe, or kayak. Being on the water in 3 of the 4 seasons adds a great dimension to one's recreational pursuits. Viki Govan
